Round 3 - Neapolitan Festival vs. City Scape Festival
Well it's onto Round 3 finally. Obviously, there is a new addition to this round, that being SET TIMES! Yes, all final 8 festivals have submitted their set times, which are to be viewed, judged, and criticized by you (the fan, voter). So instead of just basing your vote on the lineup, take some time to go over set times, because maybe there will be some conflicts which limit how many of your favorite bands you'll get to see compared to another festival...you get the drift. Also take some time to explore some of the smaller bands too...they could make or break a festival.
Remember, no alias voting (I know who you are, and/or suspect certain names)...and only vote if you have 100 or more posts...if you do otherwise, you're wasting your time because your vote will not be counted. Enjoy. Winners move onto semi-finals!

This is going to be a difficult fucking vote since I've liked both festivals from the start... X.x
Neopolitan Festival:
- The name "The Chocolate Factory" makes me giggle every time I read it... (*Imagine... TONIGHT, IN THE FUDGE FACTORY!-... Er...*)
- The way the graphic for the Flaming Lips looks like it's saying "The F-ing Lips" XD
(Friday)
- Start the day off with the most original act of ANY festival so far, the Kaiju Big Battel (seriously, it's guys in suits wrestling! It's bound to be entertaining, especially if Doctor Cube MCs...)
- Probably go get something to eat or see the Go! Team...
- Primus v.s. Violent Femmes... fucking christ... That's HARD... Why the hell are BOTH of those acts playing that early anyway!?!!? I'd probably split the set (Primus first, then VF)...
- After VF, run over to catch most of Gogol Bordello, and after that... wander around or catch Ween... Dunno really.
- Watch the end of Cibo Matto to get a good spot for Beck.
- Beck to Pixies to Flaming Lips makes me a very very happy boy (almost happy enough to look at Primus v.s. VF with hindsight)
(Saturday)
- Wow... talk about seamless transition:
* Cold War Kids ->
* The Raconteurs ->
* Iggy and the Stooges ->
* Sonic Youth ->
* Muse ->
* Mogwai
That's fucking awesome...
- Not sure what to do between 8 and 8:45... maybe split Mogwai's set with Underworld?
- Why does EVERYONE schedule TVotR before the Arcade Fire!? God...
- Radiohead v.s. Death Cab... Christ... You can't have it all eh?... I just wonder if it'd be worth witnessing a Radiohead show that wasn't at least 2 hours in length... I'd probably flip a coin here...
- The Arcade Fire to end the night is awesome, although I wonder what kind of god-awful madhouse it would be trying to get out of Radiohead to see them... X.x;;;;;
(Sunday)
- Nouvelle Vague to the Stills to Tricky sounds like a good way to start off Sunday
- The lineup isn't very bottom heavy (contrary to Friday what with Primus and VF and what not) for this day
- Probably catch the first hour, hour and fifteen minutes of Echo and the Bunnymen, then wander over to see most of Garbage's set, before wandering back (or, depending on the crowd, just staying at Echo) for Interpol
- I'd like to see Dresden Dolls too, but much like Garbage, I may have to miss them to get a good spot for NIN... Still, staying in the back for NIN may not be such a bad thing (again, depending on the sound and the crowd)...
- I'd probably end the night with the Knife since everyone keeps on raving about their music and live show.
Cityscape Festival:
(Friday)
- Go in around 1:45 to get a good spot for New Porn, then wander over to catch Pinback.
- No idea what to do between Pinback and Jimmy Eat World... Probably go watch the end of Self and discover them.
- Jimmy Eat World and Franz Ferdinand makes me very happy. =D
- Hell, even by the time Franz's full set ends, I'm positive Gorillaz wouldn't even be setup, so I'd go wait an extra 15 minutes or so for Gorillaz to come on stage and watch that performance.
(Saturday)
- The National to Fields to Minus the Bear is a great way to start the day, except I'd probably cut MtB early to go see Nada Surf in full.
- 3:40-5:30?... No clue... Probably catch most of Cursive and the end of Idlewild.
- Jurassic 5 time, baby, but I'd probably cut their set by 15 minutes...
- For the majority of the Cardigans set.
- Ending the night with The Faint and the Orbital reunion sounds like a fine way to dance the night away.
(Sunday)
- Maybe see +/-... If I feel up to it.
- Catch Old 97's for sure... Stay for Phoenix
- Le Tigre v.s. Broken Social Scene v.s. Mogwai is... groan worthy... I mean, I'd probably end up missing Mogwai so I could see the latter two... @____@
- I'd probably stay for Buena Vista Social club and end the night with the most anticipated band, in my eyes...
- R.E.M.
Summary:
Well damn... This wasn't as near a contest as I thought. Both festivals (again), paced far better than the 4 predecessors, except there are some issues with Gorillaz' alloted time slot for Cityscape. My problem with Cityscape is, well, there are (again) a significant amount of acts that I have no clue about, and (because of this) there just doesn't seem to be a distinguishable identity for the stages or the acts (not that Neapolitan does much better... Still, you can at least know you'd witness all the hip hop acts at the Chocolate Factory).
The fact of the matter is, for me, Neapolitan has the best lineup of all the festivals so far (in fact, it's akin to my festival in the respect that it has the Pixies headlining night 1), as well as some of the better niche random acts (Kaiju Big Battel) of any of the festivals. Plus, it's nigh impossible to beat that Saturday lineup (especially with Saturday, in my estimation, being Cityscape's weakest day) especially with it cheating to have Arcade Fire and Radiohead on the same day (even though I don't think that the Arcade Fire are a headliner worthy act in the first place).
Oh yes, I also despise the White Stripes. That probably helped a lot to put Neapolitan over...
EDIT:
Top 5 Neapolitan Acts:
- Pixies
- Flaming Lips
- Arcade Fire
- Muse
- A shit load of bands tied (NIN, Dresden Dolls, Sonic Youth, Garbage, Interpol)
Top 5 Cityscape Acts:
- R.E.M.
- Nada Surf
- Franz Ferdinand
- Jimmy Eat World
- Gorillaz

Most of your in depth review was good... but... these are two of the stupidest things ive ever read. Assuming that when u say "why do people schedule TVoTR before arcade fire", u mean that they are bigger/better than arcade fire. WHich is, of course, ridiculous. and then to flip a coin between DC, and radiohead??!!??
Blasphemy! Radiohead by a mile.

Clarifying my statement... I genuinely dislike TVotR, and as such, I would hate to have to sit through them (even the last 5 minutes of their set) for a band I love, the Arcade Fire.
And I'm a DCfC fan first, then Radiohead fan. I'm sorry if I'm not one of those Radiohead fan zombies that sees nothing wrong with the band... Ever... Kinda why I didn't include them on my poster. It's been done.

Kinda like Gorillaz over Devo (but that also has some mitigating factors).

Perhaps at this point in time Beck has more material than the Pixies?... I mean, other than that, I guess it's to allow the Pixies and the Flaming Lips enough time to both play decently long enough sets.

Pixies could rip through 25 songs in 75 minutes if given the chance. But still though, I dont want to be shortchanged with only 20 songs by them and Beck would do like 15.

Erik didnt look through everything with a fined tooth comb as he should have. But we cant blame him since he had so much stuff going on and things were overlooked, we(the voters) are pretty much seeing whats up andvoting one way or the other. To take the rule breaking/bending into account or not with our vote.
Bosco

well, I realized its kinda late to enforce some kind of penalty now, but, perhaps if the rule breaking festivals move on, we can highlight/inform all the voters before they vote for the matchup.

I hate to bring this up ... we're on the quarterfinals already why are we still debating this shit? ...
To be fair ... Bosco, you made Muertos, right? You also broke this rule:
There are set guidelines that your festival must follow, in order to be considered. Those are:
o The dates for the festival are July 6-8, 2007. That is a Friday-Sunday weekend, meaning the festival is three days long. These dates must be present on your poster.
Muertos has October 31, November 1 and November 2 in the poster and set times. And actually, we all know about the mistake in Alba, for some reason, at the bottom, it has June 6-8 dates.
I think it's up for the voters now whether we would give our votes to a rule breaker or not. Participants/posters still in the running ... just keep your mouth shut, I guess already. :D

ouch, your right, my foot is now in my mouth.
I could swear it said it didnt matter what the date of the festival was on, as long as the it was separated day 1, day 2, and day 3.
However, I stand corrected. I apologize for finger pointing, as I too am a breaker of the rules.
If I should move on, please let it be known that I have broke the rules.
Again, Im sorry.

Primus vs. Violent Femmes is a terrible conflict. Why? There has to be some way around that. Easy solution... switch Primus w/ Cibo Matto.
Neopolitan festival then is pretty much perfect.
Cityscape however, White Stripes vs Gorillaz? Ouch. Thank god Gorillaz are playing for 3 hours. Also, Broken Social Scene vs. Le Tigre? Common. I know its not THAT big of an overlap.
Anyways, my vote goes to Cityscape. I cannot get over that Primus Violent Femmes conflict. Also, give Primus more than an hour for Christs sake!

Too close to call. Both are great line-ups. I am giving the nod to Neapolitan because it's in Naples and also because seeing Ween and Flaming Lips back to back would be sweet.
Courtney
05-29-2007, 05:25 PM
Both are great. Neapolitan has a couple of upsetting conflicts for me (Sonic Youth/Sigur Ros; Justice/Radiohead/Arcade Fire), but overall I think that's a result of a more packed schedule because there are more bands that I'm interested in. Neapolitan gets my vote.
As for the rule-breaking stuff, because I didn't create a poster for the competition, I never read the rules. Perhaps if some of the semi-finalists have serious rule-breaking problems, that should be stated clearly and neutrally in the first post of the next voting set by Erik, so that everyone knows all of the factors to consider when making their choice.
