View Full Version : Is Weezer an emo band?

I got in a huge argument with a friend of mine. She insists Weezer is an emo band. I say no way, it is more indie sounding. What says the message board?

No they are not emo, was it even a term back when Blue came out? Not really. They are a big influence though when it comes to how to write "emo" songs. But Weezer is Power Pop/Rock more than anything.

They're more pop than emo. Always have been a "power pop" band as Supre stated.

Well, power pop ballads are the second emo. First there was emotional hardcore, then it was Weezer's Pinkerton and mall rock bands like Story of the Year and Jimmy Eat World that were "emo", and now emo is most used to describe shit like My Chemical Romance and Panic! At the Disco.

suprefan asked if "emo" had even been coined circa 1994 when Weezer's first album came out. Boourns was answering that yes, it was. The term dates to the mid-1980s with the emotional hardcore of Rites of Spring, et al.
Though, Boourns, if you were actually saying that all music began with Rites of Spring I'll retract. Let me know.

The "second emo" was rather broad and there was a good deal of power pop influence.
Within the context of the history of emo that phrases isn't that far off. It narrows the focus too much but we were talking about Weezer being an emo band. Or not.

Debating what genre of music a band is, especially when that band has 5+ albums under their belt, is one of the most jerk-off aspects of fandom.
That being said, my thought is that Weezer was definitely one of the main inspirations of emo, but they were most similar to it before it really existed as a genre. Kinda like how Pixies can be given a tremendous amount of the credit for inspiring and leading the way of the "Alternative Rock" movement even though they were already over when bands like Nirvana (who have admitted to intentionally biting a lot of their sound from Pixies' example) got successful.
Thus for the vast majority, Nevermind was the first set of characteristics by which the new genre became defined. So what was the first emo album?

emo-related bands (and kids)...
1. have incomplete sentences for band names.
2. have shitty songs that sound way too similar.
3. shout in recordings in hopes of getting point across.
4. look and smell like they smoke cigarette butts.
5. shop at threadless.com.
6. use matte hair products.
7. can't fill in the ass portion of their sisters jeans.
8. are famous because of myspace.
9. try and classify anything and everything as emo.
10. really have no idea what emo really is.

Yes. Rites of Spring were/grew out of hardcore punk and were called "emotional hardcore" which was shortened to "emocore" and "emo."
"Emo kids" and what it is now has little to do with the origins.
Simplifying a whole lot:
Minor Threat + Husker Du = Rites of Spring = original emo
Various bands moved from here but the next new type of emo was the more indie/power pop version of the mid 90s with Sunny Day Real Estate and Braid and, yes, Weezer. Much of this had little to do with hardcore (though there was still some of that with bands like Texas is the Reason.) And this continued and branched off with Cursive and Jimmy Eat World and the Get Up Kids and the Promise Ring and yeah.
I kinda lose any interest once we get to the third wave which is the Dashboard Confessional, etc branch. This is far more broad and really this is what people complain about. It is around here (circa 5 years ago) that people started calling everything emo from Bright Eyes to Modest Mouse to My Chemical Romance to Panic! At the Disco to whatever.

Weezer was emo when emo was what it was in the 90's.

I almost agree with this. I'd say Pinkerton was emo when emo was what it was in the 90s.
Blue and the 3 most recent albums are much more power-pop and nothing like "90s emo" or whatever you want to call it.
It's amazing the transformation of the term emo from something new, interesting, and meaningful, as it was when Pinkerton came out....to mindless angry teenager drivel that's considered emo today.
