Maybe Pete just liked my response after he said Morrissey sucks. He doesnt want to go on my ignore list. ANYWAY, back on topic. I am on my break so I thought I would check in. While Pete goes through his last days of high school I'll post these questions.
What dont you "get"?
What songs do you like from them?
What songs dont you like?
How long have you been listening to them?
Have you ever seen them live?
Do you feel their fanbase or anyone else is just kissing their asses for no good reason?
Is their music just too ''progressive'' and ''out there'' that your brain cant comprehend, thus the rejection?
Does Thoms eye scare you?
Which albums have you listened to?
What just made you think they suck?
Who is ''worthy'' of being your ''Radiohead''?(dont say arcade fire)
Do you like Coldplay more cause Chris Martin has a hot wife?
Did you ever consider suicide and Radiohead pushed you to do so because they ''suck'' so much?
If you could make a suggestion to the band regarding their next album and what music is going to end up on it, what would you say?
The gauntlet has been set, lets see what you got.

"Drool" was an understatement for me. My first time seeing Radiohead after being a long time fan. Same with the Pixies.
In Pete's defense, I CAN understand why some people don't like Radiohead, although I think they are flat out amazing. They are not very accesible at times, whether it be musically, lyrically, or subject matter. Those are some of the reasons that I do like them, but to each their own. What I also think makes them a great band is how well they pull off the songs live, and the energy they bring. I would invite anyone who does not like them, solely based on recorded work, see them live, and THEN pass judgement.

If you're not moved by Karma Police, you have no soul.
Same goes for A Day In The Life, for whoever said they don't like The Beatles. And I haven't heard the "I'm rich but sad" complaint about Nirvana in a long time, still don't really understand it. They weren't always rich. You think a suicidally depressed heroin addict is going to perk up just because he got rich? Ever noticed that rich people aren't particularly happier than other people?

A green plastic watering can
For a fake chinese rubber plant
In the fake plastic earth
That she bought from a rubber man
In a town full of rubber plans
To get rid of itself
It wears her out, it wears her out
It wears her out, it wears her out
She lives with a broken man
A cracked polystyrene man
Who just crumbles and burns
He used to do surgery
On girls in the eighties
But gravity always wins
And it wears him out, it wears him out
It wears him out, it wears him out
She looks like the real thing
She tastes like the real thing
My fake plastic love
But I can't help the feeling
I could blow through the ceiling
If I just turn and run
And it wears me out, it wears me out
It wears me out, it wears me out
And if I could be who you wanted
If I could be who you wanted
All the time, all the time
This song made me love Radiohead even though i was only 7. Other all time favorite band Nirvana, i was influenced by my older cousin.

Radiohead is still one of my favorite bands.
They are one of the few bands who have always pushed the boundaries of "mainstream" music and have never rested on their laurels by putting out the same crap every release (Hail to the Thief excepted, but that's another argument...) instead challenging their fanbase by changing their sound and putting out records that take time to appreciate. You could pick 2-3 records of theirs and not only argue that they belong in the top 10 record pantheon but never fail to send shivers down my spine...
Now, having said that, I am starting to feel that their creative output has run the course. I didn't feel the same power and emotion with Hail to the Thief that I had with all earlier records. Their last tour left much to be desired though I think they basically wanted to test out the new batch of songs on their core fanbase so they in turn booked smaller more initimate venues (which I thought would be great, but the energy didn't translate).
I will be one of the first in line to check out the new record when it comes out and I will always go see them, but I do think that we will be witnessing the remaining years of this band on the downward slope after such a glorious and beautiful uphill climb...

Much to vinylmartyr's chagrin, though I'm certain he has more pressing matters to attend to, I can't resist posting a little (or a lot) about my favorite band.
It took me two years to decide that I didn't hate Hail to the Thief as much as I thought I did. The fact remains that I still only really enjoy two or three songs on it.
As far as their new material goes it has a much greater impact on me than HTTT, especially Videotape, since I have the haunting little number Thom did for Nigel's web-television show. Others I have a great antipathy for (as I have for Karma Police and Creep) and need to be nixed or changed fundamentally in my mind. I don't know what I'll do if 4-Minute Warning appears on the album. Talk about downward spiral...
But if Piney doesn't like it he doesn't need my help. I hated Radiohead for ten years.

The gauntlet has been set, lets see what you got.
i don't not "get" anything. i totally understand where they're coming from and what they're saying.
i have never gotten around to acquiring a Radiohead album
i have never seen them live
i dont KNOW whether or not "their fanbase or anyone else is just kissing their asses for no good reason" thats why i asked the question dumbshit
their "progressive" music is just plain pretentious to me, its not that i dont understand it
as i explained i have no reason to think they suck, i have barely ever herd a song from them. i only said that to get a response from radiohead fans in defense of Radiohead
i haven't chosen a "radiohead" yet...i dont think any music is worth obsessing and pouring over
there happy now?
as it has become apparent i know close to nothing about radiohead, i only wanted to know why people think they're so great

Alright, well, that's kinda fucking annoying then. Why were you asking us to take time out of our day to defend a band that you don't even dislike yet? As if the collective board's detailed opinions on why they like Radiohead (generally a silly question--you like music that sounds good to you) would have any impact on whether or not you'd like them to.
Download a fucking album or two, you lazy whore. OK Computer and Kid A, specifically.

Somewhat, the answers quoted above have some contradictions. How do you know what they are saying and coming from if you dont have an album or barely heard a song from them? How is the music pretentious if you havent listened to their pretentious records? I'll let the live thing slide of course since you are a little baby, but still. There is plenty of music worth obsessiong over, you just dont want to take the chance of backing the wrong horse. Loyalty is a strong thing and this band has it with their fans. They will stand by their words because they believe in the music and what it does to them and how its affected lots of other things. Before you even started to ask us our thoughts you shouldve done your homework. Go download The Bends, OK Computer and Kid A, listen until you get tired of it and come back to us. I'll even give you links to download if that helps.
Now I will give you my answer. Being a long time fan(15 years and counting) theres been lots of history in my life with this band. I have been trying to make up for lost time on seeing them live but I think thats my only fault with them. Its moving music, you listen to it over and over and sometimes you hear something you didnt before. You get a visual of whats being said and conveyed in the lyrics. Thom writes some good words if you ever took the time to read them. They are not where they are within the music scene because they just played to the masses and did their bidding. I could care less now if they ever played Creep again, because I have seen it performed and thats that, lets move on ya know? They have been 10 steps ahead of the game for a while. When they put an album out, everyone listens because its a big deal. People wonder what they will do next, will they go all electronic? Maybe some more jazz? Will they return to the guitar work that propelled them into the limelight? Hail To The Thief was pretty good I think, but for me that album was made to be played live. They had finally gotten over all the s**t that happend post Ok Computer and what made Kid A and Amnesiac good albums. They got "happy" and you could see it a bit. I loved the last tour, because being able to be the guinea pigs for what would be the next album is just awesome. It was the longest week of my life. I laughed, I cried, I lost immense sleep. I had to readjust to "normal" life after all of it ended. I couldnt even believe it went by so fast, yet time stood still. In any blog I wrote about that whole week I never spoke of the show and the music, because in my eyes I couldnt find words to express what went through my mind, my heart, my body for those 2 hours they were on stage every night. When you find pieces of music that can do that to you, you hold on and cherish it because you know there wont be something like that created ever again. Hope that helps, now get to downloading.

Dave,
This is the most detailed and honest review of Radiohead as a whole that I have witnessed in recent memory, however, this statement does make me beg to differ on running their course. Have you heard any of the new stuff, particularly "Videotape" ?, what do you make of the new material? Has the same feeling that you got from previous albums/tracks resonated at all? I am not trying to be a typical asshole Radiohead fan, I am just asking out of curiosity due in part to the fact that your opinions are logical.

Yeah... I fall into that category of folks who like the Strokes more than either the Beatles or Radiohead.
I think the latter (especially with Bob Dylan) is because I listened to a LOT of oldies music in my youth (trivia: before it became an independent alt. rock station, 94.9 was the oldies station) and I grew out of it.
There are just a few artists with this ridiculous mainstream reverence that's VERY push-offish for me, at least, and it's especially true in regards to Radiohead where virtually every fan I've ever encountered has never had anything to complain about the band, or if questioned have the same reply; "well, I never really liked Pablo Honey at first..."
Yeah, you might think it's a silly reason to not like the group, but that kind of atmosphere is pretty intimidating. That coupled with the fact that I think Radiohead isn't the greatest tends to put me in the camp of "people who dislike Radiohead" because, in my experience, it's impossible to find a middle ground with Radiohead fans... =/
On a side note, I do love this remix I found of Thom Yorke's "Analyze" mixed in with Jeff Buckley's "You and I"... It's pretty boss.

No worries, it's a remix. When I was looking for some music for my myspace, I came across this site with some remixes, and one of them was a remix of Thom Yorke's "Analyze" where the person tracked over Jeff Buckley's "You and I" and it's really good.

I honestly refuse to listen to any of the leaked new stuff. I think it's possible that the leaked version of Hail to the Thief on some level ruined the actual release for me. As for hearing the new material live on their last tour, a couple songs felt strong but most of it still sounded half finished and still in progress. I will wait until the official release and then give it some time to sink in.

People who say they cannot appreciate The Beatles have not listened to them, or have flat out lied about it.
eh. I think it's well established that I love the Beatles, but I can defend those who have chosen not to get into them.
Beatles music is everywhere. It's on the radio, it's in stores, it's in ads, it's part of the cultural wallpaper. and since it is so pervasive it is very easy for people to just hear it as mere background, and not really take it seriously. especially when much of what you hear is Paul's lighterweight stuff.
I think it takes real effort to punch through that 'background' perception and hear the Beatles' music afresh, to hear Sgt Pepper as it would have been heard 40 years ago, for example. It takes forced, focused listening; otherwise it's too easy to just tune it out since it's already so familiar. That's why I suggested to Amy that she listen to the White Album. Of all the Beatles' music that album is probably the least present in the noise of popular culture and so may be easiest to hear outside of that context. Also it's really good.
