U.S. government fights to keep meatpackers from testing all slaughtered cattle for mad cow
The Associated Press
Published: May 29, 2007

WASHINGTON: The Bush administration said Tuesday it will fight to keep meatpackers from testing all their animals for mad cow disease.

The Agriculture Department tests fewer than 1 percent of slaughtered cows for the disease, which can be fatal to humans who eat tainted beef. A beef producer in the western state of Kansas, Creekstone Farms Premium Beef, wants to test all of its cows.

Larger meat companies feared that move because, if Creekstone should test its meat and advertised it as safe, they might have to perform the expensive tests on their larger herds as well.

The Agriculture Department regulates the test and argued that widespread testing could lead to a false positive that would harm the meat industry.

A federal judge ruled in March that such tests must be allowed. U.S. District Judge James Robertson noted that Creekstone sought to use the same test the government relies on and said the government didn't have the authority to restrict it. - A federal judge ruled in March that such tests must be allowed. The ruling was scheduled to take effect June 1, but the Agriculture Department said Tuesday it would appeal, effectively delaying the testing until the court challenge has played out.

Mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, is linked to more than 150 human deaths worldwide, mostly in Britain.

Three cases of mad cow disease have been found in the United States. The first, in December 2003 in Washington state, was in a cow that had been imported from Canada. The second, in 2005, was in a cow born in Texas. The third was confirmed last year in an Alabama cow.

He must have ownership in the meat industry. Doesn't want mad cows ruining his profits.

This isn't necessarily a "bush administration" issue. Al Gore's Agriculture Department would have done the same shit.

While I don't agree with the government interfering with the right of any company to conduct 100% testing, Anyone with even a basic understanding of statistics knows why the agriculture dept (anyone's agriculture dept) has a problem with it. False Positives will be a huge problem when dealing with an event probability this small. We're talking three confirmed positives in US history (ZERO deaths). Test the fucking imported feed. That's probably way more effective, and doesn't stir millions of retarded citizens crazy unnecessarily. If you have to raise the sample rate above 1% that's fine, but 100% is ridiculous and false positives will go through the roof probably resulting in huge damage to the industry. Rejoice if you're a nazi vegan, but its your economy too. We're not talking cigarettes or oil.

It's probably not the biggest deail. I say let the company do 100% testing on slaughters, but watch them like a fucking hawk because I don't believe for one second that they're going to be truthful without policing. There is zero point in 100% testing for an event than even with a sub 1% sample rate has resulted in 3 fucking positives in this country EVER. You're a moron if you pay an siginificantly more money for "100% tested" beef. Fucking rich people.

When you hate Bush for bullshit reasons you steal credence from the real reasons to hate Bush. Anyone who cites this as a reason to hate bush needs to be punched in the dick.

I agree Jack, 100% testing is a ridiculous standard.

But if that one company in Kansas wants to waste their money that way I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to.

I should have specified zero human deaths. No american human has ever died of mad cow from american beef.

oh I agree they should let them waste their money (as long as they're not lying and just making the claim). I'm just saying it's understandable why the goverment would be pissed (on behalf of the beef farmer and the country's economy) and that it's not a "bush" issue.

I said I am NOT in favor of restricting the company's right, only that it's understandable why the government is pissed, and why it's not a good idea.

But yes, I hate free markets, and Chavez is one of my "five".

I like how you made fake MySpace profiles for him and then filled up your top 8. That was so edgy.
