Tower Records founder Russ Solomon is trying to bring back a Tower Records clone, with R5 Records scheduled to poen this month in Sacramento. I think Tower Records may be back soon, and that is good news. You can read about this at http://www.sacbee.com/101/story/213184.html and the official website is http://www.r5records.com where the R5 logo is similar to the old Tower Records logo. Are you folks excited? Also, a separate company owns the rights to http://www.tower.com

Part 5 will answer if I get my tapes back. As for R5 Records, I believe Russ Solomon plans to keep his prices on the competitive side, not on the higher end of the market.

IF anyone is in the Sacramento area, please give us a report of if R5 Records is good and how similar its layout is to Tower Records.

uh, is there really any difference in how record stores are laid out?

Yes. My favourite layout is the glasshouse. Alphabetical order. No genres.

And a Coachella corner.

I hardly ever go to record stores to shop for CDs anymore. Most of the time they don't have the stuff I want and when they do, its pretty overpriced. The few exceptions are Amoeba's, Rasputin's and a few local independent stores. And often times I just browse the vinyl section.

Unfortunately, that won't happen. Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, etc all use CD's as "loss leaders" to get people into the stores. That's why it is so much cheaper. Places like Tower couldn't compete with that.

I hope they do figure out a good business model. Relying on straight CD sales is not the way to go.

The model has died (several times in my lifetime).
