Hey,
I'm going to see the decemberists this weekend, and wanted some advice from the local LA people on some quirky places to eat. We've enjoyed Pink's, Apple Pan, and Phillipes in the past, and are looking for something new.
Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

The Hot Dog lady AFTER the show. She should be in full force on the walk down Highland. But srsly, her and Cafe 101, its not that far from there. Its on Franklin, before Gower. The brownie waffle sundae is amazing.

Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles. Not the swank Hollywood one either. Pico and La Brea.

I've never been to the Hollywood one, but Pico & La Brea? That location ALWAYS overcooks the chicken. Still good, but not great

More like years, it got turned into a Pomodoro if I am correct. If not its some weird asian cuisine place.

Do normal people actually go to those spago type restaurants?

More like the " I can afford it, so why not eat there" people. I mean, I have eaten there, its pretty good, but I would say your best bet is going to something that isnt so uber elite. The place only holds 97 people.

Rock n Roll Dennys is the one that was next to Guitar Center, chances are you are thinking of the one in front of the Palladium?

yes, gower gulch has always been rock n roll denny's

From my knowledge it was always the one next to Guitar Center. Me and my friends were bummed when it was closed down. Weird........
On that note, you know what place I miss? Ed Debevics. It was decent diner food, but it was always fun. The dancing on the tables and snobby servers, good times were had there. Oh and Lime Coke, also the worlds smallest hot fudge sundae.

Hmm..doesn't sound like there is a 'you've got to go here' place then, huh? I know roscoes, but that's way too southern fattening..my girlfriend wont do it. If you think of some cool place let me know. :)
Phillipes was that kind of place when we first went..lines out the wazoo for the most amazing french dip sandwich. I wish they had a Chee Burger Cheeburger there...Anyone know that place? It's mostly back east..but they have the best burgers...even better than in and out.

Theres a revolving argument with places being better than in-n-out across the country. How about Whatta Burger in Texas? I heard theres are killer too, see? I'm telling you, go to Cafe 101 or Fred 62.

Has anyone eaten at Sonic? I have always wanted to try it. Their slushies look good. There aren't any in the Bay Area though, at least to my knowledge.

Slushes are great, the food is mediocre (at least what I have tried). Add the sour mix to your slushes. Now that is awesomeness worthy of the Awesome Thread.

Cafe 101 is really good. The Chai tea milkshake is fantastic, and the Mac and Cheese is awesome. I liked Toi Thai, for what it's worth. It's very hip inside, like they're trying to make it that way. Also, if you're going beforehand, Paru's Indian restaurant on Sunset is great. It's South Indian vegetarian food, and they are awesome. The atmosphere there is really cool also. Cactus Tacos on Vine, just south of Santa Monica is a good taco hut.

i like grace but that's kind of expensive. also kind of trendy.
delicious cocktails though! if you go, try the aromatherapy. it's like a gin and tonic with elderberry syrup.

cafe des artistes is a rad little restaurant i found recently, great food! it's right between hollywood blvd. and sunset down a sidestreet near the hollywood and highland complex, barely even a sign out front to alert you to its presence. ate there a couple weeks ago and eric mccormack(sp?) from "will and grace" was at the table next to us. you can google it to find the addy and the menu.

Well, I could recommend some real good shit out a little north on the 101 into the valley like Sherman Oaks and Studio City, but if you are really looking to stick with just Hollywood I would recommend the following...
Mexican Food - Velvet Margarita on Cahuenga, have one of their fetus sized burrito's and one of their cadillac margaritas (maybe a few) and then after dinner walk about two doors down and you will find Beauty Bar, cool little hipster bar with good music. This is actually what you might want to do before and after the Bowl show since it is a very short taxi and/or a little bit of a walk from the Bowl.
If you have a little bit more time on your hands and you want to branch out a little bit to a much more worthwhile city then Hollywood when it comes to food, try Santa Monica...
Father's Office on Montana has the excellent Office Burger and sweet potato fries and just about any form of beer you can possibly think of...heaven.
Bravo Pizzeria on Main St. is one of the best places to "grab a slice" or two after a night of drinking.
Finn McCool's on Main St. has an authentic Irish menu and a cool Irish pub atmosphere.
Urth Cafe on Main St. (also on Melrose in West Hollywood) has some damn good coffee and tea along with organic food and desserts that will blow your mind.

It's all about Bossa Nova. They have em all over the place. Get the caperenas or however they're spelled. And the plantains are awesome.
My friend Alex made me drive down to Anaheim to get Sonic one time but my tire blew out on the 405 and we almost died as I swerved from the fast lane all the way across to the shoulder so we haven't gone back yet. But he swears by it. (He's from Texas/New York).
Dani, Gower Gulch is pretty much ghetto Dennys now. Altho it being right next to Amagi has been nice. I seriously am scared to go in there sometimes tho.

OOOoooh Thom those are good choices. Velvet Margarita has the best quesadilla I have ever had in my life (Dani can vouch). Didn't try their margaritas tho cause they're like $30.
I still need to go to Father's Office sometime. It's so unassuming on Montana of all places.
Also if you're into desserts I recommend Susina Bakery on Beverly and La Brea. They have an amazing white chocolate strawberry cake. MMmmmm I might have to buy one for 4th of July. I haven't had it in over a year now. Sooooo good. I actually love that place. I used to work at the ebay store right next to it, and after work I would meet my classmate there and we would study for exams while drinking coffee and getting a pastry or something. They have really good sandwiches too. Pear and gouda or something weird like that. Highly recommend Susina Bakery. It's a tad pricey but it's great atmosphere at night.

It's on Montana? Awesome!!! It can't be too far from my apartment. I've been meaning to go there for awhile now. I hear they have an amazing beer selection, so that'll have to happen soon.

No idea, but that sounds great. Was it a CD or record jukebox? The CD jukebox at Swinger's has an awesome selection.
