If anyone saw them on their previous tour, does anyone remember what they played? I know they opened with "Incinerate" (which has to be one of the greatest SY songs EVER).
I'm hoping for "Teenage Riot" and "Sweet Shine".

They closed most of the sets with Shaking Hell from Confusion is Sex. It sounds awesome. And they were playing largely stuff from Rather Ripped.

is difficult to choose songs with a band with 20 years in the bussines... but youth against fascism, mote, dirty boots or diamond sea (impossible) would be appreciated. thank you very much. goodbye.

They played Teenage Riot on my stop of the Rather Ripped tour, it was SO amazing, my god 20 years later and that song is still so invigorating when they play it.

my sonic youth dream list would simply be "DAYDREAM NATION" in its entirety. No more, no less.

any suggestions for someone just getting into sonic youth (yeah I know it's about time)
which album is the best to start with?

I bought "Daydream Nation" first. To me that's a very good representation of what Sonic Youth is known for. "Experimental Jet Set" is good as well. Stay away from "Dirty" and "Goo" until later. "Goo" was good for a commercial album, but it wont be what you're expecting. Oh, and "Washing Machine" is one of their better albums as well. I'm not an avid Sonic Youth fan, but I have most of their stuff.

"Daydream Nation" is considered to be their crowning acheivement. GOO & Dirty are phenomenal albums also that were put out at the pinnacle of their carreer. There is a long running debate about which album broke them into the mainstream "GOO" or "Dirty". You can't go wrong with these 3 albums. Stuff before Daydream is more experimental but they do have hits from those albums. Washing Machine was realeased the year they headlined Lollapalooza & has choice cuts like "Skip Tracer" & " The Diamond Sea". Sonic Youth is by far my all time favorite band & I've seen them more times than I can count. They have a back catalog, solo releases & side projects that are semmingly endless. My advice in listening to an album from them you've never heard is too give it a chance. Don't just listen to it 2 or 3 times & pass a judgement. There material grows on you the more you listen to it & eventually you find yourself singing along.

I heard they had all of their equipment stolen years ago & they can't play certain songs as a result of thier one of a kind modified guitars being gone forever. I shop the pawn shops dreaming of finding one. They'd probably honor me as a member of the band or something if I could find one. This band has endured so much and has been the scene when the scene was totally dead. Why their not headling is dumbfounding.

You may get yr wish for 100% they were playing it during last summer's tour. They rocked it at Bonnaroo. It was a little rusty but they were having fun with it. They also had Mark Ibold of Pavement standing in on bass & did Expressway to Yr Skull with Malkumus it was so great. I thought it was 1991 again!

I saw them twice on the last tour and they didn't play it. Different sets i suppose. O, and they got those guitars back, which is why they're able to play Shaking Hell and stuff from Evol, Sister and the like.

Out of the 3 times I have seen them on this tour, I've seen them play:
everything from Rather Ripped, Teenage Riot, Schizphrenia, 100%, Eric's Trip, Candle, Catholic Block, Sunday, Shaking Hell, World Looks Red, Pattern Recognition and maybe a couple others that I am forgetting.

Don't count on it...the last time they played that song was in 1991 when they toured for Goo.

But they're always resurrecting old songs. Before they started closing every show out with Shaking Hell on this tour, they hadn't played it since 1986...so there's alwasy a little hope for your favorite oldie.

I never connected completely with Sonic Youth, friends of mine were obsessed with their records, it was a little too distorted for me to get into, but the songs that I've heard from Rather Ripped, I've liked alot and I'm really supportive of Kim and Thurston because they came here and played a show at a TINY (like maybe 100 legal capacity) dive bar and with their reputation and legacy, I thought that was a super classy move. Just to show how roots committed they are.

couple days into them and have to say that yeah the more you listen to them the more they grow on you. i've always been into distorted noise rock but never quite this distorted so it took awhile. really into dirty at the moment with a little of daydream nation and rather rippeed.

Yeah each album definately grows on you with each listen. You can't call yrself a fan and only like "Dirty" or "Goo" Just keep listening with an open mind & their infectious riffs sink in. They have complete freedom & control of artistic expression which allows them to go where they didn't on the last. This band is a constant masterpiece in progress. The Youth are the final torch bearers of the Beatnik Generation. They've damn near been on tour longer than the Dead & are acheiving a tour following like them but not as big of course.
LONG LIVE THE YOUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
p.s. yr cool if you added to this post!

Sonic Youth is one of my favorite bands. I saw them for a third time at Lollapalooza last summer. The set list included lots of songs off Rather Ripped. My only concern is that hopefully the poster is not an indication of what time they play. They deserve a spot on the main stage before Bjork.

I agree. I think Sonic Youth should be on mainstage. I just pray to god they are not playing at the same time as Silversun Pickups. Its seems to me that most people who are fans of Siversun are going to be big Sonic Youth fans.
I am totally in love with Sonic Youth's new album; but I would definantly love to hear Teenage Riot, Candle, Dirty Boots (!), Titanium Expose, Cinderella's Big Score, the Diamond Sea, any of the first 3 songs off of Murray Street, Starpower, Sugar Cane, etc.. As much as I love their new album, I hope they treat the audience to an equal amount of 'greatest hits' type songs. Especially since its a festival inwhich not everyone is going to be as familiar with their music. I took my g/f to see them (and Pearl jam) and she absolutely hated SY. I think that she would have enjoyed them more had they not played all but one song off of their new album, which may be a little too mellow for an introduction to the band for non-fans.
But I'll be psyched no matter what they play!

Is it just me, or does Silversun Pickups "Lazy Eye" video bear a striking resemblance to Sonic Youth's "Dirty Boots" video? (Cute indie-rock girl flirts with vaguely dorky guy while band plays in small club?)

I hadn't made that connection yet, but yes, you are absolutely right. Dirty Boots is probably my favorite SY song. The video is a good time capsule of a long ago fun era in both music and goofy grunge fashions (which I was a part of in my own hometown club scene back then).

i thought i had read somewhere that it was a direct homage. i could be wrong though.
also if not "tunic (song for karen)", how about their legendary cover of "superstar"? that would work too.

that was in 1997 or 1998, i think. it happened the night before they were supposed to play "this aint no picnic". superchunk let them borrow their stuff for the show. and just last year somebody ended up returning all of their equipment according to a story in pitchfork.
never heard about not being able to play certain songs due to "one of a kind modification".

I can't believe i'm going to see sonic youth. hopefully it will be something like this.
"well I知 going to come out and I知 immediately gonna like puke on stage and then douse the puke with lighter fluid and light it and then kick it into the audience and this entire field of a hundred thousand people is going to go up in flames and then I知 going to get a shotgun and just just do it do it baby because I知 just going to keep on I知 just going to keep on keeping on and on and on just to the extreme to the extreme because I don稚 call myself the only living white hope the great era of the colors in the sky because my eye is full of beeswax yeah peace baby"

Chunk, the guitars that were stolen had really interesting mods, like weird pickups and tuning problems that they used to their advantage. They were mostly pawn shop guitars that they collected for their strange sonic qualities.

not that year. next year w/ modest mouse curating it rained. when lou reed headlined.
the thing i remember most about the year you listed is how mad i was in not being able to get in for some of the bands playing inside the queen mary (especially deerhoof) and the way magic band went jesus all over everybody. matt groening curated it. i was so mad i wanted to personally tell him, "worst festival ever!"

Yeah, that two-stage ATP setup in '03 blew, not only because the ship kept filling up but also because you had to wait in line and go back through security every time you went back to main stage. And there was only 1 food stand (literally) for the entire outdoor area, so I spent the entire Magic Band set waiting for a crappy burger. Still, I saw some awesome sets that weekend - Mission of Burma, Bardo Pond, JOMF ... that order is screwed up, though. Sonic Youth and Iggy were the headliners.
