Best coffee shops in Amsterdam

My good friend is leaving soon for his first visit to the glorious city of Amsterdam. He was curious of the "best" coffee shops in the city. I unfortunately haven't been to the city in over 10 years and am a bit out of date. We'd love your suggestions and please include locations if applicable.

I spent several week in Amsterdam and the cafe I found to be the best was the Blue Dolphin on Kirkstrat. Everything's sativa and lets you funcion, especially over a cup of their wonderful espreso. They have free wi-fi and the Morocan who owns the joint is always present and a great guy.

Yes, the space cakes are dangerous. I've seen many a well-smoked friend go down hard off one of those. The saddest, of course, is watching an inexperienced explorer implode slowly and painfully.

Holy shiz, almost forgot... Go the one of the "smart shops" and get an ounce of fresh shroomies. They've got many varieties, but I think the Hawaiian ones were the absolute strongest, if you're into intense visuals. And load up on hash. It's an easy way to float through the day without getting super-stoned. Just that nice little hash high...

haha, that was my favorite back in '02, loved the ambiance! spelled rokerij, pronounced rokery, i believe. there was also this rad rock and roll styled one over near the red light district, but for some reason i can't remember the name of it :dumbo

also, a cool way to collect some free souvenirs is to grab a drink coaster from each of the shops. i have a rad shadowbox on my wall with all the ones i got and some are f'n rad! one has a cartoon guy sitting there with the top of his head open and his brain on the table smoking a joint. i think i got it at bulldogs in the Leidseplein.

There are a few rock themed shops... There are 2 or 3 " The Doors" coffeeshops. They play "The End" at closing time every night. Nothing beats tripping on shrooms while smoking a joint laced with hash while drinking a Guinness at 1AM while the guitar intro to "The End" begins... Well, unless you were getting a blowjob at the same time... Otherwise, you're golden at "The Doors" at the end of night. Also, there's a Pink Floyd themed shop. Again, both of these are mainly for late night enjoyment. The other places are your day places.

There are underground, all night coffee shops and some of the clubs were open all night. Unfortunately, you gotta have an in with the locals to know about some of these spots. Also sleeping was usually a welcome option.

Agreed. A perfect experience. Especially when you're tripping so hard on shrooms that you can't tell whether or not your bartender is a male, female, or possibly a lemon wedge. Really, they cut me off from the bar because I was shrooming so hard. Actually, they just took my beer, then I asked "where's my beer" then they said "what beer?"/ regardless, a cool place.

And as for the "what else to do in Amsty"... Anne Frank's house (esp. if you are an NMH fan), a museum of either Dali or Van Gogh? Christ, I was always too fucked up. Good random lasagna restaurants. Nice markets to get random groceries. And for kicks, go watch the nutties outside the red-light places... Seriously, people wait in lines to fuck a random prostitute. I mean, there's desperation and then there';s waiting in line, wondering "Hmm... I bet that dude only lasts 20 minutes, and the guy behind him will go 30, and..."... By all means, smoke a joint, take hallucinogens, and go to the red Light district and watch people line up to fuck strange, potentially deadly, diseased prostitutes and just laugh... And want to cry...
