Tom, did you dl my mix of songs by the National? Because I don't remember if you know them. Because you would like them, I'm rather certain. Because I won't dl your mix if you didn't get mine.
Actually that's not true. I'm getting 5 am just after I get Kristen's mix for which I am also excited.

All the mixes on this page are really good. Thanks guys.
Here is an intro to the Dandy Warhols. I didn't change the album names to one thing, so the order doesn't really matter, but it would be nice if you listened to them in this order.

Tom, I get around.
Kristen, I don't joke about traveling. When a friend invites me to visit her in Budapest or Marrakech I go. When a friend suggests we take the Trans-Siberian railway for a month of vodka-induced Dostoevsky reading, I buy my ticket the next day. Seriously. If you knew me better, you would already know this. But it's okay, you have time to learn.

Hi. I have a question. But before I ask my question I want to make one thing clear: I am not complaining. This is not a complaint. Kristen, Hannah, (& Andrew wherever you are), do not think this is intended as a criticism.
OK. so. here's my question. How do I import these playlists into iTunes and preserve the unity of the playlist? How do I keep the individual songs from being scattered to the various artists/album titles? or is that not preventable? should i just do that and then recreate it as a playlist (which means clicking and dragging in the right order)? what do I do?
I know I'm being unclear, so I'll try to explain. On Kristen's mix (for example; lots of people do this; I'm not singling her out) the tags on the mp3 file have perserved the original album title. So if I import it into iTunes it will store track 1 under Rolling Stones, album Goat's Head Soup. so on and so forth on all the tracks. so if i does that, I can't play the mix as Kristen intended, unless i create an iTunes playlist, in which case I have to have a list of the songs in front of me as I click and drag the stuff.
What I really want to have though is a Compilations album called 'Broke Down' so then it's just there. But I don't know how to do that without importing the songs, and seeking each out individually and editing its tag after importing. I have 8200 songs on iTunes, so seeking out individual tracks for edit is a pain in the ass.
My question is: am I missing something? is there an easier way to do this? what do other people do? what do you do?
thank you.
edit: and apologies for such a longwinded, verbose, prolix, randy-esque post.

I use Musicmatch Jukebox, but I guess the easiest way to do it on iTunes would be to create the playlist after the fact. In the future I'll change the album names for the mixes though, to preserve continuity and save you the trouble.

i didn't rename the actual track info to go along with the order i wanted it played in, so itunes will just automatically pull the info "incorrectly".

Tom,
This is what I do:
I download the mix and then copy & paste it into the directory I store my music in (I actually have a subfolder for mixes). I then paste the zip file into the folder I want.
The next thing I do is extract the files from the zip file and then delete or move the zip file away from the folder with the songs from the mix. Then, I make sure the songs from the mix are all together in one distinct and properly labeled folder.
The next thing I do is create my playlist in iTunes and name it ("ewiggy mix, etc). Then I click on the empty playlist. At this point, I have two windows up - the Itunes playlist window and the window that shows the folder of the mix. I then drag the ENTIRE FOLDER of the mix from that window into the playlist window on iTunes.
The songs will be copied there (and also added to your iTunes library automatically) and probably out of order. Keeping the iTunes window open, I then go back to the board and find the post with the mix and the song order listed.
Then, I select the first song in my iTunes playlist and right click and select "Get Info." A screen pops up that looks like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/yablonowitz/itunesinfo1.jpg
I then select the info tab. This will give me a window that looks like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v682/yablonowitz/itunesinfo2.jpg
I then delete ANYTHING in the "Album artist" field. Forget about that field. Also, I then choose a name for the mix, if one hasn't been provided for me and enter that into the ALBUM field of every track from the mix (making very sure each song has the album name entered exactly the same as all the other tracks). Also, I look over at the fields that say "Disc Number _ of _". If there are any numbers in there at all, I delete them. Then I look in the "Track Number" field. I find what number song the song I've got up is on the mix. Say the first song I pulled up in the iTunes playlist is supposed to be the 5th song of the actual mix. I would then change the "Track Number" field to 5. Now, I need to decide whether or not to enter a fixed number in the second field. If I do, I have to put that same number in that field of EVERY track.
So, say it's a 15 song mix and I've selected song five as we said, I'd enter "Track List: 5 of 15." Or I can just fill in the first field so it says "5 of _." Either way, it has to REMAIN CONSISTENT with that second field. When I'm done, I hit next or save and then go through each song until they are in the right order.
Is this helpful? Or understandable? Or even something you didn't know before?

this is funny cuz I spent part of yesterday afternoon trying to figure out why the tracks weren't ordered correctly even after I'd put in the track order. I eventually did figure out, exactly as you say here: the Album Artist and Disc Number fields can screw up the track order. So, I think I figured it out just a couple hours before you posted this.
The little trick about copying the mix straight into a playlist (rather than "add folder to library" and then handpicking the songs one by one onto a playlist) is a new one to me, though. That seems like it'll be very helpful. Thanks.

That's what I do. My iTunes sidebar is basically a big list of the people on the board who are awesome enough to post mixes. And ones I'm making, but those usually just have some gibberish title that starts with an A so that they will be at the top of the list.

It's been 11 hours since a mix was posted in this thread so we're due for another one. Or two. I would wait but that would involve not posting.
Anyway, appropriate to the recent flood of mixes I got carried away here. This isn't a hey, I think people would like these songs mix. This is a hey, damn I love these songs mix. This is a hey I like the music I like and I'm gonna put it on this mix.
Also it got too long and I couldn't rightly cut it down so it's gonna be two parts. They fit together like puzzle pieces, though the Main mix flows fine all on it's own. The Bonus/Intersititals mix is the more out there (with respect to this board's collective music tastes, that is) selections. Mostly. It's also got some stuff I've been through with the board before.
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i269/mountmccabe/Avatars/2811ad7e.jpg (http://www.sendspace.com/file/lon5ca)
Main - 15 songs - 74.5 MB (54:52)
01 - Flying Canyon - Down to Summer
03 - Red House Painters - Lord Kill the Pain
06 - Hello Saferide - Long Lost Penpal
07 - Sambassadeur - If Rain
08 - Shearwater - Red Sea, Black Sea
09 - Destroyer - Priest's Knees
11 - Willard Grant Conspiracy - Dance With Me
14 - Waylon Jennings - Just To Satisfy You
17 - The Sonics - It's All Right
18 - Minor Threat - I Don't Wanna Hear It
21 - Big Black - Precious Thing
23 - Entombed - Out of Hand
25 - The Paper Chase - Aliveralungakidneyathumb
26 - Bettie Serveert - Log 22
27 - Tim Fite & Danielle Stetch Homsy - From the Sky to the Ground
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i269/mountmccabe/Avatars/e48386a5.jpg (http://www.sendspace.com/file/utg4ex)
Bonus - 12 songs - 82.3 MB (55:07)
02 - Arab Strap - Screaming in the Trees
04 - Norfolk & Western - Arrangements Made
05 - Bailter Space - Galaxy
10 - Eric Dolphy - Hat and Beard
12 - Lucinda Williams - Changed the Locks
13 - Two Gallants - Seems Like Home To Me (Daytrotter sessions)
15 - Unknown Somali Artist - Unknown Folk Song
16 - Muddy Waters - I Feel Like Going Home
19 - The Slits - Shoplifting
20 - Rites of Spring - Other Way Around
22 - Nasum - Fury
24 - Amon Amarth - Death in Fire
Again I know the Main part flows fine on it's own; I didn't listen to the Bonus selection set seperately.

This mix is for anyone with a serious interest in real blues music, specifically that of Ry Cooder. If you claim to like blues at all regardless of whether or not you've heard of him, you need to download this. The man's a legend of true, dirty, soulful blues music, who would go on to do some collaboration work with the legendary Taj Mahal, and is prominently featured in the documentary about the Buena Vista Social Club.

Nice mix! I'll be downloading for the few songs I don't already have. For the most part, "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning" is my favorite Sinatra song, but "Fly Me To The Moon" and also "Stardust" have been known to take over the top spot occasionally.

So I made this mix up for Fickle and TeamCoachella (I think it was you two) who'd said they didn't like Oasis, and so I offered to try to give them an introduction. Die-hard fans might say that this is too hits-heavy--mostly really popular songs with a few of my personal favorites that I don't think get enough due. Any criticism would be welcome but of course ignored. I'm trying to show these boys why Oasis is awesome--might as well hit them with some shit they've heard.

In the recent Summer Mix Contest, I was reponsible for "Another Roadside Attraction." Here's a selection of alternate songs that I considered, but rejected, for the mix I eventually submitted. Considering that mix's relatively poor showing, these songs are either the victim of poor judgment or generally poor taste in music. Whichever, these are the songs that got left alongside the road. Click the title to download.

As I said, it was a mix targeted to introduce and endear a couple folks completely unfamiliar with their catalog. I went with a lot of the big hits, a few notable lesser knowns, and filled in the rest with whatever I like.
Please feel free to make another Oasis mix. Mine was not an attempt at an authoritative or in-the-know mix, it was aimed at a pretty low common denominator. I would appreciate you schooling me in mix format, in you like.

I got the Black Keys mix and can't wait to listen to it,since I enjoyed what I saw of them at Coachella.I'm currently in Michigan and the mix is back home in Gilbert,so I'll get a chance to listen to it on Friday.
Also I want to note on the Costello Mix,it was a lot easier to make, once Tom put up his here (http://www.coachella.com/forum/showpost.php?p=233119&postcount=868).It was impossible for me to put all the lesser known songs(I Want You,Night Time, etc.) on a mix without sacrificing the "must-haves"(Accidents,Chelsea,etc.) and I was at total gridlock until Tom posted his mix.

Thanks for the mix, Tom. Besides our Hold Steady differences, I'm usually on board with your musical tastes... Also loved how you put Lee Harvey and John Wayne Gacy Jr. back-to-back... I know there have been a handful of songs written about Booth, but does anyone know if there has been one written about Sirhan Sirhan? Just a random question. Good mix, though.

Ummm....yeah, I made a mix of songs from the first four albums of a band I loved in college - The Samples. I don't know what their music sounds like now because I sort of moved to a different place, musically. These songs, though, will always be dear to my heart even if some are a wee bit sillyhearted. I saw them live three times in the span of a year and half and everytime, just came out smiling. This music still does it for me. Though some of you younger punks might laugh.
A Samples Sampler (http://www.bigupload.com/d=C4U7EF9N2J)
1. "When It's Raining" (No Room)
2. "Carry On" (The Last Drag)
3. "Waited Up" (s/t)
4. "The Streets in the Rain" (The Last Drag)
5. "Nothing Lasts Long" (No Room) They played this the day that John Candy died and dedicated it to him, it made me sniff.
6. "Weight of the World" (Autopilot)
7. "Feel Us Shaking" (s/t)
8. "Little Silver Ring" (The Last Drag)

For a band that is not a jam band but kinda has that same audience, and a lead singer who sounds like Sting, they're pretty good. IMO.

I was gonna put up a track list but if we're throwing around mystery mixes, then I'm gonna be lazy about it. One 20 minute track. 15 artists that flow in and out of each other. Takes a few minutes to pick up the groove, but i enjoy it. Kind of on the dancey side. If anyone would like a track list feel free to ask.
I was gonna post an image link, but failed miserably =/

As much as I love current music, and even though I wasn't old enough for it to make an impression on me the first time around, my absolute favorite musical time period stretches roughly from 1978-1984. The punk explosion of '77 had passed, and the genre had packed up and headed to art school. It was dark, it was moody, and it was inventive. Call this an ode to post-punk. I think they decided to go with songs he wrote primarily. The only song he didn't write on that album is Corinna Corinna. The outtakes are mostly covers(Baby Please Don't Go,Going To New Orleans,Milk Cow Calf's Blues) and the ones that aren't have shown up elsewhere (Mixed-Up Confusion,Talking John Birch Paranoid Blues).
That's Alright Mama is the best Bob Dylan studio outtake that has never been officially released,IMO
It's interesting that the the guitar part at the beginning is nearly identical to one he'd use later on Subterranean Homesick Blues.

Tom posted a great Lucinda Williams mix in the Artist Discography thread yesterday...

Let's Active is a band I never thought I'd run across again.
Ditto Matthew Sweet. Ditto Hoodoo Gurus. I'm surprised there wasn't any Soup Dragons on there too, it would have kept with the theme.

I didn't really think about Soup Dragons. I was going to put Saint Etienne, but cut them because they are less straightforward pop and more of a dance-y act.

You confuse me Andrew. Either you didn't really think about them, or you were going to put them and then cut them because they are too dance-y. which is it?

Roberto,
you are without a doubt very knowledgable about music. however, even Babe Ruth struck out on occasion. "House of the Rising Sun" was a hit by the Animals, yes, but it was not theirs; it is an Appalachian folk song whose origins are unknown and is generally credited as "traditional". And Dylan covered it before Burdon did. "Toys in the Attic", however, is without question an Aerosmith song, off the album of the same name, one of the first albums I ever owned.
Tom
PS have you heard Bowie's cover of "It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City"? it doesn't work.

Damn. I typed "Kiss" without even realizing it. I blame the wine. And the fact that I almost included The Replacements' version of Kiss' "Black Diamond," so my wires got crossed. Thanks, and fixed on both counts.

I was not aware that Lowery wrote "Sick of Goodbyes" with Linkous. I was not aware that Cracker recorded the song before Sparklehorse did.
Also I also didn't realize that "House of the Rising Sun" wasn't an original with the Animals until either (a) I was looking for info on the song after hearing Jandek's version or (b) after hearing a version from Leadbelly.

Agreed. But his version of "Growin' Up" (on the Diamond Dogs rerelease CD) does IMO.The fact that he covered both of these before Springsteen blew up shows him to be a pretty good judge of talent also...
EDIT
And great upload Roberto.I have most of those but I'm eager to hear the ones I don't,particularly the Red House Painters one.
