I keep checking York's website to see what the songs on Mystery Mix 10 are.If you haven't got them you are missing out.Every one has been really great.I think so far 6 and 8 have been my favorites...

I swear Breakjaw is not an alias of mine... Anyway, thanks for the kind words. Mystery Mix 11 is now up, along with the playlist for #10. (http://nowherenothin.blogspot.com)

You're welcome.I want to add that alot of these songs are from mixes posted here by others.Normally I try to not use songs that other people post here, but since this was a very specific topic (Rain),and I didn't want to use the most obvious ones (The Cult,Led Zep,The Beatles,The Who,Gene Kelly, etc.) I broke my rule.So thanks to whoever if I used a song from your mix.

I've only heard his new one a couple times but it seemed rather unremarkable to me. Could it just be that it's a "grower"?

TomAz

It's pretty much a folk record. If you're expecting "Hard Core Troubadour" it won't hit you. I like it cuz it's more focused, with better songwriting, and less out-of-his-ass talking, than anything since El Corazon.

No,I'd love to hear her version of "Meeting Across The River" though. And I'm a big Marc Ribot fan also. She is great live IMO.I saw her about 15 years ago at Anderson's Fifth Estate.
I'm getting the New York mix immediately.

I thought he wrote some really good political songs and some really retarded ones on his last two albums.

Yeah that one.Sorry to take so long to reply,I just got home from work.It has that excellent Replacements take on "Cruella DeVille",Tom Waits' "Heigh-Ho",a really lovely version of "Baby Mine" from Dumbo.I think it was one of the albums that spawned the whole "let's have an album of today's artists covering songs of a particular genre" thing.Well that and the soundtrack from the movie "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".

Excellent mixes! There have been so many over the last weeks, and I haven't been able to listen to them (other than the Mystery Mixes). This is primarily a space, not a time, problem.I have two hard drives, one which holds my downloaded zip files, and one which has my gargantuan iTunes folder, and also my Windows system stuff. This is the hard drive that is always hovering around 100 MB.So eventually I'm gonna go through my iTunes and delete stuff, and then I can listen to the great stuff everyone has posted lately, going all the way back to Hannah's last mix.
The Mystery Mixes have been perfect, because I can just drag the one file to my nano, delete it from iTunes and listen at work.Plus all of them have been really really well done, and I like the artists included on them.
EDIT
But I did get the one by fullonidle and enjoyed it immensely.I'm gonna have to buy that Band Of Horses CD,so far I've heard 3 great songs off of it.

Also the a-ha and Scott Walker and Althea & Donna and such mix it up well, I think. Plus you'll love that song by the Electric Prunes. Late 60s Garage Pop FTW.

But I may be biased.

I had not heard that Althea & Donna song (or ever heard of them, for that matter). that's a cool song.

It's not so much about the numbers, that threw me way off too. It's more about the order of the artists included...

As a sidenote on The Smiths mix...
I included the live version of How Soon Is Now? which I found here (http://jamiesrunoutgroove.blogspot.com/2006/09/mp3-smiths-live-in-los-angeles-1986.html),and is mistakenly attributed to the Universal Amphitheatre show on 8/26/86.When he was PM'ing me,PassiveTheory asked what show I saw on that tour, and with a little research at this place (http://www.passionsjustlikemine.com/gigs/smiths-g860828.htm) I found the show I attended, which was in fact, where this (and all the other songs on the "LA" boot) was recorded. So,completely unknowingly,I included a recording which possibly includes me cheering,on my own mix.
And when I say "my own mix" it's actually more a Passive Theory mix, since he devised the tracklist, with a few minor additions from me,after going back-and-forth with ideas on the order and such...

Not really. For me I start the mix with like 60 songs and try to then whittle down to 80 mins (what'll fit on a CD).So the hard part is choosing the tracklist,or rather, choosing what to bump.So the Smiths one was pretty easy, with the tracklist already chosen for the most part.
I don't know why,but I've given myself the insane task of trying to do one for The Cure next.

mountmccabe
10-24-2007, 03:56 PM
I don't know, Jeff. I don't have/use iTunes so I don't check anything against there. I edited id3 tags and filenames so that they should be ordered right but maybe iTunes is looking at some other metadata. So if you want to listen in the correct order look at the tracklisting I posted, the filenames or listen for the bands in the song.

Oh, wait, I did get iTunes. But I've only used it once.

That happens to me sometimes. There's a way to fix it. I wish I remembered what it was.

It might have something to do with clicking the header right above the track number column. or one of those headers. to sort by track order.

edit: or maybe not track #. maybe the first column on the left.

SHIFT _ SPACESUIT
http://download.yousendit.com/1D64A1BE4705EA82
FROM AMAZON.COM
Far more melodic than most harcore music, this album still has a certain harcore "attitude" about it--syncopated vocal delivery, low-fi, riff-heavy guitar, and the usual upbeat messages about self-reliance and stuff. The melodicism, combined with Joshua Loucka's androgynous vocals, convey a sense of fragility that's usually lacking in hardcore. This only makes the overall effect that much more gutsy, though. The quiet acoustic numbers are a little TOO sappy and fragile--Shift shine when they rock. The title track is a real winner with a guitar line that never wears out. The new album Get In, their major label debut, is kind of a letdown--the band don't seem as sure of how they want to sound and the high point is, not surprsingly, a new version of "Spacesuit." Here's hoping they get their groove back on the next album.

I would have sworn that was Adam Sandler.I thought maybe you got it from The Wedding Singer soundtrack.Mike Watt always did have a thing for Blue Oyster Cult, though.Somewhere I have the 45 of The Minutemen doing "The Red and The Black"...

Anyway, Vol. 21 is now up. (http://nowherenothin.blogspot.com)
I really enjoyed 20 at work also...

and... holy crap, bj, thanks for the Roxy Music and Eno.
I tested out both downloads and with the Roxy Music I came up with a corrupted file for Track 5,"Mother Of Pearl".I will reup the whole mix but in the meantime,if you click that song in the list, you can get it from YSI.When I am downloading zips of other mixes,I have found if I click the "Keep Broken Files" option in WinRar,they come out just fine, with no audible indication of why they were a corrupt file.Anyways, sorry about that,I wanted to get both mixes up together, for some reason.I'm still planning on doing a rundown on Roxy Music in the "Young'uns" thread (the Eno one I put up last night) tomorrow or the next day.

Thanks. With both this one and the Eno,I tried to go in rough chronological order, because they sort of go with the stuff I'm writing about them in the "Young'uns" thread.
While "Jealous Guy" actually came out in late '80 (as a tribute to Lennon),the version on here was from their last live album "Heart Still Beating" so it's the last track.I love "Dream Home" so much I titled the mix from one of the lyrics and the cover picture refers to it also. You are right,it would be perfect to close out a mix.Interestingly,it doesn't close out "Viva!" (the live album it's on) "Do The Strand" does. That was also a hard one to leave off the mix.

Breakjaw did I miss a Friday mix?

breakjaw
02-07-2008, 12:10 AM
No,I'm holding off on doing a Friday one 'till closer to the show.Partly because I want to see if there's any big additions, and also because I don't want to fall too in love with Friday, since I may want to skip it.
It's killing me that I have a great version of Into The Mystic by The Swell Season (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=4ED458D664E7D211) that I want to put on the mix, tho'

I didn't hunt down any Floggin Molly, even though I have them on a Warped CD somewhere, and like them."Shipping Down To Boston" seemed to fit in the mix,but I just listened without and it still seems to work.
