I have this weird tic. Anytime someone mentions sondre lerche I have to say "he's a Norwegian prodigy!" because when I bought his first album there were stickers all over his cover promoting this fact and I thought it was a strange marketing ploy.

Amy, do you always listen to the rules? They are not going to pat you down ok? And just have your husband put it in his pocket and they wont say anything. Just watch it on the flash and they wont do anything to you, at the worst they ask you to put it away.. If I listened to these ''rules'' I would never have photos to show anyone.

John, it should be fantastic, yes? I've never seen Les Savy Fav before, and I just happened to find this show on the Bowery's website. If I were in New York one day earlier, I would have gone to see A Place to Bury Strangers, as they seem like they would be intense, and intensely loud, live.

New Pornographers were good tonight. Lavendar Diamond makes me want to kill myself, except for one song called 'open your heart', after which i tried to convince Keriann that it was a Camera Obscura cover because it sounds nothing like LDs other songs. it is not. but they're totally biting from CO.

the singer chick from LD should really look into less of a career with this band and more of a career as a comedian. i lol'd.

there was one terrible moment (ok, there were several, but i choose to tell you about this one) during LD where the guitarist made a comment about not having a beer, and then he said to the audience "hey, i have 13 days today.." and the audience was completely silent. like no one got it. it was pretty sad. he was obviously looking for encouragement, or a WOOOO or something. sorry sober dude.

Neko and Dan were both there tonight, making it just about 300 people on stage. there were two guys on the left that didn't do anything. they have like, an extra keyboardist and an extra guitarist. they should trim that shit up.

anyway it was good and we had more fun than everyone at the LCD/AF show combined. maybe.

also this bartender at the fonda with a faux hawk must really either hate life or his job or me. maybe he's just upset about his untimely and unattractive haircut.

Check the Foo Fighters thread in here, under lots of discussion. They had a pre sale yesterday for it, that sold out in a milisecond. Nobody knows if there are even more tickets going to be sold at 5pm, because it could be a formality and all the tickets were sold yesterday.

i love l.a. weathermen, they all seriously had the biggest boner the last couple days because they had something to talk about. once again, a major cocktease. my favorite is when they show the temps for the so. cal. area. why not just average it out instead of showing all the areas that are 1or 2 degrees apart. 68 hollywood,68 pomona,68 newport,67 irvine,66 santa monica,69 long beach,68 burbank,68 santa ana...fuck it, it's about 68 degrees everywhere.

Venue wasn't even half full, but seeing as how this 1500 capacity venue almost never sells out (unless it's Morrissey, Prince, APC, STP, etc), it was a strong turnout. Good crowd, except for a couple obnoxious, drunks that kept yelling incoherent, irrelevant nonsense. Encore break felt like the longest ever, and when they finally came out, these girls in front of me were yelling requests at Kazu, and I yelled "play whatever you want" and she said "what? play whatever I want?" LOLZ. She and her dog ran past me while I was in line, but they went into the tourbus so I didn't get to say hi or anything. Good times. Her dancing is hypnotic and really fits the music, and a lot of songs had extended outros, which was bonus. No "Misery", though. Oh wells.

I got back from Air a little bit ago. I thought they put on a great, albeit extremely short, show. They only played for an hour 20 or so, which kind of stinks, but oh well. The rain actually wasn't too bad, as it didn't really pick up until after the show ended.

I will say that I sat next to some of the worst people I have ever seen at a concert. No one stood up the entire show and most of them came to the show to talk loudly with their friends. We also had a group of 4 extremely drunk douchebags who obviously were not in our section occupying random seats whenever someone got up. When the people would come back, they would tell the people who were SITTING there before getting up to take care of whatever to move to open seats elsewhere. One of them looked like Kid Rock, and he was about as cool as him too. He made chimpanzee noises instead of cheering. Luckily we only had to deal with them for like 4 songs.

I would love to give you a setlist, but I can't remember it. Anyone want to help me out?

went to see sea wolf + sondre + air. got there on time but the box office couldnt locate my name on the guestlist. it was retarded. i missed the first three songs of sea wolf and i was supposed to shoot their gig. i was pissed that i wasnt allowed to continue shooting for the night cuz supposedly my photo pass was only good for sea wolf. goddamnit.

i really wanted to shoot sondre's gig. hes so gorgeous. lol. he put on a great one-man show. i'm always impressed by his musicianship. then air went on, and we decided to leave after three songs...yup...i just remembered not digging them that much at coachella, and again last night. i let a couple sit in our seats after we left the venue, so that was one good deed ive done in the past couple years or so.

What a fun 10 days:

L.A. Invasion last saturday-mainly went to see Foo Fighters
Justin Timberlake at Staples Monday
Foo Fighters taping of Nissan Live Sets at Fox Studios on Tuesday(premiers October 1st at yahoo.com)
Muse in Irvine Friday
and on Monday will be Foo Fighters at the Fonda

it feels like when i used to work in the music biz and hit up shows like this week after week.

unfortunately, tuesday it is off to the sick house for me. had sinus surgery a couple weeks ago and turns out the crap they pulled out of them is resistant to all oral meds, so gotta go and get a picc line put in for a few weeks of i.v. meds. i shoulda been in this week, but music, as always, tends to come first for me.

There was a whopping 38 people at the The Besnard Lakes show at the troubadour tonite. I guess everyone was at Air or Muse or hadn't heard of this wonderful band yet.
Despite the small turnout they were in good spirits (possibly drunk), and they explained that their midwest tour was a bust, and they thanked L.A. for saving them. The sound was a wall of sonic psychedelic guitar with nice drifty far away vocals.
Best time I've had at the Troubadour this year so far. I'd absolutely see them again anywhere.

Saw Prince last night, on the final show of his 21 in London. He played for just over 2 hours, and it was bloody amazing. First arena show i've acually enjoyed by anyone. He rolled out hit after hit, even doing a 5 song set with just him and a piano as his first encore. Purple Rain was mind blowing.

We had the most incredible luck at the Air show last night. Not only did suprefan Chris give us a ride to the show (thanks, Chris!), we were seated next to schoolio, chrislasf, and kerrieann; and chrislasf gave us a ride back to our motel (thanks, Chris!). Crazy coincidence, huh? It was raining right before and after the show, and we would've had to walk a mile and a half uphill (both ways!!) in the rain, unless we decided to stack-park.

I thought the AIR show was damn near amazing and definitely not too short. Come on, we already had to deal with that super short Coachella set, and this was much longer that that. They did have a bit of a slow start--the vocals and harmonies didn't always sound right in the first several songs, but I swear as the night went on, each song sounded better and better and BETTER. Rain sprinkled on and off but never enough to get in the way. Gabe was saying that this was about the best the sound has ever been at the Greek.

Good show, and it was really cool meeting all those boardmembers out of nowhere. I should also mention that at Muse (in Mesa), Somewhat Damaged recognized me and introduced himself.

I didn't get the order, but I think the setlist looked something like this. I might have missed a song or two. If anyone has the whole thing, please feel free to correct me.

Electronic Performers, Napalm Love, Talisman, Run, Venus, Cherry Blossom Girl, Remember, Redhead Girl, People in the City, Mer du Japon, Don’t Be Light, Kelly Watch the Stars

Canon SD630, its my ''people picture'' camera. You need those bright lights like that to get those results though, I dropped the exposure down to make them look all dark and the lights would stick out more, same with the other one. I'll post a few more soon.

in the words of one of the performers at street scene today, it was like "nochella." seriously...there was like no one there. air was the second to last headliner at one stage and i walked over to their set as they were playing and could walk up almost to the barricade. it was really fucking sad. z trip had about 50 people in the tent when he first started, and the sound was TERRIBLE for his set. i felt so bad for him. simian mobile disco was alright, but not really my thing. brand new rocked, but its hard getting used to jesse completely changing up the songs. it's not bad, just...unexpected and hard to sing along with. vnv nation was actually pretty damn good. i've heard great things about them and was definitely captivated without knowing any of the material. album leaf was like EITS coachella. it was sunny out but with a breeze and the background of the area by coors amphitheatre reminded me of arizona so it was gorgeous and just kinda felt like heaven a little bit. the killers have pretty much bottled up las vegas and taken it on tour with them. their show is now so extravagant, so much excess, it almost makes me want to throw up. they started out with a sigur ros-esque scrim that showed videos and larger images of the band. they shot out a lot of confetti and brandon still can't sing. but the crowd was loving it. we left after four songs and drove back up to la. it seems like street scene has lost enough fans now that they can successfully move back to the streets of downtown san diego no problem.

suprefan
09-24-2007, 12:34 AM
Wow, way to go Live Nation you royally screwed this one up. I wonder if the guy who sold it is crying because something he helped create into a staple in SD has now been beat to death. LN made the worst decision in buying this festival, but odds are they will change its name and do something else with it like an article the other day was stating. I figured everyone will still not go just to protest and show them that this wasnt the way SS was meant to be. Guess we can add that to the list of festivals that will no longer exist after this year.

Who's going to Ulrich Schnauss next week, and do you think it's worth the drive from the OC? He seems a bit sleepy for a live show.

RockStr4Life
09-24-2007, 04:03 PM

LA fans can suck sometimes. That's definetly a pet peeve of mine talking during shows. I did see a show in New York at there was just as much talking as in LA. Thats funny that you guys ended up standing by each other. A little behind on the posts but I have to go onto campus to use internet.

Just see him at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa on the 7th if you don't want to drive. Although Manual is amazing, and would be worth the trip by himself (he is not playing the Costa Mesa date).

Well the Smashing Pumpkins were excellent tonight....they played Zero, bullets with butterfly wings, 1979, today, tonight tonight....

they played for about 2h 5min or so....long setlist it felt like, really awesome show. During the song United States instead of going into the Star Spangel Banner, they went into O Canada, which made the crowd very happy. It was alot better than I expected...they did 2 encores...overall great energy and fun show. Billy made a speech at the end about how his cd was #2 in america, but it was #1 in Canada, and thanked us for not buying Bon Jovi that week, and said he admitted Bon Jovi had better hair than he did. He seemed very genuine and blown away by the audience. I saw a fan with a setlist at the end of the show, and the last song on the set was Ava Adore, but they played many more after that tune...so they must have just been throwing shit in since they were having a good time.

Sweet, I will let you know if I end up having to do that. To answer your previous question, I only know one person who saw Ulrich live, but she said he was phenomenal. But this was for his last tour, not the 2007 version. I'd say you should go.

PS: Tix are only $8 for the Detroit Bar show. I have seen pictures of the venue, and the place looks amazing.

I'll be there. (LA)

Anyone hear of the Black Angels? I was browsing through an old Spin magazine at work last week and saw that they'd been at this year's Bonnaroo, and so was surprised to see that they'll be descending upon Plush tomorrow night. I'll be working so I'll be getting paid to hear them.

Also, just found out yesterday that the Melvins will be playing October 21 at my job. Pretty much all the employees want to see the show, so considering I'll be out of town the following weekend for Vegoose, I'm probably going to be one of the folks who'll have to work that night.

You have to see The Black Angels. Like, stop working when they come on. They play really thick, bluesy drones. Kind of heavy, mostly because it's all fuzzed out. They'll put you in a nice trance. Really good live.

Awesome, glad to hear it. And supre, I was mentioning that I had to work the show in a positive way. Like, not only don't I have to pay the $8 cover, I'll be making money (not much, but some is better than none) while there.

Oh yeah, rage patton, one of the bands that played last night was called O'Death and I thought you might dig them. They had a sort of Gogol Bordello vibe. I haven't heard much Gogol Bordello but the energy the band played with and the crowd interaction (about 40 people to a 10:00 show on a Monday night in Tucson) struck me as being reminiscent. I struck up a conversation with the girl selling their merchandise for the sole purpose of finding out if they may be coming up to your neck of the woods soon. (They won't, can't get into Canada.) But I got their Myspace address (http://www.myspace.com/odeath) if you wanted to check 'em out.

unfortunately the music scene isn't that great out there. for bigger acts look at the pipeline cafe but besides that looking for flyers of reggae is your best bet. i was living in waikiki and i could hardly ever find anything decent. most of the time asking locals would get me the most info. i guess thats the trade off for living in paradise.

I caught !!! last night, another good show.. It was a completely different setlist than Coachella's performance:

Yadnus
Must be the Moon
All My Heroes are Wierdos
Myth Takes
Bend Over Beethoven
??? - a new song, funk/soul in sound... followed by an electro dance tune..
Heart of Hearts
Intensify

..as best as I could remember...

Their woman singer defintely has more of an expanded role, taking over John Pugh's prescence.. I thought she delivered with awesome energy, even crowd surfing toward the end of the show.. Nice

Overall, another sweaty dance party..

Yadnus
Must be the Moon

Bend Over Beethoven/???
New Name

Heart of Hearts

Black Angels were awesome last night. I got to work the back entrance, meaning I had to make sure people didn't try sneaking in through the back or leave with drinks. There were about 60 people there and they were all safely inside watching the show so I pretty much got to see their entire set without interruption. Their drummer is ferocious, their guitar work is mesmerizing, and of all the bands that get name checked as sounding like the Velvet Underground, they actually do, particularly on their last song. I spoke with the lead singer afterwards and asked how their Bonnaroo experience was and if we could expect them at Coachella next year. He said they got to play at night at Bonnaroo, which is the ideal time to experience their music, and that they're hoping to land a gig at Coachella but that it's really competitive. Their album covers and the posters they had for sale were also really nice; I'd have liked to get one of each but I didn't have any money and they couldn't take credit cards. This is a band to keep an eye on.

...with Candy, Treats, Ghosts, and a special Halloween video installation provided by blasthaus & *onthefly films. Costume attire strongly suggested.

MSTRKRFT's JFK and ALP are here to up the ante as rock's merger with electro continues to incite, excite, and rumble its way into dance charts the world over. They've been smashing down musical boundaries between punk, house, grime, electro, and more since their 2004 remix of The Panther's "Thank Me With Your Hands," and haven't looked back since. After the universal success of Death From Above 1979, the duo's rock & roll disco dance project with drummer Sebastian Grainger, it was clear the world was ready for the fresh and engaging sound of MSTRKRFT.

that's odd that they'd cancel. There's like 40 members of that troup.

At BM we travelled all over the playa with them on a giant art car and they'd perform whenever we stopped. My buddy and I got to DJ on the car between sets. DJ'ing just isnt the same now after being able to control the giant flame thrower button. Every DJ booth should have one of those.
