I hate that song so much. It made me hate phil collins. I like most of his stuff too. Its like the beach boys when they came out with kokomo and were performing it on full house every other week. It was the last straw.

Oh this made me smile though....

The Radiohead fan calling the Shins live show boring?...

Right... Check please.

I've seen the Shins live and they are boring. James Mercer doesn't have much charisma and even seems kind of awkward on stage not too mention that he doesn't really sing loud enough to be heard over the music half the time. People were yelling at him to sing louder/turn the mike up.

Never seen Radiohead, but I don't see how anyone can say this looks boring.

Justice was good tonight. The crowd was very LA. Second GA show in a row where, for whatever reason, I was in the one spot that people had to enter/exit from. And there was some chick taking pictures for about 15 minutes directly behind me. But the flash was kind of like a strobe light I guess? Fun show, nice grooves.

Because it was, that's just a fact. Hell, both times I've seen the Shins live I was absolutely entertained. Don't know why the hell you can't appreciate them live, but seriously, someone who intentionally go see a band to fucking sleep doesn't deserve the fucking right to voice his opinion.

I'd even go see Radiohead... If it meant I'd get to see a far more superb live show after them (i.e. MBV, Portishead, The Pixies, Muse, Daft Punk, etc. I think you get the picture).

a little late... but I went to the Shins show at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Saturday night and never stood up from my seat once. The only thing that got me excited was their cover of Pink Floyd's "Breathe." Other than that, it was a pretty boring show. They played well, sounded good, but never really engaged the crowd. and WAY TOO MANY cell phones.

Yeah, no kidding. I hate it when bands cancel shows in Arizona citing "exhaustion" then play in California a short time later. At least fucking make a half-assed attempt at rescheduling a later show, especially if you cancel TWO shows in the state. I'm really glad I didn't bother with getting their CD 'cause shit like this shows how little they respect some of their fans, potential and otherwise.

Oh trust me, when I finished getting what I wanted. I went off, also I rocked out a lot after the show during DJ Mehdi.

And did you not see me like do the guitar fingers and headbang til my head fell off during the encore?

Also, last night I went crazy, this was in part to having a security gaurd on front of me for the last like 40 minutes of their set, so no photos or whatever. I didnt care cause I had gotten what I wanted at that point, so again I went crazy.

Yea it was supposed to come out the end of 06 but Richard Kelly was having problems editing it down from 3+ hours plus there are a lot of other aespects(graphic novels, websites) that prob slowed it down.

I am hoping there will be some sort of Q&A at the screening

Why thank you, I have more, but I am listening to In Rainbows right now, so I cant really process anythign else right now.

And I had more energy afterwards. Ask Steve, he thought I was like on x or soemthign the way I was jumping and running around.

Amoeba is just open for business as usual. There are no ''doors'' they dont shut down the store for this. Unless your name is Paul McCartney. Shows start at the time posted, give or take a few minutes. They should get like a 30 minute set. I miss the days when everyone woudl get like 45 - 50 minutes.

obviously i wasn't asking what time amoeba opened. christ.to his defense, i do understand how he could think that. i kinda read your question like that too - asking when door time was, when there is none. there's just a start time. but yeah for future reference, whatever time they say on the website is the show time. it's almost always 6 or 7. they played for about 40 minutes today. it was a good, solid set. off the new cd they played:
is there a ghost
ode to lrc
no one's gonna love you
lamb on the lam <3
marry song
wicked gil (an awesome slowed down version)
the funeral
the great salt lake
maybe some others too

they sounded great except there was too much bass. ben is very very nice. almost too nice. like creepy nice. i got them all to sign their new album for me. the booklet is just a bunch of photographs of places in north carolina and in san diego. so i had each of them sign a different picture. they thought it was a cool idea. :)

then i saw jose gonzalez at el rey. his show was pretty much EXACTLY like his last show at the el rey a year and a half ago, but that;s a good thing. he's excellent-sounding live. i havent listened to his new album so there were a lot of songs i didnt know this time around, but i still liked almost everything i heard. the venue was packed and the crowd was great and lapping it up. kinda bummed i have to miss his fonda show next month but oh well. twice in a year isn't too shabby.

10-12-2007, 04:07 PM
the place is beautiful, the sound was excellent, and it is set up really nicely so it seems you pretty much have a decent view from wherever you are.

i walked in halfway through the second song of the set and was able to walk halfway up to the front and have a perfectly clear view of the stage.

i didn't really realize it was so close to the Fonda - i ended up paying.. i am not even going to say how much because it is embarassing.. but i paid A LOT to park, when i could've parked on the street by the Fonda and just walked 2 blocks. grr.

suprefan
10-12-2007, 04:10 PM
You paid $20 to park right next to it. There is street parking if you look for it like you said, but there is a lot a block down that is $6 to park if all else failed. I was there the other week and I was waiting for a friend to get there and I saw all these kids just going into that lot and forking over the cash. At one point these girls asked 'how much?'' the guy with the flag told them to get in cause they were blocking traffic, which they were not. It used to feel a lot bigger, where the soundboard is on the floor now, it was never there before the name change so it was way more open and felt more spacious.

10-12-2007, 11:51 PM
Oh yeah, I saw Rilo Kiley on Tuesday night. Got to the show at 7:30 because I'm stupid and think everybody else who attends concerts tries to get there before the first band is due to start (in this instance, at 8:00) just like me. So I was bored for the first half hour I was there and had forgotten to pull out some cash. There was no re-entry nor an ATM, and the concession stand didn't take credit cards, so all I had to buy a beer with was $3. My options: Nimbus or Red Stripe. Being that I was dissatisfied with the Nimbus I had purchased a couple weeks earlier, I went with the Red Stripe. When the cashier rang it up, though, he said it was $4. I was like, "It says $3 right there." So he looked and observed that on the sign, it was indeed listed as $3, but before he could say anything, this stupid fucking cunt at the next register had to chime in with, "It's $4." She then cited the "menu" on her side of the counter as indicating that the beer I ordered was $4. Thing was, there was no listing of Red Stripe on her menu, though she was insistent that I had to pay $4. The cashier I had was cool, though, and sold it to me for $3. I don't know what that bitch's problem was but I had a mind to chuck my Red Stripe at her head and give her a viable reason to be in such a rotten mood.

Anyway, shortly thereafter Grand Ole Party started. They're a three-piece, with a female drummer who also doubles as their vocalist. They sounded good, if reminiscent of lots of other bands (Franz Ferdinand was the first to come to mind). The singer/drummer's voice was nice and raspy but it also reminded me of someone else I couldn't quite put my finger on. (Maybe Ani DiFranco? I dunno, I don't listen to a lot of lesbian music.)
Next up was the Bird and the Bee, whom apparently a lot of people I know are aware of and buzzing about, but it wasn't till I heard about them opening for Rilo Kiley that I knew anything about them. I ran into the owner and manager of Plush as I was waiting for them to start and they both exclaimed about how great the Bird and the Bee were at South by Southwest. The owner offered to buy me a beer, so I got another Red Stripe, and a few minutes after she returned with it, their set started. The singer commands the stage really well and has an interesting voice. It was just her and her cousin up there -- he played guitar and something else that I'd know the name of if I was a musician -- and the song that caught me the most had the lyrics "I try, I try, I try, I try / I'm a broken heart, I'm a broken heart." (While her lyrics weren't terrific, the way she sang them was a saving grace. She deployed bubbles from a bubble machine during this song.)
Finally, after an interminably long set-up after B&B, Rilo Kiley came out. Jenny Lewis was wearing a loose-fitting sparkling blouse that didn't really serve justice to her wonderful bust. I don't know if it was the make-up or lighting but she looked really old, like she was Neko Case's age. (No offense to Ms. Case, just illustrating how much older Jenny looked.) And when she moved around the stage, it was plainly evident that she has no ass. Well, it's there, but there's just no curvaceousness to it. There's a flat piece of flesh connecting her back to her legs and I was disappointed to discover that.
But those observations were made within the first song the band performed. After that, their playing was superb and the crowd was putty in their hands and I was enjoying the music too much to think about too much more than how glad I was that I didn't leave after the bar incident. I only have Under the Blacklight so I wasn't familiar with the songs they played off their previous releases, but they were all enjoyable and made me eager to seek out those other CDs. I think "Dreamworld" is their best song, and one of the best released this year, and their little jam session (of sorts) at the end of it just took it up another notch. "The Moneymaker" and "Breakin' Up" were also terrific, but "Silver Lining" was the one that really took my breath away, the combination of lyrics and the way Jenny Lewis emotes while singing them. They played for a solid hour and a half (maybe 80 minutes all told) and I can see them being ready for the main stage next year.

I don't know what that bitch's problem was but I had a mind to chuck my Red Stripe at her head and give her a viable reason to be in such a rotten mood.

.

That's a lot of typing over a dollar... But I do believe in the principle of it all, that would definitely piss me off..

Jebus. You'd think living in Florida we'd get alot of good people coming down here for shows. But it's pretty much hit-and-miss.
But alas, I have to travel to see people I wanna see.
But it's not all that bad.
I saw Spacemen this month, and am gonna see MSTRKRFT, Stanton Warriors, and The Toxic Avenger this month too in Orlando.

Hopefully Justice will come to the 2008 Ultra Festival in Miami in March, as I dont have enough to see them in say..Chicago.
And while I saw Bjork in Detroit, I wouldnt mind seeing her again...

Thanks, and if you think that was a lot of typing for a post on this message board, then imagine how long it must've seemed to captncrzy when I sent her a text message detailing the incident afterwards! It wasn't the dollar that bothered me but the ineptitude on their parts -- how difficult is it to put the correct price next to an item you're selling? -- and the attitude I received when I called them on their error. And if there had been more going on at the time to draw my attention, it wouldn't have made such an indelible mark on my memory.

It was lame, he played every song from his new album, which I haven't heard and judging from the crowd was not alone. Then he played like 3 or 4 from mid-solo career Catholics albums I think. Like Dog In the Sand. You know, the shit nobody cares about. I left before he even broke for an encore.

the Fiery Furnaces are not boring. Well maybe. You know that at Coachella a couple years ago they played one long continuous set blending songs and being crazy nuts? Everything was transformed, the melodies and such were all shifted and abnormal. Also they had a kickass drummer.

My friends saw them not long after but with a different drummer and reported that it wasn't near as awesome.

Don't you love Widow City? Am I thinking of another person who loves Widow City? That may be the case.

Also beers are for drinking, silly.

You get a 3 hour performance out of that easily, maybe more, whats your complaint? I paid like $60 to see them in April. and thats why you go to a ticket outlet and save like $5 on service fees, but you seem to be too lazy to do that.

My last four shows cost $50 total.

And the $22 I spent for that Aesop Rock show as one of those four is the third most I've spent on a show this year, only behind Coachella and Daft Punk.

$50+ is a lot for one show.

oh please. if the convenience charge is $10 per ticket and I bought two tickets online it'd be $123.50. if I bought them at an outlet it'd be $120. it's worth $3.50 if I don't have to go out of my way.

besides I wasn't complaining about service charges specifically, I was complaining about the overall cost.

Because thats how it is. They played in Seattle or Vancouver a few years ago though, 2005 was a decent tour, 2003 had a tour too when all of De Loused was played front to back. I saw them as support on some tours thats why you probably never gt a headline date up there. The random opening time was for Pixies, 3 songs in 50 minuutes. Also on the A Perfect circle tour in 2004, lots of fun.
