The Cab Calloway Orchestra (with C. Calloway Brooks, Grandson)
Lyric Theatre, 3/27

This was very good. I was impressed. I was sort of worried that he was just going to be like an impersonator who happened to also be a relative, but he really made it his own.

They did "How Big Can You Get" and dedicated it to Alberto Gonzales. Heh.

He was also very friendly, but he had a total limp fish handshake.

I was virtually the only one there who wasn't old enough to be able to catch this the first time around. I think there was one other college-age person, and a few little kids. I think the reason it was so early is that almost none of the people who were there are allowed to drive at night.

Man don't say that. I really wish I was going to the Jason Anderson show at the Trunk Space tonight because Bikini is right there. And there's breaks and I might get bored of Mr Anderson. I have only been a few times but I rather like the Bikini Lounge.

But I need to stay home and rest. Dammit.

I missed quite a bit of work last week being sick and was sick all weekend (and didn't go see Adrian Orange on Sunday night) and am still slow at work and still coughing and phlegmy some. I should be asleep before you even start.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if we've been at the same shows various times. I'm John.

My actual upcoming that I hope to make it to right now is

Mar 30 - Ambulette @ Modified
Apr 11 - the Shins, Viva Voce @ Celeb
Apr 16 - Ponys, Deerhunter, Asleep in the Sea (my last chance to see them)
Apr 18 - Lymbic System, Back Ted-N-Ted, Colorstore @ Modified
Apr 27-29 - Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival @ Empire Polo Grounds
May 02 - Melissa Ferrick, Erin McKeown @ the Brickhouse
May 02 - Anathallo @ Modified
May 04 - Silversun Pickups, Elf Power @ the Clubhouse
May 05 - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the Fratelis @ Marquee

With maybes on the Clientele, Laura Viers/Young Galaxy, Brother Ali/Psalm One and Voxtrot and Pretty Girls Make Graves (?)

Things look a little light for the upcoming month. Which I guess is alright as a leadup to Coachella, monetarily.

The ? next to them was 'cause I thought they broke up and were done not broke up and were doing tour. I love them and I love their final album and have generally enjoyed them live in the past. So yeah, I will def plan on going.

Rush is one of my favorite bands, hence the "2112" after my name. I have seen them four times and they never have had an opening band. They always play for at least 2.5 hours and they play a variety of songs from all their albums. Also they always switch the set list up from show to show. btw kreutz is the first part of my last name, kreutzer, my first name is Adam.

Ahh, yes. Adam. That's right.

Candlebox was the opening band one time I saw Rush; I forget who opened the other time. Also I was joking, really. I have no need to see them again but that doesn't mean that you should stay away. Plus I would probably enjoy it quite a bit more than I'd figure.

Last time Rush came to Winnipeg, someone hucked a bottle at Geddy Lee and they haven't been back since. They were rumoured to be coming here this tour, but apparently not. I've never been a Rush fan, but I wanted to go so I could huck a bottle on stage and yell "I thought we told you last time, dont come back!!"

I don't have any pictures or anything, but I give Of Montreal an A for theatrics and a C+ for how they sounded. I had a feeling a lot of their stuff would be difficult to pull of live, and I guess it was. Some parts of their songs were practically inaudible in the mix, which may have been their fault or it may have been Studio A's fault, I have no idea. It was one of those deals where if you didn't already know what the song was supposed to sound like, it probably wouldn't have sounded so hot at times. At other times, though, they sounded pretty fine. It was hit or miss. Also, they didn't play "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal"...I know it's 12 minutes long, but it kind of seems like a no-brainer to come out and play that during the encore.

I won't be seeing them again at Coachella, but I wouldn't tell fans of the band not to see them. All in all, it was a good time.

I should also mention that my experience may have been soured a little bit by the idiot in front of me, whose dancing consisted of jumping wildly up and down while flailing his arms and throwing his hair all over the place...in a manner that seemed calculated to both obscure my view to the maximum possible degree and to inflict as much bodily damage as he could get away with, short of having me press charges for assualt and/or aggravated battery. I really think clubs need to employ Dance Police Squads who, upon seeing someone dancing like a douchebag, will come bursting out onto the floor and will violently tackle said douchebag on the spot. I'm all for people going nuts, but only if there's enough space. Please, people, dance responsibly. And never, under any circumstances, should you dance and drive.

Just got back from TV on the Radio.
Caught a few songs by the Noisettes. They were fun and noisy. Tons of energy onstage. The show was at the Henry Fonda, a venue that I hate. The place attracts the "I'm here to drink, be an asshole and brag about what an awesome Hollywood socialite I am" crowd. They were there in full force tonight. There was one woman who wouldn't shut up about how she is a gypsy and also her fantastic digiridoo prowess. I digress. TV on the Radio were good, but I've seen them play better. They had tons of energy, but Tunde's voice wasn't as strong as I've heard it. They are getting consistently better at building their songs to a climax live. The drum circle deal was a bit cheesy, but when they did it on Let the Devil In, it sounded really cool. I'm hoping tomorrow will be better, because when they're really on, these guys can bring it like few others.

May 12-Mesa Amphitheatre got the tickets a couple days ago.
It should be killer, Modest Mouse, Love As Laughter, and Man Man.

Oooh, I did not hear that. Very interesting. That might push me into seeing them again. I mean, I love the Mouse but I was planning on skipping this one just cause of all the shows in May. And I don't like Love as Laughter.

I guess it depends on if I go to Tucson next weekend to see Man Man. And if I do, how it goes.

Last night I did go see Ambulette. I've been sick so I've not been doing much so I was tired. But it started early and there were only three bands. And I still had plenty of time to go to El Norteno beforehand for some Gorditas. Next time I need to take a picture of the food. Oh man you guys probably have no idea. So fucking good.

Anyway. Let's see. Each band was a four piece with two guitarists, a drummer and a bassits though for the outer two there was some switching around.

Locals Technicolor Yawn opened. I would not have chosen "Yawn" for my band name; leaves such a big opening. Plus they were boring. Except for the song where the lead singer stopped playing guitar badly and went to the drumkit instead. And he played better/more interestingly than the standard drummer who switched to a keyboard. And the lead guitarist played his best, most adventurous guitar of the night and sang/shouted in little bursts. There were maybe two other songs (of 7 or so total) that I cared for; both tended towards their more aggressive/adventurous side but neither were all that much of either.

The New Trust were next. They're from somewhere North of the Bay Area. Josh Staples who was in the Velvet Teen is this band's lead singer/bassist. He is a fine, kinda talky singer. The songs were general up-tempo indie rock, well structured and energetic. I liked them. If I had cash I would've bought their album.

Ambulette was next. They last played here just after Coachella last year, opening for Ranier Maria. The turnout last night ended up being decent, maybe 100 people.

And, umm, they were phenomenal. I like opening bands. Many times I want to see opening bands more than headliners. Then there are times I mostly just want to go to a show and aren't hugely familiar with anyone playing. So, yeah, I didn't expect to like Ambulette so much more than the other two.

Every band member shocked me with how good they sounded. I particularly loved Matt Clark's lead guitar - full and washy, slowburning and beautiful.

OK, fine, I been trying but I have no idea how to describe how great this short set (~35 minutes) was. They closed with their version of "If You Go Away" which frankly sounded a little out of place. The other songs had more movement and were built better, in my opinion.

Anyway they were awesome. Go see them. Twice. Pics later.

Lily Allen is playing in May in Baltimore, and The National are playing in June in Philly. I hope to make both of those.

John has me wanting gorditas now. Not sure what I can manage in Balto, but I may have to settle for a cheesesteak in Philly.

This thread rules.

Even though it's not upcoming I have to mention seeing The Coup/Lyrics Born on Monday night. I've never seen either before and both met my expectations. The Coup had a tight band that hit every note and was allowed to show off, so you got the perfect blend of 70s soul, hip hop and a political demonstration. He even let Silk-E sing "BabyLet'sHaveaBabyBeforeBushDoSomethin'Crazy."

Lyrics Born was like seeing a subpar jamband with an MC.

Ok, for my upcoming shows:

Definitely going to:
The Decemberists - Fillmore April 22
Nas or Andrew Bird (haven't decided which) - April 25
Coachella
Lily Allen - Ogden May 21
The Hold Steady - Ogden May 22
Global Dance Fest w/ Tiesto - Red Rocks July 21
Daft Punk - Red Rocks July 31
Underworld - Red Rocks September 11

I think I'm going to TV on the Radio tonight. Tessa told me that Matthew Fox got put on the guest list. If I see him, I'm totally going to embarrass myself. Maybe if I take the "I loved you in Party of Five," road, he'll be surprised and actually sign something for me. We'll see.

And Tessa told me they played Dry, Drunk Emperor last night - which is my favorite song. I doubt they'll play it two nights running - but, we'll see.

Just got tix for Dinosaur Jr. Another band I wanted to see but never could back in the day.

So now I'm on schedule for : The Frames / Amiina / Coachella / Dinosaur Jr. / Sasquatch / Daft Punk.

An eclectic mix. :) Annoyed at myself for missing tix for Silversun Pickups here in OR.

I'm no longer going to the 4/8 Decemberists show (selling my tix). I'm flying to CA and seeing Muse in their 4/9 and 4/10 shows instead.

It's final, am not going to Sasquatch. I found cheap flight to SEA and tickets are still available but I thought overall lineup is not compelling enough for me to go there. Oh well, if they'll add Muse later (< not happening since they will be playing in some Europe festival at the same time).
Yo La Tengo - Completed
The Thermals - Completed
Cold War Kids, Tokyo Police Club - Completed
Ultra Music Festival [The Cure (amazing!), Kruder & Dorfmeister (OMG < add these old dudes in Coachella), Brazilian Girls (cool entertaining set but no longer do or die must-see 4 me in Coachella, however, I will see them barring any conflict), Digitalism (refreshingly cool and should be interesting and I'll definitely check their Coachella set), Deep Dish (my feet still in pain 4 dancing all day last week), Sander Kleinenberg (add him too!), Tiesto (meh - not wasting my time 4 him in Coachella), Tommy Sunshine (okay meh), Junkie XL (meh), Shiny Toy Gun (SUCKED)] - Completed

? Of Montreal 4/1 (maybe not - tix sold out, already saw them anyway - they are just too flamboyant and their theatrics can be annoying however, fans non-stop dancing during their set is fan)
? The Killers 4/7
Muse 4/9, 4/10 and 4/15 @ Edgefest 16 (with The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, Placebo)
Coachella
Arctic Monkeys 5/20
Bonnaroo
Morrissey 7/17
Lollapalooza

2.The Wrong Way
3.Dreams
4.Province
5.Wolf Like Me
6.I Was a Lover

TV On The Radio was one of my most anticipated acts last year but their show was underwhelming @ Coachella '06. I really like their recorded sound but I thought they were pretty boring live. Here we go again last year, everyone was creaming on their pants on their not so spectacular 2006 album but just like the Bloc Party, I'll just listen or use their music as background while am surfing on internet or reading magazines.

I'm more annoyed than impressed of their theatrics though (some might find it funny but arrrgh, the cheesy and filthy costumes, that creepy annoying dude with sword and balloons ... ugh!). It's nice to see that their diehard fans having great time dancing during their show but they did'nt sound good and I've been thinking now, they were not really that good when I saw them for the first time last year (much less theatrics vs. last Sunday's show).

Dave,

WOW, that's awesome (fucking Mew with fucking Oh No! Oh My! @ The Fillmore)! I'm jealous. I'm going to miss that by few hours. I'm arriving 4/7 in SF with following not so good choices: a. expensive The Killers scalper tix @ Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (been to this venue 2 years ago and I will be attending Muse 4/9 gig there) b. Hellogoodbye (who? They sound good though) show @ The Warfield or c. The Frames @ The Fillmore (would love to see this venue).

So The Killers or Hellogoodbye or The Frames? or any other choices in SF for nights of 4/7 and 4/8?

I just got back from Nurse With Wound/Man Man
The traffic on Sunset was unusually horrendous, so I got to Amoeba a tad late. Nurse with Wound had already started, and they were in the midst of what I assume was their one song. They were playing bowed string instruments when I got there, and a lady was ranting free form poetry. They dscended into a drone, which sounded really eerie, and held that for a few minutes before escalating into a rampant noise blast. They neded with this. i would have liked to have heard the whole performance so as to put the ending in context, but what i heard was great.

I then drifted back to the Roxy. The Ventriloquists were on when I arrived. They were playing some soulful stuff, and it was pretty cool. The end of the the last song was great; the second singer belted it out like a crazed Marvin Gaye. Simon Dawes was pretty boring; I liked the first song, but most of the rest of it sounded fairly similar, in a bad way. Man Man had been insanely hyped for me. Many people had told me that they were the best live show they've ever seen. When they came on, my anticipation was high. I was in the back of the venue, so I couldn't see much, but they sounded fantastic. The first two songs, the audience was fairly tepid, but the third song drew people in. A ponytailed rapscallion started bouncing forward, and caught me in his tow. Somehow, I wound up in the midst of a suddenly insane crowd. The energy was contagious, and I started to sing along and dance wildly. This energized the band, and the whole show became an insane ball of energy. I don't know their music very well, but I was blown away by their live show. Anyone who can should check these guys out. Absolutely amazing.

i would have had more fun at the thermals last night if i wasnt stuck in the back room downstairs at the echo. (is it called the ex plex?) as you can tell, it was my first time downstairs there and i couldnt hear clearly because the partial walls that separate the two rooms end up blocking the sound for the people in the back room. the music ends up sounding muffled while surrounding conversations are amplified.

anybody out there know when they started? the show ended before 11. is it because the thermals only have like an hour and a half worth of material, or was there some dance dance revolution again? (last time db played there the echo made them start at 8 and finish early for it)

Here's some cheapo camera phone pics of The Frames at Belly Up last night. I fucking love that venue. It's a straight up bar with a nightlife crowd who are just there to drink. I got there like 10 minutes before The Frames went on and got to the front row easily. Glen wasn't as talkative or charming or funny last night so it was kinda weird. They just kinda played their songs and left. It was still fucking fantastic, and by the end of the night, they shut up all the talkers in the back and everyone was eagerly watching them bring it down.

I'm here @ a library in SF Civic Center. Sorry Tessa, I went to The Killers show last night. One of my friends' friend decided not to go to that show so she brought me as her temp date :D instead to the show. Mosh Pit GA - I have an idea now what time I should camp so that I will be in front row for Muse show tomorrow.

It's all right - Brandon's voice live is not mind blowing - just fine. But he is all over the stage - good showmanship (their show is kinda EMOish). I fucking hate the kids fans of The Killers who were jumping up and down in front and besides me all the time every time they are singing fast tempo songs.

The bands who opened for them both sucked (Solarcae? WHO? and Howling Bells).

I went to a music paradise called Amoeba earlier - I spent at least 3 hours in that store. Bought 4 CDs - no vinyls that I like. I have to go there's 15 minutes limit ... ;)

Its usually always entirely GA for shows at the Bill Graham, and yeah you got jacked on openers for them. They have Hot Hot Heat opening on the second part of their tour. Have fun at Muse!

The Killers has cheesy stage props (just okay lights etc.) - the show started with brief grainy Sam's Town video shown in a thin table cloth/linen or is that a big mosquito net they put in front othe stage.

The Books are a two-member New York band that do interesting things with samples in a sort of mellow, acoustic, folksy way. Recently they've been experimenting with adding moving image to their work. They came out and did a show at the Getty last year which was great. I think they're currently affiliated with MASS MoCA up in North Adams, Massachusetts. (Maybe an artists-in-residency gig?)

Sea Wolf, Earlimart and the Watson Twins are all local indie rock bands. All should have myspace pages. The Watson Twins are probably best know for their work with Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley fame. But all three are good, and worth checking out if you want to see what's going on in the Los Angeles music scene.

I'm gonna see Sunset Rubdown in Phoenix on Wednesday the 25th. I don't need to tell you who they are cause you told me in the first place. They are not playing with Xiu Xiu for my show. I am happy about this.

If I were coming from LA and I couldn't get into the Glass House for one of the greatest bands of all time I would seriously consider going to that show at the Ex Plex. I mean I may end up just heading to my camp site anyway but I'd be upset about missing that. I don't know Sea Wolf but Earlimart is a great, great band and very strong live (also I've seen them cover Distance = Rate x Time and State Trooper [by Pixies and the Boss]) and I rather like the album I've heard from the Watson Twins and they sound good backing Jenny and yeah.

I just got back from Sonic Boom. I didn't know what to expect whatsoever; this was listed as both an EAR and a Sonic Boom show. It was at Safari Sam's, which was a fairly cool venue. It's got a good bar, and the setup is cool, but the sound system isn't great. The first opener, Eskimo Hunter, played to the softer side of Shoegaze, and they were really good. Most of the audience came to see them, and they played up to that. I'll see them again if I hear about it. Then came LSD and the Search for God, who have a horrible name. They sounded like My Bloody Valentine. Like, almost exactly the same as MBV. Their songs were good tho, so I enjoyed their set. Sonic Boom was an hour later than he was scheduled to be. He started with what i think was a Suicide song, and the vocals were weirdly mixed. They put way too much echo on, and they were bass heavy, and he was obviously frustrated with the sound. The third song was Hall of Mirrors by Kraftwerk, and it was pretty cool. I know that the next song was either a Spectrum or Spacemen 3 song, and the song after that sounded like late period Spectrum. The final track was Ecstasy Symphony, and he stretched it to over 20 minutes of sheer awesomeness. He finally got over the tech problems and turned it into a true symphony of sound. Overall, it was a cool and very unique show, and this review is horridly written. For that I apologize.

They came out and did a show at the Getty last year which was great.Sweet, I was there too. It was the absolute perfect venue for them, although Knitting Factory was pretty nice, too.

If I wasn't at Coachella I'd go to Apostle of Hustle for sure. <3 me some almost Broken Social Scene.

bitches. have any of you seen Peter Bjorn and John? Do they rule? I kind of want to go to their show because I really want to see Fujiya and Miyagi but I'm only willing to pay $20+ if they're good.

I just got back from Lightning Bolt
They played at 1269 E. 6th Street, which is a warehouse in downtown LA. It was a "secret" show, but the place was absolutely packed. Before the bands started playing, they screened Vanishing Point, which was fun to watch after having seen Grindhouse. The first band, who's name I never caught, was pretty bad. Faceless hardcore punk with no real passion. At least the lead singer was energetic, but he was also a dick (he kicked a guy in the chest just because!) The next band, Silver Daggers, was more interesting. They sailed the seas of No Wave, veering between The Contortionists' skronk and Teenage Jesus' blasts of anger. Their drummer was fantastic, and their lead singer was absolutely nuts. After they finished, Brian Chippendale from Lightning Bolt came out of the crowd and said "Hey, what band were you guys? You were really good! By the way, who's playing next?" to which they replied, "We're Silver Daggers, and you're up next." As Lightning Bolt set up, the crowd surged onto the "stage" (really a half pipe) and encircled their gear. I was directly in front of the bass drum. They soundchecked and then drilled their amps and the drum kit onto the stage. This made sense as soon as they started to play. The crowd went completely nuts, and people were constantly forced into the band as they played. It didn't phase the guys at all, as they kept on playing without missing a beat or note. They weren't as loud as I expected; my ears are ringing, but i didn't feel sick or lose an eardrum. They were, however, extremely tight and virtuosic. That guy can play a bass like nobody's business, and the drumming is out of this world. Despite the fact that the crowd was so insane that I had to move back after three songs, it was an amazing show. They closed with Dracula Mountain, which is my favorite LB song, and they absolutely killed it. They're playing tomorrow (Thursday) at the Smell. If you're in LA, go see it. You won't regret it one bit.

Side Note: They pumped so much noise out that whenever Brian would sing, the lights in the building visibly dimmed. That was awesome

The Shins were excellent. They played for an hour. Then they paused for five minutes then they came out and played "Breathe" and then several other songs and then a song by the Modern Lovers and then I think one more and then they stopped. It was a 40 minute encore.

Viva Voce were good opening. Only a duo this time, with the bass and some other sounds on a backing track. They did not play "We Do Not Fuck Around." I was surprised.

Also during the set break I realized that Anita (from Viva Voce) could come out and sing on "Phantom Limb" like on the album recording. She did. And also for "New Slang" and one other, maybe "Turn On Me." The guy from Viva Voce (I forget his name) came out and played cowbell on the Modern Lovers cover.

The show sold out last night. The crowd was good if a little talky.

The stage rotating thing was weird. It rotated slowly. Both bands found it hilarious. James tried to charge Anita carnival tickets to come on stage.

I am listening to VIva Voce on CD for the first time right now. After being pleasantly surprised by them at the Shins show, I have to say the CD holds up very well.

oooh - i saw the decemberists about two weeks ago with my brightest diamond - great show - great silkscreen poster on sale too, which is now framed on my wall.

i've seen a bunch of really good stuff lately, which is shocking, considering i work till all hours of the night. Last week i saw the annuals and the walkmen (the kaisers chiefs blew and were the headliner), placebo, and the cold war kids with tokyo police club and the delta spirit (this last concert was the best, and i've posted the video on youtube - i try to put all the vids up on youtube but the size restrictions are annoying).

the week before i saw bloc party with albert hammond, jr and the decemberists with my brightest diamond. All of them were fantastic, highly recommended!

but of course, the best recent show was back in january - arcade fire, in the ukrainian federation, in montreal where i literally ran into Win Butler (as in, violent, "watch where you're going asshole" ran into), but he was completely cool and took me and my friend down into the basement of the church so we could stand right next to him and the band during their acoustic set.

upcoming im going to see sunset rubdown, the arcade fire 2x, dave matthews and tim reynolds and deerhunter.

07-27 Tokyo Police Club- Anderson's Fifth Estate, but I don't know when tickets go on sale or if it's 18+.

And the Shins were awsome on wednesday.

I saw the Shins in san diego on tuesday and it was amazing. I saw them at Rimac in december but the sound was really crappy so I am glad i saw them again. I really wish I bought the viva voce cd.

How are the Decemberists live? I can't wait to see them at coachella. Sunset sidestage perhaps?

Seen them twice this year, and both times they were superb. I was worried about seeing them after a lot of people on this board mentioned how bad they were live.

Hope the same can be said for Band Of Horses. (also given a big thumbs down live on here).
