I don't think they're boring. I like them because they are electro but they still call to mind Prince and the Rolling Stones and other soulful sounds. If I like them, you can find a way to like them, I just know it. You're a thousand times more jovial than me.

I am just listening to the Oracular Spectacular now for the first time. I don't think I love it as much as Yeasayer for whatever it's worth.
Also I would really, really like to go to the New Pornos with Okkervil River opening. That would be a good show.

Jared, if you go to that show tonight and come back saying Yeasayer was better than MGMT it will prove that you are a fucking idiot about ALL MATTERS OF TASTE.
Bmack, I'm surprised and appalled. Yeasayer was completely unremarkable in every way. MGMT fucking owned that room. It was a brilliant show, they're going to be one of the best performances of Coachella this year. I'm calling them for this year's Hot Chip in 07-level breakout show, just not as dancey.

I saw Ryan Adams at Royce Hall last night, after Bryan's glowing review. First off, I love that venue. The sound is impeccable. I strongly recommend seeing anyone you enjoy who plays there. If you can get tickets at the door, it is especially helpful (I paid $37.50 or so, rather than $50 with all the Ticketmaster service charges.)
I had reservations about seeing Ryan Adams live (his reputation for being hit or miss and the price were the big issues). Bryan's description of the show quelled any fears about that, so I went. Basically, the show was two sets, with lots of talking and joking in between songs. Normally this would have pissed me off, but for some reason it worked...it added to the ramshackle charm of the show, and provided a contrast of sorts between the tunes, which sounded impeccable.
The Cardinals really add a new dimension to Ryan Adams' sound. They are really cohesive, at times reminiscent of the Allman Brothers (although a lot of this was the guitar harmonies on "Cold Roses"). But they are a rock solid foundation for the tunes, while at the same time allowing room for improvisation. This is where seeing Ryan Adams live is different from the records. When he extends tunes past their logical conclusions on the albums, it is obnoxious and takes away from otherwise solid songwriting. Live, it works extremely well. Also, the show kind of plays like the Ryan Adams album you wish he would make...no duds or too long moments. Everything worked, everything sounded great.
Some highlights included:
-An extended version of "I See Monsters" from Love is Hell. It recalled "Champagne Supernova" at the end...heavy riffage moving around the bass note. Really good.
-"Cold Roses". Band sounded fantastic. Guitar harmonies were impeccable.
-"Easy Plateau". This was the set closer, and it turned into a big psychedelic excursion.
I was really lazy about the setlist, so if you care you can probably find it online. I cannot stress enough how great the band sounded. Really tight, impeccable vocal harmonies, good musicianship on the jams. The Cardinals kind of rein in Ryan Adams, while at the same time exploring the songs. This is a good thing. Ryan Adams is extremely talented, and a fucking great songwriter, but he is his own worst enemy musically. The Cardinals keep him in check almost.
Also, I know Ryan Adams has the reputation for being a prick, and it is probably deserved, but he was very likable last night, talking about things in between songs. There was a whole aside about Slash coming onstage to solo and another story about trying to get with this girl by purchasing a White Lion record...all of this was funny and likable. Although he was probably just fucked up.
Anyway, great band, great songs. Countryfied vibe, but kind of psychedelic too. Think Flying Burrito Brothers in that sense. But they could also rock out. Really tight musicianship. Allman Brothers meets Flying Burrito Bros meets Oasis meets The Cure. Vibewise. I dug it.
Show gets a B. I wanted to hear more tunes and less talking, as humorous as the talking was. But the songs themselves were great.

Saw Autolux/HEALTH tonight. HEALTH were obnoxious until they hit these grooves, where they had polyrhythms going with bursts of noise. When these happened I could feel it, but otherwise they sounded like a bunch of lame art kids playing noise with a brittle guitar tone that really bothers me. I would see them again, and I will check out their record.
Autolux were really fucking loud and thick and heavy. Like My Bloody Valentine, but not as pretty or lush. But that type of thickness and drone. I was really feeling it (literally and metaphorically). They sounded great. The chick playing drums is awesome. The other guys just kind of did their thing. Do not miss them at Coachella. Fantastic.

If the Pats get ahead of the Giants, I might try to make the Entrance show at McCabe's Guitar Shop.
Also I'm pretty sure I'm seeing R.E.M. in San Francisco, depending on what my friends think of doing that instead of the Bowl.

MBM is must see at all costs.
It will be an audio visual feast.
On their last tour they had Ben Stokes on video mixer. They had accompanying original video for every single sample in all of the MBM tunes.
This will be one of the best shows you will ever see.

I went and saw Yeasayer and MGMT last night. Both bands put on a really good show. Yeasayer only played like 5 songs, and two of them were new and were semi-long. MGMT has improved since the last time I saw them. It was one of the guys birthday and the whole crowd (there was only like 50 people there) sang happy birthday to him and then they proceeded to cover "Good Times Bad Times" after which they all yelled "SNOWBALL FIGHT" and they ran off stage, everyone followed, and there was a giant snowball fight between the band and the crowd. Everyone came back in and they played on more song and dragged it out like 10 minutes reading excerpts from some book. I don't have any pics of Yeasayer because I was sort of in the back during their set and the stage is not that high. I do however have a few pics of MGMT (post snowball fight) that I will post when I get home. All in all it was a fun show.

Vampire Weekend was aiiight, nothing too special, good vocals, decent energy during the latter half of the set. I dont know what they will do with a full set at The El Rey though, cause it might get pretty repetitive.
Not only that but their album is just 34 minutes long, plus a few stray B-sides. I would imagine they'll have to have a good amount of new material to fill out a headlining set. I would almost say 30 minutes at Amoeba is the perfect way to see them right now (or supporting the Shins). I should also mention that right next to me the weirdest, saddest thing was playing out, as these two dudes who looked about 17 tried to talk up a married woman who was about 25 (and very beautiful). They were so desperate. And this woman must have been incredibly naive not to be creeped out or think her husband (apparently elsewhere in the store later--why didn't she go join him?) would give a fuck about her conversation with some horny boys. *shrug*

love the walkmen but never seen them live. seems like they should be good band live especially if they play The Rat or Little House of Savages.
if you're a casual fan who's hoping to hear "The Rat" or "We've Been Had," you're probably out of luck. The purpose of this current tour is to debut new material and that is what the set will be comprised heavily of. With that said, the new songs are ace and the band is tight live!
From recent experiences, the setlist will probably comprise of 7+/- new songs and these tracks for sure: "Thinking of a Dream I Had" "138th St" "No Christmas While I'm Talking" "All Hands And The Cook" "Wake Up"
The following songs are not permanent fixtures but have appeared on recent setlists: "Good For You's Good For Me" "Little House of Savages" "What's In It For Me" "Louisiana" "What Happened to You?" "Another One Goes By" "Bows + Arrows"
Hope this helps in your decision making!:)

Just got back from Holy Fuck/Super Furry Animals. Holy Fuck were pretty damn amazing. Lots of people around me were moving but there were some songs that I thought, "Man, the place should be going NUTS right about now." But it wasn't. Eh, they'll be lots of fun at Coachella. I even bought their CD.
SFA, meanwhile, were also good, especially the 1st and 4th songs, the names of which I don't know since this was my first time hearing anything by them. I started getting bored and sleepy, though, so I took off half an hour into their set. I hate how my attention span just plummets when I don't recognize any of the songs being played, although if the songs were completely awesome (as was the case during some of Holy Fuck's set), I wouldn't care that I was listening to them for the first time. Thus, SFA is equally guilty for me leaving their set early.
EDIT: Just realized that after a year on this board, I'm finally "old school."

What if they conflict there also? Oh!
No one conflicts with the headliners at Sasqutch. And for the most part, there is only a partial conflict with the main sub-headliner band at Sasquatch.
Therefor, REM and the Breeder will not conflict. This makes things a lot easier for me. I have this feeling The Breeders and Battles will be conflicting at Coachella this year...
suprefan
02-06-2008, 09:49 PM
Probably not. Breeders will be playing at night on Outdoor I imagine. I think Battles will go late afternoon possible post sunset slot. I see how you are looking at it based on line position, but The Breeders are more suited to play on that stage at a later timeslot. Battles, not so much.
rage patton
02-06-2008, 10:01 PM
I could see a Battles night set in the Mojave. Either that or a late afternoon set at the outdoor theatre. In my dreams, Battles will play the gobi at 4pm. But thats in my dreams...
suprefan
02-06-2008, 10:14 PM
they could close Gobi and that would be cool then there are no conflicts against the Breeders cause somebody else will close Outdoor. And a nice solution to not seeing JJ.
