I listened to Mogwai Fears Satan and it definately did not rock hard. It was boring and it sounded drawn out and strained. I will watch the rest of the youtube videos when I get back home today. But if they all sound like Mogwai Fears Satan, I am going to be incredibly let down.
Wait... Have you ever seen Mogwai live before?

I am going to be honest. I am not a tremendously huge fan of their albums. I mean, I love the songs on the albums. But it is all a let down until you hear the songs live and they assault you, batter you, and get away with it because that is acceptable behavior for a band that awesome.

at a show they did in Las Vegas...I actually sat on the stage while they played....my ears rang for days afterwards...but it was worth it...Mars Volta has got nothing on them....just let them play My Father My King and it is game over....

Indeed, they blew me away live. I do enjoy their albums as well, but they are unreal live.

When I saw TMV open for APC, I wanted to borrow my friend's knitting needles and jam them into my ears.
I still can't believe they let her bring those inside.
Your friend was knitting at a concert? THAT is pretentious.

When I saw them in SF a few weeks after Coachella in 06, they played Hunted By A Freak straight into Mogwai Fear Satan straight into Glasgow Mega-Snake. That little sequence was ridiculous. They also opened with Christmas Steps, and closed with We're No Here, followed by something in the neighborhood of 15 minutes of noise. I have a bootleg of the show on my hard drive, the setlist was awesome. I want to see them live again very much. And I saw A Place To Bury Strangers on Friday night, and Mogwai and Dinosaur Jr. are both louder than them.

I actually have a list now, so I'm going to post it:
- Infected Mushroom April 3rd at Axis/Radius in Scottsdale, AZ
- Coachella April 25th to 27th Indio, CA
- All Points West Festival August 8th and 9th Liberty State Park, New Jersey or whatever
I haven't gone to a live show since Bjork in Vegas back in December I just realized.

Amy I'm jealous of your list, I'm glad you get to see RH back2back tho. If you dont mind me asking, whats the estimated cost of that trip flight, hotel, tix (sold out, I know) etc? Just wondering if I can pull off some sort of miracle with my tax return.
Did you see Bjork @ The Pearl? How amazing is that venue?
I went to the Tool shows the previous nights and was dying to stay, but like it always does Vegas took all my funds faster than expected.

I haven't bought my plane tickets yet (need to get on that I guess), the (2)tickets were $410 with the WASTE presale for Friday and Saturday, and we're staying with a friend for free (yay NY friend!). I'm estimating over $600 for 2 plane tickets--I've only looked a bit last week but didn't buy anything. I hear hotels in NJ are around $150-ish, and hotels in NY are over $300 a night.
Yes, I saw Bjork at The Pearl, and it was an amazing experience. Expensive, but so worth it. I'm not really into Tool, but I can only imagine that was have been really cool.

I have no interest in seeing Mogwai live on their own. If they were at a festival or opening up for a band I wanted to see, I would probably give them a chance though. But there is no way I would pay to see just them. If any of you are willing to buy me a ticket to a Mogwai show, I would go.

I feel the same way ThomThom does was really hoping this wouldn't happen...everytime I hear this guys voice on the radio...I think...here we go again.
But, being inundated by his new solo stuff...I have to say that the one perspective that is interesting about him is his operatic styled voice/singing.

Tom Waits Planning Summer Tour
OMG! That's that weird guy ScarJo covered!
Septuplets, full solar eclipses, and Tom Waits tours: some things just don't come around too often. Lucky for us, 2008 is shaping up to be a favorable year, once which will see the elusive Mr. Waits grace stages across the U.S. and Europe.
According to report in "webpaper" The Washington Independent and confirmed by Waits' camp, the gravel-voiced one is in the process of putting together summer tours of the aforementioned locales. No dates just yet, but to be on the safe side, you probably want to start lining up outside your local ticket vendor now.
Waits last toured in August 2006, and people enjoyed it very much.
And hey, that Scarlett Johansson album! Word is it's better than you think.
A Red Rocks show would make up for the weak show line up so far this summer! :)

Last night, Holy Fuck and A Place to Bury Strangers lived up to all the hype I heard on this board. Did El Ten Eleven not play with them in those other shows, though, or did I just miss people raving about them, too? 'Cause I thought they were terrific and regretted not having brought cash to pick up one of their CDs. I was about 2 feet from the stage for APTBS and my ears are feeling it this morning -- they were fucking LOUD. It was sorta too bad I couldn't hear any of the lyrics but they were tight. I almost feel cheated, though, 'cause the singer/guitarist only wrecked one of his guitars. This was my second time in a month seeing Holy Fuck, which is an uncommon opportunity with a non-Tucson band in Tucson. They started off slow and I was surrounded by hipsters who seemed like they were there to say they were there more than they were there to enjoy the show, if their lack of movement was any indication. Around the third song, though, they got into a good groove that persisted for the rest of the set and the crowd started moving more.
Oh, and I saw a shirt with a cat for sale. Is it the one where the cat's wearing a little cowboy hat that you all were raving about? 'Cause, uh, I didn't think it was anything special.

I am not allowed to wear shirts with cursing to work (I've tried and someone always ends up saying something), YET a 10+ year old LoA shirt with demon pinups is totally fine? It's weird.
Why I don't like Bimbo's - the crowds there end up being the most annoying (to me) of any venue in SF, even more so than the Warfield. Maybe it's because it's all ages? (sorry PT), but people act like they've never been out in public before, let alone to enjoy a show, and behave like total imbeciles.
Here are things that annoy the hell out of me at Bimbo's: screaming into your cell phone because you can't hear your friend over the music. Go outside or wait until after the show. People holding up their cell phones for the entire set to get crappy video capture on their mobiles. People smoking indoors and being too sloppy with lit cigarettes and burning others' arms/clothes/etc. People spilling drinks on the "dance floor" surface up front that gets kind of slippery when wet, especially when wet + cups, bottles etc. People throwing (or putting) glass containers on the ground in the middle of a crowd. People crowding in super tight and then just standing there motionless and whining any time anyone tries to dance near them. People who spend the entire show talking loudly about how fucked up they are. Girls who wear stilettos to shows and then constant trip and fumble around because they can't walk properly in such shoes. The guys who bring these types of girls to shows as dates. It's usually too hot in there, too, and this is coming from someone who almost always wears a jacket or sweater indoors. Longer gaps between sets than exist at other venues with no reasonable entertainment/music between (I'm told that their backstage is crappy/cramped, which might be part of the problem). The security guards are incredibly annoying and spent the entire show very aggressively guarding aisles, such that if you loiter for a few seconds trying to find your friends again, they are all over your case. Charging more than any other venue I go to for simple things like a beer or bottle of water. Over watering and icing their mixed drinks. Don't even get me started about the transit and parking situation.
I could go on and on, but yea. Basically, it is just a bunch of annoying kids at a venue that goes out of its way to be unsatisfying.
It is pretty. But so is great american, which has almost none of these problems. :)

Bimbos isnt really alla ages, its what, 18 or 21 usually right? There is one act playing there that would be totally worth it. Richard Cheese, May 31st, oh yeah................. I like the Warfield, I have never had a bad crowd there when I have gone. I havent been to Great American yet.

Er, sorry, yes, they're not all ages, but frankly, allowing 18 year olds might as well be all ages to me! No offense to the young'uns, as I know most of you don't behave this way, and anyway I'm sure I was annoying as hell at shows when I was 18 too.
I really have to think about how much I want to see a show at Bimbo's, cuz when the night goes around, I almost never really want to go. I just never end up having a very good time there, you know? The ONLY bands I've gone there for in the last 5 years are blonde redhead and air (and air at bimbo's was really disappointing, to be honest; blonde redhead of course was not any of those times).

Are you going to this? I'm thinking about it, they are playing the SOMA side stage.
Yeah, I'm thinking of taking a friend who's birthday will have been a few days beforehand.
Elbow is 18+, yes, but I can't apologize for all the dipshit hipsters who show up to all ages shows... Especially the dudes. The ladies at least have one redeeming quality... And said quality is really only valid before and after shows... So yeah.
Still, dude, you make do with what you can. I really REALLY hope I don't find myself saying the same shit when I'm in my mid-twenties because of how hard I've pulled for all ages shows back in San Diego, but, I mean, I've already grown absolutely sick of the moshing crowd... Hence why I was hoping to actually ENJOY Dredg this time around... Fucking Enter Shitkari will probably open for them, damnit. Ugh.
Anyway, I hope some of you look past the fact that it's an 18+ show and decide to see Elbow anyway.
One of the things that pisses me off is when cheap shows or free shows are offered to the 21+ crowd. Sure, I'll probably take it for granted when I'm older, but fuck... How are 5$ concerts NOT intended for the low-income earning student, I ask you? [This is my problem with FM 94/9's About the Music series... It's not like the SoCo Music Experience where there's an obvious reason why the show was 21 and over, the radio station, and it's subsequent series of concerts that have gone on for the last... 2 years now, essentially suggest that the music played by the radio station is for a "mature" audience, which is bullshit given the fact they still play shit like Green Day and The Bravery... and, unfortunately, Linkin Park. If it's "About the Music" it should be about the listeners, since they stress that shit SO fucking much, but, clearly, their policies don't line up with their "message"... fucking bullshit].
Okay, gonna return from that angry tangent to say that... Elbow @ Bimbo's 365 in SF, in May. They aren't playing Coachella, they aren't doing a full tour. See them while you can. If you do choose to see them in SF? I'll see you there.

is today lil brother t-shirt day or something?
At the show I went too, they had large and extra large as well. Not just smalls and mediums.
My problem is, I am tall and pretty skinny. So if I get a large, it looks way too baggy on me, but mediums are usualy just a tad too short. But oh well. For concert shirts, mediums seem to fit me best. Except for the odd one. I can't wear my Vegoose shirt because I am pretty sure it was a youth medium, not an adult medium. Oh well.

Oh dude, it was awful....from going to the best sounding NYC venue, Roseland...to the worst, terminal 5...it really blew... Could barely hear the Beasties at all, equipment issues....it was still fun...but just kinda lame... They did play Rhymin and Stealin, and that made it all worth while.

seriously, fuck first fridays. why even mention the bands playing if theyre not going to let all the fans who bought tickets into the room to see them play?? we had to sit outside in the lobby for half of why?'s set before they finally took down the velvet rope and we were allowed into the room to watch them. i mean i guess all they really want is for people to buy a ticket to the show, come in, and just drink and eat. they don't actually care to make it possible for everyone to get into the show room. just drink up and make us some money while you sit in the lobby and watch it on a giant television screen projected on the wall.
if they're gonna do it like that, they should at least tell everyone that that's what's gonna happen. that if you really want to see the band, you better get your ass into the room at least 2 hours before they go on and not dilly dally in the rest of the museum. fuck that.
on a better note, why? kicked ass tonight. tangier was so so so much better (thank GOD for 21+ shows) but once i got past the ridiculous frat boys, i was able to enjoy it. they played all the hits. gemini, rubber traits, waterfalls, these few presidents, the vowels pt 2, good friday, THE HOLLOWS, song of the sad assasin, gnashville, a sky for shoestring horses under (thats really the title?), SIMEONS DILEMMA, crushed bones, 500 fingernails, and probably some others i dont remember.

It's "A Sky For Shoeing Horses Under." I'm glad that you had a good show, the situation sounds sucktacular though. They were a little tired sounding in SF on Thursday, I was worried since it was day 1 of the tour. Maybe they were just winding up. Could you hear my Waterfalls snippet I phoned you?

In some possible worlds, Terminal 5 has excellent sound.
This is true. Terminal 5 is absolute shit in all worlds except for Earth-3, where it has the best sound imaginable. And George W Bush's head has been carved onto Mount Rushmore for his creation of world peace and moratorium on fossil fuels. And Jack Johnson is the greatest singer-songwriter alive. And Radiohead and Portishead are awful post-grunge and nu-metal bands, respectively.

Yes they are very cool live. When I saw them at Alice's Summerthing in '06 they told the crowd that since they had given their label the boot that we probably would never hear from them again. They are way too talented to go by the wayside, so I am glad that they are touring again.

After posting in this thread a minute ago, I realized I never posted an after-show report on the PUSA show for paulb. So here goes.
Show was Feb. 29th (go leap day!) at the Blue Loon, which is a converted quonset hut. I'm not shitting you. Look at this place:
http://homepage.mac.com/hypernova/walrus/pusa/blueloon.jpg
That is the most popular venue in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Anyway, there was a freak windstorm all day on the 29th- 40mph sustained winds. The temperature was actually above zero, but with wind chill it was close to 50 below. I suffered for this picture:
http://homepage.mac.com/hypernova/walrus/pusa/sign.jpg
My girlfriend and I got in early and homesteaded front center stage... basically, the stage consists of a thick board on top of a wall of 30" speakers, so loud bass notes tended to blow my pants around a bit. Our location could not have been more perfect, but we paid for it by having to stay there through the execrable opening band, a local group who played only rock/nu-metal covers. Their rendition of "Bulls On Parade" somehow wasn't as special as hearing it live at the Polo Field last year. I would have felt bad about the lack of support I was showing them if they hadn't sucked quite as much ass as they did.
I'm not posting a picture of the cover band because they don't deserve one.
The opening band finally finished and, after a reasonable delay for setup/mic check, the Presidents came on. As I said, I was in the front row, so I was able to see the set list from where I was standing. It was a mix of old and new stuff- the songs with dots are ones that are one their new album.
http://homepage.mac.com/hypernova/walrus/pusa/setlist.jpg
For those who don't want to deal with the shorthand, here's the set list:
Boll Weevil
Kitty
Mixed Up *new album*
Volcano
Warhead *new album*
Dune Buggy
French Girl *new album*
Back Porch
Kick Out The Jams
Shreds Of Boa
Poor Turtle *new album*
Love Everybody
Ghosts *new album*
Mach 5
Lump
Video Killed The Radio Star
We Are Not Going To Make It
Encore:
Tiki God
Bath Of Fire **NOT ON SETLIST - played by request**
Some Postman
Peaches
So they basically covered all the bases. The only song missing that I wish they'd played was "Toob Amplifier", but you can't have everything.
http://homepage.mac.com/hypernova/walrus/pusa/pusa1.jpg
I won't lie; it's easy to impress me at a concert, because concerts up here are so rare that I feel like bands are doing me a favor just by playing within 400 miles. That said, I was expecting the Presidents to behave like a band whose star, while not fallen, is fairly clearly on the wane in terms of their popularity and critical acclaim. In that respect, they totally destroyed my expectations.
They didn't just play like they were having an okay time, they played like it was their favorite show they'd ever played... and the Fairbanks crowd, who are notoriously slow to warm up, responded in kind. They even played an extra song by request of the girl next to me during the encore. It was exactly the kind of show you want to be front and center for. I'm not a diehard PUSA fan, but my girlfriend is, and she was blown away. I had a great time, too, even if I wasn't as starry-eyed about it as she was.
http://homepage.mac.com/hypernova/walrus/pusa/pusa4.jpg
Parting impression: I was extremely impressed- it kind of caught me by surprise. I may have to check out their new album when it drops... this Tuesday, I think.

Just got back from the Eagles at the Forum. I can't believe how fucking good they still sound. They played a lot of new material and then a few songs I recognized, namely Hotel California, Boys of Summer, Heartache Tonight, and one more I can't remember. No Take It Easy. :(
The most interesting thing to me was this - I couldn't stop comparing them to John Fogerty. Now, I've seen John probably a good 30 times in my life, so I know his show down pretty cold, but they all walk the same, do the same rock dances, and have similar show videos in the background. I don't know if it's just cause I haven't seen that many classic rock acts in my life, or if it is a generational thing, but both shows were very similar. Bordering on cheesy, but so good that they couldn't be only that.
They're damn good tho. One of their new ones was almost a capella - just one acoustic guitar - and it gave me the chills, their harmonies were so good still.

ok, so sxsf at the richsaw stop last night kicked ass. I really dig that venue, it's tiny, couches upstairs, great djs between bands. ..
first off, hot tub should be avoided. having listened to their myspace I was actually hoping to arrive late enough that I'd miss them. not the case. seriously painful. avoid.
next, the Ting Tings KICK ASS. holy crap they were good. I think this was their first SF appearance? they killed it, they totally stole the night for me. I didn't even know their music, but they rocked. even the slow song was awesome. female vocalist/guitarist, male drummer/backing vocals. I can't wait to see more of them. sadly they didn't have any music for sale. nothing. all they had was empty vinyl covers that people could decorate for the band. so I stood there with sharpies decorating one.
the Duke Spirit were cool, but not nearly as impressive. I felt they lacked confidence, and didn't have much charisma. the guys in the band really did nothing for me. they were fun, but didn't live up to their record. oh, and no cuts across the land? wtf?
I wish I could have stayed for persephone's bees (who I keep trying to call the bird and the bee... wrong band). but it was 12.30 and they were still setting up. with several beers in me and work the next day I couldn't hack it. sadly I think most other people felt the same. the place emptied after the Duke Spirit finished. makes sense though -- English bands who don't have other tour dates planned are a draw. a local-ish band that is playing past midnight on a week night? no thanks.
kick ass night though.

walking through that neighborhood is fine. the homeless are not malicious. I've spent several drunk nights stumbling around sixth street. damn you mythic pizza.
what on earth is your job that you are hitting up liquor stores in the TL?

...so you run to the liquor store when the bar runs out of something?

shaker, I really wanted to see Ting Tings but work interfered once again. Glad to hear it was a good show.
Warfield -> Mezzanine, please be kidding me you people who claim that is a dangerous walk. It's less than one block. If you're really that worried about 6th street, go down 5th instead of 6th turn onto Jessie behind the old Mint.
Honestly, I wonder about some of you people sometimes.

Mar 17 - Rock Over London @ the Roxy Los Angeles, CA
None of you LA lot should miss this, as the marvellous Emmy The Great is playing (and Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip).
The same night, the equally great Laura Marling is at the Hotel Cafe (on at a very early 8pm) - if logistics allow, you should do both.

Two questions about upcoming shows:
First question: I like the Dead Kennedys. Is it worth seeing them at the House of Blues even if Jello Biafra is gone?
Second question: I like the Black Keys. I really want to see them at the Wiltern, but the only tickets left on Ticketmaster are in the mezzanine. I've never sat in the mezzanine, can you see anything from up there?
Thanks.

I am gonna have to say no. I haven't seen or heard them... but whats the point without Jello? Also, who the hell is stepping in for Jello?

I find this thread impossible to keep up with. Sorry if already posted. Ladytron tix for SF are going on sale on Sunday.
(thanks to the NME awards thread which I misread the dates on, and prompted me to go look at the Fillmore's site).

Why? Are you not going to Coachella this year?
Nope, my friends and I all agreed to skip on it this year (none of us are very keen on the line up). Not to mention, I really can't afford it (I doubled up last summer going to europe for roskilde, Primavera and Benicassim). AFX wouldn't have been enough for me to change my mind, but it comes close...

You hit up all 3 of those festivals last year? Damn... I don't blame you for skipping out this year then.

I remember in the chat room for the 2003 Radiohead WASTE presale (second leg), some girl said her "friend" let somebody go boom boom boom in her anoos for a ticket once.

Why dont you go to the GLASSHOUSE show the day before? Does Pomona not exist to you? And yes you can see everything from the Mezzzanine. And no DK without Jello is not worth it.
