Why dont you go to the GLASSHOUSE show the day before? Does Pomona not exist to you? And yes you can see everything from the Mezzzanine. And no DK without Jello is not worth it.
You were making such progress Chris. This is a step backwards.

All you had to do was omit the "Does Pomona even exist to you?" line and everything would have been golden. But yes, you did answer the questions. It wasn't a huge step backwards.

I am gonna have to say no. I haven't seen or heard them... but whats the point without Jello? Also, who the hell is stepping in for Jello?
The new guy is Jeff Penalty http://www.deadkennedys.com/m_jeff.html
I dunno, it could be a good show. I gotta respect the rest of the band, Jello couldn't have done it without them... and he's been such a bitch about the guys doing these shows I almost want to see them to spite him. By the way, Jello is my hero.
I did see Jello do some DK songs with the Melvins a while back which was cool.
Has anyone actually seen DK with the new guy? All the opinions submitted so far don't seem to have anything backing them up.

Second question: I like the Black Keys. I really want to see them at the Wiltern, but the only tickets left on Ticketmaster are in the mezzanine. I've never sat in the mezzanine, can you see anything from up there?
I personally think the mezzanine at the Wiltern blows. Loge is ok but the mezzanine is huge and steep and not very appealing.

Two questions about upcoming shows:
First question: I like the Dead Kennedys. Is it worth seeing them at the House of Blues even if Jello Biafra is gone?
Yes, DK are worth seeing even without Jello. It won't be historical and perfect but it'll be the fucking Dead Kennedys and since you like their music you'll love it.
I wouldn't fly around the world to follow them or anything but they're playing your city, then yeah.

I've got a theory that the Troubadour is losing lots of the bands that would traditionally be playing there to the Echoplex. Since the Echoplex retooled, the Troub's scheduled has looked much more sparse. I love the Echo and the Echoplex, two of my three favorite venues.

Yeah it seems believeable, and the Troub schedule does look sparse as you said and the echoplex schedule looks more desireable on any given week. I have been to Echoplex almost 10 times in the last year compared to maybe 3 or 4 for the Troub.

I do agree with that. The Troub is about 4 miles from my place, at most, while I have to drive all the way across town to get to the Echo(plex). At least they start shows late at the Echoplex, so I usually wait until traffic has cleared out before I drive out there.

Nope, no new songs this show. Well, they did write an entire song about the valley, while roll-calling every city in the area. That was pretty awesome.

Well, fuck all the naysayers.
Gogol Bordello put out awesome fucking shows, great time tonight. Every time I've seen them they always seem to bring it, tonight's crowd was insane. Rare occasion in this town..
Set list for those who care:

I just wish I didn't have to step into the office tomorrow morning, at fucking 7am. Ehhh...
The are playing Never Wanna Be Young Again, again? YES! That was one of my favorite songs of thiers at Coachella last year. I haven't heard it since. Wait... no Immigrant Punk though? That kind of sucks. WAIT. NO SALLY??? Now THAT sucks. How can they do a show without Sally? That kind of makes me sad.
Anyways, glad you had fun at Gogol. How many times have you seen them now? I can't wait for them again at Coachella.

Mehdi was pretty good last night at the mezzanine. crowd was sparse... lots of room for dancing though. some cute girls. :-)
I totally got ditched though. my friend got dragged away by his gf just minutes after we went down to the dancefloor when Mehdi started. wtf? it'd be polite to at least let me know they were leaving.
on another note, the ad in the sf weekly saying goodbye to the warfield was pretty surprising.

That's funny, I totally forgot about Immigrant Punk and Sally. It pretty much shows you how good the other songs fill the gaps.. This was my 3rd time catching them after last year's Coachella and Vegoose. It's cool w/the solo show being able to shake all the band member's hands afterwards, they really hang out a bit to interact with the fans.

I have unfortunately never been able to see them at a solo show. I have only seen them at festivals. But I have talked to lots of people who have and have talked with them after the shows. I've seen them 3 times as well, and Coachella will be my fourth. I ran into their drummer in ther field at Vegoose, and I said hi, told him I was big fan of the band and stuff. He was cool. Then I met the rest of the band at the autograph signing. Sergey is amazing. He can barely speak a word of English. He asked who to make the autograph out to, when he was talking to me girlfriend, and she said "Becky." He said he was going to spell it out to us first before writing it. He said "B-U? No? B-E? Yes. B-E-K? No? B-E-U? No..." and it went on from there. It was very funny. She has a great picture with him somewhere... I will see if I can find it. Also, the girls in the band are very nice. I was talking to, I think it was Elizabeth for a bit, very nice. And Eugene looked coke'd out of his mind. I asked him about his acting, and I am not sure if he understood a word I said haha.
But yes. I love Gogol.

I saw Built to Spill at The Pageant in St. Louis last night. Missed Helvetia, but made it in time to see Meat Puppets, who were great. They opened with "Sam". They played "Plateau", "Lake of Fire" and "Oh, Me", and the crowd definitely responded to those. Those and "Backwater". They play a full 70-minute set and were really good.
This was possibly the most enjoyable BTS show I've been to, partially due to the fact that it was on a Saturday, and I didn't have to worry about getting up today, and the fact that we had a big group of people and the fact that it was a great song selection. They played for over two hours. They played Brian Eno's "Third Uncle" and "Canada," a new song. There was another song I wasn't familiar with and after "Stab" they played a song that I knew, but cannot recall due to the booze. Good times.

The following addresses their war:
http://www.sfweekly.com/2008-03-12/news/ka-ching/
Here is a snippet:
"The Bay Guardian hit the lawsuit lottery for the second time in its history last Wednesday, winning a $15.6 million judgment against SF Weekly and its parent company, New Times (now Village Voice Media), and its former sister paper the East Bay Express."
They don't mention the Warfield in this article, but in past articles they did mention the lease expiring in May of this year. This lease expiration is also in conjunction with the Warfield's name change, to that of SF Weekly Warfield. The owners of the Warfield fought SF Weekly in court and said that as tenants SF Weekly could not change the name of the venue.
I will find the article and post the link.

Here's my two day Boredoms tandem reviews.
Saturday night, Boredoms played at Cane's in San Diego. The opener, The Human Bell, played very repetitive (in a good way) instrumental rock. They slowly built their songs up to rocking heights before bringing them back down. All the songs had a similar format, but they were all enjoyable. On this night, the sound wasn't overly loud for them, or so it seemed to me, which hurt their set in relation to Sunday. Sunday's show, they were louder, and they played one song that was faster and harder. They also responded really funnily to a heckler, saying "Don't worry, we've only got two more hours and then Boredoms will play for 15 minutes."
Boredoms came out with their new setup. This still includes Yoshimi, Wati and Taka on drums and eYe on noise, keys and vocals. However, they've added a keyboard to Yoshimi's setup, given Wati a sampler/keyboard and eYe, in his infinite wisdom, has built a guitar tree. A guitar tree, you say? Well, let me tell you. He has fused the bodies of seven guitars together into one really large guitar. The necks alternate sides, so there are four necks on one side and three on the other. Each guitar is tuned to a different open chord. eYe attacks each guitar with a stick to make it resonate, creating guitar sounds. This is even more awesome than it sounds.
Show descriptions for Boredoms:
Saturday-They started out with drumming, and lots of it. With three drummers, the rhythms are allowed to really intertwine and snake around, and they can focus into a tight, really vicious machine. After an extended drumming intro, eYe began playing with his noise makers to create a pretty cool, fluctuating synth base. When he started to attack the guitars with what looked like a kendo stick, it really took off. They did some variation of this for the two songs of the main set, which lasted around 70 minutes. It was awesome, and they were really impressive. However, the crowd, which was full of drunk meatheads jumping and bouncing into eachother (as well as myself and John), were less than fun to be around. Also, there was something about the sound (I found out on Sunday that it was the drum mix relative to eachother) that didn't quite sit for me. eYe's work took time to build, but when he hit the right notes, it was transcendent. They came out for an encore, which was one 15 minute jam. They started by doing rim shots on all the drums, with eYe on drums while Taka shook the guitars to get them to resonate. Then, Yoshimi started a keyboard line that was reminiscent of the spacier side of Vision Creation Newsun. They jammed around this spacey, less rhythmically intense idea until the end of the show. It's hard to describe, because they do so much, but it was great.
Sunday-I was very excited to go to this show, because I wanted to see if what I guessed was true, and it was. Almost all of these shows is improvisation. They played the same three songs, for the most part, in the sense that they all started the same way. However, after about a minute of the "head," they would spin off into a different direction. The Saturday show reminded me of Voordoms, the Boredoms variant that is very drum focused, and seems to me like early Boredoms mach 2. Tonight, they transcended any idea of Boredoms/Voordoms/rock and turned in one of the most amazing performances I've seen. eYe was more precise with his guitar attacks and Yoshimi was more present on her keyboards, so they created a more musical float over the rhythmic complexities. At one point, eYe, in the heat of a singing/screaming fit, jumped into the middle of the drum circle and started chanting. The lights all filtered out except for one white light that shone right down on him as he looked into it. The drums started to swirl around him, and a bass frequency buzzed as he chanted out this incantation that seemed to me like a prayer (he is a sun worshiper, part of a tribal Japanese religion that was virtually wiped out during World War 2). He then jumped back and started in on more noise. I thought that would be the best part of this amazing show, but I was wrong. For the encore, they came out and again started with the rim shots and resonations. However, Yoshimi and eYe then began to trade keyboard lines back and forth. It sounded like the best parts of VCN or Super AE, amplified, filtered and perfected. During the course of the 20 minute jam, they succeeded in surpassing every single piece of music they've yet recorded, reaching to a height that seemed cosmic. It was as if the sun-reaching Boredoms of those albums had finally gotten there, and now they are going even further. If they can press something close to that song onto an album, then I will die happy. Boredoms are one of my all time favorite groups, and that song was the best thing I've heard from them. This was a special, spiritual sort of show that is hard to even describe because it was so amazing. I will be making every attempt possible to go to the San Francisco show on Tuesday, because they're worth it.

Someday if we go to a show there together I'll show you the secret trick Lickey showed me.
I know of one secret parking area around there, but if I show up late, then I don't want to use it usually, because it's about a quarter mile's walk and it takes some time to get to the venue. I'd like to see the secret trick.

I just got back, and damn that was cool. the cafe du nord was bumpin', word is going to spread like a virus now. they're definitely on my coachella list now. can't wait 'till they come back to town so I can show more people!

Him, and did they play Radiohead? They did on Saturday, I was stoked. Tessa, did you catch the opening act or no?
So anyway, saw Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip tonight, along with 3 other british acts or all different genres. Sonofhal got it on the money and Emmy the Great was great. Rizz Mc was cool, although he started off shaky but his beats started to go better with his syhmes and it made all the difference in the world. Then what confused me the most was this band call ''There are Puritans'', a lot of kids were there to see them and they played the fastest 20 mins set I have seen, like it felt they were onstage 5 minutes and they were gone. But a lot of peopel left when they finished, which confused the crap out of me cause they were not anything special. Just kind of your average art rock brit band with young kids in it who you wouldnt find out about unless some tiny review in NME caught your eye when they played some tiny club 6 months ago in london. Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip tore it up, they played for abotu 50 minutes which doesnt seem long, but long enought o not bore you and keep you on edge. They did play the Radiohead sampled song '' Letter from God to Man'', I got that on video and photos and everything. So here is that stuff.

You know you are in for an intimate show at the troubadour when you show up 5 minutes before the headliner is supposed to be on the stage and you see no one outside smoking cigs, and the front inside bar is closed. Then you notice that the sign has been changed and the headliner will be on an hour later than the posted time on the website. It really didn’t matter to me though because Canada’s own Jason Collett (who played guitar in Broken Social Scene and is dating a Miss Leslie Feist) would be gracing the stage with his country indie rock set on this St. Patrick’s Day in West Hollywood.
Most people I guess were to busy drinking green beers and having Irish Car Bombs to stumble their way down Santa Monica Blvd for the $12 show. I wasn’t stumbling, even though I did drink a bottle of wine in the car. I guess when there was parking ˝ a block away I should have known no one would be there, but still where were the hipsters.
I walk through the doors and actually did a head count, not including members on stage for the opening band there was a total (including the bartender) of 37 people. Its alright though, this is the way I like my shows.
Collett graced the Troubadour with his presence at about 10pm and started with a rant about it being St. Patty’s day and how that must be big here. He then commented about how far the sparse crowd was from the stage and thanked them for giving him room for his acoustic break dancing set that would happen mid way through the show.
“Are you being sarcastic?” A girl shouted, and by shouted I mean said in a normal voice as there was no one really to talk over.
Collett laughed and replied “No I am from Canada, we are gentlemanly there.”
The set rocked out to a lot of brand spankin new tunes from the brand spankin new album (on my favorite label Arts & Crafts) “Here’s to Being Here”. The band all being from Toronto really had an incredible sound and brought some Canadian country sounds to the Troubadour. The first part of the set ended with what is my pick on the new album “Out of Time”. The tiny crowd even participated with hand claps through the song.
Mid way through the set Jason dismissed his band and just played acoustic. Very similar to what Amy Millan did on her solo tour when she came through WeHo. Before he started the second part of the set he went into a whole story about smoking weed in High School with a girl before a dance. Apparently part of the joint light his shirt on fire (it was a polyester V neck). He was kicked out of the dance while walking into it, and had to retrieve the coats of his date and himself from a room with one chair. A chair which he would trip over, then trip over a second time upon leaving. It was all because of a “Supersmoke” which we in California (and judging by the audiences response) all call shotgunning.
He says that’s the difference about Canada and the US. They just add super to smoking while we name it after guns.
It was the perfect intro to “Pink”, basically explaining the real life situation regarding the song. Its times like this I am glad to have passed up on green beer and made my way to a Canadian show.
The band rejoined Jason on set for a few more songs off the new album. “Paper Cut Hearts” and “Not Over You” rounded out the 80 minute (give or take) set. He even said he would be around at his merch table to talk with people after the show.
I don’t normally stay after a show, I just get my setlist and leave but I wanted to say Hi and thank him for coming out our way. I apologized for LA being shitty and no one coming out.
“Its ok mate, it’s a Monday, glad you were able to make it out, cheers!”
And on that note I had him sign my setlist and walked the half block to my car where I saw one girl vomiting out her door (and yes it was green) and another person peeing on the car behind me. We know who made the right choice this night.

They were probably at either Explosions in the Sky (Wiltern) or Ed Harcourt (Echoplex). I like Jason Collett and probably would have been there were it not for the two aforementioned shows. Nice review, tho.

PS I don't know how big the crew was on Moment of Truth, but my friend worked on the show too - her name is Cheryl. Do you know her? You probably don't. I think she worked in post.

Well, I just got back from seeing Boredoms in San Francisco. They played in the round, which was awesome. eYe apparently did hurt his ankle during the LA show, so he was on crutches, but that didn't hamper him much, as he still went insane. He started the show by using two light globes that acted as samplers/theremins to create first a noise symphony and then a keyboard fest, while he was screaming without a mic. It was the best opening of all the shows I saw them do. The main set was similar to the LA show, and, when I saw how carefully and fully mic'd all the drums where, it made me wonder if they might be doing this tour as a way to record their new album, developing ideas each night and then editing down from these jams to make a few tracks. If that's the case, then awesome. They did the standard 2 songs and one encore, but the crowd would not leave, so they came out and did a second encore, which amounted to eYe getting into the drum circle and chanting as they went berzerk, and then him using his guitar samples to create a kickass ascending riff. Great show, I'm glad I did the drive, even though I'm tired as all hell now.

And, to close this all out, I feel really great about getting to see Boredoms at this point. The music they're making right now proves that the Voordoms idea wasn't a tangent, but rather a way to redevelop the ideas they had been doing during the late 90s. Whatever comes of the music they're playing right now, i can guarantee it will be amazing and met with rapturous reviews. Anyone who has the chance to see them at any other point on this tour (and especially you New York people, seeing as how that's the last show and these pieces should be developed) you need to go. These were three of the most amazing displays of talent I've ever seen, and I can guarantee that this tour will be remembered as a special one for Boredoms.

Yeah. It's interesting, don't get me wrong, it's just a little aimless. You can do something that is really minimal, just has a voice, without it feeling like you aren't entirely sure where you are taking people. Listening to the album, it's pretty clear that the guy has a gorgeous voice, but just get's fucked up and tools around.
I would totally check him out live if the opportunity arose. I even almost picked up one of his records when I was at the store the other day, but decided to check it out online. I'm glad I didn't.

OK its official I am going to the EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY show at SOMA. See whoever is going there.
Was anybody else at this show that remembers the setlist?
Or what was the setlist in LA, was it the same by chance?
I remember they played(not in order):
Memorial(open)
The Birth and Death of the Day
Catastrophe and the Cure
Six Days at the Bottom of the Ocean
Yasmin the Light
I'll be at the saturday and sunday shows of theirs in San Francisco.
