Drink before the show - check. Are there any good bars that you know of in the area, or are you too young to drink?
bmack86
10-06-2008, 06:14 PM
I wouldn't recommend most of the bars in the area; it's near skid row, and the places down there are pretty vato at night. There's a club nearby, but I imagine the drinks would be pretty expensive. Usually we just bring some stuff and drink in the lot before we walk over, if we drink at all.

The bar on Main St. right next to the back of The Smell is amazing. We did cheap ass tequila shots there and when I went into the bathroom there were a gaggle of Mexicans doing a bunch of coke that dispersed like roaches when I walked in. But bringing yr own alcohol and drinking in the car or disguising it in a soda bottle is probably a better idea.

Sorry, I missed Baroness because I was starving and had to get some food. Got back to the show as High on Fire were still playing. They were insanely heavy and sludgy as expected. I wish I had caught more of their set. Opeth finally came on and, well, they're pretty much the greatest current metal band that I know of. The sound was a little bit muddled, but they still sounded fucking phenomenal. Perfect mix of crushing brutality and beautiful melodic passages. This was the first time I saw them as a headliner and I seriously wish they could've played another two hours. I can post a set-list if you or anyone else is interested. Otherwise, just go see Opeth on their current tour.

It was a great experience....they were wearing masks not helmets at that time. I had a great time and the crowd was going crazy. It was one of the most magical nights at the El Rey. I usually don't get this corny about shows.
I has seen them earlier at Jason Bentley's Bossanova at it's old location on main street before they wore masks. I didn't even know I was seeing Daft Punk until years later I found the flyer and I was like, really? I was kind of out of my head that night.
I've seen so many random acts over the years at strange locations for instance that show in Downtown LA that was a film shoot for the movie Strange Days. Dee Lite and Aphex Twin played.
I saw Groove Armada at Fais do do.

Yep that's the show, it was awesome.
So I bought tickets through live nation's website and I never got them so I had to call their customer service line. They said sorry and said they would have tickets for me at will call. So I asked a simple question next and this is what they said.
"What happens if my tickets were stolen from my mailbox? What if someone goes into the show before me with those tickets?"
This is what the operator said, "Don't worry we've voided those tickets and will be issuing you the same tickets with new bar codes. Under these circumstances we inform the venue that when the code void comes up on the ticket scanner that they are to have security detain the person and call the police and have the person arrested.".
I do hate it when my tickets disappear but I think this is a little extreme.

Just got this email:
DJ AM aka Adam Goldstein has been a close friend of both BPM Magazine and myself personally for many years now and we owe him a debt of gratitude that we can never repay, but we hope this helps just a bit…
KROQ & DECKSTAR in association with T-Mobile and BPM Magazine are hosting a very special event to WELCOME HOME DJ AM. The party will be filled with huge DJ performances, all by personal friends of AM including MARK RONSON, CUT CHEMIST, MIXMASTER MIKE, STEVE AOKI, MOMJEANS AKA DANNY MASTERSON, DJ VICE, DJ HOMICIDE, DJ SPIDER, JUS SKE, GRAHAM FUNKE, STONEROKK, DJ FASHEN & MIKE B.
The welcome home party goes down in one week, Tuesday October 14th at Avalon Hollywood (18+) from 10p-3am. Now before you ask there is NO guestlist, NO exceptions. Tickets are currently $20 each at www.wantickets.com with proceeds going towards the memorial funds of those lost in the recent tragedy.

Yeah, Murs is a cool dude. He's hit up our area many times over the past few years.
Last night's show was great, it was the second stop of his Murs For President tour and he really puts on an enthusiastic performance. This town really supports Living Legends, so he spend most of the night being very gracious. I didn't get a chance to kick it with him afterwards, but I did talk some baseball and bullshit w/one of the dudes from Kidz in The Hall, who opened.
Also, Murs' tour bus was badass:

Just got back from the show. It was fucking sick. Low Vs. Diamond surprised me, they are a very good band. Alice Smith(I think) has got a great, great, voice. She needs to discover her true sound though. Mates Of State played a quick 40-45 minute set filled with great pop songs. No Get Better, it's cool though. they had some tech. difficulties. Santogold, WOW, talk about a great performer. JUST FUCKING AMAZING, if you missed her and you like her music you FAIL. Go see her if she is still coming through your town. she played for about 45-50 minutes, but man sbess she is a PERFORMER. She really engages the crowd, and makes you feel like a part of the experience. SO GREAT. She let a bunch of people on stage with her, she played every song that people wanted to hear(except lights out, which sucked a bit) but that wasn't going to make me sour at all. GREAT GREAT GREAT. She also seems greatful to have a fanbase like she does, she sold out the show. She seems like a very nice person also. OH the only thing that sucked was that Santogold had no merch. Yeah seeing them on back to back nights would be trying physically. I was super sore, exhausted and covered in welts/bruises yesterday, still have some nice ones today. Epic proposal aside how were they last night?
Methinks I made a massive mistake not making the trip up to Vancouver for the double!!

Gogol were better on stage last night, than the Metro show.... there was no Mexican guy in the band either!!!! which is a + cause i hate how he fucks up all the songs with his random spanish rapping...and how he ruins Start Wearing Purple by interupting Eugene...
but the audience at the Metro were alot better....alot more fun, going offness... I had some drunk douchebag passing out, spilling beer next to me... twas lame...and some klinger chic who started rubbing all over Josh's friend was up in everyones crawlspace, trying to touch and fuck everyone in site...and this chic was fat and ugly.

It would have been awesome to have you there Jeff.
The band was great. It was musically, either tied with or just as good as Coachella 07. However, after the show when I was backstage, the guitarist was saying they were having some sound problems and he hoped they would be smoothed over for the second show tonight. I didn't notice any though.

Oh man, what a night then. And you guys get to do it again! I'm jealous.
Just when you think they can't get any better... Didn't it seem like they got a lot tighter? On Thursday I got the impression they played extremely well together, it was really noticeable.

The band members all have an undeniable chemistry with each other. However, the one thing I really don't like... is how little the girls are used now. At Coachella 07 the girls were onstage almost the entire show and used the giant bass drum and cybals almost all the time. Not only that though, the had other random instruments including whistles and washboards. Now the only sing for a couple songs... and ONLY use the giant bassdrum and cybals, and only during one song.

Agreed Rage, the girls should come out a lot more.

no live band, I remember reading reviews that said she did, but I don't know what happened. The show was still AMAZING.
She had a live band at Pukkelpop, and it was infinitely better than the Coachella set.

I did notice that the singer/dancer/percussion girls were used a bit more sparingly. They only busted out the bass drum for the last song yeah?

Well, saw the Mae Shi again tonight. They were awesome, as always. Jeff, the guitar player, got kicked in the face after he fell off a monitor and was covered in blood, they played Pwnd for the first time in a long ass time (as far as I'm aware), they did two new songs, opened with some old ones, and generally rocked. And, before the show, they all said hi to me, because apparently I'm a regular now. Also, Bad Dudes, who opened, were awesome. They were like a metal band without ever getting into riffs. All full of tangled, knotty guitar lines. Too cool.

Tonight was fuckin excellent at Gogol Bordello!!!! This show clearly didnt have the importance and epicness of what happened on stage last night... but this show was better in my eyes... The setlist wasnt as predicatable...heard 5 songs I had never seen live before, and had the most fun time in the pits, not many douchebags, just a big dance and party fest... Josh used his backstage pass again and hooked me up with a setlist... great guy.

Theyre a lot of fun man. A LOT. But I've seen them twice this year, coachella and their show down here. I've had my fill for a while. I cannot imagine 2 nights of Gogol in a row. It baffles me. I hope they take a break before they burn themselves out

No, they're not. Put up with 30 minutes of that bullshit at Coach this year SOLELY so that I could have an informed opinion on them to deal with this never-ending fountain of praise the board spews about a gypsy punk band (ugh). Sure enough it was heinous tripe, made by rhythmless white people for other rhythmless white people to imitate dancing without looking as stupid as they would if they were trying to move to real music.

You know their bassist is black, right? Not to mention the asian chicks, the latino hype dude, etc... I can understand that assertion concerning a band as white as, say, Vampire Weekend or Beirut, but Gogol Bordello isn't exactly pale as bleach.

Honestly, I feel the same way. I found their Coachella set to be pretty unbearable musically speaking. It is cool they can get the crowd going and all, but I have no idea why. Especially when you consider MMJ followed them, blew them out of the water tenfold, and was shrugged off by the crowd.

Some people don't like it. That is fine with me. However, whether you undertstand it or not, Gogol Bordello represents an entire culture of music. If you don't like Gogol Bordello's music, don't go to Eastern Europe. Their music is faithfully rooted in traditional eastern european music, with flares of punk, rock and reggae thrown in. I have talked to many people from eastern europe, who love Gogol Bordello. They say they are putting back the life in Balkan music and doing it well. The life and pure energy in that music is actually quite amazing.
Also Randy, the band aren't a bunch of "rhythmless white people." The guitarist is from Isreal, the bassist is from Ethiopia, one of the girls is Chinese, the other girl is Taiwanese and another one of the guys is from Equador. The Drummer is from Floria, he is white, the violinist and accordion player are both from Russia and Eugene Hutz is Ukranian. However as Eugene Hutz says "Upon arriving in the melting pot, I get nestled in as a goddamn white."
Boourns
10-12-2008, 10:41 AM
So Eugene is the only real cracker.
I thought their set at Coachella was fun, but I only caught the first half hour. Missed the drum bit, sadly.
And it was all for nothing, too. I was hoping to get up front for Metric by arriving early...NOPE. The one non-mainstage band I couldn't get in the first 10 rows for without knocking into people like a douchebag the entire weekend. Well, Battles, but I showed up right on time, so that was my own fault.

i liked their show on 2007. never had heard of them before and stopped to see them in my way to evil nine. i stayed there the whole show. it was a great surprise.
but that was it. saw part of their set at coachella this year and wasn't that great. saw their whole show at acl and was good but nothing special. i probably wouldn't pay to see them at a small venue.
