I just bought my of montreal tickets for next week, and I'm going to see Gang Gang Dance and Marnie Stern tonight, thanks to Chris. Tomorrow is Part Time Punks Fest with Vivian Girls, Love Is All, A Certain Ratio, Pylon and shit tons of other great bands. Fuck yes concerts. I've not been to one in too long.

Scissors for Lefty today.
free show at our school. a friend of mine also booked some local bands to play. if we get a good turnout we could possibly book another event in the spring, but there's only so little you could do with 1200 bucks.

They opened for Metric in Scotland a few years back, and very good they were too.

They were really good last year. But they also played Superfuzz Bigmuff, so that was a guaranteed good show.

That Melvins - Houdini/Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff show was ridiculous amounts of fun. I was surprised that Mark Arm sounded exactly the same as on record from nearly 20 years ago.

In other news, I saw Boris last night, and they were all kinds of awesome, as is to be expected. I was a little bit drunker than I intended to be, and nearly slipped on someone else's vomit in the bathroom multiple times, but I had a great time and sustained some substantial hearing loss. No Age on Thursday, hopefully.

Who's going?

'Three Days' away: Jane's Addiction to play El Cid on Thursday night

The original lineup of Jane's Addiction is set to play another tiny venue in Los Angeles. Following on the heels of last month's near-impossible to get into engagement at downtown’s La Cita, the band will perform at Silverlake's El Cid this Thursday evening.

Details are still being worked out, but Dave Navarro wrote on his blog yesterday that “the venue is a bit larger. … Hopefully we can all avoid another fire masrshal [sic] fiasco."

El Cid is indeed bigger than La Cita, but not by much. Don’t even think about showing up after 8 p.m. and expect to see the band in such an intimate setting. Jane’s Addiction will surely do everything in its power this time around to make sure as many fans as possible get inside. (El Cid, a Mexican restaurant that books mostly local indie rock acts, is not exactly the type of venue impressed by name-droppers at the door).

The Jane’s Addiction guitarist apologized to fans at 6767.com after the packed La Cita gig, writing "Many of our own friends and family members were unable to attend and it looks as though we are simply going to have to make it up to everybody somehow!"

Looks like the makeup begins Thursday. We're hearing tickets will go for $9 at the door, and that it will be first come, first served, but we have yet to officially confirm that price. Pop & Hiss will update this page with more details as we get them.

We are also hearing the band is getting along so well, a full tour might be in the works for 2009.

I'm hoping that after the Jane's Addiction show on Thursday they announce a tour. I doubt they'll play Coachella since they'll probably either be on tour or will have already toured by then, they will have burned out the LA market. Same goes for STP, they played the Hollywood Bowl in June, did the free Jimmy Kimmel show, and now the NYE show so I doubt they'll ever play Coachella. Had they done it for their first reunion show it would have been a big draw though, but I don't see STP or Jane's really fitting in with Coachella, they're better off doing their own shows.

Yeasayer were awesome last night. I really, really enjoyed their show. I don 't know exactly what it was, but I have a feeling Yeasayer are going to be big one day. Maybe not like BIG big, but... I don't know. The words aren't comming to me right now. Basically, what I am saying is see Yeasayer now. They played the entirety of their album last night, as well as 4 new songs. I had heard 3 of before (from the Lolla webcast) and they also played a brand new one last night. The guitarist sang lead vocals and it was a killer song. Also, Amblin Alps, one of their new songs, ruled so much it was kind of rediculous. The bass in that song is mind-blowing. Actually, their bassist is just all sorts of incredible. Anyways, yes. Everyone, go see them. Jared, you are in for an excellent show tonight.
And the opening band Icy Demons were pretty fun. They sounded like avant garde jazz + 80 sytnth pop on acid + TV on the Radio. Yes, they sound as weird as that description.

wmgaretjax
11-20-2008, 09:39 AM

Really the Icy Demons? They opened for Of Montreal here in Denver.

They didn't seem like they were trying to hard last night. They just looked like they were up there to have a good time. Why did they remind you of Wesley Willis though? The only similarity I see is that the lead singer of Icy Demons is black.

Drugs would have been almost too much for this show.
Their show last night here was fantastic. I knew it would be a long show when I saw that the setlists were printed on 11x17 sheets. The costumes and skits were great as usual. I can't imagine the logistics of coordinating all that on a small stage. I headed for the door as soon as they started the Teen Spirit cover, which I assume was the last song and they were well over the two hour mark.

So I traversed some hellish winter weather last night to catch No Age. At one point, my car lost control, turned off, and completely spun out in the middle of the highway, somehow landing me just barely into the safety of the shoulder. I ended up making it up there and back in one piece though, so I guess no matter what, I should consider it the best show of my life considering how many times I nearly got into a major car wreck just to get to it.

Unfortunately, because it took an extra 40 minutes or so to get there due to the snow, I missed the first act, Soft Circle. I like his album and remember his opening set for the Boredoms a few years ago being pretty good, so that was a bit of a disappointment. Even more disappointing was that I did catch the act immediately proceeding him, Best Fwends, who have to be the single worst opening "band" I have ever seen, and that's saying something. If nothing else, they gave me confidence that anyone, no matter how untalented, unfunny, and uninspired, can be in a touring band (they came to Ohio from Fort Worth, TX and apparently have been around for four fucking years). Here's a typical song:

CmNo_T-TLaY

If you see them on the bill for any show you plan on attending, plan accordingly.

After that was Matt & Kim, who are just ok music wise, but mostly get by on sheer goodwill and energy. I don't think I've ever seen two people so obviously excited about all life. Most of the crowd was really into them too. They were fun, I was glad I saw them, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see them again.

Finally No Age came on and seemed to play to the smallest crowd of the night for some reason. Outside of LA, they're still really off the map, I guess, or maybe people just weren't excited enough about them to brave the shitty weather. Despite the tiny audience and the fact that Dean was sick and looked like he was about to drop dead literally any second, they fucking tore through their set with the usual amount of ferocity. At the end of the show, Randy had to pretty much force Dean to play one more song, but Dean was a good sport. I thanked him after the show for keeping up the energy and bought a white vinyl of Nouns that I couldn't afford just because of how awesome those two guys are.

I don't think there's anything good coming up for months.

Saw Yeasayer with Icy Demons last night.

YB was on the dime with Icy Demons, they were trying way too hard... But their heart was in the right place. The guitarist and drummer were pretty grooving though. I don't know, just felt like re-worked lounge music to me.

Yeasayer fucking rocked. End of story. They were a blast. I love the lead singer because he tries a little hard because he seems a little insecure, but has a lot of energy... It ends up being a really genuine somehow... I would go see them again in a month if they were back in town. It sold out too (1000 person venue) which is pretty cool. The new songs sounded great, I heard a lot of animal collective in some of his yelping and in the segues... And damn that dude can play the bass and sing.

Tonight is Deerhunter, color me excited... Barr cancelled, so the new band by the Blood Brothers are opening... I will not be going for them, but will for Times New Viking.

^^I'm thinking about getting tickets to that...

...just bought tickets for Polyphonic Spree, Lykke Li and Cut Copy.

we have a Nine Inch Nails road trip this weekend with excellent nin.com tickets and a hotel right next door to the facility...excited!

Still undecided about the Spree...we'll be getting tix for Cut Copy next week. (Gotta ration out the show monies.)

Are the Polyphonic Spree religious? Maybe they just appear to be because they resemble a large choir. They are inspirational, even if secular in nature.

Jeremy Enigk tonight. I get paid today. I dont have work tomorrow. I'm getting shitfaced tonight. BYU/Utah game tomorrow. Getting shitfaced tomorrow. Coldplay with this girl after the game. Sex.

This has potential to be one of the greatest weekends of my life.

I actually think I read somewhere that the lead singer is autistic. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Personally, I think he has great stage presence. Very odd and awkward, but charming and entertaining at the same time. I love his erratic hand gestures. Also, judging from their new songs they played, I definately think the new album will top All Hours Cymbals. And the bassist is insane. I think he may actually be one of the best bassists I have ever seen/heard.
The pretty much have to be at Coachella next year.

I've got Shadow Dancer (Boys Noize Records) tonight at Chop Suey and my wife informed me that we will be going to see the Sisters of Mercy sunday night at El Corazon. We haven't been to either venue since moving to Seattle, so that'll be cool. I sure hope that Sisters isn't too annoying.

the best part is tickets are only 20 bucks if you buy at the canes box office, which is what my friend did for us.
Also 91x announced their holiday show which has Slightly Stoopid, CAKE, Alkaline Trio, and the Gaslight Anthem. I am seriously thinking about going because it's at the 4th and B, and tickets are only 30 bucks.

it's around there(400-450 or so), but knowing the fags at Canes, they will oversell by at least 100-150 people, which will make it and extra dancey, stuffy, rock n roll fucking show. GOOD TIMES.

Times New VIking was fun before as well, but if you aren't into the noise punk thing they aren't going to change your mind.

Oh yeah there is this Cuban Hurricane relief show happening 11/29/2008 at the Santa Monica Civic...

Jackson Browne & his band with friends, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, Ry Cooder, & Ben Harper and the Relentless 7 - A Benefit for Hurricane Relief

$75 a ticket but they had some on Goldstar for 37.50..

They played for almost 90 minutes... They played almost all of Microcastle, hitting all the necessities... I know they played a couple off Weird Era (including Calvary Scars/Aux Out)... And a good chunk of Cryptograms/Flourescent Grey (but they didn't play the song Flourescent Grey).

Bradford played guitar the whole show (making it 3 guitars this time around, a really smart choice).

Tom Morello is cool. He graduated from Harvard University and worked for the late progressive Democratic senator from California, Alan Cranston. Cranston was a great man who did so much on behalf of world peace and ending the nuclear arms race. His campaign for the 1984 Democratic presidential nomination was legendary. On youtube, there are some old Cranston 1984 presidential campaign commercials. I wonder if Morello was involved in making them. He may have just worked in his governmental oice, and not on his presidential campaign.

Actually, if it is assigned seat, I sit in my assigned seat. I try to purchase as good a seat as possible, but I am not one of those jerk offs that sneaks into better seats. I do not like to be embarassed when the actual seat holder shows up for that seat and I am taking it.

Ok, for GA shows, I do get there as early as possible and plan my day getting to the front. The early bird gets the worm and the squeaky wheel gets the grease. I do not break laws nor hurt people in order to get a good spot at a GA show and I try to be friendly with the other people who stand nearby me.
