Shut the fuck up Chris. I took you to Deerhunter.

I have one ticket and I don't want to go alone so I wanted to sell it or give it away. Then Jeff says he has an extra ticket. So now I'll go with my friend.

So there!!!

I just got back from a local show, with Fathers Day, Fertile Crescent, Coal Mine Canaries, Soft Shoulder, Andrew Jackson Jihad, and Treasure Mammal. Only the last one was any good, the others were just horrible (Jihad would have been okay, but they played essentially the same song eight times in a row). It was fun, but I regret not seeing Deerhunter at such a small venue when I had the chance

Not much coming up for me aside from the following...

Franz Ferdinand @ Canes 12/15/08

Animal Collective @ The Fonda 1/23/09

I also wish I could have gone to M83. I fucking hate school.

Fuck school, Sasha. You should've went. They were great! My friend who's not really into music really enjoyed it too. M83 should play the background music for an epic, apocalyptic battle. Or a bittersweet end to star-crossed lovers. Thanks again, Jeff, for the ticket!

ThomThom
11-30-2008, 08:23 PM
I can't really stand people who have rules/rituals/guidelines in place when it comes to seeing a show. I go to get out, listen to/see good live music, meet new people, socialize, have a couple drinks and that's it. That's why it is hard for me to connect with most Radiohead klingons when I attend their concerts.

shakermaker113
11-30-2008, 09:55 PM
I don't like to wear band shirts to other bands' shows because I feel like often its a cry for attention, and a little bit cliche.

I usually won't listen to a band the entire week preceding seeing them live.

but there are exceptions in both cases. neither is a ritual or a rule. it's just how I happen to behave.

The whole wearing a band's shirt at their show thing makes you a little too fan-boyish yes? Sort of like you're trying to out-fan everyone else there.

But what about festivals? I see no problem with indicating to people who you're there to see with so many options. And it would attract fellow supporters.

I always make a point of listening to the band a fair amount in the days preceding their show. I gets me excited for the show and it makes comparing the sound on album to the live performance more accurate.

I think I began my habit in high school. I noticed I sometimes over exposed myself to albums I liked, and would get sick of them. when I had tickets to a show I didn't want to show up not wanting to hear it any more. so I started to fast, as it were, for a period before the show.

to each his own. that's how I do it, I'm not trying to suggest anyone else need do the same.

I tried to go the whole month of September 2003 without listening to any Radiohead. I made it to the night of the 21st, when I put on the Street Spirit single without thinking. So I immediately skipped to Bishop's Robes, figuring it was okay since they weren't going to play that song, anyway. And I listened to a few other rarities later, like "Big Ideas". Oops.

It actually was a great festival... but it was full of horrible conflicts. Battles and Gogol Bordello was the worst conflict I have ever faced in my entire life.

Not only that... but Public Enemy and Cypress Hill directly conflicted. Also, Atmosphere conlficted by 15 with all of them. The only 3 hip-hop acts at the festival, played at the same time.

THATS not even all though. Queens of The Stone Age and Iggy & The Stooges partially conflicted. That majorly sucked. QOTSA rocked it... but I only stayed half way and ran over to The Stooges. I ended up only missing 1 and half Stooges song. Then they proceeded to kick my ass.

Seriously, that's just completely WTF. I mean, Public Enemy, easily, but you just don't do that.

Vegoose gets credit for not having any major (or any?) conflicts with Blonde Redhead. Oh how I miss Blonde Redhead. Saw them three times in a one year period and it wasn't enough.

Festivals are an exception to the rule. I wore a Beck shirt to Outside Lands and my Gogol shirt to Detour this year. The only exception to wearing a band's shirt at their own show is the Aquabats, because everyone does it.

On the other side it bugs me when I get into a band that just stopped touring or start listening to a band again that never tours (I'm looking at you The Knife and Boards of Canada) because I know I will never experience the music live. I think I've let the seeing a band live and listening to a band on record become too intertwined.

wow...just got back from Metallica. The show was excellent. Full of energy, lots of fire, decent setlist, but it was the 1st time id heard alot of them live, so that was a bonus. Got a Metallica/Death Magnetic beach ball that they drop during Seek and Destroy....a guitar pick from Kirk and a Lamb of God setlist....it was a very fun day... Lots of issues with the sound from the floor though. The speakers for the mics are up in the air, meant for people in the seats... hard to hear any bands vocals really unless you know what their singing. Key Arena is pretty fucked up, no alcohol sold at all, no moshing allowed, I saw a guy jumping up and down and security immediatly ran over to him and made him stop.

The setlists if anyone cares:

Metallica:
That Was Just Your Life
The End Of The Line
Creeping Death
Harvester Of Sorrow
One
Broken, Beat And Scarred
Cyanide
Sad But True
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Wherever I May Roam
The Day That Never Comes
Master Of Puppets
Blackened
Nothing Else Matters
Enter Sandman
- - - - - - - -
Die, Die My Darling
Motorbreath
Seek and Destroy

Lamb of God:
Hourglass
Laid To Rest
Walk With Me In Hell
Ruin
Overhauled (new song)
Now You've Got Something To Die For
Redneck
Black Label

deerhunter were amazing last night. it wasn't too crowded which was nice, but i feel people were lacking energy. i was in the front where it wasn't bad, but i could see people looking bored in the back. i didn't find bradford after the show, but i asked some of the other guys about coachella, and they say they don't know yet. more specifically 'we are still waiting, keep checking out.' i don't know what that means, but it sounded to me that they will be there but they didn't want to say it.

You should go. What better option do you have for Thursday night?

It's true...but spending the $75 to see a band im so/so about doesnt seen that tempting. staying at home, cooking, smoking, and watching college football does. and i LOVE live music, but something about them turns me off.

ok THIS is rad - you can intern for the production manager of bumbershoot for like six months. Amazing opportunity it looks like. If you live in Seattle and have the time to spare, you should totally do this:

Saw Titus Andronicus and No Age tonight. Both kicked ass in different ways. Titus Andronicus were shambolic, anthemic, garagey rock. Think Springsteen, the Troggs and the Replacements having a party together. Really great set. I bought their album on vinyl, it was one of 500 or something that they hand-made the sleeves for.

This was my first time seeing No Age. They played everything I wanted to hear, including "Ripped Knees". Kids were moshing in front of us and generally having a punk rock good time. It was pretty loud and I forgot earplugs. The energy level was extremely high. I have to do homework so I will type a more in-depth review later. Or Bryan can. Or Jeff.

I can see how you get that vibe from the record. Live, it's all good times where you just don't give a fuck. Which is really refreshing sometimes. It is how rock n' roll should be.

Metallica were awesome last night by the way. Paul said Seattle was better, but I still thoroughly enjoyed them. I got to hear Battery, which was one of my #1 wants. They played it right after Master of Puppets too. For Whom The Bell Tolls into Ride The Lightning right at the beginning of the set was awesome too. I also had no idea Metallica had such a cool laser show. Unfortunately they only used the lasers twice. They should have utilized them more.
Also, a warning for anyone planning on seeing Metallica... the sound SUCKS. I was standing in front of James Hetfields amps, and I could barely hear any of Kirk's solos. Also, if you are on the floor, don't expect to hear any vocals.
The Sword also fucking rocked hard. Lamb of God were also really good. Very entertaining and some great guitar solo's and great drumming. It was a good night overall.

It seems vocals up front are often hard to hear for a lot of bands. Radiohead in Santa Barbara, for at least the first couple songs, anyway. And Asobi Seksu...I could barely hear any, and that's one of my favorite aspects of their music. But I could hear the vocals a lot better outside during the soundcheck. I think the latter example is because of the nature of the music, all that wonderful noise and such. Hate to be lazy and namedrop My Bloody Valentine, but yeah, similar deal.

And when I saw Muse at the Forum, I was in the back in the seats to the side and I could barely hear any vocals there.

But when I saw A Perfect Circle at another arena and was pretty close to the front, I could hear them just fine.

The shows featured remakes of 60's classics and several top hits from Styx and Night Ranger. At the end of a Styx tour, Shaw Blades added a 2nd tour with new dates through the end of 2007.

12/30 and 12/31-Butthole Surfers at the Fillmore

Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck I hope I don't have to work then. If I don't, I'll be in the bay for New Years, and there's no way in hell I could miss the Butthole Surfers.

What? Fuck! I hate myself for deciding not to go to San Fran on New Years... ugh. I coulda seen The Butthole Surfers on the 30th, then Fantomas on the 31st. I kind of want to cry right now.

I've got Mercury Rev with Dean & Britta tonight. The Bearsville Theater is a small venue in Woodstock, incredibly intimate. They played the same place a few years ago and it was magical.

please let me know how they were tonight cause they're playing here in a week and ahalf and im trying to decide if im gonna go or not. i dont know that many of their songs but i like the ones ive heard. do you think i'll still enjoy it enough?

i went to keane tonight at the echo. they're really not that great, jesus. i don't know why i thought i'd enjoy that. they were so cheesy that i resorted to closing my eyes and trying to imagine that i wasn't seeing keane, but actually just a random local band who turned out to be not as bad as expected. maybe even had some promise. but then i would invariably open my eyes and see keane standing in front of me. i left after 40 minutes. they were absolutely no substitute for oasis. fuck.

I saw them twice in 1996, the first was at the Greek Theater (it was an awesome show with the Toadies, Supersuckers and the Reverend Horton Heat) and the last time was in AZ and Gibby walked offstage after being hit in the face with a drink during their third song at a radio festival.

Rocke, I didn't so much as choose Keane over Oasis, I just didn't want to pony up for them. So my friend got me into this sold out Keane show at the Echo, a myspace secret show, which I thought would be a decent substitute. I was so wrong. When Keane aren't standing in the middle of the O2 Arena in London, tons of lights and production and shit going on behind them.... when they're just holed up on a tiny stage in a dingy club in Silverlake, they're really really not that good. There were definitely diehard Keane fans there who would disagree with me, but yeah, I was actually embarrassed after a while.

amyzzz
12-05-2008, 07:50 AM
Well, Keane were awesome on their first tour at this dingy little (now closed) club The Mason Jar. I haven't seen them since they toured for their first album though since they haven't come here at all.

I concede that there is a possibility that they have gotten worse post-rehab (singer was in rehab for alcoholism).

Thanks for the heads up. They were great at Coachella.

So I'm debating whether to go to CSS on the 11th or that Crystal Castles/Destructo DJ set at the Viper Room on the 10th. I've already seen CSS this year, and it's only a mile down the road, but on the other hand I've never seen Crystal Castles. I hear very mixed things about their live shows, and this is only a DJ set, so it still wouldn't count as really seeing them, and I have not heard how good or bad their DJ sets are. Maybe I'll stay home or check out some more God Is an Astronaut.

that's with Fiery Furnaces, no? should be an exciting night you lucky bastard. it's too late to direct you to their albums, so just watch/ listen to these. also, the new show balances out the gay theatre and dance fun. so one minute you'll be dancing your ass off, the next minute you'll be watching Kevin Barnes strutting around naked and fighting ninjas.

God is an Astronaut were pretty good at The Casbah on thursday night. The place was really empty, but they didn't disappoint. My friend and I spent most of The Frequency's set talking with the drummer from GiaA. Nice guy, ended up buying us each a beer.

Awesome! Happen to know what they played by any chance?

This was actually cancelled, he'll be playing on February 20th instead.
Just a heads up.
If i can't make it up to butthole surfers I'll be seeing Abe Vigoda that night.

O, i thought they had just taken it off the site but were still going on with it. Thanks for the notice.

Are Abe Vigoda playing the Smell that night? That'd be a good time, like always.

He's the most flamboyantly gay straight man in the world, and it's awesome. I don't care what people say about them selling the song to Outback, look at what it's allowed them to do. It's not selling out if it magnifies awesomeness.

Cause he got almost nekkid right? And rode in on a horse? And changed costumes 324908234 times? And he USED to be gay so that turns you on?

Yes, we know Of Montreal is the s**t..

It was just such a party, I knew nothing of their music before tonight and you can officially call me a fan. I had absolutely no problem with the skits or the loungey music they would play in between costume changes. Everything sounded wonderful and every costume change got better and better. The band itself is very tight, they know what theyre doing. I saw a shitload of Prince in Of Montreal, as well as Classic Michael Jackson (more than once I thought it was the start of an MJ cover). It feels as if they were making skits to fit all the costumes and props they had, not the other way around. I LOVED how it would go from catchy fun pop to spacey psychedelics to pure dance crazyness to a combination of all three of those! Sensory overload at its finest and exactly what I love about live music. I approve of everything about Of Montreal, those fuckers know how to party.

The Fiery Furnaces were decent enough, it started off very fun and interesting but by the half-way mark it was just so exhausting. They made me want to sit down. If I was lounging around somewhere I would've enjoyed them a bit more. Curious choice to have as an opening band. Again, they werent awful but they just kinda sucked away life juice.

ZOMG I forgot about the horse. That was sooo cool. Kevin Barnes' dancing and frolicking and general awesomeness is so infectious.

I also totally painted my face tonight with all my friends. I still have it on too! Pictures MAY come ;)

Just saw The Gin Blossoms at the Mesa Arts Center.
Good show, they sounded great.
Nice to walk down memory lane with all those radio hits from the early to mid 90's.
Took my 8 year old. His first show & he loved it.

Earlier in the week I got invited by my buddies at the New Times, to a private Jack Daniels party at the Venue of Scottsdale. Special guest was the Verve Pipe. Fun time...free Jack & free show!
