The same exact set as your show. Clarity sounded perfect; i don't think i've ever gotten so many goosebumps at a show before. It was great to finally hear No Sensitivity. With the amount of time they had to play (and assuming they must always play The Middle) it would have been nearly impossible for that show to be any better than it was.

It's gonna be pretty tough for M83 to top last night....

Not as heavy as Tool, more funky/jazzy. They're a really eclectic band so it's not just one genre or anything. There were moments when they improvised and it was just straight up jazz. They teased few a Tool covers from Undertow. Swamp Song and Prison Sex if I remember correctly. Danny's solos were mindblowing.

or park down on the side streets around the fonda. east of vine. and walk a few blocks. that's what i do. you probably can't actually park on hollywood during that time. i know a lot of major streets are no parking from 3 am to 5 am every day. lame.

Word out on the street is that U2 is playing the Belly-Up Tavern next week or in two weeks (in Solana Beach). Most likely this Sunday. I'm sure someone here would know something about this if it was true. I wouldn't believe it usually but I've heard it now from multiple people here... so I'm think it may actually be real.

If it does happen though, and I found out the night, I'll probably go over there and check it out from the outside, just to say I did it... could be kind of fun... it's right up the street from me and it's not like I'll have much better to do on a weekday night anyway.

Got my connection checking on it. I'll post here if I find out either way.

thats a lie. i lived on cahuenga and franklin for 3 years and there were shootings all the time, stabbings and a whole bunch of other junk. park on dix, a half block north of franklin, check franklin between vine and cahuenga, or check franklin east of vine.

the area is getting better but watch out for anyone that looks shady, also watch out for the homeless people living in the vacant lot that use to be a gas station as they often harass people, oh and watch out for the prostitute in the same area, she gives head behind the dumpster, i use to see it out my window every night.

and the parking under the 101 is only until 10pm, it use to be 24 hours but there were too many people in rv's smoking crack so they put up a sign until 10. also watch if you park your car on franklin if you dont have a car alarm as the homeless will bust out your back windows.

no, i meant sunset....if you're lucky you can find parking between hollywood and sunset, but because of the fonda and the other smaller clud that's actually on el centro, as well as the gym that's right there, it's tough....south of sunset though there's always parking

I've walked it tons of times, it's like 5-7 mintues to walk el centro/sunset to the avlaon, no biggie

BLVD @ Canes w/ Break Science feat. Adam Deitch & Vokab Kompany (ding ding ding LOCAL GROUP!)
Wednesday, March 11 at 9 p.m.
Canes Bar & Grill
3105 Ocean Front Walk, Mission Beach
Tickets $10

Vokab Kompany; founded in San Diego in 2007, fathered by Emcees/singers Robbie aka Rob Hurt and Matt Burke-y (baybe). These guys came together, having known each other from their Tahoe, CA high school days. Each had his own music endeavor in the years leading up to Vokab’s commencement, but ever since collaborating on VK’s debut Liquid Language, 2007 they have been focused on releasing the second album, out in April/May this year, thoughtfully dubbed, The New Kong. Vokab not yet signed, but strongly independent, is really coming into its own. They are partnered with the very talented band TSG (Tonight’s Special Guest), bringing years of musical experience and diversity to the Vokab Kompany’s brand of sound. A sound whose genre goes something like; hip-hop, soul, electro, funk. You have two Emcee’s who charge sped-up lyrical flows; made to sound effortless. Rob & Burkey have realized an impressive and seamless synergy with their voices and their lyrics are playfully vivacious and positive. Set those lyrics atop the 5 piece band, layered with creative electro beats and it makes for a very fun and a dance-worthy music experience. And if you still are standing still at one of their shows, there are a couple of talented ladies (Suze Q and Jenny Jen) putting go-go girlies to shame with their energetic moves.

This Wednesday...
If I didn't have to be up at 4:40am the next morning, I'd probably be going.
These guys put on one hell of a show (and my brother plays guitar in TSG).

CO has so many good shows this year.

outside of David Byrne/DeVotchka and Mogwai no..at least not yet anyways......those tickets for Depeche and Cohen are ridiculous....and if KC is any indicator then Jane's/NIN will be stupid as well....I am hoping Mile High gets a good line up but even now with The Fray and WSP being a lock I don't see it...maybe Phish at Red Rocks will be great...

This is a documentary about the Good Life Cafe's legendary thursday open mic nights. It started in 89 and ended in 95. In this film you can witness the origins of acts like Jurassic 5, Freestyle Fellowship, Medusa, Pigeon John, and more.
To celebrate its release we will be doing a one time reunion show at the House Of Blues Tuesday, March 10th. I will be performing classic songs from that period with fellow lifers such as Chali 2na, Hymnal, Mixmaster Wolf, and Blackbird. If you're interested in checking out the scene I came from, this is it. It was the best time of my life.

I did. You saw some great acts. Disappointed you missed the Mae Shi, because I'm certain you'd fall in love, but still. HEALTH are becoming monsters live. They are so goddamn tight.

i don't get the the boners you guys get over loud music? what about it makes it so cool?

I like loud music live because it's very physical, but also just because I like loud, aggressive music in general. There's just something about a really intense, sustained drag of noise that is both visceral and, when done right, very impressive artistically. Hell, I like it when it isn't done right sometimes just because it's fun to hear, but a good loud band that can fully control and use the noise rather than just play it is amazing.

03-10-2009, 02:06 PM
I didn't skip the mae shi, they were one of the first acts on friday and we were scrambling to drive up there and set up camp in time.

Deerhunter was phenomenal. The first half of the set was their more "normal" sounding songs but with his crazy cool vocals but right around when they played "Nothing Ever Happened" is when the set turned a corner. It just got so psychedelic, and electric and intense. My mind was pulsating when they finished, and it was only a 45 minute set!

Holy Fuck were kind of awesome too. They sort of (very sort of) reminded me of Animal Collective, but just a very tiny bit

have you ever seen a movie in a theater with the surround cranked? you FEEL it. your eyes process the visual...your ears process the sound...but your body feels it. you become engulfed in the experience.

if you're not into the band, it's just annoying as fuck....but if you're in...it's like going to 11.

for me, it was kinda like that.

(and in the interest of full disclosure...my relationship with loud has changed over the last few months as tinnitus has begun to rear its ugly head....i guess the kings of convenience had it right with quiet is the new loud)

TV Tunez Tonight starring Gloria Loring
at Henry Fonda Music Box Theatre - Hollywood, CA
$35.00 - $55.00

Well known for three television theme songs, singer-actress Gloria Loring, in association with Maybe It's Today Productions, is creating and starring in a celebration of television's best theme songs, TV Tunez Tonight. World premiere of the show will be Sunday, March 22, 2009 at The Music Box @ Fonda in Hollywood.

TV Tunez Tonight celebrates television's best theme songs, drawn from sit-coms and dramas to westerns, sci-fi, sports, game shows and commercials. Along with Loring's "Friends and Lovers" and "Facts of Life", the show will feature music from High School Musical, Popeye, Peter Gunn, American Bandstand, Brady Bunch, Petticoat Junction, and the Olympics, to name just a few sources. This music resonates with everyone and was composed by some of the world's greatest musicians: Henry Mancini, John Williams, Quincy Jones, Count Basie, and Dave Brubeck. Audience involvement, user video clips from fans, surprise guests and the requisite sing-alongs will be part of the theatrical experience. Five-time Emmy Award-winning art director René Lagler will design the production.

LA times says Throbbing Gristle has canceled UCLA appearance but still making it to Coachella..

Coachella act Throbbing Gristle confirms, then cancels UCLA Live show
06:25 PM PT, Mar 10 2009

Earlier today, UCLA Live announced a Throbbing Gristle concert for April 21 at Royce Hall, a show that the industrial noise-makers had already eluded to weeks ago on their website.

A mere two hours after confirmation, a UCLA Live representative has informed Pop & Hiss that the show has been canceled. Although the band did not officially state the reason, it's most likely because of a conflict with the outfit's already scheduled appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 19. The Indio music festival is known for employing so-called radius clauses that restrict artists from playing in the marketplace for a specified amount of time before and after the three-day fete. Living legend Leonard Cohen has been this season's one lone exception to the rule. Representatives from Throbbing Gristle and Coachella have not yet returned requests for a comment on the band's cancellation, but Pop & Hiss will happily update with any responses.

UCLA Live had been reportedly sitting on the news release for weeks, waiting for confirmation from TG's representation, which finally came this morning. The UCLA Live rep expressed some frustration over the quick cancellation: "We're embarrassed that this happened."

Genesis P-Orridge and company was due to play a different set for the UCLA Live showcase, a live soundtrack to the rare, experimental Derek Jarman film, "In the Shadow of the Sun." Jarman, who made videos for The Smiths and Pet Shop Boys, asked the band to create a soundscape for his Super-8 collage in 1980. A similar performance of the soundtrack filled Tate Modern's Turbine Hall in London in 2006. Jarman died in 1994.

As outlined on the band's website, the Coachella appearance is to be a "60 minute set from across TG's history." The industrial revolutionaries are also due to play shows in New York, Chicago and San Francisco in April.

Yup. Super lame. It was emerging as the best set I've seen them perform in the 4 I've been to over the past year. That's following up their most disappointing set for me at Detour. Wonder if people are hanging around to see if they let them still perform the DJ set. Tonight was great, but a bummer. I might have to try & go tomorrow night now. Matt & Kim were good too. It was great to at least hear Cut Copy play Autobahn Music Box as well as the two new tracks, Sands of Time & ?

I was wondering that myself.

On a more important note:

People of Los Angeles, Akron/Family are playing the Steve Allen Theatre tonight, and tomorrow. Put quite simply, you owe it to yourself to go. Not only is it only $17 to go, but last night's show was quite simply one of the most exhilarating concerts I've ever been to. It was a joyful shout. And the Steve Allen theater is the smallest, most intimate venue I've ever been to, and definitely one of the most unique, as well. The show was also loud as fuck; at times it felt like what it might have been like to see The Velvet Underground in their heyday. if I didn't have Beck tonight, I'd be going all three days; honestly I was tempted to do so anyway, that's how good it was.

and what happens when my predictions for headliners come true: Bowie, Daft and Radiohead? What then?

Is Club 1650 still open? That was a great show.

Does he already have a scheduled show the Saturday of Coachella?

I found his CA dates. He is in ONT on April 17th and in Saskatoon (EW!) on April 20th.

And this is bad cause you have to sit on the troubadour stage for like 3 hours before they come on, not counting the hours spent in line out front right Frank?

Why are you missing Asobi this time Frank?

Well, LA once, SD once, and somewhere behind the orange curtain once. But at least there is still their set at Coachella. Oh wait...

Guess I gotta pay double to see them open for Yann Tiersen.

Why don't you see them on Monday the 16th at the Detroit Bar?
