Hey Blackswan...I downloaded Elbow's discography last night...listened to Asleep in the Back...but which is their best cd?

BlackSwan
03-23-2009, 04:47 PM
Getting into Elbow can be complicated... thing is, a lot of their songs aren't upbeat so you really need to get into their sound and Guy Garvey's style before you can really enjoy them. When I first started listening to them I would only like a handful of songs from the album, but as I listened to them more and more, I soon came to love every song.

I'd suggest listening to Seldom Seen Kid or Leaders of the Free World first. Important tracks to pay attention to the first listens are Bones of You, Grounds for Divorce and One Day Like This (SSK) and Forget Myself, Leaders of the Free World, and Mexican Standoff (LofFW). All their albums are great, but the first two are slightly more subdued.

To answer you question though, I like all of their albums equally, but Seldom Seen Kid got the best response from music critics.

Nothing but silence except this...

Do you look forward to touring with this album?

Yes, I already put together a band. We’ve actually booked a Scandinavian tour at the end of March. We’ll start here around Stockholm and hopefully take it further during spring and summer, and hopefully to the States as well.

yes. some songs from their 1996 album, and i'm pretty sure the entire upcoming album was played last night. new stuff sounded bonkers, i need a leak ASAP. what a magical creature. she mentioned that they'd be back in June.

That's pretty much the reason I didn't go. I LOVE her, and love her album with John Parish, but with the cost of tickets, driving up there, school the next day, etc. I would rather have her own show playing her solo material.

*gasp*!?! GORGEOUS photo... I took a bazillion I have to filter thru em yet to see if there's many worth sharing with the world. That said, the world could never have enough images of this lovely specimen of the human race.

One of the main things I love about this artist is that she is seriously an 'artist' and you never know what you're going to get. You just know that it's going to be new and bound to challenge you in a good way. I'd have been disappointed to sit through another rendition of 'Down by the Water'... did you hear her say after the show "see you in June" ?!?! I almost shed tears of joy. I got the 'California Killed Me' tshirt she was selling at the merch booth yay! For the White Chalk show there was no merch which sucked. The few random people I ended up talking to all traveled from Seattle and Portland to see this. It was a special night indeedy.

I've only gotten around to uploading one video (http://www.flickr.com/photos/xxxxxjenny/3382225135/)... must get back to work for now.

Bizarre 80s infomercial for fake gold jewelry called Santo Gold

WFMU's Beware of the Blog presents the strange saga of Santo Gold. It was some kind of fake gold jewelry, and the guy who invented it also produced a movie (Blood Circus) that plugged Santo Gold. The infomercial for Santo Gold is delightfully baffling.

Santo Gold The inexplicable film was about aliens who came to earth and got involved with wrestlers and battled cannibals -- and also featured Rigatuso himself as a “real rock star” in a long concert segment singing "The Santo Gold Theme Song" (which he penned) in front of a dubbed screaming audience. The infomercial, in all it’s 80’s low-budget video editing-deck glory, obviously touts the chains and film and Rigatuso himself as the most amazing, earth shattering products and events ever, who’s availability will no doubt result in planet domination of historic proportions.

After Rigatuso failed to become the next Orsen Wells, he participated in even more brazen business ventures; a credit card for people with bad credit for only $49.95 (which turned out to be a paper card that was only redeemable for Santo Gold merchandise), and a very real radio pot touting a very fake offer to sell off $2000 blocks of a millionaire’s estate at $52 a piece. The law eventually tracked Rigatuso down and he ended up spending ten months in jail for mail fraud (the court proceedings were reportedly memorable).

I don't know if they do this at every show, but when I saw of Montreal they stopped letting people on the floor, even if they had tickets. There was plenty of room too. They were forced to stand on the outer platform. They may have changed this, but I would show up early just to make sure you get a good spot.

I'll be at the midnight show. Are cameras allowed into Club Nokia?

No Prince show allows cameras. I actually think he hires secret service agents to monitor. If they catch you they will take you out back and kick your ass. The only venue out of the 3 that you prob can even think of using one is Nokia Theatre since it's so big.

They played two years ago. Atlas sound was there last year.

So, guess what? Ezra Buchla, the original singer for the Mae Shi, played with them tonight for the first time since he left. It was awesome. They did four songs off Terrorbird, and Jeff was smiling from cheek to cheek (he's the only original member left in the movie). They had their typical high level of energy, played three new songs, and generally just tore the smell a new one. But seeing Ezra with them was special. Very very special. Also, the singer from Pre was pretty damn topless at one point.

The Crystal Method's website lists their SF venue as the Warfield.

http://www.thecrystalmethod.tickets.musictoday.com/TheCrystalMethod/calendar.aspx

Edit:

TCM is currently holding a pre-sale for their fan club, which is free to sign up for, and it lists Warfield tix as GA and $45 + $2.50 facility fee. But it doesn't say anything about the Prodigy, also their calendar doesn't have the Seattle show listed (but has the date free between Portland and Vancouver).

fikus222

So I am of mixed opinion about Ratatat tonight. The opening act, Think About Life, was pretty good. We ignored the second act, Despot, only because we were talking outside.

When Ratatat came on we had to deal with the underagers pushing their way through the solid crowd and then we had to contend with the drunks trying to push their way through too. Stupid oblivious space invaders.

Musically Ratatat was pretty damn good, though the order of their songs left something to be desired. The most blatant discrepancy was their encore; they played two of their slowest songs as such. We were like WTF, this is how you are going to end the show?

Overall, I liked the show, but all Showbox venues attract stupid crowds and they all employ lame ass security who have delusions of grandeur. Seattle, you are no substitute for the SF Bay Area.

We were literally about to get handed a set-list and the security guards freaked out and started pushing the barricades into us, which pretty much says it all about our evening.

Overall, I liked the show, but all Showbox venues attract stupid crowds and they all employ lame ass security who have delusions of grandeur. Seattle, you are no substitute for the SF Bay Area.

i havent been to a seattle show but sf shows are shitty. i saw mika at the warfield and when he was playing a piano ballad people were jumping up and down with their elbows out. and drunk kids would just push you in the back of the neck to get through. i hate bay area shows unless its at slims.

That's odd, because every artist that I have ever seen coming off an LA gig has expressed how grateful they are to be out of LA and in the Bay. Though, people suck no matter what the geographic region.

The Showbox venues are terrible. I'm glad it is very very rare I want to see acts that play there. Now that the Croc is back I'm pretty happy with the options... Between Neumos, Chop Suey, Croc, Josephine, Lo-Fi, and Healthy Times there are plenty of low/mid tier shows all the time. I can ignore the garbage venues....

I'm pretty sure they use cookie-cutter phrases for most cities when opening. "We're so happy to be back in LA", "This has been the best crowd on the tour", etc. etc. etc.

It's all BS.

It's normally all GA but I believe this show will more than likely have a GA floor with a seated balcony and in this case if your bringing Erin you may want to get seats in the upper balcony. LOGE being the best.

It's usually all standing GA. Sometimes they put out what I can only classify as folding chairs, but the pit remains standing GA for those shows as well.

Not really, you simply have to show up a few hours before the doors open and wait in line. Usually the first 100 people in line get a wristband for the pit and thats it.

and most artists that come to LA say how great it is to be in in LA from wherever they just came from...

plus LA gets a bad rap because most stand and watch with their arms crossed, which i love, no one running into you, and having the ability to just watch the show.

i have no idea why, but when Mastodon and Against Me coheadlined 2 years ago at the Wiltern, my brother and I got there just after the first band started. The place already had a ton of people in it, but we just decided to walk up front as far as we could...and ended up walking right into the pit! I don't know if they were doing it by ticket numbers or if the majority of the people there just didn't realize they could do it, but it was amazing. The pit was probably less than 1/2-capacity ALL NIGHT too, even though the whole venue was totally packed. one of the most amazing nights ever

To top it all off, my brother won a drawing for an Epiphone guitar signed by all the members of Mastodon and AM. We had already left the venue when he got a call on his cell...I promptly flipped a mean bitch and hauled ass back to the venue where they gave him the guitar and took Photos. What a crazy cool night

Ha ha ha, yeah that may be a problem, or just find some website that will let you write about the show, it has been pretty successful for me so far this year.

Already got approvals for the rakes, the get up kids, the bird and the bee, tinted windows, friendly fires, travis, and art brut. Hopefully I will get the metric approval as I just sent my request out.

It's a good view. There is no "rail" at the wiltern. If you're at the front of the pit, you have your arms on the stage. When Hot Chip played last year, they actually let people climb on stage as they were nearing the end of the set. Our very own Hopeless Semantic was on that stage rockin' his Obama hippy shirt.

The stage is kind of high, yes. I sometimes forget that fact because I'm pretty tall, so it doesn't bother me. But even if you are average height or somewhat shorter, it shouldn't be a problem. I've seen little girls draping their arms on the stage and gazing at the "hawt boyz" many times.

Depends on the band. Sometimes there is a barrier in front of the stage, sometimes not. There can be a gap of up to 5 feet between the barrier and the stage. Expect the barrier for any punk, metal, hard rock, etc.

The stage IS high. If you are short at all, you may get a stiff neck looking up. It's worth it though, I guess.

FINAL FANTASY!!!

Whelans, 29th May.

Booya, baby. I love Whelans. For a venue, it's the perfect size, shape and sweatiness for my liking.

Mewithoutyou Summer dates.

Jun 23 Slim’s San Francisco, California
I might man up and go see them, finally. The Dear Hunter is opening, so that should be wretched. The crowd should blow, as well.

Me tooooooo :)

There is a rail at the wiltern depending on the show.

What's the view like from the rail at the Wiltern? Every show I've ever caught there has had people camping out since noon for rail. Getting a pit wristband shouldn't be too hard, but for Metric it is rail or nothing.

I've been up against the rail, and what I would say makes the Wiltern different than most venues is that the stage is a good deal higher up. I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse, but in comparison to say, the Fonda, the Wiltern stage is about 1.5x higher.

Edit: Already been covered. Sorry for the repetition.

pretty much anywhere in that bottom pit is great boourns. They don't fill it up too much so you'd be fine. Also, being in the front on the second tier may be even better. You are pretty much looking straight into the band's eyes.
