not sure how to put this without sounding like a pompous old geezer, but here goes:
I've been listening to rock music for longer -- much longer -- than most of you people have been alive. I saw the 70s, survived disco, saw punk and new wave come and go, I saw the emergence of the underground/alternative/indie rock stuff in the 80s. I listened to REM before their first album came out. what you hear as history, I lived. I was there. I was there. I can tell a fad or a gimmick from the real deal. And, to my ears at least, Radiohead are one of the greatest bands ever. Beatles/Who/Clash/Talking Heads territory.
Thank you, and have a nice day.

I love Radiohead, and my opinion of them is that they are a great band. Thom Yorke and the gang are extremely talented, they write intelligent, beautiful, and poignant lyrics. They have indeed developed a unique sound.
Now, it's entirely someone's opinion on whether or not they are a great band. However, even if you don't like them, you can't deny that they are indeed an influential band and have made a significant impact on music we listen to. They are a very important band.

Look, Radiohead just doesn't do it for me. (Like Brad Pitt.) I don't see the hype, I don't see the big deal. They sound just like every late 90s British rock band to me. I think they're a tad overrated and people are so quick to laud them as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Granted, labeling any band "The Best" is a very subjective thing to do, and no one should expect every single person on the face of the earth to immediately agree with them. The thing I'm getting at here is that everyone is so quick to be defensive and stick me as the mindless harlot with no musical taste and proclaim their intellectual superiority. Honestly, no musical taste? If I had no musical taste, I wouldn't be here; I'd be watching MTV and dancing around to 'Soldja Boy' and going to see Plain White Ts in concert.
Back to my point, though.
I, personally, do not see the big deal with Radiohead. Until someone proves me otherwise instead of saying "ZOMG YOU'RE AN IDIOT I DONT HAVE TO EXPLAIN IT TO YOU LOL GO BE A DIRTY WHORE LIKE THE SKANK YOU ARE" I will stand by my position.
And for the record, I love it how when a girl gets defensive of something that goes against the general consensus, she's called a "bitch." What's it called when a guy does it? Fuck you all and your gender stereotyping.
thelastgreatman
12-06-2007, 04:21 PM
What kind of proof would you like, hobag? Take the karma police litmus test--that's about as good of "proof" as one can have. Some people don't like The Beatles either. Those people, like yourself, are tuneless philistines.
Oh, and you're completely wrong about the gender thing, because we've all been reaming Passive about his knee-jerk bullshit rejection of Radiohead for ages, and he's a guy. Sort of.

Your personality is what's awful, not your gender. If you were a guy, you would still suck. But if it makes you feel any better: you're a bastard.
As for Radiohead, what do you want us to do? We say they're a great band, you disagree. You're obviously set in your views. How do we prove it to you? Is there some math equation that will just equal Radiohead really is great? If you don't hear it, you don't hear it.
PassiveTheory
12-06-2007, 04:36 PM
The one thing that gets me is the stigma when you say you don't like Radiohead; I respect what they've done for music, you can't find many bands that don't claim them as an influence (I mean, fuck, Panic! At the Disco covers them live, and the only skew larger than that would be if a Kanye West-popularity level rapper used Paranoid Android as the backbeat for a single), etc. But regardless of saying that, all of you just associate me with "guy who hates Radiohead", so it's like trying to talk constructively with a brick wall.

I hate brit-pop (fuck Oasis, fuck Verve, fuck early Blur). I don't really care for Radiohead's first two albums either (which lean in that direction). But OK Computer on is a different story. I don't agree with kitt kat on everything she's saying, for fuck sake. Can we make that clear?... I think you, Randy, NMH, et. all get annoyed when I lob all Radiohead fans into the category of "those Radiohead fans", and the same is true regarding her views vis a vis my views... I recognize Radiohead's influence and respect what the band's done. I just don't think they're the best band currently, in the last 10 years, or ever, and that's a point of contention with Radiohead's biggest fans (like Sasha, who acts like she has Thom Yorke's dick shoved up her ass all the time).

I hate it when people go "but it's opinion!" EVERYTHING is opinion. There is nothing in our very subjective existence that is not a matter of opinion. Some people are of the opinion that Radiohead isn't that great; others are of the opinion that Jews should die and niggers should be enslaved. And both groups are equally fucked in the head. =)

this thread is so stupid to begin with. you people argue for radiohead like it's some fucking philosophical debate. they're a BAND. not a cure for cancer.
they're good in my opinion. and that's enough for me.
I'm not contradicting myself shit for brains. Stop defaulting to taste. I'm simply talking about the appreciation of pushing a technical artform forward. disliking Radiohead is not per se stupid. I could list out here half a dozen criticisms of their work that would be valid grounds. I don't share that opinion, but I could understand it.
but claiming, as nitt wit does, that "People who love Radiohead so much are blinded by the fact that their music is nothing special and their new album was nothing but a clever marketing gimmick" is stupid. it suggests that those of us who love radiohead have been hoodwinked by some scam marketing scheme. that we're not smart enough to know that we've been had. It's a condescending, arrogant statement from someone who has not demonstrated she has the chops to back it up. and that, I think, explains the visceral reaction to her idiotic spewings.

Yes, yes. I don't mind that much if people don't like Radiohead; one of my best friends doesn't get them, he's listened to all of the albums but Kid A and probably In Rainbows. But he's reasonable about it, and so it isn't a problem. But with statements like the one above, about In Rainbows marketing gimmick, statements that compare the Radiohead faithful to cavemen who are impressed by bright lights or something, yes, that is annoying.

I don't hate Radiohead, I've just never liked them. I've definitely possessed a lot of hate towards particular fans of the band (and wrongfully generalized this hate to account for all of their fans), but I've never hated the band itself. I do admit hating that the band's headlining placement at Coachella 04 set a negative precedent that I plain disliked, but not the band itself.

Sort of. It's really concerning how, at Coachella 04, there weren't any real feasible alternatives during Radiohead's time slot (MSI was the only notable one), and I feel it would put an end to the trend started this year (with bands like Gogol Bordello, Infected Mushroom, Blonde Redhead, LCD Soundsystem playing against bands like Bjork, RATM, and RHCP) in regards to variety. I want to see a band because either I'm curious or really want to see a band, but if 04' is anything to go by, should Radiohead headline 08' I just don't want them to be the only stomachable option to see at the time, that's all.
