having a new year party at work, and i've blagged the DJ slot from 12-1.

i need help figuring out a playlist that will suit most tastes while still being awesome.

my one idea i have is to start with millenium prayer by cliff richard (for giggles), followed by...god is a dj, maybe? dunno...

hit me with your ideas.

oh ok. so you're not really a dj, you just get to pick the music for a while?

romantic notions of turntables aside...what's the difference?

i just want a decent party!

the difference is, if you're a "DJ" and asking what you should play, you need more practice. if your gonna "pick" music for a party and you're asking what would be best, that there is a good question.

sorry i got all crazy. i was assuming you had a setup you were gonna bring and all that good stuff.

I'm "DJING" the New Years Party I'm gonna be at. More accurately we're gonna be in the middle of nowhere with no tv/radio so I'm gonna make a mix that we'll start exactly at 11pm and so at 11:59:50 or something there will be a countdown coming through the speakers. The first hour is gonna be solid gold rap hits that everyone loves and I think right after midnight it's gonna be "auld lang syne" into "Music Sounds Better With You" and then a bunch of uptempo jamz everyone loves.

woot

I remember that song. You could continue on that theme with the Lords of Acid song (something to do with p****).

Too bad your quasi DJ career is over within a couple years.

For you to still be so ignorant this late in the game as to believe that vinyl in and of itself makes the DJ then all I have is pity for you. It also confirms you don't make or at least edit your own music too so that's another sign of your last gasp.

Go take stock of all your heroes and see how many are still using vinyl.

I have never and will never consider myself a DJ, but Jack just made me realize how easy it would be to produce your own music, using some midi program and midi controller, record it onto CDs and the use CD tuntables (or what ever the correct term for them is) to mix your sounds together. That would be fun. I have a midi control and have made a few songs using "garage band", when I have more time I want to experiment with this.

you should tell me where and when i can watch you play. that way, i can see someone put these programs to good use.

I don't use a laptop. at least not yet.

I do use CDJs though and make good use of the live looping and cueing and other features you don't have. I don't need a 16 bar house beat to mix two songs. I've also played music I've produced myself. Not every track I play was made by someone else on a heavy piece of plastic I paid $10 for and lugged around in a 25lbs bag.

That said, I don't claim to be any better than the armies of DJ's that inhabit this city, but I can claim to be more knowledgeable than you about how many pro's do it. At our events I'm often in charge of accommodating the headliners' gear, and I can tell you that vinyl only performers have become the minority.

i never suggested you were better or worse than anyone, nor did i suggest i was better or worse than anyone. my preffering is vinyl. simple as that.

I have nothing against anyone's preferred format. Your last sentence in your first post just sounded very accusatory towards CDJs, serato (which to be honest I can't stand either) or "other bunk ass software".

Daft Punk stood up there a couple years ago and shoved a software set up everyone's ass and those people haven't shut the fuck up about it since.

Complaining about technology is like complaining about the weather.

I'm off now to see Diplo and Krafty Kuts spin some CDs.

daft punk throwing down a good software set is like alice deejay spinning a good vinyl set. i couldnt care less for either. you still havent figured out that i dont have a problem with cd's or program usage. i have a problem with people depending on them and letting the craft go to shit.

edit: what i mean about their sets is that i dont like either ones music. i could respect the mixing and programing and all, but cant dig the music, so i couldnt care less for either. not that they suck. and yes i specifically said other bunk ass programs, but that was in the heat of the moment. ill be more careful.
