Go to Sam Wo restaurant. They're in China Town and open until 4 in the morning. They have really good pan fried noodles with BBQ pork, and the prices are amazing.
Also, I think I prefer their Amoeba to LAs. They have more rare material, and a more obscure selection.

Cliff House Restaurant - Breakfast. Order the turnovers with the orange marmalade and coffee.
Japanese Tea Garden - Golden Gate Park. Sit down, relax, and enjoy a pot of Takaokaya tea. Walk accross the road and jump in with a group of people excercising ala tai chi.
Fiddler's Green - Walk in, look directly to your right, put money in the juke box (Dirty old Town), order a black and tan. Relax.
Coit Tower - Take in a beautiful view of the city. Ice cream truck outside in parking lot.
Lombard Street. Leave you car at the top of the hill on Leavenworth and walk down this street. Anyone can pass by with a car.
Blue and Gold - Take this boat from Pier 39 under the Golden Gate Bridge and around Alcatraz. Don't go to Alcatraz. Walk down to Fishman's Wharf. The crab cakes from Tarantino's are good with a beer.
Columbus Ave - Walk around this old neighborhood....

while i would agree everyone at some point in their lives, needs to go to the Cliff House (some places you just have to go to around the world), i think it is really overpriced .... i have spent $100's there trying to impress my lady ..... $75 apiece on the nice dinner is not outrageous, but it aint cheap per person .... here is a cool link though, that has a vid and shows how cool the place is ... if you go, be sure to go down to the odd little store they have downstairs ... canx**

Blondie's Pizza and Johnny Foley's Irish Pub in Union Square are fantastic. There is also this cool Irish Pub on Haight & Ashbury, I'll have to see if I have any matchbooks at home with the name of it.
The Cliff House's food/drink menu for dinner is much better than their breakfast/brunch menu but the view during the day is pretty spectacular. Get their 32 oz. Ribeye, 18 oz. Kobe, or lobster/crab dish if they still have them.
If you go to The Stinking Rose you must have the garlic prime rib. There is also a place in the Fillmore area near all of the bars called Pizza Orgasmica that is open late and is especially good after a night of heavy drinking.

Pizza is not good here. Lil' Wang's right.
Stinking Rose is overpriced and not that great. Even though I had a delightful time there with Schoolohoo.
Foley's food is just eh but for some reason I end up going there every time people are in town. It smells like beer and they have a terrible band in there on weekends that play Phil Collins and Eagles covers for all the tourists. It's near the downtown hotels though so it's convenient. If you're in Union Square you should go to Farmer Brown instead of Foley's.

I've also seen him biking around in the morning in a nice Adidas track suit with a nice backpack full of branches to construct his bush.
Za Pizza is pretty good. That's about it for SF pizza places that I find alright.
Blondies is pretty bad...however, they do have huge FRIED CHICKEN AND WATERMELON combo meal signs everywhere during the summer. I'm pretty sure people only go there because it's at the Powell cable turnaround and next to Rasputin.
Stinking Rose is good. But it does not even crack my top 20 restaurants in North Beach, so I'll probably never go back.
If you're in Union Square, instead of going to Farmer Brown, you should get on a bus or grab a cab and go to anywhere other than Union Square for night life.

That's actually what I mean. Gentrification is happening so frequently in most of these historically "bad" areas that they're no longer as dangerous as they once were. I wouldn't have spent time around LA skid row a few years ago, but now I go to warehouses down there fairly frequently.

Look dude, I'm with you in general, lord knows I've spent a disproportionate amount of time in really bad areas, but your position here is just fucking daft. Let me give you an example:
A friend of mine used to live right at the corner of 7th and Los Angeles. This kid was soft, not cut out for living down there, and I kept trying to tell him so but he claimed he liked the seediness of it. Until he heard that one of his friends from his building had been stabbed with a hypodermic needle the other night just walking home down 7th.
Completely unprovoked. Random crazy homeless junkie had just reached out and plunked his used needle into the dude's leg. Do you know why it's best for people to not adhere to your philosophy? Because if they happen to be one of the rare cases of unusually bad shit happening to them while in those areas, the consequences aren't always something they can get back.
Is something bad going to happen to everyone who goes down there? No. That doesn't mean precaution isn't a good idea. Crack Alley isn't exactly a safe place to chill.

See Devendra Banhart's free show at Amoeba on Haight. You can't get much more hippie than that.

This thread makes me wretch.
On the subject of Pizza:
Amici's is good, but overpriced and pretentious as fuck.
Little Star (either location) is OK, but also somewhat expensive.
Georgio's on Clement is great NY style pizza.
Blondie's? whatever. It's not that good.
Orgasmica in the Richmond is pretty good.
Patxi's in Hayes Valley is good deep dish (which is saying something since I'm a NYer and am generally opposed to deep dish)
That said, don't fucking come to SF and eat pizza. That's retarded.
SF is best at thai, sushi, and vietnamese.
Thai: Thep Phanom on Fillmore & Waller
Sushi: I'm not fucking telling you.
Vietnamese: Tu Lan on Crack Alley
And there are no fucking hipster homeless in the Tenderloin. Those people are fucking legit scum. The only fake homeless people in SF are the asshole dirtry pseudo-hippie scum rich kids in the upper haight who heckle you for not giving them money and invariably drag some poor dog around. I fucking hate those little shits.
And forget Amoeba if it's any trouble to get there. It's really not that big a deal.

I usually find nothing I'm looking for at Amoeba on Haight, it's incredibly picked-through. It's pretty fun to browse though if you're not from a big city. The one in Berkeley is less picked-through but I really prefer Rasputin.
Paxtis is gross Jack. Their pizza is a fucking souffle. It's good for like two bites.

and Tu Lan can be soooooooooooooooo delicious but I'm relatively certain I got food poisoning from their shrimp fried rice the last time I ate there. I'm working back towards being able to smell and digest Tu Lan again.

Alright well I'll admit I've only been there when wasted but I've actually enjoyed it, and I'm really fucking picky about pizza. You're from closer to chicago than I am so I'll yield to your deep dish opinion, but it's actually really good when eaten cold the next day.

There's really nothing you could ever say that would come even remotely close to disparaging Tu Lan's reputation.
Stop trying.
They make the rice in the stairwell for fuck's sake. Do you really think you're going to change anyone's opinion of it?

I am going to look into Georgio's and Orgasmica with your endorsement. I'm a far bigger fan of NY style than Chicago.

hahaha
They've got Julia Child on the menu!
Believe me, before my last experience I would sell my soul for Tu Lan. It must have been a fluke. Haven't seen a cockroach there since I took Nando.

Sure, but do you want to go hang out at 4th-7th Ave south of Los Angeles St?
Errr, fuck no.
And to reply to whomever was saying "oh places like Downtown LA aren't bad at night. You all are a bunch of pansies," let me tell you something. (I know that Randy will have a field day with this, but I'll continue nonetheless.)
I was waiting somewhere on 6th street downtown at around 5:30pm about a year ago with my friend. We almost got fucking raped by this big sketchy Mexican scumball. He came up behind us, covered our mouth, and dragged us about 30 ft before our wriggling and biting and kneeing of the groin region became too much. We dropped our shopping bags (we had been out all day and could care less about whatever we had bought at that point) and ran nearly 10 blocks west until we reached a movie set what had closed down most of the street. We found some crew members and a cop who ended up giving us a ride home. Yeah, downtown LA is a super safe place to be a night.

what's that pizza place off of Columbus, I think it's near Columbus Cafe bar... they have the square slices of pizza and are open quite late. it's more like french bread pizzas, but good drunk food.

No, I still go downtown, but now that I have my car, it minimizes the "waiting on shady street corners waiting for the bus at odd hours" situation. Also, I just don't go east of the library much.

How did THAT happen? My word.
i took the 19 bus to UPS to pick up a motherboard, a power supply, a couple processors and some RAM I needed to build something, and geeky Brad got inbound and outbound confused because he hadn't been living there long enough. He also was too busy watching a movie on his iPod to notice that the bus was going south and not north.
