View Full Version : Please God, NO MORE HEINEKIN!

Coachella. One of, if not THE greatest music festival of our time. Every year a new genre bending line-up is assembled to blow our socks off. Its not only the diversity in music style though, but its also the range in band "popularity" that impresses me each year. (what other festival has ever had Madonna and Mogwai playing in the same time slot, eh?) It attracts some smaller "indy" bands whose tours normally take them through dive bars across america, as well as huge pop stars who could sell out stadiums on their own. This pioneering event strategy convinces 60,000 people to gather in the middle of the piping hot desert annually. How better to thank the patrons that have come from across the country and across the world then to offer them 12 delectable ounces of Heinekin or Heinekin Light for $7 a pop. I peronally love the taste of cat piss, so that first sip of Heinekin is always a highpoint. Why has Golden Voice sold its soul to Heinekin? A company that has a fucking interactive stock chart on their web page http://www.heinekeninternational.com/stockchartpage.aspx . Is it for money? Is heinekin really lining their pockets that deeply??? I cant buy that. GV would make ALOT more money if it offered some local beer from an independent southern california brewery. Shit, atleast offer us a choice this year, and you will see what people buy. If the logistics are too difficult to manage the local brew, atleast give us some variety. If it has to be a beer company that will offer you stock options, then diversify your portfolio. Stella? Bass? Corona? Newcastle? I DONT CARE. Just for the love of God, NO MORE HEINEKIN!!!!!!
(a 0.23 second search on google came up with these Los Angeles breweries...Alcatraz Brewing Co, Angel City Brewing, Bayhawk Ales, Belmont Brewing Co, etc)

Best beer I have ever had was at the Heineken brewery in Amsterdam. Worst beer I have had in the states has been Heineken. I like to drink beer to get drunk so I am fine with the watered down taste of Bud, coors, miller, light at coachella.

As much as I would like it if this were true, I don't think it's correct. Small local breweries aren't all going to have the marketing infrastructure/budget to offer the same sort of sponsorship package that Heineken can.

I could personally afford the thousand or so dollars it would cost to make a few dozen banners, which is essentially the extent of marketing that goes on at the festival by the beer sponsor. Call me an idealist, but I would hope the general interests of the patrons attending Coachella annually (this year will be my 5th) override whatever is included with Heinekins "sponsorship package" in Golden Voices' eyes.

I am operating under the assumption that they pay some unknown sum of money to Goldenvoice directly, for the privilege of being the sole beer-seller at the festival. That was the marketing budget of which I was speaking.

I was really pleasantly surprised/happy when I attended Pitchfork Music Festival last summer and they were selling varieties of local Chicago brew (Goose Island, I think?) for $4. But then again, Coachella is much bigger and has AEG as a parent company to answer to.

Real mixed drinks at Virgin Fest were one of the things I really prefered to Coach. And they had some fruity summer-ish kinda cocktail they claimed is their own concoction (I didn't recognize it as anything I've drank before, but rum and tequila and a bunch of juices I think probably) that was really nice in the heat. The taste of Heineken just doesn't go well with that heat if it goes with anything at all. Margaritas on the rocks would be good too. And a cabana. And titties.

Yep. There is an optimal point where the vodka taste gets canceled out by the Gatorade. You can down that like there is no tomorrow, and it absorbs into your system pretty quick. Good stuff. Some of my drunkest days have been because of that concoction.

Ill try that today. When my sis studied at new orleans she brought me a couple of fruit punch mixer bags from pat o bryans, the ones they used for the hurricane mix. Now that shit is a strong ass mix. You never felt the fucking rum. even if you're glass had more than half rum mixed. That mix got me fucked up a couple of times.

We'd all love more selection and lower prices, but what can you do? Every festival has a single distributor for booze, and that's how it is. And $7 might seem steep, but ever been to a major league baseball game? Paying $9 for a bud light makes a $7 heinie seem alright.

it looked like the best part of the VIP bar was its location right next to the main stage on the far side. i'm guessing there is not too much sound muffling and mixing from multiple stages over there. when you're in the other beer gardens, you hear three bands play at one time which made me want to drink my beer in one gulp and then immediately leave.

Its not 16, its 12. I'm not complaining about the price of the drinks, just the fact that it is heinekin. Its funny, ever since I started going to the festival, I eagerly anticipate the day that the line up is released on the website for two reasons. 1) to see what awesome bands I get to see and, 2) to hope not to see Heinekins fucking logo as the beer sponsor. If it HAS to be a big beer company, atleast switch it up every year! GV will make their money either way. Variety is the spice of life damnit!

Yeah last year I wanted to conserve my water so I drank almost an entire 24 pack of PBR from the time I woke up until the time I entered the festival. I get very hot and need to drink liquids and beer was the most readily available and coolest beverage.

Have you ever drank beer on a hot day and just became an angry drunk? This happens to me more times than not. There are too many other things going on at Coachella than for me to worry about any reprecussions from my drinking.
For the record, I'll drink just about any beer if there is nothing else to choose from. My preference in general is hefeweizen with a little salt and lemon. Mmm mmm good.

Yeah, we saw them a few months ago at an uppity grocery store. I've been planning to go back and get some but just haven't gotten around to it. It wouldn't surprise me if they started popping up more and more-some airlines in Europe are starting to use them rather than mini bottles for their liquor-they're cheaper for the airline and they weigh less-so it saves quite a bit of money on fuel.

goodbye income!
I've never had an alcoholic drink at, or before entering, coachella.
how sad.
i hope you're at least getting high, or something, or else you're just having WAY too much fun! :)~

"I only came here to do two things, kick some ass and drink some beer.
Looks like we're almost outta beer."
what a great movie!

i agree. heinekin is horrible, but definately better than coors light. i agree with the first poster that Bass would be a fantastic choice!
also, i don't understand why we have to stay in the beer garden and drink. why can't we walk around the entire festival?
also, has anyone been inside the VIP area? do they have other selections besides heinekin in there?
at Stagecoach they had the gardens, but you could walk wherever you wanted with the beer... they even had a bar in the Sahara (or whatever the Stagecoach-equivalent name would be)

Getting corralled into a drinking area might suck, but it's a lot nicer for the rest of us who don't want other people spilling beer on us during sets.
Undoubtedly it has nothing to do with GV trying to save you from getting beer spilled on you (pussy), and everything to do with controlling underage drinking.

There are better belgian beers than Stella. No one over there even drinks it, it is just another beer mass marketed to idiot north americans as a superior import beer when in fact it sucks.

To not understand why people would want to drink? Who is this person? Even if you're straightedge you still understand why people want to drink. Therein lies my disbelief.

I think we all understand why people want to drink. I don't understand the need to drink at Coachella when you factor in, prices, cages, heat, hydration, and the amount of fun you can have without drinking.
