Ok, that’s a deal … I sort of ramble and a lot of people don’t get what I am saying or more so how I post, but I have so many great memories, I will tell all one that really sticks in my mind .. original WS of course, but I have been thru that … I will finish it up at home and post it before the midnight hour … tnx again everyone for making me BMOTW ….. Colorado ron .. or cr**** (although I liked the Capt Ron thread a month or so ago lol ) ….
I still feel bad for that Capt. Ron thing, sorry I was real drunk and it was completely out of respect, but I mistook the Colorado Ron thing for Captain Ron.You and your wife have been nothing if not cool for the last week, answering all these silly questions for us.

ok, here is my story of a concert that I went to and made a great
memory for me ... I, as most of you know, went to the original Woodstock in
69 .... when the 25 year anniversary came about, I was married and had
obligations and couldn't go .... when Woodstock 99 came about I was
single and decided I couldn't pass up the 30th year anniversary ... I
already had plans to go to san Francisco the week before so I did that
trip .... after a week there I was to go back home and head out there .. I
didn't want to drive so I went to the ws board and tried to get a ride
from Denver to new York ... I met this one dude and he said, for sure I
could hitch a ride with him/them ... he and two of his buddies were
driving from los Angeles to the show .... I said great .. as we talked ,
he said they called themselves the rainbow guys ... humm , I said to
myself ... I really wanted a ride but to me, a rainbow bunch meant a bunch
of gay dudes .. now is don't care how you feel about that, it didn't
bother me but I wasn't sure if I could go all that way with a bunch of
gay dudes .. so I asked them straight out, so what's up with that ...
they had no clue as to what I was talking about ... I figured 3 dudes from
LA that called themselves the rainbow guys, but I was so wrong .. what
they were was three guys, one white, one Hispanic, and one black ... I
felt kind of foolish to say the least .... so we all agreed on meeting
at my house as they drove from LA ... so I went out to san Francisco
for a week of vacation and had a great time ... maybe too great of a
time ... as I was waiting for my place at SFO, I feel asleep .. only for
about an hour, but I missed my plane ... the airline was nice and put
me on the next plane , but it was the next morning ... I didn't have
their phone number, before cell phones really , I thought they would leave
a message on my phone answering machine ... so I got home 4 hours after
I was suppose to be here at home ... I jumped out of the cab, and ran
to open my door so I could check my machine ... my daughter always
watched my home when I was gone, and we had a key hidden if I got home and
she wasn't there ... so I looked where it should have been, but it
wasn't there .. yikes .... I got out a garden hoe to try and break one of my
downstairs window to check the phone .. I hit that sucker so hard but I
couldn't break it ... yikes what I was to do ... just about then my
daughter pulled up with a key ... well I checked my machine and yes they
had left a message .. they were gone, but if I could meet them in
Chicago, I could get a ride the rest of the way ... so I threw my stuff
together, and walked to the interstate that is not far away ... I was so
lucky, I hitched hiked a ride from a truck driver that took me all the way
to a suburb of Chicago .. I called the guys and they came and picked me
up ... we drove to the uncle of one of the guys .. it was really in a
nice neighborhood and I was impressed .. we spent the night here and
left the next day ... interesting thing about the house, in the basement
no less, there was a gold record ... the uncle of one of the guys was
the producer of milli vannilles gold record ... it was on a wall and to
this day, I forget what the name of that song was ... so off to
woodstock ... these guys were so funny, two were 20 and one 21 and they had
never been outside of metro LA ... they had rented a brand new Lincoln
mountaineer I think it was so we had plenty of room ... with never being
in the country at all, they wanted to stop at every farm and every silo
we saw on the road to take pictures ... I chuckled a little, but I
guess I understood ... we arrived there on Thursday night and was ready to
camp and go into the venue on Friday .... cont part one of three

since we had got there the night before, we headed straight in a missed
a lot of the traffic ... they said they sold 200,000 tics, so there
sure was a lot of people there ahead of us ... since I didn't really
know
they guys, I said I would meet them at the SUV after the show .. off I
went with my little tent and my Woodstock (peanuts) flag ... I picked a
pretty nice place to camp, no shade but on the grass ..... the venue
was at an old SAC Air Force base ... Griffiss AFB ... I had to look
these
stats up because I forgot ..245 acres inside the venue .. a fence
surrounding the entire base of over 6 miles long ... to surround the
actual
venue of the stages, the fence was said to be over 3 miles ... from the
east stage to the west stage, was about 3/4 of a mile, but if you were
in a hurry, you had to walk around the crowd, so it was a mile and a
half or so ... you had to plan what stage you wanted to be at, but most
of the time I hung at the east stage or the hanger that had an actual
plane in it .. they used it for the raves after the main stage was
finished .... I wanted to see the opening band for the show, and it was
James
brown ... I guess that was the last time I saw him .. at that point
there might have been 100k or so, so it was crowded but not super
packed
... he came on about noon, and the crowd went crazy because it was the
opening act for the entire event .... that early day saw jamiroquai,
live and Sheryl crow, but that was just the start of the day .. I went
back to see what was up with my tent and make sure all was fine, and no
one had touched any of my stuff .. hung there a while and walked back
to
the east stage ... then it all went off .. first the offspring, which
was big at the time ... empty bottles were flying everywhere and it
looked like snow was coming down ... then korn came on .. say what you
will
about korn, they rocked the house .. i have always liked Bush and they
were the closing band .. they put on a great show ... never hit the
west stage that day .. ah, but now it was off to the hanger for an all
night show with Moby ... I got some "stuff" so sleep was not in the
picture ... after raving till the sun came up, I walked back to my tent
....
day two ....that was a day not to be forgotten ... first nice and slow
with the counting crows, then Dave Matthews band, alanis and then a
short reprieve .. then all hell broke loose.. Fred hit the stage with
limp
bizkit .. it was during that show that a couple of girls were said to
have been raped up close to the front ... the crowd slowed down a bit
only to make way for Rage Against the Machine ... Bulls on Parade,
Bullet
in the Head, they were ready for us ... zack burned an American flag
which set off a mini riot .... so the crowd was so pumped up and then
Metallica hit the stage .. all of the hits as it were .. we all had a
great time, albeit ready to riot ..... so it was off to a late night
rave
with fatboy slim .. always like that guy .. I didn't stay as late that
night because I was so tired ... off to the last day ... at ws 69 we
had
the mud people, at 99 there were the mud people, but the mud they had
was made from the portiie potties that had overrun, so guess what they
had all over them ... the camping was tight but fun ... there was a
lake
close by but most people used it for relief so it was called the pee
lake ... there was also the trees by there, that everyone went to meet
and greet lol .. next day ...at that point a lot of people were done ..
done with burritos that cost 10 bucks, plenty of water but you had to
wade thru the filth to get to it .. the trip between the east and
west
stage, was all concrete because it was a runway ... the people , me, who
got up early saw Elvis Costello, jewel, creed but then it came to the
closer .. the red hot chili peppers closed out the show .... well
someone
that wasn't thinking decided that it would be cool to give everyone a
candle for peace ... sure didn't work ... a small group started the
fires .. it was sometime before rhcp played jimi's cover of Fire, but
all
of the sudden, the vendor booths were on fire ... people were stealing
the t shirts and everything they could take. then they set fire to
some
of the semi trucks that were there ... well I didn't want to
participate, so I just walked to my little Woodstock tent .. the next
day I
hooked up with the rainbow guys ... one last small part .. cr***** ...
canexplain
04-11-2007, 06:35 PM
so me and the rainbow guys headed back west .. they wanted to go to
Niagara falls because they had never seen it .. and of course all of those
damn farms, silos, and cows ... we got home a few days later and they
took off ... it was one hell of a trip ... and that is then end of my
story .. some times and days might be a bit wrong, but as the BMOTW, I
hope you got most of it cr*****

Please answer these questions:
1. If you were stranded on a desert island, what would be the one album you would want with you?
2. The name of your childhood pet?
3. Particular area of expertise?
1) This is tough. I'm not going to go for the neutral pick of something that wouldn't get tiresome like Handel or Bach or something, because I'd rather have something I feel super passionately about even if I get sick of it more quickly. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, OK Computer and Surfer Rosa would all be in the running, but I’m going to go with Let It Bleed, not necessarily because it is the best album ever created, but because it was the soundtrack of my childhood and I love it.
2) I had several cats and dogs growing up. When I was super young, we had two cats – Papaya and Chico. When my grandmother passed away, we inherited her cat, Boo Boo, who really liked to drool when you petted him. Later, I had a brown and white english springer spaniel named Coco.
3) Maybe not a total expert, but I know quite a lot about: art history, art museums, espresso-based beverages and coffee, college and grad school admission, standardized testing, bridesmaid stuff, sexual & reproductive health issues, yoga, crew/rowing, international travel (especially budget travel) and cooking.
I can’t even make a question short lol so here it is … to get a little background I read your bio … so you like cooking bread eh .. 4) I love baking bread. I really love all sorts of baking and cooking, but bread is something that's particularly fun because there's the mindless labor of kneading the dough and waiting for it to rise and then kneading again. Most days I do work that's somewhat intellectual from 9am to 6pm, so it's great to come home and enjoy an activity that lets me relax and turn the brain off for a while. And I love giving people homemade bread. I have very good relationships with my neighbors!

I know a lot of women (and probably some men too) have this stuff all planned out, but I haven't really thought about it much and can't really imagine ever having kids. I guess if I did have some, I'd probably choose a family name out out of respect. Although I'd hope that the father's family had some good names, because my family has a lot of really bad names that I wouldn't want to use. (Buffy? Chip? Dot? Courtney,
i'm super stoked you are BMOTW. yay. questions:
1.) who is your favorite artist and why?

Aw, thanks ewiggy :)
This is tough because I'm sort of slutty when it comes to art -- I love most of it. But I'm going to choose Donald Judd and Earth Art, respectively.
Donald Judd is my favorite artist on multiple levels. First, I think his work is totally beautiful and I love looking at it as a pure aesthetic enjoyment sort of thing. Second, I'm interested in what he stands for in the history of art -- specifically, a codification of the minimalist aesthetic and an instance of simulataneously turning away from the New York-centric art world and at the same time creating an alternative community of incredibly productive, interesting artistic talent based on the exploration of the place of art in commodity culture and its relationship to American culture. Third and finally, I'm interested in Judd as a writer/critic, and I think he has done some of the most important writing on the field of art post-Greenberg.
Earth Art I like for many of the same reasons that I'm interested in Judd -- this relationship between art and commodity, and between art and the notion of space (and specifically the art that deals with American space). I'm really into, so I dig the idea of viewing as pilgrimage, and the tougher something is to get to the bigger the reward. So, Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty? Bring it on! Water de Maria's Lighting Field? James Turrell's Roden Crater? Hells yeah. The idea of massive art produced by massive egos in remote locations is just plain awesome. And of course, I also engage with it on a critical level, and am very interested in its relationship to notions of masculinity, America, entopy and environmental concerns, and of course things like pop art, minimalism, deconstructivism and post-modernism.
I should say that none of this has anything to do with my current work.
Courtney

You've been to the Smell, and for that, in addition to many other things, you gain my esteem. Expound for me, if you will, upon the delights of this venue, and convince me to go, would you?
(Note the ending turning this into a question. Smooth, are I not?)
Very smooth, Bryan. I would expect nothing less.
As for The Smell, how do you feel about sweaty bodies in tightly packed spaces rocking out to lesser-known bands? Do you like body odor? How do you feel about chugging a forty in the parking lot pre-show and then stumbling inside and not paying a dime for liquor? And how do you feel about hanging out with the homies on Skid Row?
The Smell isn't some fancy bobo venue like the El Rey or whatever. People don't go because they want to hang out somewhere comfortable and be seen. They go because of the music. Obviously, it's not for everyone, and there's a high probability that you'll be mugged/car-jacked, but I think it's pretty fucking awesome.
More questions:
When do you next plan to leave the country? How often do you leave the country in an unplanned fashion? Have you ever been a member of a secret society that worked to change the fashion industry? How much water do you drink per day?
I don't currently have any tickets purchased, but I generally aim to visit at least one new country each year if my bank account and work schedules allow it. I'm all about last minute airfares and finding deals. I've snagged Beijing for $400 roundtrip, Budapest for $250 and even once caught a travelocity.com database glitch that had me to Lima for $50. Generally, I have several trip ideas on the horizon, so nothing is totally unplanned, but depending on what's available I'll be fairly flexible. Right now, I have Vietnam, India, Bulgaria and Brazil on the ideas list.
I am not at liberty to speak of any societies I may or may not be actively engaged in. I can however say that you should be thanking someone for the demise of the trucker hat.
I'm a big fan of water, and totally don't get people who say they don't like the taste of water or only drink soda or something. I generally carry around a one-liter bottle, which I'll refill a couple times throughout the day. So I guess that means I drink anywhere between two and three liters per day, not including whatever's on the table with meals.
me thinks courtney is falling down on her job :) cr*** wake up courtney !!!
Sorry, sorry, blame it on Thursday night festivities. I'm just a little intimidated by expectations, given the awesoe job that you did cr***. I'll try to do better!

OK, based on your avatar, is the first peter, bjorn and john album your favourite of the three?
I honestly chose the image as an avatar because I thought that it looked better when shrunk than the others did.
All three PB&J albums are good. My favorite is probably their middle album, Falling Out. To me it seems more mature than their debut album. The self-titled debut album is great, but Falling Out does better with the song writing and also seems to explore more of a range between their super pop-y upbeat stuff and more mellow tracks.
And Writer's Block? Pshaw, if MTV is playing it, I'm not buying it. (I'm kidding of course. Writer's Block is good too, but it's more about the hook than the first two.)

Awesome. I saw them when they came here to LA a couple months ago and they were really good. It was a smallish show at the Roxy, but they had tons of energy and the crowd was really into it. But then they were on Conan I think (or maybe it was some other late night TV show? I get them confused) and that performance wasn't so good. I'm hoping that they pull it all out for Coachella.

It's true that if you have kids, you won't be traveling to a different country every year, and you probably won't be going to a lot of concerts anymore. *sigh* I love my kids, but they are expen$ive.
My question is would you want to be a space tourist if you could come up with enough cash for it? I heard the latest figures are around $200,000 to be in space for a short time (10 minutes or so?), although those first tourists won't get to go for a few years.

I think there was a thread about the "best concert" question, which I never answered because I couldn't decide. I've seen a lot of great shows, but I think for me it's just as much about the personal experience as it is about the music itself.
When I was a teenager, I followed around and did the groupie thing for a little while with this small band called the Push Stars which I was really into at the time. I'm not sure if I'll ever again get that sort of intensity of experience in a concert -- youthful hormones, unbridled lust/love, exhilaration, and feeling like that one moment is truly at the center of your universe. It was intoxicating in ever sense of the word.

Yeah, I know some parents who do manage to maintain their crazy, globe-trotting, partying, workoholic lifestyles post-kids, but they do so with a lot of help from a nanny or boarding school or whatever. I think that's shitty and irresponsible -- if you're going to have kids, you need to be willing to actually be a parent.
I definitely would not be a space tourist if I had an extra $200,000 to throw around. There are so many better things to do with that kind of money. Plus, I consider airplanes to be a necessary evil. It's something I use to go places I want to go, but it's not like I'm ever excited for the flight itself. Sure with space travel you get the whole weightless thing, but otherwise it's just a glorified airplane ride. If you want to be weightless, learn how to scuba dive.

Courtney,
This is a "thinker" question...so take your time in answering. I'm anticipating your answer will be a long one...sorry about that.
In comparing your generation to that of your mom's...what do you feel are the main differences women have in today's society?..the hardest AND easiest advantages & disadvantages for both of you.
Okay, I'm gonna try to tackle this now. I hope that my answer isn't woefully inadequate. For context, I'm 24 and my mother is 54.
I'm happy to have been born as a woman into my generation and not my mother's. There are so many things that I take for granted that I know that her generation worked hard for. There are the obvious things -- workplace equality, reproductive rights, Title IX, sexual harassment law, etc. And then there are the less obvious things too, like the visibility of accomplished female role models.
The above are just some of the many advantages to being a woman growing up in Generation Y. But I do think there are some disadvantages. My generation has to deal with things like scary STDs and heavier drugs than were common for the baby boomers. The Baby Boomers had Vietnam; we have an extremist president who is currently waging war not only on Iraq, but also on civil liberties at home not to mention the health of our environment.
Perhaps the biggest difference growing up in Generation Y is the widespread detachment. As feminism is replaced by post-feminism which is replaced by post-post-feminism, young women are made to believe that "freedom" is posting revealing photos on myspace or reading about 101 sexual positions in the newest issue of Cosmo. But it's not only that sexuality is something available, and dare I say required, of younger and younger girls each year (the Britney Spears phenomenon). The scary thing is that women are so used to having the ability to do what they want when they want that they don't realize how tenuous their freedoms really are. They don't realize that Roe v. Wade isn't a given. That even in 2007, states like Mississippi are putting forth legislation that if passed could ban abortion, denying women control over their own bodies.
I think this detachment is painfully clear when it comes to events like the Imus situation. So much of the press was focused on the word "nappy." But what about the fact that these outstanding young women, role models attending a good university and competing athletically on an impressive level, were being called whores? Is that somehow less of a problem?
So those are some of the bad things about being a woman in Generation Y. But all considered, I think we have it pretty good. I'm among the first generation where the number of women attending higher education surpasses that of men. In my lifetime we could possibly for the first time see a total equality of hourly wages between men and women. We likely will see the first female president. Those are certainly things about which to rejoice.
Thanks for asking this question. It really made me think.

That being said, there are typically certain music "scenes," for ex: raves. I'm sure you've either heard of them or been to one. What are your feelings on this "scene," in particular? A lot of people argue that they have nothing to do with the music and all to do with the drugs. What do you think?

The article said it may be because women are not as forceful as men when asking for deserved raises. So somehow it turns out it's our fault that we don't get paid as much as men.

cr*** your answers were totally awesome. Don't undersell yourself. I hope that when I'm your age I have half as many cool stories to tell.
The obvious answer to your question would be something like baby photos or a pet. But I don't currently have either. I've moved around so much that I try to live fairly sparsely. I do have a lot of books, and admittedly quite a collection of high heels, but both are easily replaceable. I'd probably grab the small collection of art I have, most of which was given to me by friends, my passport (because if Los Angeles was burned down at least I'd want to be able to go someplace cool while it was being re-built), and some family heirloom pieces of jewelry.

Oh that makes me angry. Although it doesn't surprise me. Even in my field, the majority of people coming out of art history MA and PhD programs are women, and have been for the past 20 years, but yet the majority of curators and directors of major art museums are men. That's fucked up.

This is a good question.
I'd say that my first Coachella experience, in 2004, would definitely be up there. Obviously, so would drug experiences, and falling in love. But I'm going to exclude those two because you know, this is the internet and all. Actually, taking drugs and boys out of the equation excludes most of my super intense experiences. But I'll tell you about my most intense PG/PG-13 experience (hah).
It was the summer of 1998, I was 16 and living in Paris. The World Cup for soccer was hosted by France that year. It came down to the Brazilian and French teams in the final. Brazil was the likely winner, being the historic powerhouse, and having won quite a few World Cups in prior years. France was the underdog, but of course as the home team everyone was rooting for them.
I didn't originally have tickets to the final game, but a friend, Natasha, was sick and ended up giving her ticket to me at the last minute. The game was held in this gigantic stadium in the suburbs of Paris, and everyone there was fanatical. I know us Americans like our football or basketball or baseball, but it's nothing compared to the French and their love for their soccer. The entire stadium was packed with what must have been at least 75,000 screaming, face-painted, insane fans for whom this seemed like the most important event of their entire life. And it was contagious. The French made their first two goals early, Zidane scoring two headers. The Brazilians still hadn't scored any points when the French made their third goal in the second half. When the match finished, it was 3-0, and the crowd was ecstatic. The energy in the stadium was off the charts amazing. People screaming, hugging each other, dancing and even grown men crying for joy.
I was living near the Parc Monceau at that time, in the 17th arrondisement, but after the match we followed the stream of revelers out of the stadium and towards the Champs Elysees where there must have been a million crazy, celebrating fans. The party went all night and into the wee hours of the morning. At 16, being surrounded by that kind of energy, it was intoxicating. To have so many people, strangers, come together around one central desire, and then to have that desire come to fruition, was amazing. For that night, we weren't strangers, because we all shared that one thing in common. And to have France win seemed to erase anything else that could possibly be going wrong in your life or in the world at large, because for that one instant in time, things had gone as they should.
So now, I wanna know what's yours?

And maybe even a significant part of it. But it's certainly not the defining feature -- music is the defining feature.

Congrats on being BMOTW, Courtney. It's long overdue. Since people asked me a lot of smarty-pants questions about books, I'll ask you some smarty-pants questions about art.
1) You mentioned earlier that you're a fan of Earth Art. Do you see Christo fitting into this movement? Are there any of his "pieces" that you especially like?
Uh-oh, well, if we're going to get all smarty-pants around here, I'm happy to play along. But I'm going to start including images in my replies, because I'm BMOTW and therefore I think I should be able to make some rules.
1) Christo and his partner Jeanne-Claude are definitely part of the Earth Art movement, and probably its most well-known contributors. Works like Valley Curtain or Running Fence fit some of the key components of Earth Art -- they're monumental works created outdoors in relationship to the environment.
http://www.marin.cc.ca.us/art107/images/ChristoRunningFenceLand.jpg
Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Running Fence, Marin County, California, 1976
However, one of the things that I find most interesting about Earth Art is its explicit denial of the commodification of art. The rise of the movement in the 1960s and 70s was closely tied to a backlash against the gallery culture of artists like Andy Warhol or Claes Oldenburg. When artists like Michael Heizer or Robert Smithson went outside of the standard art world to create their land art, they did so with the understanding that this was something that could not be brought into a gallery and sold to a collector in the normal commodity exchange system.
The problem with Christo and Jeanne-Claude is that they have found a way to successfully marry the two -- commodity and earth art. In recent projects like The Gates, they've created a series of sketches and plans for the project, which they then produced as multiples and sold for astronomical prices. These papers were largely what financed the project, over 21 million dollars in total.
http://www.aggregatedlife.com/personal/images/gates13.jpg
Christo & Jeanne-Claude, The Gates, Central Park, New York City, 2005
While Christo & Jeanne-Claude still engage with the concept of Earth Art in some aspects, I think this commodification of the work separates them from the true, original intentions of the movement. Their work also seems to have a lot to do with Performance Art or Installation Art, in that unlike most Earth Art which is interested in the entropy of nature and the general disintegration of the artist's work, Christo & Jeanne-Claude in almost all cases create temporary structures to be viewed for a brief period of time and then take down before they have a real chance to interact with the environment.
To answer the second part of this question, about which artists in Earth Art I especially like, I'd say that I'm very interested in Gordon Matta-Clark, Michael Heizer, Walter de Maria and Robert Smithson. Pretty much anything owned by the Dia Foundation is awesome, but two of my favorites are de Maria's Lightning Field and Smithson's Spiral Jetty.
http://www.cybercityradio.com/images/lightningfieldpopsci-lg.jpg
Walter de Maria, Lightning Field, New Mexico, 1977
Lightning Field is a plot of land in the desert in southwest New Mexico where de Maria has taken 400 steel poles and arranged them sticking out of the ground in a 1 mile by 1 km grid. It's quite a trip, but you can arrange to visit the installation during peak lightning season in the summer and stay in a cabin overnight near the property. The sight of the field, illuminated by a lightning storm, is breathtaking.
http://www.davidmaisel.com/pictures/00025104_spiraljettytoo.jpg
Robert Smithson, Spiral Jetty, Great Salt Lake, Utah, 1970
Spiral Jetty is probably the most iconic earth work created by the movement. It's a 1500-foot long spiral of rock and earth sticking into the northern edge of the Great Salt Lake. Because of fluctuation in water level it's not always visible, but I was able to take the trip to see it in 2005 after it had just emerged for the first time in 15 or so years. The way that the salt water had crystallized on the rock makes the entire spiral luminescent in the sunlight. The water in that part of the lake is a strange red, and the contrast between the glimmering white spiral and the red water is breathtaking. It's also quite difficult to get to, and a full day's trip from Salt Lake City by car because much of the journey is unpaved.

2) What are your thoughts on German Expressionism? It's my favorite period, and I always like finding out what other arty types think of it. Do you have a favorite artist from this period?
2) To tell you the truth, I'm not terribly fond of German Expressionism. I think it perhaps has something to do with the large amount of writing on it that takes a psychoanalytic methodology. I hate Freud. Or maybe it just has something to do with the fact that I think the majority of German Expressionism is ugly. (Sorry Roberto.)
I do like James Ensor, but he's Belgian. And I love Egon Schiele, but he's Austrian. And Francis Bacon, but he's British. As for the Germans, not so much.
I will give you that the German Expressionist movement created a lot of quality cinema. Films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu, or later stuff by Fritz Lang, are much more visually interesting to me than any painting, drawing, sculpture or prints coming out of the movement.

Tygerlady, I'm glad you found my answer adequate. It was an intimidating question!
There definitely is a gender difference when it comes to music. It's obvious when you look at the people working in a record store or DJing or even posting on the Coachella message board. As for why this discrepancy exists, I'm not entirely sure. I'm sure that there's someone out there who would give you a physiological explanation about how men hear things differently than women (there have been studies that show that as you age, deterioration in hearing ability occurs differently depending on your gender). But I'd hazard to guess to that it has much more to do with social factors than with physiological ones. Something to do with how our society and culture supports men getting into music more than women. But I don't really have a good answer. Do you have any ideas?

I speak French poorly, but I read fairly well. I only lived in Paris for eight months.
The favorite country question is tricky. I've been really lucky to have traveled a lot, both with my family while I was growing up and now on my own. I tend to favor less touristy locations over the obvious ones like Rome or Cancun or something. The Seychelles and Turkey would both be up there on my favorite countries list. But I think as of now Peru tops the charts, if only because it has absolutely everything from surfing to nightlife to hiking to art museums and gorgeous old cathedrals. And the people are awesome.

I'm the kind of person that if I see something I don't recognize on a menu, I'll often order it. Often without even asking the waiter to explain what it means. So yeah, I'm all for trying local food. American food isn't that good anyway, so I'm happy to get away from it sometimes. When traveling, I especially like trying local street food and stuff that's not necessarily haute cuisine. You can usually get the fancy stuff at ethnic restaurants in Los Angeles anyway. I do admit that I'm a fan of McDonalds restaurants abroad. But it's only for the toilets! They're often the cleanest, easiest places to find a public bathroom.
The second part of your question has two aspects: the food that I eat at home, and the food that I eat when I go out to eat in Los Angeles.
For going out to eat, I'm lucky to live in a neighborhood that has a lot of great multi-ethnic options around, including Mexican, Thai, Indian, Vietnamese and Japanese, all of which I eat quite a lot of. Sometimes I'll travel to places with more obscure national cuisines, in which case I'm less likely to go out to restaurants to continue to eat the food once I return home.
As for cooking at home, I definitely enjoy playing around with different cuisines in the kitchen. For day-to-day stuff I don't go too crazy, but if I'm having people over I'll get a little fancy and plan a menu around a theme, which is sometimes ethnic. So, for example maybe I'd have a Spanish sort of themed dinner with a few great bottles of rioja, some little tapas, my asparagus-shrimp paella and a simple flan for desert. It's not necessarily like I do totally traditional ethnic cooking, but I like to take inspiration from a certain cuisine and then make it my own by using whatever is in-season at the farmer's market. Also, I'm lucky enough to have a friend who owns a cooking school here, so sometimes I'll sit in on those classes and learn more about a cuisine that I have no clue about (Persian is what I'm currently working on.)

It was really cool, and the amount of time he spent out there really impressed me. It was funny because he had a big sheet covering everything he did from the prying eyes of people on the street, but from the window of the shop I worked in, I could see everything he was doing. When I finally watched Rivers & Tides I was even more impressed.

I can understand what you're saying. I do think that Christo and Jeanne-Claude create some interesting stuff. What I'm saying is that they shouldn't use the rhetoric of Earth Art if they're going to be all about commercialism. It just isn't the right idiom for then.
I'm all for including them in a tradition of spectacle like the style of Yves Klein or even Matthew Barney. But to say that they are part of a tradition of Earth Art is to deny a large part of what makes Earth Art so neat.
I have no problem with commercial art. I'm all about Warhol, who's probably the pinnacle of commercialism. But the thing I like about Warhol is that he doesn't deny that that's what he's about. He embraces it, and in fact deals with it straight on in works like the Campbell's Soup Can series or the Brillo Boxes. My problem with Christo and Jeanne-Claude is that much of the writing about them denies any sort of relationship to commodity culture, upholding them within the Earth Art tradition. That pisses me off.
But yeah, that's just me. I totally respect what you're saying.

Here's a couple of questions:
1. What group or musician would you spare no expense and travel the farthest to see? If you have done that...tell us about the trip and who it was.
2. Who was your favorite group when you were a teenager? Are they still?
3. Have you ever gone to a rock concert with your parents? If so, tell us about it.
4. Do you play a musical instrument? If not, what would it be if you took lessons now for it? (An air-guitar doesn't count...neither does air-drums...lolol)
That ought to keep you busy for a while.. :)

Damn you SubBass. Why can't you ask me questions about dancing cats or Paris Hilton or something? This is too hard.
I do think that all schools should have emergency plans for events like the one that occurred yesterday. Especially if they already had a drill where they put the school in lock-down just this past August because of a different shooter. I'm not even sure that guns are entirely the problem. I mean, I don't like guns any more the the next bleeding liberal, but you don't need a gun to wreak havoc. In the age of chemical warfare, guns are probably the least of our worries. And I'm not sure that we can blame the media, or video games, for this sort of thing either.
It's tremendously sad that there wasn't a quicker, more effective response to the situation that could have prevented the additional casualties. I was listening this morning as the news eulogized a couple of the professors who died, and to me that's the most heart-breaking part when you actually learn about the people individually and stop seeing them as some abstract group.
But as sad as it is, it's really quite incredible that this sort of thing doesn't happen more frequently. It seems to me that there's some sort of balance to strike between the extremes of either being a totalitarian big brother-type society where all aspects of life (including gun control, mental illness, etc) are regulated, and at the other end of the spectrum being a complete laissez-faire anarchist society where nothing is regulated. And as long as you're somewhere in that middle, you're always going to have to deal with at least some small amount of violence and crime. The question to ask is, is it worth it? To keep our freedom, is it worth having to deal with the crime that does occur, even if it's horrible tragedy like what occurred yesterday?
I am of the opinion that it is indeed worth it, so I accept that there is always going to be some amount of violence. The trick is just doing everything possible to minimize it without effecting the overall quality of life or freedoms of the society.

Yikes more big questions. Thanks Tygerlady.
1) Maybe I'm not fanatical enough for this message board, but I can't really think of many musicians alive and performing today who I would blow my entire bank account going to see. I mean, I don't even bother to try to see Radiohead anymore. However, if you were telling me that Jimi Hendrix was being resurrected from the grave for one final show, that would be a different story. I guess the band I've probably seen the most live is Yo La Tengo -- multiple times traveling across state lines to do so. Luckily, their tickets are cheap.
2) I was really into Tori Amos. I think I played Under the Pink so many times that I actually wore it out and had to buy a new one. I still know all of the lyrics, but I don't listen to it much anymore. I did break out her album Little Earthquakes the other day, and was surprised how good it still sounds to me.
3) I've been to several rock concerts with my parents. I think I dragged my poor mother along to a few shows like Tori Amos and Oasis when I was young, but more recently I really enjoy going to see live music with my father. We saw a great Patti Smith show together last year. Also, he took me to a U2 concert recently which was great because there's no way I ever could have afforded tickets!
4) I play piano, poorly. I'd like to get better.

I believe that the rise in feline auditory-locomotive rhythmic behaviors is directly proportional to the frequency of negative intelligence quotient highly publicized activities by female homo sapiens named Paris Hilton. These two trends together have resulted in the consumption of internet resources to exponentially rise. However, a positive correlation does not prove a causal relationship. It is more likely that these two occurrences share a common underlying cause. I blame Richard Branson.

Powder heroin, of course.
Or if that's not available, I'll settle for a good caprese sandwich: a freshly-baked baguette still warm from the oven, sliced in half and filled with fresh buffalo mozzarella, tomato, basil, oregano-infused onion slices, all drizzled with a little extra virgin olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar. There's a place in Santa Monica called Bay Cities Deli that does this perfectly.

I guess it depends how serious. If I thought it was life or death, obviously I'd stay. But if I thought it was just a illness that required some hardcore prescription antibiotics or something, I'd be outta there.
But hey, that's how my family is. There's no coddling for minor problems, but if it's major then I know they'll be there. My family ditched me once in a hotel in Puerto Rico because I couldn't fly with an ear infection. Hah.

The problem with your situation is that I would like to give people the chance to do all the stuff they would want to do on their last day on earth, but at the same time, I know that if the word got out then things would quickly dissolve into mass panic/chaos. This is a good one. I might have to come back and revise my answer if I think of more things. I'm actually really lucky to have already tackled quite a lot of things that I want to do in life, so I'll keep this list to the things that I haven't yet done.
1. scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef
2. run a marathon
3. take a year off to travel the world
4. finish my dissertation
5. take a boat trip into the Brazilian rainforest
6. visit Angkor Wat
7. see the Northern Lights
8. learn Italian
9. get naked at a nude beach
10. take a roadtrip from Los Angeles to New York
Oh, and this is #11 I guess, but I really want to learn the rules of American football, because it's embarrassing that I never know what the hell is going on.
BTW.. I still have a couple left on my list which are to go in a hot air balloon , to travel to China to walk on and touch "The Great Wall", and to go on one of those fly-in chartered fishing trips to Alaska.
I've never been in a hot air balloon or been to Alaska, but I've been to the Great Wall. It used to be somewhat difficult and require a bit of hiking, but now they have a tram which will take you right from tour bus up to the top of the wall with minimal effort. I'm proud that I did the old fashioned full-day hike thing.

Haha. We were thinking the same thing.
I choose computer. Because I love cooking and music too much to go without either of them. Chatting online is fun, and so is reading blogs and stuff, but other than that I don't think I'd miss it too much.
When I'm writing, if I have time, I often prefer to do a loose rough draft on a typewriter. There's something very organic about physically seeing ink on paper. I find it's much easier to get the words down that way than when I'm using a computer. It's gotten me through many cases of writer's block.
I also prefer phone or letters over e-mail, when possible. I'm a little bit of a Luddite.

1. Thanks for the mix. Awesome.
You're welcome :)
2. Out of the art museums that you have visited which one is your favorite?
This is tough. There are so many great museums out there. Places like the Metropolitan Museum in New York or the Louvre in Paris are great because they have absolutely everything under the sun from ancient Greek statues up to contemporary photography. But I also love smaller, more specialized collections like the Frick Museum in New York, the Huntington in Pasadena, or the Musée Rodin in Paris, because their collections are very focused and it's nice to have the setting of being inside of a period-style house to get the full experience instead of just dealing with art on plain white walls.
But my favorite museum right now is probably the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas. It's in the middle of nowhere, about three hours east of El Paso. The site was an old converted army post with massive artillery sheds, barracks and administrative buildings that was purchased and converted into a museum in the 80s by the sculptor Donald Judd. He was very selective in choosing the work, and even today it only has about 12 artists in the permanent collection, each taking one or several of the buildings on the property to install large-scale pieces, often sculpture.
One of the best parts of the Chinati is that it's so out of the way, in the middle of nowhere, that it's almost always empty from what I understand. It's accessible by arranged tour only, and so you get the experience of being alone with the artwork which is amazing compared to most museum where you have to deal with a million obnoxious tourists walking in front of you when you're trying to enjoy the art.
Here are some photos of the Chinati Foundation.

Is there a art museum that is on your must visit list?
I'd love to visit the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis at some point. When it comes to contemporary art, they're doing some of the most exciting curatorial work in the country at the moment. And also the Detroit Institute of Arts, to see their Diego Rivera murals.
These aren't museums, but I really want to visit the Rothko Chapel in Houston. And stupidly, although I've been to Rome I've never actually visited the Vatican, so that seems like a must-do for the Sistine Chapel.

Are we still asking Courtney questions today? If so, Courtney you are on a first date with a guy, you've been wanting for ages, to go out with. He's drop-dead handsome, intelligent, sense of humor...everything on the plus side you've been looking for. You're at a very expensive restaurant having dinner...and after eating your salad you notice your date has a partial piece of spinach stuck to his front tooth. You don't want to embarass your date so.....What do you do to remedy the situation? (besides trying not to laugh, or stare at that piece of spinach that's driving you crazy..lol)
My edit is: On my first date with Ron we had an awkward situation occur too which is funny now when we talk about it...it wasn't funny then though. If you want to know what it was I'll tell you after you answer this. Sometimes it's those kinds of things happening that endear you more to each other. :)

Yikes, I need a fridge most definitely! Cool beer and white wine is essential.
And as for the phone, it's not a bad idea to have a land line, if only for emergency purposes. Because if the power goes out, you won't be able to use your cell for too long before it goes dead. At least, that's the main reason I have mine. I use my cell for pretty much everything and only telemarketers call my land line.

Oh haha, well I guess I'd just make a bit of a joke out of it and tell him nicely. Hopefully he would just laugh it off. I mean, I wouldn't want to be going out with someone who couldn't laugh at himself anyway.
There's nothing worse than an uncomfortable, uptight first date. Better to just be relaxed and be yourself. In fact, I hate going to super expensive restaurants on first dates in general, especially if you can tell it isn't the guy's thing. Much better to just do something casual where you can be stupid and have a fun time.
And yes, please do tell me the story of when you and Ron first started dating. I'm curious now!

2. The name of your childhood pet?
3. Particular area of expertise?
And the first question that comes to mind is how's "the lad"?
1. I'd want that great spoken word album "How To Build A Raft from Flotsam Found On A Desert Island", narrated by Patrick Stewart. It was on the New York Times bestseller lists for ages!
....or failing that, Dark Side of The Moon. It's not necessarily my favorite album, but it is the one album that I've never thought "nah, not in the mood for that". I think I'd want an album I never tired of if it's the only friggin' one I have!
2. I never really had childhood pets, not unless you count fairground goldfish which invariably were called Goldie for the 12 hours or so of pitiful life they had before they died.
3. My particular area of expertise is probably useless trivia knowledge. I'm the guy that gets e-mails and phone calls from friends that usually start "settle a bet - who did....."
I was fortunate enough to be able to turn that love for the mundane and esoteric into a career in Scotland. I did 3 or 4 quiz nights a week in bars and hotels, before I came over here, married, and gave all that staying-out-nights-and-weekends-stuff up.
As for The Lad, he's doing fine, working part-time at a diner and taking a course in Music Production at the local Conservatory.

Yup, pretty much the first one! John Peel was effectively the big brother with a cool record collection that I never had. He turned me on to bands I'd never heard of, musical styles I didn't think I'd like and did it with such a ramshackle lack of professionalism that made you realize he had the best job in the world.
I was old enough to remember both Elvis and Lennon's deaths, and while they affected me at the time, neither hurt as much as when I heard Peelie had a coronary walking in the Andes.
I was at work and I'm not ashamed to say that I broke down. His legacy across the entire industry is massive and I miss him like a family member.
What's not to love about a guy who, three minutes into a track, can interrupt with the line "I'm so sorry listeners, I appear to have played that at the wrong speed. I rather like that, I think I'll play it at the wrong speed again tomorrow"!

As a Scotsman who loves most sports, my main passions, both watching and playing, were football (I can't get used to calling it soccer!), rugby and cricket.
Since sport over here only consists of your football, baseball, basketball, hockey and fuckin' NASCAR, I was more or less screwed! I don't mind football, but I loathe with a passion basketball and the World-Driving-Round-In-Circles Championships, so the lack of sport in my life was making me twitchy.
I grew to love baseball for the same reasons I love cricket - the stats, the tactics, the mano-a-mano of pitcher vs hitter. The nuances of baseball that it's detractors just don't get came very naturally to me. And I have a habit of liking underdogs, so the Brewers fit right in!
One of my buddies 3 years ago invited me to join his Fantasy Baseball league. I'd done other fantasy sports so I knew the drill, but I was determined I wasn't gonna be the stupid foreigner that came last. I researched the crap out of all the players, not just Brewers, and because I didn't have the misplaced loyalties of having owned, say, Erstad, in 2001, I went for young guys with upside. I won that year by a mile, and the next, and last year, and by then I was hooked.
...and for the record, I'm winning the Coachella Board one too!:winkiss
And, I'm not actually an Astros fan (Brew Crew all the way baby!), but as divisional rivals, I was interested to see their slow start. Knowing that most Left-coasters don't know or care squat about what goes on here in the Midwest, I threw the comment in to stir the shit a little!

Courtney, yup I have an accent. Any Scots reading this post will know that the Fife accent is a particularly impenetrable brogue, with the word "ken" used as often as "like" is by American teenagers!
I've had to soften the edges a little since coming here, cos it gets really old really fast to have to keep repeating yourself all the time. Black girls that work the drive-thru at Macdonalds seem to have the hardest time. I have to put on the whole "this one time, at band camp" Midwest thang to get them to understand me!
My wife has warned me, on pain of death, not to go down the Sheena Easton midlantic twang route, since that's one of the reasons she imported me!

Which Clue character do most relate to,what weapon would you prefer, and where would you do it?
EDIT
And who would you do in(anybody, not limited to Clue characters)?
God, it's been so long since I played that game. We call it Cluedo in the UK, but I think it's pretty much the same game (unlike Monopoly which uses London Streets instead of Atlantic City - but I digress!).
I'd have to rule out being Rev.Green for a start. I don't have much time for organized religion, so I couldn't be him. That leaves Prof Plum and Col. Mustard (unless we want to go down the cross-dressing route - trust me, you don't want to see me in a dress!)
I'd probably be Prof. Plum for the science groupies, although I'm guessing Col. Mustard gets away with saying whatever the hell he likes to people - that could be fun!
So to solve the crime you'd have to say "Prof. Plum killed Pat Robertson with a well-timed blow to the back of the head with a candlestick."

I plan on staying as long as the wife'll have me! She's the reason I came here in the first place and I have to say I love it here. You better believe, though, that if there was a draft tomorrow she'd be suggesting we move to Scotland!
We are going back to Scotland at the end of May, though. My dad has mesothelioma (a legacy of working with asbestos in the 60s) and this very possibly will be the last time I see him...

Hehe this is cute.
As for the Scottish list of awesomeness
Beta Band
JAMC
Camera Obscura
Belle & Sebastian
BOC
Mogwai
Arab Strap
And that's on a sliding scale from A+ to B
You're killing me here with your placement of Mogwai, but otherwise I'll agree. I think that Scotland produces a disproportionate amount of musical awesomeness.

I'm always a little skeptical of reunions, especially when there have been such bridge-burning quotes as came out in the Andy Rourke court case. I have no problem with bands who say "hey, it seemed like a good idea to kill the goose that laid the golden egg, but since none of us has had a fraction of the success solo that we had as a group, fuck it, let's get back together".
It's the disingenuous ones that paint it as some sort of kismet, that they have unfinished business or other such guff, when we all know it's about the money. I mean, the Pistols reunited for the Filthy Lucre Tour, so at least there was an acknowledgment that they were only in it for the cash.
That said, I'd love to see the Smiths again. I saw them at the Caley Palais in Edinburgh in 1982 shortly before This Charming Man came out, but I'd have squashed kittens to see Queen Is Dead material or Panic with everyone singing "Hang The DJ"!
John Peel, as he always did, would have found music to adore and cherish in the last couple of years since he died. When you have such eclectic tastes, there's more to choose from!
I know he'd have been a fan of LCD Soundsystem (Mark E. Smith vocals notwithstanding!), The Black Keys, Hot Chip and MSTRKRFT.
He'd also have found some unsigned bedroom guy and would have developed an inexplicable fondness for that Uzbek group playing Dead Kennedys covers on the nose flute!

It's a lot easier to visit "other countries" when you live so close to Europe than it is when you live in North America (there's only 3 close to each other..USA, Mexico & Canada)...unless you're in the military because when my sis and her hus were stationed in Germany they went to England, Switzerland, France, Italy ....so my question is:
How many countries have you visited and which one were you the most impressed with and least impressed with and why???
Let's see, apart from the UK and USA which are the easy ones, I've been to:
Switzerland - in summer, so not for winter sports. Very clean, very beautiful, very expensive. Saw Montreux, from where "Smoke On The Water" was inspired and Lake Geneva (the real one, not the Wisconsin one!).
France - Provence to be exact, which is so laid back as to be almost horizontal! I went right after leaving High School with some buddies and realized I probably had half as much money as I probably needed to actually survive. We were camping, and to preserve our money for beer were economizing on food. By the middle of the 2nd week we were living on packet mashed potatoes and rice flavored with ketchup! I lost 7lbs that holiday...
This was also the trip that I visited San Tropez, saw the nudie beaches (amazing how quickly you are desensitized to bewbs!), and photographed Tony Curtis on his motor yacht with the pneumatically-breasted blonde du jour on his arm!
Greece - Specifically the island of Corfu. Simply stunning scenery and the sounds of weird bugs and goat bells really make you feel you're not in Kansas anymore. The whole place just smells incredible what with no smoky industries, and scent of the olive groves and kumquat trees in the air.
Spain - Just one of the Costas, so I don't doubt for a second that I haven't seen the real Spain at all. Least favorite country just because of how overtly touristy and tacky it all was. Did have the very best Macdonalds I've ever eaten, I'm guessing they had crack in them 'cos we couldn't get enough of 'em!
Gibraltar - Same trip, I'm including it even though it's officially part of the UK. It feels like being in Oz for the day - with British money and retail names that you recognize despite very obviously being in a Latin setting. To be able to see the coast of Africa (Morocco at least) from the rock is also a thrill for some reason I've never been able to explain!
Ireland - Despite having air tickets on multiple occasions for Irish cricket and rugby tours, I had cancelled 3 visits before I was able to go last year. Again, I only saw Dublin, so I'm guessing I missed a lot of what makes the country so charming. I was slightly surprised that we barely met any Irish - most of the servers and hotel staff were Eastern European.
We did get a chance to see The Importance Of Being Earnest at the Abbey Theatre, which felt pretty cool. Wilde at the Abbey...
I'm not including Holland, which I've been to twice if you count Schiphol Airport. Can't tell much about a country from that, although, with it's casino and great shops, is easily the best airport on the planet. I didn't check, but I wouldn't have been surprised if they'd had drugs at duty free!
Corfu for the win, I guess. The combination of incredible countryside, friendly locals, delicious fresh food and Adriatic sunshine make a return trip at some point fairly likely.

John Peel, what's the best thing about living in Milwaukee?
Milwaukee is very much a city of what-you-see-is-what-you-get. There is a real-ness to the people here that is very reassuring. I very quickly felt like I was home, and I can't pay the city a higher compliment than to say that I'm homesick for Scotland very rarely.
Midwesterners, and Wisconsinites in particular are very proud of the things that they produce. I live a couple of miles from where Miller Beer is made and about the same from a Harley-Davidson plant, and both names are a source of some pride round here.
It's also a great music city. Certainly not LA, Chicago or NYC great, but a hell of a lot better than Scotland is for touring bands. And there's Summerfest - an 11 day music festival that gives you the chance to answer the question "What the fuck ever happened to Foghat? - oh there they are on the Miller Lite Stage! "
And then of course there's my beloved Brewers...

OK, my first questions for the week:
What were your thoughts when the Brewers left the AL.
What do you think of the radio you hear in Milwaukee. How much do you listen to the radio.
Do you like Scotch. What kinds do you like the most.
Saving the questions up, huh?:)
1. I came here in 2002, so the Crew was already in the NL by the time I started to watch them. I hate the DL though, so I'm glad we are not in the AL anymore.
I do feel slightly stiffed that we're in the only division in baseball with 6 teams, while others have only 3 teams to beat to win their division. On the plus side, that AL East is the group of death year in year out, so we're better off out of it!
2. Radio in Milwaukee sucks like an electrolux. Unless you are a fan of Journey, top 40 hippety-hop, or Tommy freakin' Tutone you're shit out of luck in this city. There is one station that plays "Alternative" *read - RHCP, Green Day and The Killers - but I get so pissed off hearing Dani California for the gajillionth time and ads for sports bars that I rarely listen to it. There's a good college station, but the show that has the music I like is on for only 3 hours a week.
I get my new music fix from Pandora, Last.fm, recommendations on this and other boards, and that Amazon thing that goes "if you like that, you might like this". I wish there was a local equivalent of Peelie, that would do!
3. I rarely drink "scotch", and even rarer call it scotch. I do like a nice smooth single malt every now and again - The Macallan springs to mind. If I can get one, an 18 year old is preferable (aren't they always!), but the 12 yo is no slouch. (......don't put yourself down, you're a tremendous slouch!!)

Do you drink,and if so,what?
Despite living in the alcohol capital of the US, I actually drink less than I did when I lived in Scotland. My wife is Jewish and I guess it's a cultural thing to not emphasize booze so much. (unlike Scots, and indeed most Milwaukeeans who emphasize it a great deal!)
On a hot day while grilling out I like a Miller High Life, in a bar I'll take a "decent" ale like a New Glarus or a weiss bier. I have to stick up for Guinness too and order one now and then.
The one drink, though, which has stuck with me through thick and thin since I was an underage 16 year old pub-goer, is Southern Comfort.
It has magical powers and I never had a hangover from it. Any side effects the following morning were always from the beer chasers - honest!

*slaps self* you're a huge b-ball fan, so I should have asked you this already;
Given the Barry Bonds situation and the lack of national exposure outside of LA and SF, do you think the NL West has been given a bad rap as "the worst" division in Major League Baseball? I mean, everyone openly mocked the Padres (I'm an SD guy) when they won the West last year with a losing record (or two years ago, one of the two) while I personally believe that the N: West is the equivalent of what major sportswriters considered the SEC in College football last year; good enough to where all the teams just beat each other up and end up with not-so perfect records.
Also, when I was searching for Smiths live vids on youtube, I came across a couple of John Peel vids about him speaking on the Smiths, but never had the chance to sneak a peak. Since one of my erstwhile dreams is to become a radio DJ myself, which one of his interviews would you suggest checking out, if any?
