they apparently work better live than on album. i got pretty bored of the album myself. if they wanted to put a heavier band on, there's a hundred better bands than Enter Shikari. hey ho though, they hjave some pretty heavy riffs and some good breakdowns...should be fun! :D

These guys are pretty awful.
Generic screamy techno-laced bullshit for the Saosin set.

Enter Shikari & Dragonforce sound nothing like each other so you can't really compare the 2. I'm not defending either band..just saying.

Also, the difference between these and "every other hardcore band" is that they use synths and try to mix metal with "rave"...albeit, not very well.

I don't think they'll bring any sort of crowd really, as the kids that go to their shows over here in the UK probably are too young to be able to afford to travel to the US, so I think you're safe.

and they're all only kids themselves...look at em all havin fun, playing with their mates...awww bless em :)

I personally think these guys suck ass, but you'd be surprised at how popular they are. They played at Reading festival this year and a mate of mine dragged me along to watch them, well I got out of there before the first song ended 'cos the whole tent was going fucking insane and I mean insane! I saw about three people getting dragged out as I was leaving, basically the tent was one huge moshpit.

A friend told me about Enter Shikari a few months ago. I haven't fully checked them out yet but i was really hooked onto Sorry You're Not a Winner. I believe that any haters just aren't used to that type of music. I used to think "hardcore" music was horrible until i slowly expanded the horizons of my taste in music over the years. However, I do have my limits on "hardcore" music :) So I don't blame you if you don't like them but just don't be too ignorant and harsh about it.

ehh... i've learned after being a fan of theirs for awhile, you cant really convince anyone to like them. theyre just not everyones cup of tea. its like trying to convince someone to like Architecture in Helsinki... you cant really... you just have to hope that they hear what you hear in the music. but, if your going to bash a band, bash them, just dont think that changes fans opinions. same for fans. if someone thinks they suck balls, let the band change their minds, not you. not to be a bitch, but your opinions really dont matter once someones mind is set. hahaha
im seriously wondering why their playing coachella though....... when i saw their name i was like what????? that makes no sense... i expected them on like... a warped tour lineup... not coachella.
i dont think ill see them at coachella, because im seeing them in 2 weeks, unless theres nothing else going on. but theyre playing saturday... which means there are 30 other bands i havent seen that i want to see... so yeah. not seeing enter shikari. haha
have fun though if you are..... their live videos are pretty rad...

I listened to 4 or 5 songs and watched a video or two of their past performances, and I have to say they suck. As someone said earlier in the thread, "Not my cup of tea." Matty22Fatty
02-04-2008, 09:30 AM
Enter Shikari is not hardcore. At some point in the late-80s/early-90s, hardcore became a scene, rather than a genre of music. Some of the sounds have been completely exploited over the past couple of years (e.g., emo, screamo, pop-punk, etc.). Every year, Coachella has one or two bands that emerged from the post-hardcore scene (Thursday, Thrice, Coheed, Circa Survive, etc.). This year, Goldenvoice has blessed us with Flogging Molly. Dredg is borderline and Enter Shikari falls flat.

I was actually hoping that Hot Water Music would be on the bill. They just had a limited reunion tour and will be playing at SXSW. They are an amazing band that would fit nicely at Coachella.

Wait. Did you just say that Flogging Molly emerged out of the post-hardcore scene?

That I did. Flogging Molly emerged out of the So-Cal scene, playing with and still often touring with post-hardcore/punk bands (e.g., HWM). The group is made up of members, who had spent time in harder (metal and hardcore) bands. In addition, while they clearly like to party, they also have a socio-conscious message in their music. Flogging Molly is obviously not a hardcore band, but, in my opinion, they are more part of the scene than a band like Enter Shikari.

I do not have any problems with Enter Shikari. I'm just saying that they are not hardcore, despte the fact that they play powerchords and scream.

It doesn't matter what bands the other band members are from. Thats like saying if Mick Jones started playing guitar for Hannah Montana, she would automatically become a punk artist. Or if Lemmy played bass for Kelly Clarkson, she would be considered Metal. You have a horribly illogical argument.
Flogging Molly are a irish folk group who have spirit of "hardcore", if that is what you would like to call it, inside of them.

It doesn't matter what bands the other band members are from. Flogging Molly are a irish folk group who have spirit of "hardcore", if that is what you would like to call it, inside of them.

One more time: Hardcore is a scene, not a genre of music. It is not that complicated. Hardcore does NOT define what a band sounds like. There are many, many hardcore bands that do not play powerchords or scream. The scene is made up of musicians (of many different genres, including punk, folk, and metal), artists, and activists. If you still don't believe me, check out the bands Iceburn, Quicksand, Converge, Avail, Elliott and Farside - the music is all over the place, yet they are all certainly hadcore bands.

Regardless, examining only the sound of the music, Flogging Molly is not simply a folk band. The music is closer to the sound of punk than it is to folk - especially, when they play live (e.g., "Selfish Man").

Some of the members are from Ireland, but they live in CA - although, they have recently been in Ireland, recording the new CD.

They are not part of the fucking hardcore "scene." How thick is your fucking skull? I know Converge and Avail... and if you think Flogging Molly are in the same "scene" as those bands, you have no idea what you are talking about.
And yes, Flogging Molly do have thier roots in punk. I consider them a "punk" band. But Jesus Christ... they are not a hardcore band. I can see how the argument can be made the Dropkick Murphys are a hardcore band, but not Flogging Molly.
And by the way, scenes are lame.

Ok, prick. You seriously have some aggression issues. If you actually read what I wrote, you will see: Flogging Molly is obviously not a hardcore band, but, in my opinion, they are more part of the scene than a band like Enter Shikari.

I'm glad you know 2 of the bands I mentioned. Clearly, it would be strange for Flogging Molly to play with a band like Converge - but they would play with the other bands that I mentioned (the ones still around). I've seen them play with similar bands as Avail, such as Hot Water Music.

Either way, my point was not that FM is a hardcore band. It was simply that Enter Shikari is not a hardcore band. Flogging Molly is a closer match, as is Dredg. Both bands play with post-hardcore artists and came out of the underground scene. Furthermore, I do know what I'm talking about. I grew up in the early 90s NYC hardcore scene and I studied punk/hardcore in school.

For the record, I have nothing against Enter Shikari or their music. I'm not sure I can get into it, but I will try...

I pretty much agree with all of this - although, I'm not sure if I'd really call Dredg hardcore. Doesn't really matter though. I think we are on the same wavelength now...and goshdangit I feel better.

Quicksand hasn't been around for over a decade. All of the members have gone on to do other projects (e.g., Fully, Handsome, etc.) and play with established bands (Seaweed and the Deftones). Walter, the lead singer, went on to various bands (most notably Rival Schools and Walking Concert). He also started a label (Some Records - home to the amazing band, Earl Greyhound) and reunited with his buddies in Gorilla Biscuits for a tour. He lives in Berlin and is working on a solo album. The songs that I've heard are great. He still plays some Quicksand songs live.

I'd just like to say, that this thread here exemplifies what I hate about the "scene" you are all talking about. Hardcore, post-hardcore, punk, etc.

Discussing the minutia behind what makes certain bands fall into certain "scenes" is one thing, but denouncing and insulting others for their opinions or even *GASP* misinformation, is exactly the type of behavior that destroyed the ethos that was the lifeblood of the the almighty, untouchable hardcore scene.

You should be ashamed of yourselves if you are doing anything other than channeling your knowledge and/or opinions positively.

I've played below and above more bands that sound EXACTLY LIKE ES than I could shake a broken drumstick at.
they're not original, they're certainly not hardcore by ANY definition of the word, and, above all, they're not even entertaining. all of the band members, including the vcalist, rely completely on expensive gear and production to hide their total lack of creativity and talent.
being able to flange a double kick pedal doesn't make you a good drummer. neither does downstroking a single note lead or using your fingers on a touchpad to change an envelope filter.
bands should either innovate, or be really talented, or both. ES fails miserably on both fronts.

every one of their songs sounds like the chorus to 'sic transit gloria' by brand new.

if ES fits into ANY category, they're emo.
mother. fucking. emo.

if you disagree, you're a stupid little emo bitch, and if you don't agree with THAT

wanna fight about it, bitch?

There's a lot of Enter Shikari hating going on on these boards but I have to say that now that the Killers aren't playing, Enter Shikari and Deathcab for Cutie are probably the two non-electronic acts that I'm looking forward to the most.

when the fuck were the killers playing?!

wow. ES and deatch cab.
you're one of those emos who give DCFC a bad name.
I'm not a fan of deatch cab, but if I was, I'd be ashamed of the plethora of eyelinered, notebook coveting, bad poetry writing, awful facial piercing sporting emo kids who seem to lump them in with PaTD and MCR

Now if only you'd not hate on Rilo Kiley I might find it in my cold, unforgiving heart to POSSIBLY like you.

Otherwise, QFT.

Also... Why are there still people posting in this thread trying to hype this shitty band? Fucking annoying.

People actually like this band?

aww, still upset about my dislike for jenny?

takeoffs and landing has some good tracks on it, I just am not a personal fan. could have to do with having it played in a loop for two weeks at work by my lesbian boss.

others are free to like RK, though. they won't get any flameage from me.

actually, I'd love to see jenny lewis beat up the singer of ES.
well, I'd like to see just about ANYONE beat that kid up.

so yeah. passive, let's be friends!

I hereby promise this board that I will do a trance remix of enter shikari vs jack johnson, and I will hand out cds in the campground to anyone that wants one.
(normally I never mix trance- I'll make a deliciously ironic exception here. or hey! if we're going annoying, how about a happy hardcore remix?)

you guys pick the JJ and ES songs, since I don't know any.
also, feel free to suggest any other "worst of coachella" mashup ideas.
I'm going out to pick up a new control rig for my setup and I want some challenges!
