View Full Version : not about the headliners, but i still have issues.

I hate Jack Johnson just as much as the rest of you, but he is just one act in a giant lineup... and I never go for the headliners.
That being said I am still not overly happy with the lineup.
I have gone through almost all of the bands including the ones that are new to me and I have run into a couple of issues:
1. A majority of the bands I am excited to see I have seen before
2. Of the New bands that I have discovered, I will be seeing them at a small venue for $10 in the weeks before coachella.
3. There seems to be a lack of diversity. A great majority of the bands fall into either indie rock or dance... yeah that is the festival in general, but we are lacking in the world music and hip-hop. I always like checking out music that stretches my taste.
4. Lack of Second Tiered acts. It seems like subheadliners have been upgraded to headliners, and with that happening we get a handfull of subheadliners and the rest small bands. I would say 90% of the lineup plays in sub 2000 venues... at least here in Portland.
All said and done, I am happy, and know I will have a good time, but there are only a few acts that this moment that I expect to blow my find for the first time... I can only wait and pray to jeebus that GV improves the lineup... they have never let me down before.

Nice sig, btw.
I basically agree with you, as seen here: http://www.coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14831
But yeah, you still going?

I have to agree. As I've posted before in another thread, last year I had 25 acts on my list of who I wanted to see with a couple more I recognized and would see if I had a spare moment. This year that number has shrunk to 10 I want to see and every other performer are people I've never heard of. From a festival perspective it's the first time I've known such a low percentage and have wanted to truly see so little of a lineup.
I'm going, but it's not going to be as fun since the majority of my time will be spent wandering aimlessly trying to find something to listen to to kill time. I'd much rather ben running to the next show I've been dying to see.

see this year is the opposite for me. This year there are way more acts id rather see. last year there were just more known acts.

i agree with the lack of diversity man. indie rock is not really ROCK .. or metal ya know .. basically something that is alittle more heavy and ya im not a big hip hop fan but i would have liked to see some hip hop acts that i have heard about like last year they had ghosstface killa from wu tang and he put on an awsome SHOW .. not enought rock this year tooo much dance and electronic. but then again honestly i havent checked out many of the other bands yet so i ll check them out and hopefully the festival will still be great im going anyways so fuck it

I do not see how you can say that jack Johnson and Roger Waters are subheadliner material. Jack Johnson was sub-headlining this festival five and six years ago and Roger Waters sells out multi-night runs at the Hollywood Bowl. People say this same shit every year, they don't seem to understand that the girth of acts grows.

dude, i disagree with almost everything you said... maybe they arent' names, but there's at least a dozen hip-hop artists and a half dozen 'world music' artists this year...
and dude, don't bitch about it when you plan on seeing these bands the weeks leading up to Coach in small venues in Portland (you dont' have to, you can wait for Coach)... do you expect these smaller bands NOT to schedule other dates around it in order to fund the trip??
and as far as the 90% lineup playing venues of 2000 or less... i could easily say that about LAST year as well: other than the headliners, who was big enough to play something larger than the Roseland or the Crystal Ballroom??

As much as I love Portishead, I can admit that them headlining is like if in 2004 the Pixies headlined and there was no Radiohead.

i would disagree with you. everyone has opinions, so lets all believe we are the one's with the right answers. my answer is that these bands are not headline quality. none of the past headliners have made a soundtrack for a kids movie.. none of the past headliners have played state fairs for an album they released decades ago.. these bands are subpar. it is a professional opinion. ask any music writer in the press. i know because i am a freelance music writer. the consensus for this year (ie - entertainment weekly, la times, pitchforkmedia) is that it's a disappointment.
so we aren't alone in our opinions. stop trying to defend coachella. they know better and fans know better.

well, i'll go ahead and disagree with you about knowing how to read...
not ONCE did i mention ANYTHING about ANY headliner... and not ONCE did i even bring up Johnson's name (nor refer to him)... in FACT, i wasnt' defending anything about the fest (DUH, look at my sig), i WAS debunking the opinions of the person who started this thread... and if you had read his post (or mine) and weren't a complete retard, you'd see that...

i care not either way on anyone else's opinions, everyone is entitled to them... i do care about logic and facts though (and as a supposed music writer, i hope you would too...)
NOTHING you said in response to my post had any truth (or even logic) in it, it was like you just typed random words or pasted a random post from the board hehe... and i am simply defending my honor...
However, let me retort: Portishead & The Verve for the first time on U.S. soil in ten years IS an exclusive (and probably more so than Rage last year)... and since i haven't yet seen Kraftwerk, i'll call that 'special'... what's 'sad' is a person who spends this much time on the board of a fest whose lineup you hate and aren't going to...
and btw, freelance = unemployed...

My point, you dumb fuck, is that it shouldn't matter to US whether or not the Pixies or Portishead are "headliner material," because every year the headliners mostly suck. At least 50 percent suck. This year, 33 percent suck. FUCKING IMPROVEMENT.

anyway. portishead. i will give you. the verve.. well i'm jaded, so i won't go there. and kraftwerk. sorry but they already paid them to come out here and they haven't released anything to merrit a replay in my opinion.
and i'm still going. i get one of those nifty press passes, so i don't have to pay. i get to complain for free. what a world.

i tend to agree with you... while one could argue whether last year had better headliners or not, ad nauseum... i find that there are fewer bands this year i plan to AVOID than last year (which had several)... so far, the only one i disapprove of is Johnson (which i'll probably end up watching anyway with the chick i'm taking... unless Slim's spinning at that time, then fuck her, she can meet me after at the tesla coil hehe)

hahaha... points taken. but, for me at least, i missed Kraftwerk, so i really couldn't give a fuck about all the others who didn't :)
ugh, i suppose i could attempt to get in with a press pass too, but if i did, my station would probably expect something to show for it, and i'm gonna enjoy my weekend, not spend it working...
yes, yes, i was being ironic when i called it 'working' hehe

1. A majority of the bands I am excited to see I have seen before
I have the same problem here. Two of the best concerts i've ever seen live have been by Les Savy Fav and Animal Collective. The "lower-tier" bands in the line up are acceptable. These are the bad ass bands that you pin ball around the festival all day and enjoy, one after the next leading up the the BIG climax in....drumroll please....Jack Johnson and Portishead and Love and Rockets. Any one who knows music, which should be most of the people on this board should recognize this problem with this years lineup. Be a stalwart coachella defender all you want, its not going to fix the fact that ALL of the headliners are a bust (except for kraftwerk).

Let me break it down for you, since you fail at logic and reading comprehension:
Saturday 2004 vs Saturday 2006:
Wilco = Death Cab for Cutie (Death Cab has more mainstream reach but both have equal appeal among festival-goers due to the large percentage of young OC Fans being down with the Cab)
Kraftwerk = Kraftwerk
Pixies = Portishead
Radiohead = ???
$75 < $90
If it's that important to have Radiohead play Nuchella instead of Coachella, there's always R.E.M. They should be playing and are a good headliner choice: they've never played and highly influential. Morrissey? Not every potential headliner is Green Day, you know. So'd rather pay more money to have no headliner than pay the same amount of money for the same lineup with a headliner that has a 50/50 chance of being good, is that it?

Portishead is the act I'm second most excited about seeing, so I don't really mind that they're headlining, I don't know why you have such a beef. It's silly, it's immature, you're just reacting out of ridiculously stupid instinct instead of actually thinking about the issue. There are other costs besides bands. This is a music AND ARTS festival. Not to mention the fact that they got what's going to be the most impressive performance in Coachella history for Sunday. So why should I or you for that matter be upset that Portishead is headlining? I'd prefer Portishead to most headliners of years past. Why do you insist on being such a whiny fucking bitch about it, acting like you have some right to feel betrayed by the people who work their asses off to provide us with the coolest thing that happens in any of our lives once a year? Have a little faith, you prick. And stop blaming everything on APW. Maybe Radiohead didn't want to repeat themselves.

right if you want to see a hip hop festival, rock the bells is a great alternative
however there is plenty of rap to see here, and we should be grateful for what we are given
except for me wishing that the avett brothers would come back again this year, they were so good
