So over the past two days, i've been getting into the new music, and holy crap have I found some good stuff. But the best i've found would have to be The National. I've only the heard the album Boxer, but oh mah gawd its so good. With that being said, I took a look at some of their live shows on youtube. I was very very impressed with how awesome their shows. They have a lot of energy, a fresh sound, and an overall positive atmosphere.
If your a die hard fan, recommend other albums to me as I've only heard this one. But I chose it cuz it was pitchfork's top 10 albums of 2007, and holy penis does it deserve that spot.

I would recommend getting Alligator next. Their first, self-titled album is very good too.

I would recommend Gogol Bordello. Their gypsie punk sound is something that nobody is doing right now, so not only do I recommend you check their set out at the Coachella, but do try and listen to their last two albums.

What the fuck do they have to do with the Decemberists? They're a billion times better and don't sound even remotely similar.
Anyway, I saw them live once three years ago and they were really amazing live. I didn't like their new album that much, though.

Or not, Gogol Bordello is entirely unlistenable. Dont waste your time. Bands to check out if you havn't heard em, Les Savy Fav, The Black Lips, DeVotchKa, Black Kids, Cut Copy, Animal Collective...to get you started...

I think decemberists and national are both great but each stand on their own. Ive seen The National twice at the Troubadour in Hollywood and once again at Bonnaroo in 07. Check out the song Mr. November off of Aligator, they usually close with that song!

National and Decemberists are quite different. I'm not sure how I'd order these albums, but they are all amazing: Boxer, Alligator, and Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers.

Wrong. I bet The National will not suck at coachella ala Decemberists 07

The National are amazing, but I don't get the relevance with the Decemberists (who I love as well).
Get Alligator and Cherry Tree after Boxer. It's all gold.

I love the National. Definitely check out Boxer and Alligator if you haven't. Both are awesome. And they indeed are good live too. I saw them the last time they were in LA at the Wiltern and they sounded good for being there, since usually I think smaller "indie" bands don't sound good there.

I don't get the title of this thread. But yes, the Boxer is quite good and they are just about the only act I want to see Friday.

not true. they're a band most people have to let grow on them. but their songwriting and lyrics are incredibly clever and gorgeous.
and i think the similarity stops between decemberists and national at the "we're kind of a mid-level indie band" label
i recommend the Cherry Tree EP if you like Boxer. But everything they've put it out is awesome

Whoever mentioned Gogol, good call - they're an awesome band and their live show is fantastic. They were awesome at Bonnaroo last year, as well.
Check out their 2nd to last cd, "Gypsy Punk: World Tour"

You're complaining about Gogol Bordello being unlistenable and you like Animal Collective? That's fucking hysterical.

The Decemberists sucked last year. I saw part of their set, but it wasn't very good. We went over to Kings of Leon instead.

I should have done that too but I love The Decemberists...they played too much off of their new album tho I would've liked to hear some older stuff
