OK - so the iPod Touch is now 32 gigabytes - but at $499, is this too pricey? Should I buy one now, wait until there is a 64 GB model, or wait until the price drops at least $100?

nice. I wonder if it's much larger physically. it still pales in comparison to the 160 gb you can get with a classic, but it's a huge improvement over the 16 gb.
500 does sound a bit pricey though. I'd hesitate.

it won't bump up to the 64GB for a long while. because the touch is ssd it would be incredibly expensive right now.
I'm just surprised the iphone is still without 3G. Once it has it, I'm buying. Nice to know they are still interesting in bumping up the harddrive space on it though. Ideally it would have 32gb and 3G when I bought it. I'm willing to hold out a while too...

I was actually waiting until they made the Touch a larger HD.
Preferred at LEAST 20gb, but 32 is great.
But not for $500.
I'd hold off 'til the price drops.
I'll still use my 5g black video ipod 'til then...

I want a third party app. to be released for the iPhone that enables you to connect to a remote server that contains all your songs and has a user-friendly interface for streaming those songs.

It'll happen soon. Apple is releasing the iPhone SDK (developer's kit) to third-party developers this month. Since there are already people who have hacked together apps for jailbroken iPhones, I'm expecting a flood of third-party apps within a couple of months.

itouch with 32 gb is still not worth gettting. that's like buying a macbook air when you could get a pro.
i would get an iphone if you need the wireless internet and have a separate mp3 player like the 160 or 80 gb classic. the 80gb it's a generous size, and is pretty cheap (249+tax). my last ipod was an 80gb video ipod just got stolen last month. thinking about getting the 160gb.

i have a 60 gig Ipod photo, got it right when it came out. Spent way too much on it and its starting to shit on me. Never had a problem with my Ipod before, but now it is skipping songs. New stuff i upload is fine, no problem. But stuff ive had on my Ipod for years just wont play. I'll hit play album, it will bring up the song and then instantly go to the song right after that, which wont play either.
When I plug it into the computer I can listen to the songs fine though.
Anyone else have this problem? I sorta want to sell it to get the 160 classic, but im thinking about holding off and going with that sexy Ipod touch when it gets cheaper

the existing approach is to use a web based system through safari. For example, EyeTV 3.0 allows you to stream recorded video onto a PC, touch, or iPhone. When the SDK is released, their should be even more options. I want an Iphone/touch version of Salling Clicker!

i heard the problem on 3G chipsets is power consumption. My buddies ATT/HTC Tilt has terrible battery life, even though its large and clunky.
what does jailbroken mean?
a "jailbroken" Iphone has hacked firmware so non-certified 3rd party apps can be installed. Each time Apple releases new official firmware, it breaks previous unauthorized firmware modification efforts.

Have you tried restoring the iPod to factory settings and resyncing, or syncing to another library? On a mac you can mount the iPod as a firewire disc and check it with the pre-installed disc utility. You ned to determine if it is the quick wheel or the hard drive that has failed....

i would buy a new ipod 160gb if there was actually some decent software out there. iTunes blows, Winamp likes to freeze 75% of the time, and well, everything else isn't even worth talking about. Plus I don't commute on the ferries and stuff no more, so I don't have time to just sit down with a ipod and listen....usually when I got my headphones on, they're plugged into the computer. But maybe I should get one for the car ride down? I dunno yet.

I will most likely update to the new TOUCH ipods when my current ipod starts to die out.
I have noticed that the battery life isn't the way it used to be.
I'd prolly get a new one instead of getting the battery replaced.
But I think I will still hold out for a larger capacity TOUCH. 32 sounded ok at first, but I dunno.
40 Would have been great.
But still...$500? I'll wait til the price drops.

it started to poop out for me at about 700. I'm on a mac book pro, and part of the problem might also be that I constantly have quite a few apps open that do some serious business, so I can't really afford to have my music app be a resource hog because of my library. That's why I opt for VLC. I use spotlight to track the album I want and then drag and drop. leaves system resources free for the important stuff.

It has all been listened to at least once.
Before the music goes into my library, I listen to it. The exception to this might be the 8gbs of Beethoven that I'm not quite finished with yet.
A lot of it would be tough to identify the song on random play, but I'm willing to bet I could generally get the artist right. A huge amount of this stuff is classical or experimental and once you spend some time with it, it's pretty stuck in there.

all iTunes is, is a glorified Quicktime, which hogs up as much processor power and RAM available. Not only is it trying to play your mp3's but its trying to add 1 second fade in/outs at each song during playback, trying to caterogrize and play all your video files, link and connect to the internet in order to get you to go to the store and grab album art and news related current events, and trying to get you to download the latest trailers in 1080p...it's all total bullshit. They're basically trying to take over your computer for all your media needs (running a bunch of shit in the background etc...), while ignoring the fact, that in order to do that, about 95% of the computers will crash and freeze up and be unusable due to all that garbage and wasted resources.
Winamp is like the same thing, just a tad less worse. Just give me a simple program that will
A) play mp3's and .flac files
B) allow you to tag files
C) import folders into library
nothing else.

I used to have a lot of problems with iTunes on Windows, but that was < 2006 and on laptops running win2k with very little memory. Haven't had any problems in a couple of years, with up to maybe 400-500gb in my library. These days I don't keep as much in iTunes library and use it only for syncing. What's the point of keeping a few hundred gb in iTunes when my ipod can only hold 60?
I still haven't managed to fill up the 60gb video that I've had for a couple of years. I'm lazy and listen to the same 30 or so albums all the time.
