I watched What Dreams May Come again last night because Jennie said it was so good. The first time I watched it several years ago, I thought it was so bad that I couldn't finish it. My husband and I tried watching it again (with the experience of having tried psychedelics in the meantime under our belts) and understood it a bit better, and it wasn't quite so bad. The acting was still pretty bad, but the visuals and the concept were more interesting. I wanted to ponder it for a while this time.

Amy, I appreciate what you said about WDMC. It's a ridiculous, shmultzy movie and it's barely defendable that I like it so much. Here's my problem that I can't bring to the movie thread because it shows my ass. I am a concept movie person. I dismiss bad acting, plot (to a certain extent), and other typically critique-able movie points if I like the concept of a movie. This is why I can love movies like What Dreams May Come, Event Horizon, Contact, and Cube (for example). Even 1408. If I like what it's about (usually space, faith, or horror) - I'm in. Despite the flaws. I liked the idea of heaven in WDMC. I liked the visuals and the idea of what hell is and what heaven should be. I found it imaginative and spiritually right on. But it is insanely cheesy. I loved it for the same reasons I loved The Fountain - the only difference is The Fountain was done in such a way that it could be appreciated by concept people and movie people alike. You know - artistically sound from a conceptual point of view as well as cinematically.

Anyway - I'm glad you tried it again. Hallucinogenics would definitely enhance that movie, I bet. The one and only time I did acid, we watched the made for tv movie Sybil. I have no idea why. It completely messed with me - I love that freaking movie, but I ended up convinced that Sally Field looked like my mother and suspecting that my mom had some sort of multiple personality disorder by the end. It was just a poor choice.

We didn't take anything while watching it -- I just meant that after having tried acid we could be more open to the unusual themes in the movie.

My husband and I also thought of The Fountain while watching WDMC, but in comparing them, we thought that WDMC explained things away too much while The Fountain made you try to figure out what the hell was going on which was more engaging.

I really liked the idea that the husband needed to experience his wife's hell with her (both figurative and literal hells) to help her escape from hell and help her come back to him.
