I haven't seen a film that truly scared me since I was a little kid. The only one that came remotely close in recent days was The Descent. I thought it was suspenseful, had some good jump out of your seat moments & could've worked just as well, if not better, if the monsters hadn't shown up.

Other than that I recently watched The Tale of Two Sisters which is a Korean horror pic. It was a good film, but didn't live up to the expectations my friend had built up for me. not all that scary.

[REC] was another disappointment, but I'm sure people will find something to like about the American remake Quarantine.

The only horror film I've been on a mission to find a copy of that which I think can be genuinely scary is The Butcher

The Descent was awesome. I need to buy that flick.

If I could just have a decent zombie/end-of-the-world movie, I'd be happy too. The thing is, I don't like the zombie movies for the gore--I like the end-of-the-world shtick.

And give me a good ghost story. The Orphanage was halfway decent, and I was surprised that I really liked The Grudge.

And goddamnit, what about the vampires? I liked Underworld I, but Underworld II can go eat a bowl of dicks. That Twilight movie looks totally gay. I'm waiting until I can d/l that new vampire tv series with Anna Paquin--that could be good. There's a void left in me after I got through all 7 seasons of Buffy.

Near Dark is a good vampire flick from the 80's. If you've never seen it, you should.

Also, if you've never seen Takashi Miike's Audition, you should. Probably the best horror film of the past decade or so.

KungFuJoe
09-11-2008, 04:13 PM
It's pretty simple. Man is kidnapped by gang of vampires after woman vampire bites him. He begins to turn into one of them, but resists becoming like them. He is forced by the gang to learn how to kill & be like them over the course of one week or else it's his head. It's kind of a cheesy love story at parts, but is a fun action flick by Katherin Bigelow.

BUg is great. I put it on my list after my friend said it was the worst movie he's ever seen. It's rather a hate it or love it type movie. Creepy, beautifully shot and directed and Ashely Judd is amazing in it.

I finished Paprika last night which was some amazing anime. Unfortuantly, the very relaxed pace worked against it, but for some absolutly gorgeous anime fantasty sequences, Paprika is worth checking out.

Has anyone been reading the buzz on "The Wrestler", Aronofsky's new film? Apparently Mickey Rourke is a lock of an oscar nod. Variety and Roger Ebert among many other critics are raving about it. And Mararsa Tomei plays a stripper, apparently.

I'm getting "Friday" from netflix, which I'm embarassed to say i've never seen. I do love Next Friday though. Seen that one too many times.

They are hit and miss for me (hated Raising Arizona and Barton Fink)... I thought it was a blast. More like Fargo than anything else in my mind, but way over the top. It's undoubtedly a spy caper, but there are no spies... It's totally a genre film, but unlike anything of it's kind. I think it's their best comedy since "The Big Lebowski."

I have yet to watch the American release for Night Watch, but from my understanding there was a key character cut out of it. Not to say it wasn't a confusing film to begin with, but with what gets lost in translation & cutting out a somewhat key storyline I'm sure it becomes more uneven. I'm going to have to watch it to see how it stands up compared to the orignal release.

There is a long list of the differnces between the orignal russian release & the international release on wiki -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Watch_(2004_film)

The main one I'm referring to that probably takes a lot away from the film is this:

The character "Ignat" who was played by Gosha Kutsenko has been cut out completely. In the Russian cut Ignat is a Light Incubus capable of seducing any woman. Geser sends Simeon to fetch Ignat in order to seduce Svetlana so that she would "relax" and lose her vortex of damnation, or at least, say who cursed her. Ignat is reluctant, as he is with his girlfriend, and has to marry her the next day, but has to agree. As Svetlana runs out of coffee, she goes to a night supermarket, and they meet. He follows her home and stays with her. But when, in a moment of weakness, he mentions his forthcoming wedding, Svetlana freaks out, and Geser calls him off. Ignat spends the rest of the movie locked inside the Gorsvet truck.

As for Speed Racer. it was released on dvd yesterday. Definately rent it. Especially if you have a blue ray.

No 3 Stooges before my movie. That would have been awesome. I was rather stoned and would have loved that. Instead I had to watch that propaganda Kid Rock National Guard video shite.

I watched Colverfield on Monday. The beginning of the attack was really hard to watch, too eerily familiar. Conceptually I thought it was cool and the special effects were well done, not too over the top.

I should've stated that I mildly enjoyed Corpse Bride, its not my favorite movie or anything, it just kept me entertained...I felt like the songs in Sweeney Todd were sung by a bunch of actors who can't really sing very well....I have to admit, I saw it with my brother & sister, and it did inspire a wonderfully twisted singalong, in mockery of we had just witnessed, on the ride home

I don't have any experience with the actual musical "Sweeney Todd" only the film version...it was alright, it just became a little repetitive and ridiculous after a while, the same thing kept occurring over and over, it lost my interest

Can he come up with anything original anymore??? Planet of the Apes, Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd...now Alice in Wonderland??

Off the top of my head, no. But he has come up with a lot of ideas. Well, come to think of it, hmm,

Pee-Wee-Not his
Batman-Duh
Ed Wood-not really
BeetleJuice-Was this his idea?
Mars Attacks-Trading Cards 1st!
Nightmare Before...-YES!

I guess he's been doing his vision of other peoples ideas from the get go.. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is my childhood right there. I saw that movie sooooo many times as a kid. All of Burtons movies really. I mustve been 5 when Batman Returns came out but I still rememebr going to the movies to watch it. I think this is why he's been my favorite director

Remakes never work. Nevereverever, I loved that they respected the original by keeping certain things but just workign through their own vision. It seems to me the big problem is Depp's performance. It'll make it or break it. I loved everything about it. His makeup, clothes, hair, he was so much more sadistic than Wilder. In my opinion we have two very different but equally awesome Wonka's now

Samuel L.'s best acting is Pulp Fiction. You should all know that.

I watched The Killing of A Chinese Bookie recently. It wasn't the optimum viewing experience because there was some loudness surrounding us, but I loved it. It's a definite Cassavetes film in both look and movement. He keeps you at arm's length from Cosmo for almost the whole time, but at the very end, when he gives his speech to the weirdo and the strippers, you finally connect with the character, which I thought was brilliant. I love the way that man does film.

In 2004, he started all these threads about how Coachella would never sell out, and he started to be very very hostile about it. As I recall, Pot had just started posting and he, as well as Phil the Beastie and a few other really old regulars, ran him into the ground before it even sold out. When it did, he had no chance.

Also, weird little factoid. In 2004, people were excited about Muse as a small band from Europe that were playing midday. Quite a few posters hadn't heard of them, and they wound up being one of the two band I knew I had to see as a result of the board. The other was Broken Social Scene, and, of course, they played at roughly the same time.

I saw "The Man From London," Bela Tarr's latest film. It is quite different in some ways from his previous efforts, but very similar in others.

His stylistic choices remain relatively consistent, but the plot is much simpler (at least at first glance). It's a fairly devastating film, and it takes a while to creep up on you.

Comic actor Sacha Baron Cohen ran into trouble when he stormed a catwalk at a Milan fashion show, say reports.

The Borat star, who was dressed as comedy creation Bruno, jumped on to the runway and was chased by security.

He was handed over to police after officials managed to waylay him, according to the ANSA news agency in Italy.

The footage may be used in upcoming movie Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America For The Purpose Of Making Heterosexual Male, which is scheduled for release next year.

Cohen will also produce and possibly star in legal comedy The Accidentes, penned by his Borat co-writer Peter Baynham.

I can't wait. Bruno had some great stuff in the show.

Choke----wasn't good, but some hilarious, laugh out loud scenes. When it hit it was really, really funny and Sam Rockwell was awesome in it but a scattershot mess of an actual story. to be expected really. worked a lot better in the book.

Burn After Reading---Am I missing something? I can't believe everyone is loving this movie. I think I actually hated it. Awesome cast, Clooney and Malkovich were terrific, but it was not only boring but unfunny and antognizing annoying at the same time. I kept trying to get into it and I just disliked it more and more. looks interesting...lots of Gogol Bordello

http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/filthandwisdom/

Madonna’s directorial debut, FILTH AND WISDOM, is a hilariously sexy tale of three roommates who must delve into mischievous and naughty behavior in pursuit of bigger and brighter futures. A Ukrainian immigrant, A.K. (Eugene Hutz), finances his dreams of ‘trans-continental superstardom’ with his band, Gogol Bordello, by turning tricks as a role-playing cross dresser. As A.K. literally whips the privileged of London into shape, he also secretly pines for the object of his affection, Holly (Holly Weston), an aspiring ballerina looking for her big break while moonlighting as a slippery stripper. Meanwhile, Juliette (Vicky Mclure) steals medicine from her pharmaceutical job in hopes of quenching her dreams of helping Africa’s youth. FILTH AND WISDOM is every bit as erotic and playful as it is poignant and touching, revealing the universal struggles we all face in our pursuits of happiness.

As A.K. literally whips the privileged of London into shape, he also secretly pines for the object of his affection, Holly (Holly Weston), an aspiring ballerina looking for her big break while moonlighting as a slippery stripper. Meanwhile, Juliette (Vicky Mclure) steals medicine from her pharmaceutical job in hopes of quenching her dreams of helping Africa’s youth. FILTH AND WISDOM is every bit as erotic and playful as it is poignant and touching, revealing the universal struggles we all face in our pursuits of happiness.

hmmm, i dont really know how i feel about this upon first viewing:

1) Sell out?

2) Extremely Awesome that EH is gonna be in a movie?

3) Weird/awesome that somehow Gogol is incorporated into the mix?

I really hope Madonna doesnt fuck this up, otherwise i think it should be a wild ride, get these awesome fuckers some exposure that i feel they deserve.

I'm opting for 2 and 3

Watched the Apartment a few days back. I'm still a sucker for the old classics. Haven't seen it in probably 10 years. Still fantastic performances from Lemmon and MacClaine. Amazing to think that this movie was somewhat controversial when it was released in 1960. It was dated in some ways, but not much. Thematically, still holds up very well, and I thouroughly enjoyed it. Billy Wilder's best flick, in my opinion.

Deer Hunter is an amazing movie. I need to re-watch that. It is such a broad movie. It almost cheapens it to call it a "Vietnam movie." There's a large chunk that takes place in Vietnam but it would be a fantastic picture of the Vietnam-era US even if it ended before they left for the war.

I thought it was made well & liked some of it's stylistic elements. wish it would've taken more of the doc style approach it seemed to incorporate at certain moments. almost had a Werner Herzog type of feel to it. not a bad film, but ultimately i found it too redundant. not something i'd go out of my way to watch again.

I seriously haven't been in a theather with so many people laughing so hard since...Borat? Maybe Knocked up? it felt a bit uneven to not mention Buddist/Hindi religions but hard to fill it in when theres so many other (mostly Jesus based) religions to make fun of.

Synechdochne, NY looks incredible.

I actually saw it on Friday. C. Kauffman came to my school and spoke/screened the film. He was super amazing, and I have a great deal more respect for him as an individual now after hearing him discuss his writing process, etc. However, I'm still trying to decide my thoughts on the movie.

The first 15 minutes are amazing. Wonderfully written. Then, the movie goes somewhere you don't expect it to go. A lot of weird things happen. Time moves but is never acknowledged. It's odd. Hoffman is glorious, as always, and Samantha Morton is surprising. (Although I kept giggling "LOL it's the girl from the Joy Division movie!")

Also, if you know what "synechdoche" means, the movie and the title will make more sense.

I saw Nick & Norah's Infinitely Long and Pointless Title last night. I wasn't expecting anything, though the heaps of praise are a bit unwarranted. It's just a cute, sappy awkward teen movie with a lot of gratuitous band name dropping. (IE: Bishop Allen plays, hipster NYC venues are frequented (CRASH MANSION LOL), rooms are decorated with Dinosaur Jr. and Vampire Weekend, and Devendra Banhardt has a cameo.) Michael Cera is forever typcast now. But all in all, it was a good way to kill time.
