Oddly, looking through my CDs, I've got AFX AND Polygon Window, but no actual Aphex Twin albums.
This is my favorite..."Quoth" by Polygon Window. Hopefully this is why he was supposedly looking for drummers.

I've been waiting for any live Aphex Twin set for years. Maybe something will resurface soon with all the new discussions.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think he'd get added to the lineup. This performance will be on par with Kraftwerk, Matmos, and Cornelius. For me anyway.
And Windowlicker is a CLASSIC tune and will always take me to that "special place".

Have you seen the one of his face? It's pretty detailed, and my roommate pulled up the spectral with a program, so I've seen it form. I buy it. My roommate also has a program where you can turn images into spectral information.

03-12-2008, 09:54 PM
Yeah, I forgot the names of them, but there are programs out there that can insert images into sound spectrums. I'm pretty sure thats what Venetian Snares with the cat one.
But if Aphex didnt use that program to make the face, then, damn. Thats talented.

That's the point. to be detailed. you just have to insert the digital image as the spectrogram in the software and it will convert it to digital sound.

So wait... you can put images into these spectral programs... and digital sound comes out? And then you can use that sound, and turn it into music? But when you add layers onto it... wouldn't it distort the original image?

IDM. This is not up for debate.
Anything is up for debate. Try dancing to Next Heap With or Ventolin or any of the piano tracks off Drukqs. Aphex Twin is so much more than any genre. Intelligent, yes they are. Dance, sometimes, yes. Music, yes. But still a big fat gaping hole in the IDM pigeonhole.
I think that's the beauty of true artists though. It's hard to pin them down to being one genre or another.

From Allmusic.com:
One wants to believe in Brian and Karen Tregaskin, because who wouldn't be charmed by the heartwarming tale of two Cornish musicians who find themselves at the center of a bidding war won by the Aphex Twin's label? A star is born, and all that. But forget romance: denials abounding to the contrary, the Tuss is Aphex. Richard D. James has returned and after an initial EP, Confederation Trough, which got the conspiracy theories going, Rushup Edge finds the frenetic hypergenius still cackling his way around life and having fun with his international cult as he goes. Having reinvented a slew of perceptions of what electronic music could do as much as kicking against the worship of new clichés he ended up establishing, James' side-step into guerrilla releases and stone-faced responses makes perfect sense: he's been using similar obfuscations right from the start. But Rushup Edge is, dare it be said, the most straightforwardly warm sounding thing he's done since the early '90s. If it's hardly straight-up, four-to-the-floor house or something similar, the swooping melody bursts and the frenetic but not crushing basslines of the opening "Synthacon 9," for example, counterbalance the sudden jerks in rhythm and the mind-dances-faster-than-the-feet feeling as a whole. A short album -- six tracks at 32 minutes total -- Rushup Edge might best be heard with that debut EP, but on its own it is a classic "hit it quick and be done with it" effort, with each song containing delights that sometimes put a smile on one's face just for being so immediate. "Shiz Ko E" could just about be something from Chicago 1988 (after being put through a wringer) while the rising vocal squelches and serene electronic sighs on "Last Rushup 10" are no less entrancing. It's not a revisiting of the past, but a return to some of its spirit that turns out very well. And it has a song titled "Death Fuck," which somehow says it all.

umm yeah, because allmusic.com said so. the tuss said they are not rdj, and that doesnt prove anything either.
my only evidence is that he has played a lot of unreleased Tuss tracks in his shows since a couple of years ago, and like the article said both of them have a lot of similarities in their productions. some tuss tracks sound like an analord ep, which is why I think that if they aren't the tregaskin, it might be luke and richard playing around, and why not tom taking part on it. just for fun. but everything at this point is pure speculation.

I'm with you, heard OF them, never heard them/him. Everyone's blowing a fuckin gasket you'd think it's jesus christ reincarnated and put in a seminal electronic act.
it's a him, not a them...
It's hard to pin them down to being one genre or another.
and alot of his stuff is pure Ambient, you can't possibly classify it as anything else...

I've known of Richard for years now, but I kinda have no idea what to expect for his live set.
I mean, I've seen a few youtube videos, but still...
While I know of like his whole discography, am I asking too much that he mixes in "Windowlicker" and some point in his set?
Not to say thats his best work ever, but I feel that I MUST dance to that shit in the Sahara!

I've never seen him, but some of my british friends who've had the opportunity to see him a few times have said the sets can vary in mood, but be prepared to have your face melted and your eardrums torn.

He would be PERFECT for sunday. Before or after Justice (as I kinda don't have any interest in seeing Roger Waters...)....
Sunday (for me) pretty much belongs to Justice and The Streets (unless Goldfrapp or Aphex is on that day...).

yeah, but for the other 50,000 that DO want to see Roger Waters, that would suck ass... and i don't think GV is that fuckin retarded...
with Aphex being billed as high as he is, he isn't likely to go on before Justice or Digweed, so Friday is the only day that makes sense... (Aphex fans and JJ fans are just not the same people, and Aphex won't go on during Portishead or Kraftwerk... i guarantee it...)

I'm going to TRY to explain why the hype.
Aphex Twin much like prodigy, orbital, portishead, underworld, and massive attack are electronic music icons. His label is warp records who produces most of largely known "glitch" artists of today. (ie squarepusher). Hes sort of like a renegade scientist of sound. Wiki him. im sure youll get some stuff.

Some interesting tidbits about Aphex Twin:
1) He used to (and may still) own a tank.
2) He at one point said his favorite drink was coffee refiltered through coffee grinds 10-12 times until it became a thick sludge.
3) At a show he put sandpaper on a turntable and mixed with it.
4) He was asked to do a remix for the Lemonheads. One day a messenger came to his house to pick up the remix but he completely forgot to do it. He picked up the first cassette he found laying around his house and gave it to them. A couple days later he got a call from the Lemonheads saying how much they loved the remix.
5) All or none of these things may be true because James is completely full of shit and likes to throw people and the media for a loop. I read about all of these things like 10 years ago from legit sources when I used to be a big Aphex fan.
If you want to understand why he is so good listen to Xtal off the first Selected Ambient Works album and then immediately put on Come to Daddy of the Come to Daddy EP. The contrast in styles and the fact that he was so influential in many different styles of electronic music is why many people consider him the godfather of modern techno.
For good measure listen to 4 of the Richard D. James album. That is my favorite song of his.
Here is to praying he plays SATURDAY!!!!

continued...
6) He apparently owns a russian submarine as well
7) He also claims to only sleep 3-4 hours a night
8) He received a national diploma in engineering, but according to his teachers, all he did in class was listen to his own mixes on headphones.
9) Richard claims to have produced sound on a Sinclair ZX81 (a machine with no sound hardware) at the age of 11:
"When I was 11, I won 50 pounds in a competition for writing this program that made sound on a ZX81. You couldn't make sound on a ZX81, but I played around with machine code and found some codes that retuned the TV signal so that it made this really weird noise when you turned the volume up" (this is from wiki, a source came with it)
again, take everything with a grain of salt.
