Theres a lot of hype about Animal Collective and I want to get into them, I got the album Strawberry Jam and was not very impressed(just my opinion). Is their a better album of theirs to check out or is it that if I didn't like that I won't like the rest? ? ? ?

If you don't like the album, you will probably hate their live show. They are all over the place, even more chaotic than on their albums. Check out some youtubes if you are still into them, Feels is a good album to check out.

Feels and Sung Tongs are both better. The new Water Curses EP is a more successful version of whatever they were going for on Strawberry Jam.

They are likely Outdoor Theatre again, no? Played OT 4:25-5:10 in '06, one would assume they would get a better time slot this year. I'm worried about conflicts.

check out the song "Leaf House" off of Sung Tongs; it's what got me into them...
Some of their stuff I don't like at all, but a lot of it I absolutely love.

Feels & Sung Tongs
Those were the only two albums I knew when I saw them in '06 at Coachella. They tend to play a bunch of new stuff that isn't even out when they play live, so there isn't too much you can listen to that will prepare you for their live show.
I wouldn't go too far back into their catalogue unless you all of a sudden love them for life (which happens often with Animal Collective). Otherwise you should be good with Sung Tongs, Feels & Strawberry Jam. (And the EP which I'm upset I haven't gotten yet O_o

Feels is the best one to start out with.

it took me a while to really get into AC, and now, they're one of my favorite contemporary bands.
'feels' is definately the best in the catelouge for a newbie. i want to reccomend 'sung tongs' but that might be too intense.

I really like animal collective. I hear that they suck live. Still going to see them though.

I can't understand why people (especially Animal Collective fans!) DON'T like Strawberry Jam.
They managed to make a more coherent album without sacrificing their sound.
I mean, come on! 'Reverend Green' 'Cuckoo' '#1' 'Chores' 'Fireworks' !!
..And I love Feels. And I love Sung Tongs.
And Water Curses is awesome.
And Strawberry Jam is fantastic.
And they are fucking great.

Since nobody's mentioned it..."Winters Love" from Sung Tongs is probably the most beautiful songs ever written. Weird that it came from AC, but that's what is so impressive about it.
If you don't like any of their other stuff, you'll still love that song.

Animal Collective will be a show I would hate to miss. The chaos on Strawberry Jam is tripled live, I'm sure.

So is the verdict pretty much that they suck live? They are definitely one of the bands I wanna see but...if they suck live...

They're currently the best touring live band available. Not sure if that qualifies as sucking.

I don't mind Animal Collective, but give me a break with "the best touring live band available" comment.

hm. i don't know if they "suck." it's just a much different live show than most people are used to.
i, for one, will be front and center during their set.

I wouldn’t say they "suck" live. It just takes a minuet to adjust to their live show. I'll say it again if you don’t like their albums, you will not like them live.

im a huge fan and i consider it my least favorite album simply cause those songs work much better live....but thats just me....and yes, they are amazing live....find the npr all songs considered podcast if you don't believe me...

Wait.. what?
Strawberry Jam is your least favorite because..
the songs off of Strawberry Jam are better live?
weird.
They only played Derek, Unsolved Mysteries, and Fireworks when I saw them. Fireworks was all jacked up though.
I heard the NPR podcast and a couple other shows, but the new songs don't really do it for me. A couple are alright, but overall its kinda "meh".
I'm still really excited to see them though, and I'll have a good time.
And if I hear ANYTHING off of 'Water Curses' 'Strawberry Jam' or 'Feels' or 'Sung Tongs', I'll be happy.
I just think they should take a break from constantly playing new-NEW stuff and play a set that could show sceptics WHY they are so amazing. So much great material and 2% of it gets to the stage when people actually know it.
But I'm thinking this show will either be like I just described, OR .. it'll be even newer stuff than their last tour.

they've been playing fireworks live forever, like before feels...
yeah, i prefer the songs from strawberry jam live.....whats so weird about that??
im hoping they play something from person pitch to be honest.....that would be mind-blowing.....but i doubt it.....and the new tracks on the podcast do it for me.....brother sport? dancer? house? those songs are amazing....i think it's weird you don't think so.....to each his own i guess....

These guys went from "if I catch them, cool" to "not a chance I'm missing that shit!" in the course of the 6 minutes and 35 seconds that make up "For Reverend Green".

S. Jam all of sudden hit me one day. I decided to give it a real listen - like sit down with head phones and listen. needless to say, it has not left my cd player sense. It's one of those albums that is beyond words and i love the fact that people hate it cause i feel like i know something other people dont know.
But they do kinda suck live.....ohh well. be worth a quick check out.

The ironic part about this is that their first few albums were ALL ABOUT the slow stuff. i.e. #1 (from Strawberry Jam) is practically radio-friendly compared to anything off of Danse Manatee, Spirit They've Gone..., Campfire Songs or HCTI.
They didn't even come close to mainstream (or even rhythmic) pop songs until Sung Tongs. Anyone disagree?
(BTW, some of their early stuff is brilliant, while most is just challenging)

As I recall they opened with 'Banshee Beats' last year and it was amazing... even though they'll probably get a 'better' slot this year I'm hoping they play outside in the sunshine again, it was the perfect setting for them
