These are the 3 main modern Rock and Roll sub headliners. And as of today, we now have access to at least one song from each of the new bands album.

Death Cab - I will possess your hear - iTunes
Raconteurs - New Album - In stores
MMJ - 8 new songs show cased on NPR SXSW http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=88163634

MMJ's and Death Cabs albums sound like they're gonna be amazing and The Raconteurs new album is amazing. Makes me think GV knew what they were doing putting all 3 of those bands so high on the bill. It's kinda like they knew something before WE knew something.

**quick question** does anyone know if GV get access to albums before the release date? Like did Death Cab send GV their album in Feb and then GV heard it and was like "Damn your album is fuckin good!, you want a sub headlining spot at Coachella?" or do they just go on simply who will sell tickets? maybe both?

Death Cab and MMJ arent new bands, Im sure GV knew what it was doing by booking them.

You think GV would have Portishead as a headliner if they didn't know Third was at least at the level the first two albums were? I'm banking on them having dibs to lots of the upcoming releases and make their line up choices accordingly.

I would be surprised to hear that Goldenvoice doesn't have access to music ahead of time. It's not like it's any trouble for bands to give out copies of their albums before they're out.

yes, promoter & record labels (as well as radio stations) get advance copies of albums before they come out... how else do you think it gets leaked to the internet for all of us to download?

i'd really like to hear one fucking song from Scars on Broadway so i can figure out for sure if they're gonna be a maybe or a pass...

They must, i mean look at Scars on Broadway. They have yet release anything ever, yet they are on the lineup. I think GV must have heard something from them.

Of course they have, they have demos going around LA music/ent. companies for the past few months.

I justify my plans to see Scars based on the fact that Daron is the brains behind System of a Down and the reason they rule. Serj's album, which lacks Daron, kinda blows. Therefore, Scars is probably worth seeing unless they're on during Portishead. I'll see Serj if there's no one else on besides Flogging Molly.

EDIT: Changed my mind, I really like that FM song that's on the radio right now. The fake Irish band wins.

It's kind of a strange topic, isn't it? Here are 3 bands that use guitars, discuss.

Can't say for MMJ or Death Cab, but the Raconteurs literally just finished mixing their album last week. They sent out no advance copies to the press, or anyone to my understanding, and I'm sure that included Goldenvoice. With musicians like Jack White, Brendan Benson, and Jim James, you tend to expect excellence every time. And they tend to deliver. I don't think Goldenvoice considered it a gamble at all.

in the case of Raconteurs... i think GV wanted Jack White and was willing to take whatever or whoever he gave them...

Well, it was about time for The Raconteurs to play Coachella, the Stripes have done it. I'd rather see the Raconteurs anyway. I have Elephant and Broken Boy Soldiers, maybe not a great comparison, but BBS is a far better album.

false.

however, Consolers of the Lonely is better than Icky Thump.

I've never been a fan of death cab, but I've always kind of liked them anyway for referencing such an arcane source for their name. Kind of a toad the wet sprocket thing - hated them, but laughed the second I heard the name.

Anyway, at least four or five people have told me in the last few days that I have to check them out. So barring a conflict I'm game. Do they do any Bonzo covers? What should I expect from them live?

Yeah right. You might want to give Elephant another listen.

Will do. However, I'm not into simplistic garage rock that much, and White Stripes is definitely that, much more so than The Raconteurs. There's a song on Elephant that sounds exactly like Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, and that's just a turnoff for me. Then again, Nirvana did that kind of stuff a lot, and I love them still, so...

Broken Boy Soldiers didn't require "another listen" for me to enjoy it more, and I don't think this is one of those cases where the album will grow on me after a while. It's not Radiohead.

Not even close. Consolers really is underwhelming. Icky Thump is a top ten album from last year.

Elephant is the white stripes' masterpiece, Icky Thump is loads better than Consolers (but I do enjoy consolers)
