View Full Version : Music you want played at your memorial service.

Hope this isn't a repeat, I didn't put much effort into checking for it (thanks, Spiced Rum!)
Pretty self-explanatory, what music would you like played at your memorial service?
For me:
Queen - Another One Bites the Dust
CCR - Someday Never Comes
Frank Sinatra - My Way
Bob Marley - Three Little Birds
David Bowie - Let's Dance
For you?

Feel free to post all of your "specific details"
I've been reading a lot of existential bullshit and have become increasingly aware of my own mortality and I find this stuff fascinating.

I've always thought Three Little Birds would be perfect for the occasion..
I kinda like the idea of a constant loop of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata though...it seems heavy enough to make everyone suitably depressed

I'd like Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive. Because I want everybody to be desperately confused.
Failing that, I want the most depressing music ever written, because I want people to be so fucking devastated that they will never, ever get over it afterwards. They need to be properly emotionally crippled. So I've written my own song for the occasion. It's basically my name being slowly repeated by a weeping orphan, over some mindbogglingly tragic pipe organ music.

My dad once said that he wanted Jump In The Line by Harry Belafonte played at his funeral. He was rather drunk at the time, of course, but I still love it as an edict in a Will (he did not put it in his will and we played no music at his services, against my complaints).
I'd request Weird Al Yankovic's take on Candle In The Wind. I don't think he's recorded one. But that sounds good at the moment. Keep in mind my funeral will be a complete and total farce.
Genuinely reflective: Taj Mahal - Take A Giant Step
Just to fuck with the minds of all the young males in attendance: CCR - Someday Never Comes
Make bitches cry: Elliott Smith - Somebody That I Used To Know, Everything Means Nothing To Me, or A Distorted Reality (especially if I OD)
Cliche but perfect: The Band - I Shall Be Released
Trainspotting beat us all to the best one: Lou Reed - Perfect Day
Because it's in my movie: Bonnie Koloc - Jazzman
Because it's in the movie about my dad: The Spaniels - Goodnite, Sweetheart
Because words sometimes obstruct: Mason Williams - Classical Gas
Because I love Graceland: Paul Simon - The Boy In The Bubble
Because it's about going to hell: Radiohead - Pyramid Song
Because you wish you weren't: Ry Cooder - Jesus Is On The Mainline

I plan on having an ipod prepared. My death won't be traditional. First a simple cremation with my ashes being tossed in the garbage or some shit, maybe someone wants them. Then i would like a giant lifesize cardboard cut out of me, with a miller lite and a shot of patron. This will be at a bar and the music will be my ipod on shuffle. It will be a grand celebration.
Everything from Guns n Roses and Motley Crue to pre thriller Michael Jackson and Prince, to Arcade Fire and Gnarles Barkley. It will be drinking from probably 6PM - 2AM. 4 or 5 albums or songs won't cut it. There will be no church or priest or pastor or anything resembling any religion anywhere in the world at my funeral celebration.

Wow, this is a perfect opportunity to update a previous request in regards to my memorial service! And there's witnesses even! Fabulous! Unlike my planned memorial service, I'll try to keep this brief... Years ago, I told my mother that when my time comes, Stairway to Heaven must be played and my ashes should be rolled up and smoked by those attending the service. (I was quite the pothead at the time.) Unfortunately, mom passed before I did, and there's no way I could ever explain this plan to my father. Since then, I've experienced other things in my life that have reinfluenced my memorial plan and adjustments to it's outcome... I plan to be there! Yep...Why would anyone want to miss their own epitaph from those that love and will miss them? And why wouldn't you want to thank those few who do have nice shit to say? There will be special lighting, an open bar, and of course, a large stairway, left of centerstage. After all has been said, I'll propose a toast to all and thank them for being a part of my life as we lift our glasses, (Not shotglasses.) of Patron Teqilla. (Mine included!) Then I will give the cue to let all the little white doves that have been busily pecking one another in the back go, as I begin my ascent up the stairs as Stairway to Heaven plays to all. And, as I near the top of the stairs, (Which if timed correctly will coincide with everyone's last sip.) I will turn and give the cue for the DJ to start playing "One More Time," as I dance my way into Heaven...

I've always though "Hey Jude" by the Beatles would make the perfect memorial song. I always see my life move in pictures when Paul starts belting "Na, na, na, na, na, na, na." If not that one, I'd probably have to go with another Beatles song: "In My Life."

Master of Time
Setting sail
Over all our lands
And as we look
Forever closer
Shall we now bid
Farewell farewell...
High Vibration go on
To the sun, oh let my heart dreaming
Past a mortal as me
Where can I be
Wish the sun to stand still
Reaching out to touch our own being
Past all mortal as we
Here we can be
We can be here
Like the time I ran away
And turned around
And you were standing close to me
Awaken Yes ...........
If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
Id save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you
Jim Croche .............
I've been to Hollywood
I've been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean

I've been in my mind,

Keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

I always kind of wanted to be a douchebag and play some 40 minute Merzbow song so I wouldn't really be missed. Take that loved ones! But an alternate choice would be Spiritualized - Cop Shoot Cop, which still has that way-too-long noise-freakout quality with a little tenderness thrown in.

No, I did not.
How could you not be? I mention it fairly frequently. If you'd like to pretend you're going to read it and never get around to it for several months I'd be more than happy to send you a copy (that's what 90 percent of all people do, the other 10 just praise me relentlessly).
mother fuck.
i was going to pick elliott smith - everything means nothing to me, but randy picked it.
Funnily enough, that song is actually in said movie. Way back in high school it was scored to a scene that has since been cut that was a pretty literal depiction of the time I committed suicide but failed to die. Then Royal Tenenbaums had to use Elliott for a much less creative suicide sequence than mine, and I felt it was cliche and ended up cutting the whole thing anyway. But just recently decided fuck it, and put the song back in a new spot.

I saw him in Philly and was actually, I'm sad to say, incredibly bored and ended up moving out to the lobby because I couldn't take standing in the crowd while he played soft little songs with just his guitar, none of which were familiar to me. It's like he was playing all his not popular songs. It was nice to listen to from the lobby though.

The Asshole Song by Dennis Leary
I drive really slow in the ultra-fast lane,
While people behind me are going insane.
I'm an asshole
I'm an asshole
I use public toilets and I piss on the seat,
I walk around in the summertime saying "How about this heat?"
I'm an asshole
I'm an asshole
Sometimes I park in handicapped spaces,
While handicapped people make handicapped faces.
I'm an asshole
I'm an asshole
Maybe I shouldn't be singing this song
Ranting and raving and carrying on
Maybe they're right when they tell me I'm wrong...

hahaha, honestly these last hundred posts have taken forever. After they announced the lineup shit got a little weird around here so i stayed away for a little bit. Its good to be back now. I can pick and choose what to talk about w/out hell breaking loose.
I actually went to a memorial service today. It was for my Great Grandpa. Nothing really to get to hub bub about, he lived a long life. Just a lil bit strange, seeing how it was the first family funeral for me.
Its funny cause they did infact play a song they thought he'd like.
