Before they hit the stage the whole crowd was screaming "Primus sucks! Primus sucks!"

I guess they are an aquired taste... but Jesus do I ever love them.

As much as I'm ambivalent about their entire catalog, the man has a style all his own.

Noise and Anger? You aren't listening to the same band I am then. Primus have songs about fishing, Full Metal Jacket and beavers. I would hardly classify them as an angry band. And noise? To the untrained ear perhaps. Primus have incredibly complex ryhthms and all 3 guys are insanely talented musicians. Infact Primus are one of two bands who have a song in 8/11 time. The only other band to do that in the Greatful Dead.
Also, Les Claypool's vocals suposed to be rediculous and theatrical. They were originaly an instrumental group, but they wanted vocals. However they wanted to keep the group a 3 piece and they decided Les has the voice best suited for the group. The only reason is, his vocals were the only one wacky and zany enough to fit in with the music they were making.

Honestly I'd just go to see Les work the bass.

As much as I'm ambivalent about their entire catalog, the man has a style all his own.

Listen to Sailing The Chese and Frizzle Fry. Two completely genius and solid albums. Pork Soda is good too. However, after those albums, their catalog is a very hit and miss to me. Each of the later albums has its gems, but there are also alot of songs I couldn't care less for.

Trust me though man, if you EVER get the chance to see Primus, do it. They are absolutely amazing. My friend and I took our girlfriends to see them in 06, because we are both HUGE fans. Both of our girlfriends, mine especially now LOVE Primus. They are band some people just have to see live before they "get it."

Primus has been billed on various other festivals the past few years.

Anyone see "festaroo" directed by Les? Hilarious.

Les Claypool and all his projects will never play Coachella ever.

Perry Farrell has been at every Coachella
Les Claypool has been at every Bonnaroo
Neither one has been to the other and neither one ever will

Sorry douchenozzles but if you want Claypool or Primus go to the roo, it's not like it's a bad festival. Just skip Coachella next year and go to the roo that way I don't have to hear anymore of this stupidity.

WRONG
They had auditioned many singers and Les being the ego maniac that he is didn't want any of them so he did it himself. The guys an asshole why do you think none of his bands are together anymore. He somehow managed to get rid of half the Fancy Band who were basically his puppets, he's awesome and knows it and is a dick for it.

Primus sucks !!!!

I have seen Primus twice, in '95 (Tales from the Punchbowl tour) and 2004 (they played two sets and all of Frizzle Fry). I also saw Col. Les Claypool and the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade in '01, they played Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

I chose Beck over Primus at Vegoose in '05 and I am stoked that OSL won't make me have to choose this time since Beck is on Friday and Primus is on Saturday !!!!

Primus live is always a good time. Hell, I think I've seen them a dozen or so times over the course of 18 years. A night with Les, Herb and Larry on the polo fields would suit me. Though the energy of them in the Mojave tent would be better than main stage.

Primus playing 'Sailing The Seas Of Cheese' straight through was one of the best shows I've been to. I wish they would have released that tour on DVD instead of the Frizzle Fry one, but oh well. Still good stuff. Even if yr not a Primus fan, they are good enough showmen that you can enjoy their performance anyway. Unless you REALLY fucking hate them, I guess.

He somehow managed to get rid of half the Fancy Band who were basically his puppets, he's awesome and knows it and is a dick for it.

I was under the impression that they did infact audition singers, but none of them fit in with the band, so they all decided to keep it a 3 piece. Not just Les. I don't doubt Les is an ego maniac... but damn he has the right to do so.
Also, I havent talked to many people who have met Les Claypool. Some say he is a total dick, other say he is really nice and funny. He is an odd guy, that is for sure.

JSam67
07-13-2008, 11:24 PM
I don't believe I would. I've never liked one aspect of any song I've ever heard, or any live video I've ever seen. My old roommate loved Primus, and tried to tell me the same things while showing me "reasons" why I'd like them, and I hated him for wasting my time. The only way I'd be at a Primus show for longer than 10 seconds is if I was passed out, their music is just too awful.

I was 18 at the time (and yes fuuuuucked Sbess) and gullible but there's no way that song wasn't at least hinted at sometime during that set. At Lolla 05 did he not say, "I'm worried ... worried that Tim Burton is gonna fuck up the new willy wonka movie ... but I heard it's pretty good" or am I just completely insane? It has everything to do with Coachella being "The Premier American Festival" the one that sets boundaries and doesnt bow to convention and popular concensus. Therefore, my point being is that no matter what seems a best fit to you. Coachella makes its own rules and books the bands it thinks best at the time. Whether it be ones you or i like or dislike. I want Primus at Coachella. Hearing "Over the Electric Grapevine" there would be awesome. And no way Primus would play anything but the main stage.

I could see them closing the Outdoor Theatre.

Was that the opinion of a non-primus-fan festival antendee? Or a primus-fan-festival atendee.

Because if I didn't already love Primus I would think they sounded pretty fucking horrilbe live (as well as on record for that matter).

Lot's of screeching dissonant guitar sounds, treble-y bass, and nasal vocals. Not for everyone.

From everything I've seen and heard about their performance at OSL, they killed it.

Les Claypool is going on tour really soon, I would definitely be down if he squeezed in a Primus show at Coachella this year. Not quite sure how realistic that's going to be, though.

Primus have been milking everything for what it's worth since 2003 with no new material. Instead of playing the same greatest hits-setlist every time they get on stage maybe they should make a new album? Or maybe they're content being a nostalgia band. Though it is a bit sad that they didn't follow up the Seas of Cheese/Frizzle Fry tours with a Pork Soda one. The 3-hour long, double-set Primus shows were definitely great.

I saw Primus at the Rimac (UCSD) with Gogel Bordello Back in 2006 and it was easily one of my favorite concerts to date.

I have seen Claypool many times but last summer, when Primus played Rothbury, was the best show i have ever seen. His rendition of The Toys Go Winding Down was ten minutes and included a raunchy reggae jam in the middle. I started the first crowd-wide chorus of PRIMUS SUCKS!!! i had a few stupid hippies yell at me and defend Primus. They had the audacity to tell me if i thought Primus sucked to leave the concert. Ha Ha.

Maybe if the headlined the Outdoor theatre. 50 minutes on the mainstage would not do them justice. Give them an 90+ minutes headlining the outdoor. Against The Killers. It would be perfect.

Primus as a late-add is not looking good. Les Claypool just announced a new album from his solo project, the fancy band...

http://lesclaypool.com/img/splash-fungi-cover.jpg
The Fancy Band is touring in March and if Les is in fact added to Coachella late it won't be Primus. I saw Primus for the 4th time at Outside Lands and they will forever be one of the greatest live bands of all time.

Ugh. Primus probably isn't going to happen then. Probably Les Claypool solo. Or maybe even Oysterhead.

EDIT: I meant at Bonnaroo. Not Coachella. (Unfortunately,) We all know Les Claypool will never make an appearance at Coachella.
