The Stand is his best book.

Christine has the best one-liners to steal.

Shawshank was the best adapted-from-a-Stephen King-story movie.

Hello Dark Tower series! I love that shit. The first book is not so good, but most of them after that, especially, book 2 and the last 3 books are AWESOME. I do like The Stand and It quite a bit too.

The Stand, no question about it.

The Stand is great. I do love me a nice apocalypse. Alas, I made the terrible error of getting the spangly new Author's Cut, which is waaaaaaaaaay too indulgent. I mean, the original was pretty indulgent, but clipped along at a solid enough pace to get away with it. The recut... no, I don't recommend it.

I remember trying to read the book "Christine" and got so scared I had to hide the book from myself so I didn't try to finish it, it is one of the few books I never actually finished after starting. And to this day I can't watch "The Shining" as soon as that little kid starts saying REDRUM I am done. And Pet Cemetary gave me nightmares for weeks. "Sometimes, Dead is bettah". UGH

amyzzz

Pet Sematary is fucking terrifying. And deeply grim. Freaky.

It's pretty hard to pick one book as the best. But, "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" should get honorable mention. It can appeal to people who do not really like horror stories, and it's hard to read it without knowing if the girl lives or not. I think some of his best works are the psychological thriller type, with creepy stuff lurking, but not detailed gory stuff.

This reminds me, I have "Duma Key" sitting waiting to be read. :D

I like his novellas. His books are too damn long.

The Body, Shawshank Redemption, but my favorite was probably his Green Mile series.

I don't want to give it away, but yeah, it kinda fell apart at the end. It was better than Cell though, and the beginning and middle parts were worth the read.

Well, on that recommendation, I'll go and root it out so.

After all, wouldn't want to judge a book by it's cover...

There's "Barack O'Bama" t shirts cropping up in Dublin lately too.

That's a nice change. I was there in the summer of 2004 just before Bush's visit, and the city was plastered with protest signs.

MissingPerson

Yes, we have... issues with Mr. Bush. He's using our airports for troops and possibly renditions, and we're somewhat less than cool with it. It compromises our neutrality, which puts our peacekeeping troops in Lebanon and Chad in serious, serious danger and prevents them from, you know, keeping peace...

The Mist (movie version) was satisfying but the "creatures" were so hokey, they actually made me laugh. I imagined them to be much more horrific and faster. It did have that Stephen King feel though.

Cell and Duma Key were ok...but it feels like he's writing these recent novels for a movie version and has cut back on the truly terrifying style I'm used to.

MissingPerson
06-20-2008, 04:58 PM
Hmm. I still haven't seen The Mist. There was a massive delay on it getting to Europe, for some reason. Heard some dodgy reviews though, I think I might just stick with the monsters I've imagined, and playing Silent Hill.

devachan
06-20-2008, 05:11 PM
Good call. It's worth seeing if you're a big SK fan though.

The only movie adaptations I have been 100% satisfied with have been The Shining and Misery.

Oh and I just thought of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. And The Long Walk. I'll never get the image out of my head of those kids walking on bloody stumps.

amyzzz
06-20-2008, 05:15 PM
I enjoyed The Mist movie quite a bit. The freaky monsters seemed really trippy to me--weird iridescent colors, and the way they moved was just wrong somehow. It may have helped that I was coming down on some excellent acid that I had the night before. [I have a very strong feeling that King has done copious amounts of psychedelics in his past. He mentions mescaline in several different books/stories.] I'd heard a lot of negative reviews of the movie too, and watching it without having high expectations also helped my enjoyment of it.

You should go and make sure. Acid your ass up big style, then go and watch Shawshank Redemption. If, partway through, you find yourself thinking "Whoa, Tim Robbins is weird and iridescent. And the way he moves is just wrong somehow." then I think we've found the key to guaranteed enjoyment of Stephen King films.

When I saw it, I wasn't expecting much either. I had heard weeks and weeks worth of bad reviews. What may have saved the film for me is the interaction between the groups of people stuck in the store. I think some liberties may have been taken with the adaptation...but it worked.

Stand By Me and Shawshank were well done. But no one can beat Jack Nicholson or Kathy Bates. They truly captured the characters I imagined.

Oh man, I just remembered that I actually sat through "IT" and "The Stand" adaptations for tv. I want those hours back.

The adaptation was completely wrong. Read the book and you'd know that. SK was pissed beyond all belief about it. Besides, Jack Nicholson is the only reason that movie is any good, imho.

Don't tell me to fuck myself Randy. I could kill you with my thumb, you know.

I forgot about what a great performance Kathy Bates had in Misery.

and you, amy, are 100% correct. I saw an interview with him where he says, "I'm not gonna lie, in the late sixties when I was in my early twenties, I was a head. When I say that, I don't mean like I was a-head of other people, I mean I was a HEAD!!!" With a crazed look in his eyes, it was really funny. Then he said, "I mean really, I was tripping all-the-time!"
