View Full Version : Gogol Bordello: better in '08 or '07?

I thought it was quite unique seeing them on the main stage this year...but last year was so much better. Everyone was into it, the pit was crazier (though it was bigger this year), everyone packed in etc. it was the perfect mood for a GB show.
So what do you think was better?

Only was at the 2007 one
from what I've seen of 08 - really great, but no where near the greatness of 07

This is obvious, '07 hands down. They should have played at night in a tent this year too...

There is no competition. 07 in the Mojave tent. They were great on the mainstage this year for sure though. I actually wasn't sure how they would translate to the mainstage... and they impressed me. However, Gogol in the Mojave remais the best show I have ever seen in my entire life. The energy and atmosphere in that tent that night was unlike anything I had ever experienced.

The Mojave performance of 07 was definitely better overall than their 08 Mainstage set.
I was impressed by the extended medley they played at the end of the 08 set. Musically speaking, it was one of their finest moments.
It has been interesting watching GB go from small clubs/bars to the mainstage at one of the top music fests in the world. Cheers for gypsies!

07 for sure.
In fact, I thought they were better at Vegoose than they were at Coach 08, and that was at 12:45 in the afternoon on the smallest stage. They had a 75 minute set at Vegoose, so that helped. I think they take a while to build.

I didnt see em in 07 but i was in the pit the whole time for 08 and i had a blast. Friday was my "Chill out, see the bands" day..... Saturday was my "Get waisted day"...... Sunday was "Go in the pits till you feel like passing out" day for me.... Gogol had the crowd good.

I saw both, and both were awesome. But the energy and adrenaline of Gogol and the crowd was unbeatable in '07. Plus the time and location were much better.

I have fully accepted no matter how many Gogol shows I go to... I will never see any as good as them in the Mojave in 07. It doesn't mean I wont see them whenever I get the chance though.

i thin what made 07 better was the lack of a mosh pit. it was much more fun having the crowd move together and enjoy the show without asses hitting faces and fat guys using the mosh to move forward. as a fat guy, i know, that with my size, i shouldn't move ahead of the crowd when it is elbow to elbow. especially when elbows are being thrown.

i don't mosh to move forward i do it to do it. i'm tall so i can see well.
but everyone in '07 was pushed together therefore not much of a pit could happen it was just a good time during their set.

Ummm, moshing is slam dancing. When moshing, you dance around in a circle, shoving and slamming into each other, thus slam-dancing. The two are essentially one and the same. At least that's how it is at punk shows, I'm not sure about bro-rock.

greghead
08-19-2008, 08:33 AM
Get out more? Ok, dude, I'll be sure to do that. But in the mean time, let's discuss this.
From '95 to '03 I was heavily into the underground punk scene, which is where I formed elements of that opinion. Additionally, in my studies (I am currently pursuing a master's in history, with an emphasis on the history of rock and roll as cultural movement) I have found this definition to be fairly accurate. There are several works you can refer to: "Flowers in the Dustbin" by James Miller, "Rock 'n Roll: An Unruly History" by Robert Palmer, "Subculture: the Meaning of Style" by Dick Hebdige, and the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock.
Originally, to mosh was to dance and groove and get down. The term "moshing", with its Jamaican origins ("mosh [mash] it up, mon"), linked with slam-dancing, which came out of 80s hardcore, and is premised on physicality and intense crowd reaction and participation. What we call "moshing" is actually more akin to 80's slam-dancing. Running around, shoving each other, bumping into one another, jumping, dancing, yelling, singing, etc. is more akin to slam-dancing, but we call it moshing.
And Rage (Josh, I think your name is), I didn't mean for that to sound so snarky. My apologies, hermano.

I can agree with that, though there is no denying that modern moshing evolved out of slam-dancing, first through punk/hardcore, then metal, then pretty much everything that has angry guitars and drums. Moshing originally had nothing to do with pushing or shoving, it was pretty much akin to skanking. Funny how things change, I guess.

No offence taken. And yes, Josh is my name. What I meant was what I take as slam dancing. Y'know, those people who, like, punch the ground and look like a gorilla while doing it? They then proceed to punch someone randomly in face, try to fight them, and then go back to punching the ground. That is what I take as slam dancing.
I take moshing as either a big group of people running into each other somewhat violently, but without punching and purposely trying to cause physical harm to an individual or a big group of people jumping up and down, almost in unison. There was no, what I interperet as, slam dancing at any Gogol shows I have been. But there have been plenty of mosh pits, as well as dance pits.

We gotta meet up next year mamba and get a good pit going.

You should have been in the pit. someone would have tripped you and Memorial_07 and myself would have skipped and tapped danced on your back.
I seriously doubt that dude. I may listen to Bjork, but I'm a pretty big motherfucker. Keep in mind that I managed to get myself onto the front rail for lots and lots of acts at coachella.... RATM, Prince, Aphex Twin...

I'm big too and I wouldn't try to fuck with people at RATM.
A bunch of aggro fuckfaces.
And I had my spot for Prince and I was perfectly happy where I was

I personally think that especially at coachella, people who just shove their way to the front are unconscionable assholes. it's such a good vibe, and generally at coachella people are good about recognizing and respecting who's been staking out their spots.
case in point: me and my girlfriend had been standing waiting for gogol bordello to come on, and right as it starts, some fat, sweaty, six foot two pile of human waste shoves past everybody and stops right in front of jill. she's like five foot four, and this was a crowded area populated by (mostly) six foot tall guys, and he stop right in front of her, of all people, and presses his shameful, disgusting back fat in to her, and she punches him in the back of the head repeatedly, and the dribbling sack of shit wouldn't move.
we moved closer to center, and ended up with an awesome spot again the side rail, but if I ever see that guy anywhere ever again I'm going to make him eat his own back fat until he throws up, chokes on it, and dies.

I'm not one of those assholes. I'm just sayin, I'm not a little guy that will be easily trampled upon either. When I started my quest to get to the front for Aphex Twin, Diplo was on the stage in the Sahara. When I started my quest for the rail for Prince, Cafe Tacuba was playing.
I'm absolutely not one of the assholes you're talking about, and I totally agree with what you're saying. My point was just that mamba will never, ever tapdance on my back.
Probably the biggest asshole thing that I do at Coachella, and I'm sure I will do it again, is push photographers who stand on the bench part of the rail and put their fucking ass right in my face so that they can take a picture. Especially when the artist they're photographing is like.. fucking Aphex Twin, who I'm 100% sure does not want to have his picture taken. That having been said, if they're polite about it and make it quick, it's no problem. I will even offer you a hand for balance if the crowd is crazy.. but if you're a dick and just stand up there snapping away, I will push you down.

I mostly skank too. I just usually do what the majority of the crowd is doing. Im not gonna start pushing and going all out unless the situation calls for it. If the vibe is calm, then ill be calm. If the vibe is violent, then you gotta get violent. It all depends. If its calm and people are dancing, i wont go around and start pushing people. That would ruin the vibe.
Dude im down to meet up. When the lineup is announced, we'll pick a band we can mosh to and we'll meet up before they begin and we can start a pit. lol

What does listening to Bjork have anything to do with you physical size?? Are Bjork fans short or something??

I was front row :thu (ill never get tired of saying that. lol)

Dude that sucks. I totally get you on the vibe. There were some bands where the crowd was cool and noboby was trying to get to the front and there was like a foot of space between people. Then you got the douchey people (as mentioned above) that just dont consider other people.

Actually, I would say yes. If you compared the average height of Bjork fans to the average height of, say, Rage Against the Machine fans, I feel confidant that the average height of the RATM fans would be a good 4-6" taller.
Lots of chicks dig Bjork, and they probably bring the average down quite a bit. My point was just that Bjork isn't really as masculine as some of Coachella's other acts, and since you guys don't really know me, you may have thought I was some scrawny Icelandic kid or something. I dunno.

About vibes:
a crowd can still pit but can be having an amazing time (Flogging Molly or Gogol Bordello for example) however RATM's vibe was of course going to be fucking insane. It was inevitable. There are some bands whom can bring a bad vibe and some who can bring a great vibe.
And mosh pits at coachella are fine. It's good to mix everything up and that's what Coachella is about

So??
Why would somebody assume somebody's physical stature based on music??

07 was better, but thanks to the guy with the giant hat and 1.75 of Vodka the 08 mosh pit was pretty fun. How do you get a 1.75 of Vodka into Coachella? Giant cowboy hat.

Shut up. If you don't like big men standing in front of you at concerts, don't go to concerts. Pushing and shoving is part of every concert. If you don't like it, then go to the back, or go watch Jack Johnson.
I can't stand little men like you who get all angry when those of us who want to get close get close. Deal with it. If you don't like the heat, get out of the kitchen, cockfag.
edit: You're from Toronto. No surprise.
