Daft Punk were unreal as headliners at Lollapalooza, best set of the weekend...they would do the same at Coachella 09...

07-14-2008, 02:36 PM
the reason I voted nay is because I would want them in the sahara. However, that would pose the over-crowdedness problem. Bottom line, nothing will ever be greater than their 2006 performance. nothing. ever.

Bottom line, nothing will ever be greater than their 2006 performance. nothing. ever.I agree with this. Whenever any coachella artist tries to repeat a brilliant performance, it just doesn't work (see AIR, gogol bordello, etc), although I thought Bjork in 07 was amazing and I've heard her first performance was amazing as well.

I don't see daft doing a major tour until their new album has time to settle and get a little known.
1 to 2 years after it is released.
Though, I could be wrong, and they will promote it traditionally as its released.

no. because i just dont like daft punk. to me, daft punk is to electronic music what britney was to pop a few years ago. yeah, they may be pretty awesome in their own right, but when you look at the big picture, they're just hard to see. meaning, they suck in comparison.
but thats just my opinion.

I am all fro Daft being a headliner AS LONG AS the set up is different. I cna understand people voting no if they didn't want to see the same up again...but I am hoping that is why we have no votes.

I kinda think you're right. As far as Coach 09 goes, I'm thinking no. They just played, then toured and headlined other festivals. It doesn't seem that it would be as big of a deal if they did headline this next year.

All I'm saying is maybe it's a little bit silly to dismiss offhand without watching or seeing a performance that was raved about by pretty much everyone who did see it as being one of the most remarkable concerts any of them ever experienced. Maybe.
Plenty of us didn't like Daft beforehand, Marooko. I sure as fuck didn't. But you really can't draw that much of a comparison between the music on their albums and the music played at that tour. Just sayin'. MAYBE the 99.9 percent approval rating exists for a reason. MAYBE.

Once again, you should maybe just take my word (and the hundreds of thousands of other words) that you're underestimating the degree to which it was a total reinvention of their music.
Or you could just continue to insist on being woefully ignorant and staunchly opinionated about it. 'Cause that's mature.

2006 was awesome and it can't be topped. especially on the mainstage. electronic music is much better in the tent than on a stage. it was a once in a lifetime moment and if you weren't there, you missed out. i don't like the idea of repeat headliners in general, but this was such a great performance and such a unique opportunity, i don't think it will be possible to recreate the energy of that crowd again. i knew people who traveled from new york JUST for this performance thinking it would be their only north american show. it just can't be done again.

ok I want to post my 2 cents. Now let it be known that I have not seen DP live, but I have seen the coachella full video plenty - and listen to the bootleg once in a while.
There is a clear difference between Daft Punk and Daft Punk Live. Their studio music isn't terrible, but there is nothing revolutionary about it. It's all just too repetitive (especially Human After All). It's just too cheesy. There's way better music out there, alot of it by artists who aren't as well known as DP.
But DP isn't known for their sub-par albums nowadays - they're known for their live show, which not only is visually stunning, but mixed very creatively. I would have loved to have seen them on the Alive tour, but the fuckers only came to NYC for a show, and I couldnt afford the trip.
Now I'd like to draw a comparison here... The Chemical Brothers VS Daft Punk. I have seen the Chems once, and as i've said, i've seen countless videos of DP. I think that visually and musically, the Chems are on a higher level than DP. Now don't get me wrong, that pyrmaid is a fucking genuine idea, but I just don't think it compares to the visuals that Ed and Tom bring to a show. It's always something different, and its just so freaking cool. Plus, the music (both studio and mixed live) is just leagues better than DP. That last statement is almost a fact.
If by some work of demonic nature the chems and daft ever conflicted on schedule, I would choose Daft cuz i've never seen them. But I could see myself easily leaving early for The Chems.
But it just really astonishes me how many people vote Daft as the greatest EDM act ever (for reference, just see the thread for it). Prodigy, Underworld, Orbital, Aphex Twin, The Chems, Moby, Fatboy Slim have all made more original music than DP ever did. That handful of shows that Daft has done in the past couple of years is not enough to qualify them as the best ever.
Now when/if DP does coachella again, will they headline? Maybe. But what I think is even more likely is that they will co-headline with someone (someone like Beck). And DP will play last, because they are a "closing" act that really nothing should come after - it just wouldnt make sense.
sorry for the rant, but thats all my opinion.
BlackSwan

the worst thing is that when it comes down to it Daft Punk haven't done much to legitimize electronic music in the mainstream, they've just made it seem like a cheap trend that relies on a flashly live show to make up for creative short comings.

electronic dance music... to an extent. you're omitting the fact that most EDM is also played/mixed by DJs so the music can't only rely on the live show that goes with it when performed by the artist.

Non-repeat headliners are few and far between, and among repeat acts, well, sorry everybody but anyone that saw that show ought to be able to agree the next incarnation of whatever they want to do in the arena of concerts ought to debuting on the main at Coach.

i tried. i just didnt get the daft fever. it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be, but it definitely isnt staying on my media player. and im not listening to it again.
there wasnt much to the mixing, seemed like it was cut many times. and that works well, but just not for every mix. not saying thats what happened, but thats what it sounded like. it was waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy too electro for me. i like electro, just not that much. also, being a househead, there was just no soul at all. i mean, i love me some techno, there isnt much to soul in tech, but theres just a feeling there. i didnt get anything from this recording.
i still stand by my complete dislike of daft punk. please GV, keep them away from Coachella next year. especially the main stage.
basically i felt like it was electro for the masses. i wont even watch the video, i cant imagine what it adds to the music that would change my mind.

i tried. i just didnt get the daft fever. it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be, but it definitely isnt staying on my media player. and im not listening to it again.
there wasnt much to the mixing, seemed like it was cut many times. and that works well, but just not for every mix. not saying thats what happened, but thats what it sounded like. it was waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy too electro for me. i like electro, just not that much. also, being a househead, there was just no soul at all. i mean, i love me some techno, there isnt much to soul in tech, but theres just a feeling there. i didnt get anything from this recording.
i still stand by my complete dislike of daft punk. please GV, keep them away from Coachella next year. especially the main stage.
basically i felt like it was electro for the masses. i wont even watch the video, i cant imagine what it adds to the music that would change my mind.

agreed here for the most part.
for people who think "how can you not like daft punk?!" like a majority of people on this board, i'd love to know how much electronic music you all listen to, other than the really big names like chemical brothers/prodigy/underworld (who's music is about 50X more creative than daft).
the only thing daft punk gets points for is their live show which is quite dazzling. but if it wasnt for the pyramid, it'd only be subpar.

I really don't wanna get sucked back into this whirlwind, but for the record: as much as my admiration of them is probably more than 50 percent attributable to not just the pyramid/light show itself necessarily, but rather the unbelievable cohesion of the visual and aural aspects...
Even without it, that set is still fucking awesome. Even without the lights, I think it must fall quite a bit into a category of "you have to actually see them" because the sound quality and the way the builds and transitions were structured was just incredibly well-planned and orchestrated.
Of course, that's cause it was entirely pre-recorded. But from a perfectionist's perspective I understand why they did it and I think it pays off. Especially for an electro/house set, it's a fucking remarkable string of songs that's truly affecting.

i dont hate daft punk. i may say i do, but thats just to bug people. what i hate is the idea that they're the be all end all of electronic music. they dont even come close. yeah, i cant stand their music, but for "one more time" to be such a hit, they gotta be doing something right. and in my opinion its making electronic music for the mases. doesnt make it amazingly good from an artistic standpoint, just production.
its like lil' waynes new album, album/rapper of the year or whatever. you think people are gonna be blasting that shit next year? no fucking way. because really, it isnt good. its just produced well for the masses.

NIN
The Flaming Lips doing a UFO show (or not - still be just as cool).
The Cure
Radiohead
Massive Attack (though they aren't big enough, i'd rather have them than DP)
My Bloody Valentine
i'd take any of them over DP. Honestly, i'd rather have the chemical brothers or underworld headline the mainstage instead of daft (even though we all know that'll never happen).
i personally dont think daft punk would headline - they would no doubt be 2nd billed, and they would probably close out the mainstage (like tiesto 07, but getting a longer set time me thinks)
I really enjoy Aphex's 08 bootleg performance and Underworld's "everything everything" more than the DP coachella set.

NIN - if the first major NIN show in at least 5 years couldn't sell out Coachella in 2005, would the first major NIN show in weeks/months sell out Coachella in 2009?
The Flaming Lips - not a headliner for a festival this big
The Cure - live show isn't as interesting as Daft Punk's but they do have a new album coming out. could happen.
Radiohead - an exclusive American performance would be epic but unlikely
Massive Attack - incredible in 2006 but if not a headliner then, not a headliner now
My Bloody Valentine - not a headliner but unset on main or closing the outdoor theater against a controversial headliner of the Jack Johnson variety would be perfect
Daft Punk would definitely headline the next time they perform. The oversized tent in 2006 wasn't nearly big enough to contain the crowd and there has been an extraordinary amount of positive buzz and hype from everyone sane since that first show. I think 2010 is more likely, though.

The only chella I missed was 1999. Too young and I didn't even know it existed. Depeche Mode made an amazing entrance for sure. One of the best I ever saw. But we really should've skipped Madonna. We got a close enough spot but it just wasn't worth it. And we missed the 1st few songs of Massive Attack. Plus, the shitty spot for Massive and Tool.

HELL YES! With the production their set would command, no one would have time to set up afterwards, they'd have to close the Coachella Stage.

Yeah thars true.
From what I've heard DP fans are total pricks.
But same goes for RATM and I love them.
The only problem with Daft, is people will be wanting to dance like mad. I don't know how they expect to in a crowded space like that

If Daft Punk were to play the Sahara it would be sardine city!
Putting DP on after a big rock act would work really well. All the rocker folk who weren't into Daft would clear out, thus making space to DANCE SO FAST!

You love RATM or DP, or both? And this is the very first I've heard that we are supposed to be pricks. DP fans that is, absolutely hell no not a RATM fan here.
The 3 times I saw Daft Punk the crowds were all friendly, considerate, and consummate dancers.

Any crowd is going to have pricks but the type may vary with the kind of music. The crowd usually reflects the band pretty well.

But we all know the RATM fans are just pricks.
But in relation to DP's crowd: for some acts @ Coachella, there has been known to have its handful of assholes in the crowd and I think DP would attract its fair share. Though i've never seen Daft Punk so I don't know.

All that's been really said overall is either people who only know daft punk for album sets, and people who have seen daft punk live or have had a taste of it. Many of you who believe DP is meh and never really gave them a chance, never did experience the live show, download the DVD and watch it, examine the light show, the beats of the music and the general vibe of the crowd. It should also be noted that they pretty much just took their library of samples from their three major releases and mashed them up, properly producing and mixing on the spot.
Each performance (of 3) I saw was slightly different, they brought back more rolling and scratching to the vegoose set, and pumped some parts way harder in comparison to the Alive cd released.
It should also be noted to anyone reading this - What was seen in 06 and toured for the rest of 07, it is highly unlikely to come back and they would want to top this show. As much as haters want to hate on DP, the show they presented is its own version of The Wall (Pink Floyd performed it only 3 times in the USA); and those lucky enough to have seen it should be happy, those who didn't, keep thinking daft punk isn't that hot, that way I can walk straight to the front of the pit when they play next time!

for the record they had a set track list every time and what they played only changed 3 times. (maybe 4, if they cahnged it in australia but i was never able to find a boot of any of those shows)
they had the original one for the first batch of touring. then they changed it at the start of the first batch of added european dates. and then they extended it starting at vegoose. every show has the same actual run time (except for all shows after vegoose. which are the same running time as eachother but obviously longer than those on the first and 2nd batch of touring)
and they already said that they retired the pyramid. so yes. we know next time will be different.
