love to be shpongled. i've always been a fan of that Vapor Rumours track.
whenever they play los angeles though, the tickets seem unusually expensive.
Are the live shows really that extraordinary?

I never listened Shpongle because of the name Shpongle
why?
I am so so jealous that LA gets semi-regular appearances by simon posford.
FUCK I love shpongle. I've been listening to 'sixth revelation'- their track from the crystal skulls disc over and over.
orbit
07-19-2008, 01:07 PM
so it's just posford performing?
frozen pilgrim
07-19-2008, 01:16 PM
when it's just a 'shpongle dj' set, then yes.
this is why I'm so hell-bent on shpongle for 09:
there have only been two "live" shpongle performances in history, both in japan. one was at the foot of mount fuji and it ended as the sun came up.
I would fucking kill for goldenvoice to get the north american live shpongle debut.
like...
please?

frozen pilgrim

it's in england. I don't think I'm going to make it D:
I was planning to go, but I have to get out to africa to visit my dad's parents sometime soon before its' too late. who knows- maybe I'll win the fucking lottery and still be able to go to shpongle.
I want coachella to get the live north american shpongle debut.
they're testing their live show in london, they've got a new album coming out...
if the live shows they just kind of threw together before are any indication, coachella and shpongle together could create something unimaginably immersive and psychedelic.

and luca, I have a question - on my copy of AYS?, on the last track, around the 17-18 minute mark, it plays a very distorted static for about a minute, maybe less. Is this supposed to be normal, or do I have a bad copy?
frozen pilgrim
07-19-2008, 01:29 PM
must be a bad copy. want me to filedropper you a clean version of the track? (I think we're both talking about ...and the day turned to night)

yeah that'd be awesome.
this is the only CD i have by them, and i've had it for almost a year now, but only started listening to it a couple of months ago, and briefly back then. but i've been giving it more of a listen to now, and am really digging it. i'm really into tracks 3, 4, and 5.
and that live video looks sick. i'd definitely be down for some shpongle at coachella next year.
Lurker_in_a_tree
07-19-2008, 01:53 PM
all right, well that video has me convinced.
but for coachella? where they'd get a 45 minute timeslot at best?
sandwiched between ed banger djs?
I think they'd be better suited headlining their own L.A. gig, or somewhere in the desert, where the whole design of the event could be more appropriate to them.

I am going to write a personal letter to paul tollett begging him to book shpongle for next year. they're absolutely my favorite EDM artist. I think they belong in the proverbial hall of fame.
I also think they are the sonic manifestation of the feeling I get from being on the polo fields. this inexplicable, lucid, beautiful, malleable, textured, warm, comfortable state of being. coachella makes me shpongled, so bring shpongle to coachella!

this is some dude's review of their first album. a little bloated and prosaic at times, but obviously heartfelt.
By Russell Brooks "iq-9" (North Wales, PA)
As a discriminating electronicasseur for over fifteen years, I was, prior to discovering Shpongle, under the impression that I had completely saturated my technolust with brilliance from the likes of Ozric Tentacles, Eat Static, Juno Reactor, FSOL, Crystal Method, Delerium, Faithless, Dirty Vegas, Balligomingo, Underworld, Orbital, Richard James, and the list goes on. Simon Posford, cosmological originator of the Shpongle universe, has dual-handedly provided me with unequivocal evidence that there is a vast macrocosm teeming with life beyond today's musical event horizon. Being new to his genius, I currently only own the two Shpongle masterstrokes, and absolutely can not wait to own every work he has ever put to digitized media. The musical omnipotence demonstrated on these CDs has rekindled my interest in the whole genre of uber-creative, beat-driven, goa, world, trancetronic, psyonic, progressive, ambient, intelligent, quasi-synthetic blend of otherworldly cerebral massage, if there is such a thing - true listener's music.
The lush production value alone is worth the trip. It is clear that Simon takes great care in the consummately transcendent sonic engineering on his projects. An audiophile friend, and fellow 500+ CD-owner, who enlightened me to Shpongle, put it best, "This is the best production I've ever heard." Simon's endeavors in inventive panning, gating, digital delay, pitch-shifting, harmonization, and sonic layering are nothing less than phenomenal. I can not get enough. I notice new and subtle nuances every time I listen.
It is beyond refreshing to hear someone scatter the electronic song formula to the wind, and dream up his own from the deepest marrow of his being. All but nonexistent is the conventional throb of the quarter-note kick drum, as Simon explores the more moving and compelling polyrhythms of 6/8, 7/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/8 and more, but makes it so immediately intimate and palatable, that the odd meter is undetectable. The man has raised the bar to heights as yet unreachable by any other artist. Raja Ram's ethereal flutations swirl Simon's troposhperic textures into a perfect natural balance like a vaporous, ancient Valdivian rain forest. The sounds that emanate from these CD's are breathtaking. From the deepest of the sub-bass, to the lucid mid-layers, to the bristling highs, the entire audio spectrum is populated with living, breathing, ever-changing forms, oozing, sliding, and flowing amongst each other in a dance of eternity.
I don't remember being this inspired by a musical work since that first epiphany as teenager fifteen years ago, when I first felt the musical spinal shivers during a serious headphone listen of the highest-production music of the time - that preeminent moment when you realized, "Music moves me."
Simon, may you live a long and fruitful life, so you may continue to bring the world this astounding, beautiful, and fulfilling music. Don't ever stop.
Fan for life,
-russ

Not to detract from the thread, this may be a stupid point- if you are so in love with Shpongle, why are you giving their music away for free? I know it's already out there for people to take, but it seems like you're kind of encouraging people who might actually want to buy their music not to...

But those people may have never been turned on to it in the first place. If they choose to download, then they can make the decision about whether the music is worth paying for or not later on. If not, well, they were never going to buy it anyway so nothing is lost.

totally a valid question. my logic for sharing their music freely is as follows: twisted records' artists are not generally the finances-first types. nobody on twisted has ever done a huge fireworks-and-chick-in-cages nightclub tour, and when they DO tour, most of the venues and events are fairly underground, and sometimes even free (although they're almost never in canada). that, and there have been twisted records free web releases ("e-missions"), so as a label and a collective of artists, they obviously value the free exchange of music as a part of its evolution.
that, and I genuinely believe that the only way to understand what they are is to hear them, and that if you hear them, you'll love them, and if you love them, you'll buy a ticket to their show should they come. and in fact, that philosophy is why I believe everyone should just release their albums 'in rainbows' style.
