The music imfo and generally good threads get a 10+...Some of you though take away from that vibe I expected to feel again. Coachella is for everybody. Not some cult run by assholes. Sorry, but I had to vent my feelings~

In that particular situation i have a friend that works at Vans and with the tour (what really looooong living OC resident doesn't have a friend that is or has worked with Vans?) When i heard the old skool punk rock stage line up (Adolescents, the Dickies, FEAR....), i asked politely and my friend happily obliged.

i still consider myself a low scale photographer in progress.

This year was fun. my Coachella pictures (thanks again Awesomness) are part of the official pictures here, a few made it into the Urb with MIA on the cover, and Ice Cream Man put up some. i have been posting on buzznet for a few years now and sometimes they help me get access (like Vegoose).

It turns out that it wasn't a blister, but in fact, a severly infected open wound. He took off his pants and showed everyone. So then a doctor comes down to inspect it, and they take him to the hospital right away and he ends up having multiple surgeries on his ass to dig the infection out and repair the wound with skin grafts.

Over 500 kids were in my History of Rock & Roll class...imagine taking a final while sitting on the floor. I had to drop that class right before finals, despite having an A, because of the bullshit "pre-major course requirements must be met before you have 135 credits or you can't be that major and by that point it's too late to switch to another major because of the 215 credit limit for undergrads...NO EXCEPTIONS" policy. But UCLA is awesome in everything except their bullshit policies, sadistic staff, and overcrowded classes.

Yeah, I agree. I think the school, your professors and your environment have a ton to do with how much you learn. The idea that you are just as likely to learn a lot at OCC as you will at Yale is pretty silly to me. And the name and reputation of your school does matter, at least a little bit, to potential employers and graduate school admissions officers.

This is my longtime best friend Sprak and myself out of the light over to the side. This picture is several years old, possibly even from the pre-heroin era based on Sprak's pupils. I heard from Sprak for the first time in five months a couple days ago--he'd finally gotten out of prison back in Jersey after serving nine months, I believe the second bid he's done. I like this picture because the face he wears in it does an excellent job of displaying what a charmingly violent psychopath he is. And since I'm happy to hear from the boy again, I've decided to post a letter that I wrote to Vice some time ago when they were having an issue where they asked for readers to send in stories.

Reading the Stories Issue I couldn’t help but think of my old best friend, a complete lunatic who went by the unlikely name of Sprak (short for his last name Spracklen), and who I recently learned has just been arrested for possession of heroin, works, and committing 25 thousand dollars of check fraud against the pool company he was working for. He is definitely going to finally see a serious bid out of this, seeing as he’s only three months into two years of probation for—what else?—heroin and check fraud. Sprak was always the most entertaining person I’ve known, largely by virtue of the stupefying recklessness bordering on a complete lack of self-preservational instincts that has made him such an impossibly shitty criminal. This being the second time he’s been arrested for stealing and forging checks, Sprak had still not broken the habit of just writing the checks out to his full legal name. As his best friend for the majority of our formative years I am still at a loss to give a proper answer as to whether he’s just a fucking idiot (which is hard to deny although he’s strangely genius at times) or just totally willfully self-destructive.

A good example (although not the story of import) is the time we left Jersey to go camping in Canada and decided that we should camp as far into the wilderness nearby the edge of the cliff, a kayakable river beneath us. That people chose to kayak in there was all we knew of it going in, but as soon as we found our camp spot Sprak dumped all his gear and turned towards the cliff, still too far away to be able to see what was beneath, which didn’t stop him in the least from running off it. He just pivoted and fuckiing BOOKED full speed in the direction of oblivion, diving a good forty feet headfirst into water he hadn’t even bothered to peek at. It happened to fast for anyone to really react until he was already in the water, and by the time we got to the edge to look the water had already carried him an impressive distance in the direction we just came. His head was clearly underwater but we knew he was alive because both arms were thrusting triumphant middle fingers straight into the air, which is why his fucking head was underwater. The only explanation he offered when he came out from the wilderness an hour later, dripping and wearing his biggest smile ever, was that he wanted to just completely throw up his life to God’s ill will, figuring that if he died it wouldn’t bother him and if he didn’t he’d know even God couldn’t fuck with him. That was a pretty good one, but I think by far the best Sprak story didn’t actually involve him, but rather his aunt Zona (I shit you not) and grandfather Melvin.

These are his father’s family, which means they’re all this fucking crazy. Mr. Spracklen was always an incredibly fearsome person, having developed a bearlike shape and mentality growing up in Alaska. He would in due course pass this onto Sprak just as he had inherited it from Granddaddy Mel—there are almost no stories of them being in fights in which other people started it unless it was several people they were fighting, and even then they had a tendency to make the four or five potential combatants willing to swallow their pride and walk away. This story took place sometime in the sixties, Sprak’s Dad was only five or six, his sister Zona only 10, and the whole family living in a cabin a while outside of Anchorage. It was near enough to summer for the kids to still be playing outside but still colder than all shit as soon as the Sun went down, and Zona happened to be out and about when a couple of 12-year-old neighbor boys happened by her tripping face on acid. 12-year-olds on acid sounded extreme to me, but as the story was related to Sprak there just simply wasn’t shit to do in Alaska so the kids got started young. To cut right to the chase, one of the kids feeds the unwitting young Zona a hit of acid without her realizing at all that there was some kind of drug involved. Once she was dosed the other kids fucked off and Zona walked back to the cabin, where she promptly went fucking insane.

Neither Mama Spracklen nor Sprak’s Dad nor Zona herself had any idea that she’d taken the ‘cid, so after trying unsuccessfully to make any sense of her crazed, tripping 10-year-old daughter Mama Spracklen had no choice but to get her to a hospital. She wrapped a babbling Zona up warm for the hour drive into Anchorage, leaving a tiny Mr. Spracklen behind to inform the enormous Granddaddy Mel of what had happened. Mel worked for a lumber operation doing the kind of shit five-feet-wide Alaskan monster men did, which is to say seriously fucking physical labor, and the last thing he expected or wanted to hear at the end of his day was that his first child, still a little girl, had gone psychotic. He immediately threw his son into the truck he’d only stepped out of a minute ago and tore ass towards Anchorage.

But an important span of time had passed between Zona eating the acid around noon and Mel’s arrival at the hospital well after dark. His wife sobbed in a chair while the doctor nervously explained to this barrel-sized man that his daughter had inexplicably become insane, and that she was being kept in four-point restraints for her own safety. Naturally, Mel insisted that he see his girl against his wife’s urging that it was just too disturbing, and the doctor took him up to the Psych Ward where a just recently sobered Zona was totally coherently scared shitless at her predictament. When his daughter produced no signs of being even remotely insane Mel promptly busted the doctor right in the nose. The doctor, being a slight man, was sat right on his ass by the tremendous blow Granddaddy Mel had thumped him with, so much so that Mel had to go looking for a nurse to threaten with similar treatment if his daughter wasn’t released right that second. A loving and relieved Spracklen family drove back to their cabin, Mel no doubt feeling great comfort that his raw manliness had served his family well, and knowing the Spracklens he was undoubtedly extra happy that protecting his daughter happened to involve breaking some smart cunt’s face.

Spracklen men are fascinating in this respect—their most central characteristic is this fundamental belief that the pure force of their being, whether expressed through words or much more likely actual force, will decide the outcome of anything they are presented with. It is highly comical because they remain these men of willpower despite almost always having life stuff their determination back down their fucking throats in one unbelievably unfortunate circumstance after another, perhaps no better example being that night back at the cabin. The reunited family hurried through the pitch night into an icy cold cabin, proud father Mel continuing his performance by hurriedly jamming the fireplace with logs and in almost no time at all they were all sitting around a roaring, crackling blaze. Had he not been so enthusiastic about going from no fire to huge fire right off the bat it might not have been so crackling, but he was and it was and remarkably it crackled a red hot cinder several feet through the air to land directly on Mel’s eyeball. As we all know Mel was no pussy but a burning cinder in the eye is not the easiest thing to be cavalier about, and his wife absolutely refused to let him tough it out when it could mean his eyesight… so back they went into the truck, leaving Zona to watch her brother, and Mama Spracklen drove Mel all the way back to the hospital where they found out that the only doctor working that night was doing so with a freshly broken nose.

I couldn’t help but think of this reading the other stories and have wasted no time in writing it all out and sending it in hoping that it’s not too late to throw up on the site should you happen to like it as much as I do. It’s probably going to be a couple of years before I get to properly hear from Sprak as he’s going to be locked up back in Jersey and I now live near LA, a location that’s been even more depressing than usual tonight because there simply are no Spracklen-type creatures out here. There aren’t many anywhere at all, in fact, Sprak’s four-person family being one of only two tribes to have migrated down from Alaska, and I can’t help but worry that a few years of prison may present just too many opportunities to apply his will against the world for Sprak to come out alive. So if you happen to know any characters like Sprak—unbound, wild motherfuckers concerned only with ensuring that they and those around them always have plenty of great stories—do what you can to hold on to them even though they can be a serious pain in the ass. But I don’t recommend letting them move in with you. The cocksucker cost me 300 dollars in forged checks before I caught on.
