you don't try to hit your opponent, but there are times when you actually do. and the only rule in capoeira is don't start something you can't finish. if you hit someone on purpose, expect him/her to try to get you back.

This is a style of capoeira called miudinho. It starts off as a choreographed sequence and then leads into an improvised game. It requires alot of flexibility and stamina. This shit is unbelievable.

a couple of kicks, but mainly alot of dodges/escapes and techniques that involve catching yourself controllably whenever you lose your balance. That's one thing capoeira teaches you fast: whenever you fall, you're still in complete control of your body.

I actually know of one capoeira mestre in the LA area who gets paid about 1,000 an hour to give private lessons to fighters in the MMA or other professional leagues. That'd be the life, right there.

Capoeira is indeed a game as well as a dance and martial art. But it's not supposed to be thought as a game in the sense of winners and losers. What you try to do is to force your opponent/partner to go certain ways and then do a move that could hit him. Its all about deception. It's hard to explain without using alot of examples. You can tell who plays a good game of capoeira, who plays a smart game, a rough game, and what not. I remember one mestre told me it was a game to played, not to be won. That's a good way to look at it.

most of the capoeira you see that involves flips and acrobatics and break-dance like moves are done just for show. Capoeira was originally developed as a martial art 500 years ago in Brazil as a method of fighting slave owners and oppression. It is indeed a martial art, and I know mestres that have competed in martial arts tournaments around the world.

and as for the no-contact part: it's kind of hard to explain. You do try to hit your opponenet, but he/she knows to get out of the way. it becomes fluid, smooth, and it trains you indirectly of how to handle yourself in a fight. Trust me, some capoeira matches turn into fights that send people to the doctors. In some instances, you do try to hit your opponent, but for show capoeira, you dont want to get anyone hurt, which is kind of unfortunate because it leaves people with an impression of the art that its not very practical. You don't do the fancy, pretty shit in an actual fight. Capoeira also involves practical kicks, dodges, and grappling techniques that are more fight-oriented than dance oriented.

So I'm guessing she's more of a tribal fusion dancer than a traditional dancer (based on her music selection)? I prefer the fusion...more freedom. Anyways, pros: Dude, she's a bellydancer! :P Cons: Being a performer requires a varying degree of narcissism, so there's that. Bellydance is an all-consuming obsession, so plan on attending plenty of performances! I know some incredibly kind dancers, and I know some uber-bitches. It's luck of the draw, really. Good luck! :)
