View Full Version : If An Artist You Liked Made A Rock Opera...

...Which artist(s) would you want to do so and what songs would you see them/he/she choose from pre-existing material?
I was thinking that it'd be possible to have a Smiths rock opera, but it'd be sort of convoluted and would need a lot of dialog between each song to work right.
Since we're all about Radiohead, due to the tour, I also thought that a rock opera/play set to Kid A would be interesting.
Thoughts? Plots? Ideas? Concepts? Go!

I strongly believe that "Guero" is a concept album and would make a terrific movie/"rock opera"

Would that be it though, Salah?
I was thinking some more about a Radiohead-influenced play/movie/opera. I think it would be a cool idea to have one of those "big picture/little picture" type things where you have some sort of nefarious/confusing/problematic all-encompassing worldly challenges (i.e. "Karma Police", "The Tourist", "Optimistic", "Idioteque", "There There", "Fake Plastic Trees"), a basic love story ("All I Need", "Nude", "Lucky", "High and Dry", "A Punch Up At A Wedding", "Where I End and You Begin", "True Love Waits", "Exit Music for a Film"), hatred and adultery and divorce ("Knives Out", "House of Cards", "How to Disappear Completely", "Morning Bell", "Just", "Let Down") and I think you could even run a band-within-a-rock-opera idea with stuff like "Anyone Can Play Guitar" and "My Iron Lung".

I'm in favor of more rock operas in general. They're almost always either excessively good or excessively bad. I'd say Sparks are long past-due for a rock opera.

There I fixed it for you.

I'm not necessarily endorsing it, but for some reason I could see Islands creating something in the way of a rock opera
I could totally see Of Montreal pulling it off as well

Most movies could benefit from the inclusion of GAY SEX during the slow spots.

I'm definitely for music multimedia based musical experiences. Whether it needs to take the form of an "opera" or not is beside the point. We are in a time where it's easy to synchronize the live performance of audio, visual, and live action elements to a degree that is ridiculously underused in this arena. I've seen it done in extraordinary ways with experimental music and performance. It's time for it to come to the mainstream, and I think Radiohead would be an excellent launching point for this (extended beyond the typical visual concert elements that are currently found in their shows).
Whether or not this all needs some kind of narrative... Eh, I don't know. I think a musical setlist crafts it's own kind of narrative if done well enough.

If it involves shit and celebrities, Matt Stone & Trey Parker have probably already done it.

I want Werner Herzog to do a rock opera based on his movie Grizzly Man.
The music would be provided by The Shins.
Of course Werner and his experimental music group would do the score.
James Franco would be the Grizzly Man and Asia Argento would be his girlfriend.
And Grizzly Bear could make an appearance to do a song after the death scene when we are reflecting on the life of the Grizzly Man.

I know most of you will not like it, but American Idiot was written as one of sorts. It would be very interesting to see it performed live like one.
Other than that i would like a MGMT, Oracular Spectacular Rock Opera.

the Flaming Lips are developing a Yoshimi musical for broadway. they have been for a year or two now. so if Christmas on Mars has taught us anything, the musical will premeire in 5-10 years.
edit:
the potential musical as described by wayne,
"There's the real world and then there's this fantastical world. This girl, the Yoshimi character, is dying of something. And these two guys are battling to come visit her in the hospital. And as one of the boyfriends envisions trying to save the girl, he enters this other dimension where Yoshimi is this Japanese warrior and the pink robots are an incarnation of her disease. It's almost like the disease has to win in order for her soul to survive. Or something like that."

This would have been a great idea if you had said Slayer. Everything exactly the same, except not the Shins, dude. Fucking Slayer. Blasting all the time, while that dude gets ripped apart by the fucking bear... and he's all trying to pet it like, "Oh, but we're friends bear," and the bear is just having none of it, and just ripping him apart to Dead Skin Mask.

the whole concept of a rock opera just seems odd. I kinda like monkey. but I don't know if I'd call it a 'rock' opera.
