How do you think V stacked up in the series? I'm a bit undecided. I have seen it twice and for me the more i see each film the more sense they make in their inter-connectedness (dont think thats a real word)
Watched saw 4 a few wks ago again just to refresh my memory and that did help. I don't think someone new to the series would like it much.

I didn't watch Saw IV, and I dont plan on watching V. The first Saw was brilliant. I still love it. Saw II was pretty good, and it was interesting... but nowhere near as much as the first one. Saw III was very meh. The ending frusterated me soooo badly. It actually made me pretty mad. I dont think I will watch IV, V or whatever comes after. It is a shame, because I love Saw.

Everyone (especially rage and fax) needs to check out a great horror movie from last year called Murder Party. It's much more interesting and better than all of the Saw movies and I actually liked the first one. I agree with rage's assessment of the first three. Check out Murder Party, you'll be very glad you did.

My fiancee would agree. And that Murder Party looks pretty cheesey, but its good eh? If I eve see it at the video store, I will check it out. Better than the first Saw? I'll have to see it to believe it. Seriously, the first I saw Saw, the twist at the end was fucking brilliant. Brilliant. I never saw it coming. When Jigsaw stood up and left the room, then the movie ended, I just stared at the screen with my mouth hanging open in disbelief. It was perfect.

this movie was a big surprise in 06. It was 06 right? I had just moved to SD, and I didn't have anything to do, so me and a friend went to see Miami Vice(that shit sucks) and right after the movie ended we snuck into The Descent not knowing much outside the trailers, and I really liked that movie. I need to watch that again, thanks for the reminder.

Well, I guess I didn't like the first Saw nearly as much as you did. I wouldn't call it brillant, but I liked it the best out of the series by a longshot. Keep in mind Saw had a huge budget, Murder Party had a very low budget so what they were each capable of doing was quite different. Considering the meager budget, I enjoyed MP quite a bit. The acting wasn't bad and the dialogue was witty, clever and funny. It had me laughing, in the way that they intended it to.

That's what I didn't like about it. I don't want to know the background of Mike Myers. It's better when he's more mysterous like in the original. It wasn't a bad movie at all, but the whole concept of remakes is stupid, and in comparison to the awesomeness of his first two films, it just didn't stand up.
I agree with C Dub. Torture porn is garbage and it's not scary at all. Regular porn has better acting usually. I don't think Zombie's movies are scary, but they're a whole lot of fun. I like his dialogue. Also, any movie with Danny Trejo in it, is automatically badass.

Sounds like a "Suspiria" tribute/ripoff. "Suspiria" has a pit of razor wire. I still maintain that the first 10-15 minutes of "Suspiria" are the scariest movie ever, but then it falls off dramatically. (I haven't seen any "Saw"s past the first one, which I thought was OK.)
"House Of 1000 Corpses" was awful, but the last 10 minutes really freaked me out. It had that hallucinatory quality. "Devils Rejects" was a great movie, but not scary. I don't think it was even trying to be. It was straight up action movie.
I'll give some more love to Snyder's "Dawn Of The Dead". As far as remakes go, it's top-notch. I think James Gunn's script has a lot to do with it, and I LOVE James' "Slither". Not "scary", but freaky and fun.
EDIT- Oh, and I had the end of "Sleepaway Camp" spoiled by a documentary. Is it really scary in the context of the movie? On it's own, it's just kind of giggle inducing.

Just the music in Suspiria is scarier than most movies. The first attack is is insane. How many movies have a shot of a plunging knife FROM THE INSIDE!?! And I still don't like to stand by a window at night.
After that, it kind of settles into a study in interesting lighting and set design, but there still some stuff in there that scares on a primal level, notably being killed by the thing you trust the most. The end is beyond lame though.
It sounds like the remake is back on, which seems like the worst idea ever. But Natalie Portman is playing Suzy, so we'll see.

in regards to saw v:
i LOVE the first saw, liked the second, hated 3 & 4, but i had to see 5.
i thought it was alright, my main problem with it was that it really had no intriguing plot. 1/3 of it was exploration of the previous films, 1/3 of it was set up for saw 6, and the final 1/3 was cool gory shit. there was no real direction or twist or psychological mind-fuckery.
the pendulum was tight though. and i really enjoyed the last scene.
