I am addicted to coffee. I think I drink about three to five cups a day---probably the majority at home in a mug or in my travel cup, and the rest from a coffee place. It's like crack, but more sugary :)

All love for the caffinated beverage of the god goes here.

And I don't CARE if you hate Starbucks; it's around the corner from me, and it just happens to be where I buy a majority of my coffee from. I need my grande non-fat vanilla latte or else I cannot function. (Semi-related, venti iced passion tea lemonade is AMAZING.)

I seriously could not function without coffee. :(

Coffee is liek LEMME BASH YOUR HEAD IN WITH CAFFEINE while tea is much more tasty.

And clearly Kitt Kat is seriously enjoying a cup o' joe right now.

Oh and people say coffee stunts growth? Not true. I have been drinking it since 6th grade and look at me.

I drink one mug of tea a day (currently white chai w/milk). I used to drink triple-strength coffee (enough grounds for a pot used for one cup), but it got to a point that that much caffeine was jacking with my health. I have issues with anxiety and insomnia...'Nuff said. I don't like weak coffee, so...tea. I do still love the smell of coffee, and I miss cafe americano.

I used to love love love the coffee at Cafe Tropical in Silver Lake. Their cafe con leches fueled many late night sessions. But even in the USC area, there is no excuse for Starbucks. The Ragazzi Room on Hoover is a good alternative with cute exposed brick walls. Also Normandie Bakery is a short drive away on Jefferson, and has fabulous baguettes and pleasant outdoor seating in addition to coffee. And then there was that Coffee Factory place on Figueroa, but they sort of suck at pulling espresso.

I'll assume your talking about the one on Hoover by Spudnuts. That particular location opens real early.

I kind of feel like I have to chime in... I am recently departed from two years of hell at fuckbucks. I am now at seattle's best (yes I know sbux owns them, but we really do have good coffee!) First, I can't help myself... brewed coffee has wayyyyy more caffeine than shots of espresso. And if you are paying a lot for your coffee it generally means that someone in another country is getting paid livable wages. That's right, your $0.99 cup of coffee was really made out of a little Colombian girls tears.
Oh, if sbux asks you to work xmas, just say no. There is no pay worth that shit!

Ahh, a fellow "partner". Do you feel like your soul is raped on a daily basis?

I happen to be a fellow "partner" myself here at store 526 in San Diego, have been for about a year and a half. It's not something I'm proud of, but if I could find another, more superior job around here, I would leave in a heartbeat. That and I really like all of the people I work with, and despite her blind allegiance in the company she works for, I have a really nice boss... and that's always something to hold on to. But the company I work for = shit, and I don't know what ever brought me to work for them. Young ignorance I guess, I was only 16 when I applied...

But with that all said, I love working at a coffee shop, it's just the place for me, I really love the atmosphere. As for coffee itself though, it all tastes the same to me, I couldn't care less. My favorite Starbucks order... the simple grande drip with room!

sbessiso

AHHHH PANCAKES!!! YOU WORK AT SFUX TOO?? :pulse!!

I know what you mean, what keeps me sane is my fellow co-workers. I work with a lot of my friends and those who weren't before are my friends now. We goof around A LOT and try to keep things light.

I've been working at another store these past few weeks, one that isn't on Lincoln Road, not in South Beach. Just far away from Tourist Central and you know what? I really like it! I had never known the feeling of going to work at sfux and NOT hating my life. It's a small store as opposed to my giant ass store. The customers are really nice (not bitchy SoBe losers) and the place has its peak hours but then its gets sloooooow. Which I love. I can never get enough downtime. I DO hate it when bosses have this "blind allegiance" as you put it, they want us to be a fucking robot like them and I refuse to.

p.s.-My favorite drink to make is the doppio espresso :P

Hahahaha. No that's not bad! Any iced drinks are made in a jiffy, and americanos particularly are so simple. The worst, for me, is steaming milk to specific temperatures. I just want to yell at them "YOU CAN TELL THE FUCKING DIFFERNCE?!?"

Ahhh yes I have been loving my doppio's lately. I used to hate it, tasted disgusting to me, but I've acquired the taste. Doppio + steamed breve + 2 pumps of any syrup = awesome.

And yeah that's actually pretty funny you work in a touristy area, I do as well! I'm not sure if it's quite as much as Miami, but I'm surrounded by like 6 super-posh-expensive hotels, and needless to say more than half of our customers are both really rich and really foreign. I can never understand some of the people who come in but can't speak English, "latte" and "coffee" sound exactly the same. But on the bright side the tips at our store are like the best in San Diego, in the summer we can get like 2-3 bucks an hour.

Are just a simple happy barrista like myself? How long you been with the Buck?

sbessiso
12-11-2008, 09:34 AM
Our tips are terrible!! We have sooo many co-workers at our store so after they're divided up, we're left with some skimpy ass tips. I won't get into numbers, just rest assured that they're just terrible.

Don't get me started on the tourists, their lack of english is understandable I GUESS, but it gets just so frustrating. They get mad AT ME for not understanding them/knowing french (or spanish or german...).

Well, assuming you work full-time, you're still probably much more experienced than me. cold bar used to be my favorite! And in Phoenix during July, you really only make cold bar drinks for like half the day. But my store was also one of the busiest in the state (and a drive thru, ugh) so we did about 1500-2000 transactions a day. Usually with four frapps on each order. Joy

How do you do that? trippy.

If you are an actual barista and not a button presser like starbs, you get the right ratio of foam to milk and the foam blends with the liquid and if you pour it right you can make designs. Some of those are with mocha syrup and you draw patterns like a spiral and draw in other lines with a thermometer. I'm waiting for an old hippie to order a mocha and trip out at the design, I get weird reactions any ways for those that have never seen latte art...

independently owned and operated, all organic and fair trade. I just buy a half pound of fresh ground every couple days. right now I'm on my second mug (about fourth cup) of "Around the World". one of their better selling blends. it's a blend of three central american beans, really nice deep chocolate notes, and a long, floral, almost winey finish. always drink it black with raw demerrara sugar. every morning, I make eight cups of coffee (not ALL for me), and watch last night's daily show/colbert report.

wow, they even have 4 locations in JAPAN! ...and are trying to open up drive-through locations

There use to be another coffee chain in Hawaii with the name kick ass or something like that. Their logo was of a donkey kicking it's back legs out. I remember seeing them on the big island. Do Hawaiians really drink coffee? I mean, like in comparison to so cal.

I don't know about native Hawaiians, because I don't know a whole lot of folks with a significant percentage of Hawaiian blood, but in general Hawaii residents and kamaaina aren't really big coffee drinkers. Which explains why we have nearly only crap coffee shops with bitter espresso.

But I would also say, at the risk of getting flamed, that warm weather places in general don't really know how to make a good espresso.

I drink decaf triple shot nonfat lattes. I'm totally that girl. Maybe that should have gone in the confessions thread.

There a place in Glendora that makes a cup of silky thick coffee, some would say mud. It's so good that I keep forgetting to bring a large mug as opposed drinking out of a paper cup. It's that good that you notice the taste of the paper and want to enjoy the total essence of the coffee.

Fatbastard, I am so with you that the experience of the drink can be disrupted by the wrong cup. I have started using my Not A Paper Cup recently. Most of the plastic and metal mugs out there annoy me with their ugly design and cheap feel, so I'm pretty much in love with the idea of being able to carry around porcelain instead.

I do like the feel of stainless steel and enamel ones, however, so I'm always on the lookout for a well-designed alternative.

What a fantastic cup, where did you find it?

Yes, it rules. I got mine from the MoMA Design Store, but I have since noticed that they sell them everywhere from ThinkGeek to Target.

Those look good, might have to try some, and that cup looks sick...

Metal cups for me. I can see myself breaking that cup within a month.

That part initially bugged me about the place I mentioned. They only have paper cups, regardless if it's to go or I'm sitting there. I give Starbucks credit for giving me a glass or plastic cup when drinking in the store.

Doesn't the porcelain cup get too hot? We have those porcelain cups that look like the paper NYC coffee cups. They are great around the house, but I couldn't imagine carrying them around with me.

The cup is double-chambered with a insulating layer of air between your hand and the hot liquid, so I've never had a problem. Although I have seen reusable silicon cup cozies being sold, so I suppose you could add one of those if you had a problem.

We have these for home use, but they do get hot. I love them regardless. I prefer drinking coffee with a top though, so yours looks pretty awesome. I've seen them in MoMA, but figured they just got hot like ours.

Hmmmm, I may have a x-mas present for myself. :thu

I love those cups you have, too. I've seen them and have been tempted to purchase. Have you seen the white porcelain cups that look sort of like crumpled plastic cups? They are super cute too.

Ah, cup lust.

lol, the crumpled cup has been a major source of debate at our house.

Cool, but are they practical?

Mmmmm...Peet's Coffee. There's one in my apartment complex...when I can afford it, I drink it everyday, otherwise it's back to instant coffee. :( These are hard times...
