"Push this on us"? You do realize that Dubstep is probably one of the most interesting and forward-thinking genres around right now, right? And it's only getting more popular worldwide. The fact that you see Dubstep producers touted around here so often these days is testament to that.
Also, crazzz, why shouldn't it be in the Sahara? Do you not think it's suitable "dance" music or something? Is it not Ed Banger-y enough for you?

Isn't Drop the Lime considered Dubstep?
Some of it. Most of his recent production is more Bassline & Fidget (ever since he stopped making Breakcore everything he's done has been pretty much based on whatever's popular in the UK at the time), but he did have some singles out in 06/07 that were straight up Dubstep. I haven't seen one of his sets in a while, though, so I can't comment on how he is live.
Happy to hear that The Bug is confirmed. Given all the hype this year I'm not really surprised that he's Coachella's first Dubstep pick.

exactly. it's fucking everywhere, and it's the same shit. only a few producers are trying to innovate and make interesting dubstep. 90% of them are stuck with the same thing since 2004.
no wonder early dubstep producers wanted to keep this on vinyl only.

Same as every other genre. It's inevitable, and as long as there's still that 10% I'm happy.

yeah, why not bring the interesting 10% then? and like robotron said, alot of dnb, house, and related forms of EDM have the same issue with 90% being boring and unoriginal, but its the 10% that keeps us in love with said genre. so i don't see why there is so much hate for dubstep for a reason that can be said about almost any other genre
orbit
12-25-2008, 07:58 PM
nobody here hates dubstep, but don't create another thread about it.
the genre has been overhyped. that's why there are tons of dubstep djs out there now playing crap. and well, 'scenesters' buy that crap. but yeah, there are some good artists out there too and i hope they remain once this hype wears off. 2 hrs dubstep sets won't work in the sahara though. i'd like to see it in the dome, but that's me. it's good to see it's been merging with other (sub)genres though.

what do you mean by good? hyperdub-type-of-label djs? there are some local parties around here, and some of them have been pretty decent. from the known ones i've seen bassnectar playing some dubstep, hatcha, caspa and i think that's about it.
mittens4kittens
12-25-2008, 08:20 PM
By good I mean good. Bassnectar is good... saw Hatcha in Denver a while back, super killer... I'd imagine Caspa lays it down as well.
It would be cool if some of these promoters would take an interest in some of the more interesting, diverse cats making tunes right now, like Starkey or Martyn

I've seen Kode9, The Bug, Starkey, Mathhead, 6blocc, and a few others that have slipped my mind at the moment (those are probably the biggest names I've seen anyway). Also seen some Dubstep-inspired sets by DJs outside the scene. Flying Lotus, Ghislain Poirier, etc.
Anyway, I don't think it's really correct to level all those complaints at Dubstep specifically, orbit. Yes, they're all problems that the scene faces, but once again, what genre hasn't been massively overhyped and overplayed at one point? Or have a shit ton of terrible producers compared to good ones? Or tons of scenesters buying into it?
Also, two hours with the right DJ could be good. I'd never expect a packed tent, but I think a Dubstep set in the middle of the day before all the big names go on sounds like fun.

dubstep is currently leading a new movement in electronic music that will soon takeover clubs all over the world, and hopefully this will be a good thing. but as with any new genre, it obviously will have alot of negative impacts as well. but as of now, it has already influenced a new subgenre of experimental hip hop/electronica with the likes of flying lotus, hudson mohawke, zomby, rustie, joker, etc., and is filled with artists pushing the boundaries of experimental dub/breakbeat music with distance, martyn, skream, burial, headhunter, vaccine, kode9, mala, and many others leading the way (lol that sounds like 'hot wheels, leading the way!) but you get my point. i totally agree, there is so much bullshit dubstep that is based on the formulaic kick---snare--kick-kick---snare and the lame sounding "wobbly" bass but people don't seem to look past that and seek out some core creative artists... alot of good dubstep doesn't even have "wobbly" bass and is fusing elements of jazz, soul, dub, lounge, hip hop, glitch, rock, and even folk; and any sort of combination of these and more - i'm not trying to push anything on anybody, i'm just trying to invite others into some good music that i really love and feel a good vibe when i listen to it. i feel that alot of people on this board try to criticize others for not liking a certain a style of music. but i think that is completely opposing to the point of this board: to introduce others to some good ass music. all i'm saying is just give it a chance - listen to some of the said artists and then make up your own mind, and if you don't like it by then, then that's fine: to each his own. but give it an honest chance. i like it because i find that some of the good artists in dubstep will fit perfectly in a mix with the likes of leftfield, faithless, thievery co, air, sizzla, and even dj shadow. it has the quick percussion of dnb but the half time step kick/snare of mellow hip hop, and much of it nowadays is experimenting with new techniques and really cool samples. it is good shit i think!

I like wobbly bass. :/
It's the easiest part of Dubstep for shit producers to emulate, but all of the wobblier tracks aren't terrible. Don't hate.
Also, I kind of agree with you that for a massive festival where it's so easy for most people to find new artists, a lot of people here are really slow to enjoy new artists. Just look at the Sahara 09 prediction thread. They'll probably come around once Coachella 09 rolls around, The Bug kills it in the Sahara and becomes everyone's favorite "find" of 09, and Dubstep becomes the new Electro House (on this board).

I tend to agree with the sentiment that big festivals like chella are great for big-name, well known artists, but also for completely new shit that some folks might not get exposed to otherwise. There's definitely room for a dubstep act or two at chella, regardless of which stage they're on. Sahara is just where this kind of stuff usually goes and (most would argue) where it belongs.
