thats unfortunately not the same thing.

long story short, i found my british clone...some chick named little boots who plays mega synthtastic/keyboard heavy jamz. and she has one. and i fell in love with it. and i need it.

Her lyrics are terrible, but I think her instrumentation is fabulous. If I had any clout, I'd want to make a synthjam duo with her.

But lets go back to talking about that rad beat machine/sampler/light show. I seriously think I'm going to buy it once I do the final payment on my credit card (which makes my balance $0.00!) I need more drum machines, because they're what I need to actually make legit recordings. My boyfriend's drumkit was recently stolen, so I need something to supplement what would have been him doing live drums a la Yelle.

shit aint the same dude.

Tenori-On is a self-contained instrument. It's got the synthesizer in it. It does output MIDI, but it isn't necessary to make it work.

The monome is an open-source box of buttons basically. It needs to be hooked up via USB to a computer to work along with some sort of software. So basically the monome does whatever someone programs it to do....which by the way is tons of different stuff. There's a pretty long list of different apps that the monome community has made.

kitt kat...i thought you were talking about someone else...Hazel Mills...but she's not really girltastic synth based "jamz". Guy in her band uses a Monome

The Tenori-on is a waste of money. The Monome has better value... But I still say spend the time you'd waste paying off the credit card bill learning how to use a microcontroller and build that shit on your own. Especially if you are really interested in this stuff...

Yeah, I know there are cheaper routes to synths. But the whole world of downloading patches online and using a MIDI controller and having some program that I don't know what it would be play the sounds and this and that and the other is absolutely mindboggling to me, let alone building something.

I'm just a keyboardist, not a tech wizard. It's why I have a bunch of analog synths instead of using the MIDI controller BS. More $$$, but....Eh.

i built a monome...the kit was $265, clear acrylic custom cut case was $70, like $10 for all the LEDs...you just...might want to know how to solder

you could even hookup the monome through the computer to one of your analog synths...to make things more complex :)

how long did it take you to put it together? is it something that a person with little to no soldering experience can do?

i knowwww. hahaha. i have a recording nerd for a boyfriend, but i need a tech wizard to set me up.

well...i made the mistake of just going at it right away. You're better off buying some cheap kit to solder to get some practice in and when you're done with that and somewhat confident, then do the monome kit.

Once you know what you're doing with the soldering, it should take maybe an hour for the logic board and then 1-2 hours for the keypad board. The keypad takes longer cuz you've got 64 LEDs and 64 of these tiny diodes. So that's 256 contact points right there. It's totally worth it in the end. Check out the monome site and their forum, lots of good stuff there.

Find a local media artist to volunteer some time for, they always need someone to solder. It's a good way to learn, and you'll probably learn more than you bargained for in the process...

that would've been much cooler than putting together a shitty LED scrolling sign

haha. I learned how to solder working for a media artist in seattle soldering connections to microcontrollers... I think I soldered something like 400 connections in one sitting. ugh...
