I actually hope it is a very mediocre, or even bad, line up this year. There is no possible way I can go. So it would make me feel better. Sorry Jared, thats just the selfish side of me.
By the way, did you go in 08? I don't think you did... but there were a lot of bands you liked playing, so maybe you did go...

We need to get used to KOL showing up near the top of lineups of our festivals, they're only getting bigger. And really, there are far worse bands out there, guys.

i drove from LA up there for the show last year. the venue is quite simply the most lovely i have been to. the campgrounds also are a way bigger party than that of coachella. also the headliners get as long as they want and the band before gets around an hour and a half. plus the tickets to the fest if you get them early are pretty cheap. it would have cost me more just to see rem and the cure at the hollywood bowl (for the good tickets) than camping and tickets to the three days cost me. also free vitamin water and beef jerky each day when you walked in.

How long was the drive from LA?

it took about 20 hours. its hard to estimate because i drove with a friend and we stopped a few times. also no speeding through Oregon, those cops are all over waiting for you. and seriously you have to drive through these like small ass towns with barns with no roofs and the speed limit will be 15 and there will be a cop at the sign that will pull out and follow you through the entire town. heck one cop went around us and sped up only to be seen waiting on the side of the road by one of these barns a few miles ahead trying to catch me speeding.

Speed Limit in Oregon on Interstates is 65. Assuming you were coming from SoCal...I-5 all the way to Portland, West on I-84, North on I-82...now you're in Washington. I don't know how those roads are in Washington, but your complaint was with Oregon.

Taking the 97 is certainly more scenic, and probably quite a bit shorter, but I doubt it's quicker. So the choice was yours- save gas and savor the beauty, or drive faster. I would have taken 97 too, but I'm not going to bitch about the speed limit. Don't blame it on the state, it was your choice. :D

EDIT...According to MS Streets and Trips...

Interstates- 1256 miles...18 Hours and 28 minutes.
Hwy 97- 1146 miles...18 hours and 38 minutes.

However, I've found that those time estimates are always low on the back roads and high on the interstates. I'd bet the interstates would be an hour or three faster, unless you hit Portland at rush hour. But you're going to burn a lot more gas, and the drive up I-5 through Oregon is perhaps the only part of the state that isn't beautiful. (I-84 is awesome, though.)

That's right Sunday was the day. Day 2. I forgot it ran Saturday through Monday. I really had a lot of fun though. I love the camp ground we stayed at too. I had great companions which helped as well in Kings00fan and Chiapet. Also running into you and your lady, invisible robots and just staring at the landscape.

No no no no no no no no no no no, and no. "Um, I would prefer to have less fun please (raising hand)."

I agree that Sunday was the weakest lineup, which is why I spent most of the day hanging out at the campground, ie, the biggest party in the NW. You don't have to spend 100% of your time watching music to have a good time, like you might at other festivals. Advice number 1, avoid Wildhorse.

It made sense that Sunday was the weakest lineup. The Cure had been booked for basically ever, and that was the day most likely to sell out, and the first day that did sell out. I heard they had to honor tickets to the Seattle show the Cure canceled, so I'm guessing half the crowd was planning on skipping the earlier acts that day either way.

It also makes sense to front and backload a festival to convince people to buy tickets to all three days. Many people who were not interested in heavier music skipped the first day in 2006. The festival would have made more money had that been the second day.

The campground?
Fuck that, why avoid it? It was perfect. They sold food and beverage, it was a bit smaller but had showers and awesome people to hang out with. We drank beer and smoked pot openly and I saw people eating mushrooms as well. :) Waking up in the morning was awesome. I even kind of liked not seeing a sea of tents but seeing more farmland and the sunrise. It's sooo green and awesome up there.

My comment about avoiding Wild Horse was in regards to you saying the festival should be shortened because you were bored Sunday, and Rage agreeing.

I have no doubt camping at Wild Horse was fun. Everything at Wild Horse is also at the main campground, including lots of cool people to hang out and party with, and it is just as scenic, if not more (correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think one can see the venue or the River from Wild Horse like you can at the main campground?)

I always guessed Wild Horse is geared more toward people in their mid 30s and up. You would probably get a better nights sleep, and hang out with other (equally cool) mid 30s and up folk. I just think you are missing out on a lot of the excitement and fun of the weekend being so far away from the main campground and venue.

This is why I disagreed with you about thinking the festival should be shorter, and assumed no one staying at the regular campground would agree. I wish the festival was every other day, just to give me a full day in between to hang out at the campground.

Nice pictures by the way.

I'm 23 and generally prefer Wild Horse... But then again the type of partying I enjoy has never been a bunch of trashed 18 year olds doing conga lines...

I've done both, and depending on the show make my decision according to what the crowd is going to be like.

Count me as one to think learning something on a web board is about 1000 times better than reading through 300 pages of mindless "I like this band" BS to find out legitimate rumors. I think this discussion about camp sites might help lurkers and potential first timers, so....

This will be my fifth Sasquatch, and I cannot imagine camping at Wild Horse. The main campground is almost 50% of the draw for me. The lineup can be terrible, and I would still go.

The draw of Wild Horse is that it is cheaper, a lot cheaper from what I hear. It is over a mile away, so you have to take a shuttle between the campground and festival. I hear it runs every 30 minutes. It almost takes 30 minutes to walk from the main campground to the venue though, but at least you don't have to wait.

I hear the shower situation might be better. I would be interested to hear a comparison of those who have done both, like jax above.

My personal opinion is that if partying annoys you, and you are a bit older, and you are looking to save some money, Wild Horse might be right for you (although consider VIP camping at the main campground as well). But if you end up at Wild Horse, you'll end up missing the trashed 18 year old conga line.

faxman75
01-07-2009, 12:55 PM
Well at Wild Horse, they only had 2 showers and they were both outdoors with no roof so you showered under the sky which was nice. A bit chilly but not bad. The wait could be up to 45 minutes or so at times I think. The shuttle worked perfect and hassle free for me, however the very last day someone got left behind and walked back. They were exhausted when they arrived and the campground shuttle bus driver apologized but did so with a laugh which I found odd as the kid didn't look amused. I suited me just fine though and I liked that it was a little more low key. I'm not insane party guy, i like to party somewhat quietly with a small group of other partiers. Everyone is different I suppose.

All that said, I don't believe i'll be making a return this year. I liked it alot but i'm trading Sasquatch for Bonnaroo this year it looks like. I'm gonna see what he dirty hippy fest is all about and chalk it up as another experience. :D

wmgaretjax
01-07-2009, 01:01 PM
I've done Wild Horse twice for Sasquatch, and the main campground twice. The comparisons stated so far fit the bill pretty much. There is definitely partying to some extent at Wild Horse most years, but it is a little lower key (also people are more inclined to share substances there than the main camp). In the end, you'll have a blast either way. The people at Wild Horse also tend people that have gone multiple times before, there is a vet quality to the crowd there...

no i am male, i didnt really have driving issues, just issues with a state that doesnt allow you to pump gas, has cops that follow you for miles, and is filled with barns that children get molested from. also known as the state you are living in...

Speed Limit in Oregon on Interstates is 65. Assuming you were coming from SoCal...I-5 all the way to Portland, West on I-84, North on I-82...now you're in Washington. I don't know how those roads are in Washington, but your complaint was with Oregon.

i had just map quested the shortest route to get there. that 100 extra miles would have been like 4 extra gallons of gas, and at that time gas was like 4.50 so it was worth it saving the miles. also the route we were on wasnt an interstate hence the 55. next year ill try going farther up the 5 to check out some of oregon but more or less i just wanted to get out of that crap state.

eh oregon, not so great, portland also not so great. i travel to most of the "best cities" all the time for my job and am forced to meet most of the desolate people in said towns that want to be on tv. people in oregon tend to be convicted felons from other states that have moved out there, just based on what i see from contestant background checks. also lots of semi burned out hippies and people in outdated clothing, with bad teeth. very un tv friendly and unappealing to look at.

attitude has nothing to do with getting a ticket, i broke a law so therefor i deserved the ticket. its pretty simple. i did get out of it writing a letter saying i didnt know the laws there and was an out of stater. the fine was something like $500 though so glad i got out of it.

my job is to pass judgement on people, sterotype them, rate their looks and background stories, and whore them out on television. maybe thats why i am so judgemental but without people like me, there wouldnt be great people to love and hate on reality tv.

It's a great little venue they've got up in Washington. At the 2007 Squatch I was front and center for all the headliners, and they limit the amount of people that can enter the floor area so you don't have to worry about getting your ribs crushed.

software development is a career and congrats, i am sure as a kid you envisoned yourself wasting away in a cubicle as an adult. sounds like a huge blast! you have made me oh so envious....

you work in software development but doing what?

i could saw i work in television but be a security guard for the studio, or heck an audiance seat filler.

and what is up with the drone thing, i dont really get it. i see drones as someone going to work and doing the same thing every day, in the same little box, on the same commute, seeing the same people, sitting infront of the same computer.

my jobs a little different, i set my own hours, i get to travel, hell when i go to a concert if i find a person to interview for the show i get to write it off. not very drone-ish. plus i am the one pitching the people, just because i dont want to put ugly, uniteresting people on tv doesnt make me a drone, it makes me smart. you are NOT going to see ugly people on shows unless its a local tv broadcast or something like the biggest looser (but even they look for overweight people that can be attractive if slimmed down)

Ok, we get it, people on TV are better than the rest of us, and those who decide who are on TV are even better. Your job defines your existence as a human, good for you. Some of us would rather talk about music when we are not on the clock.

You should start your own thread about how great you are, it might help to add a fake lineup poster, or claim that you have insider knowledge on who the Coachella headliners will be. Just trying to help you out. No one needs a Jerry Springer or Price Is Right lecture.

Can we go back to talking about how great the Sasquatch festival is? Thank you.

Your attitude tells me you deserved the ticket. Oregon is a mostly great state, and Portland is one of the best cities in the US.

Seconded. How could anyone not love Portland? It's Seattle, minus all the things that annoy me about Seattle. Even the suburbs in Portland aren't that bad.

Bend I could do without...I think it reminds me too much of my current location, which I'm trying to leave to move to Portland. But even there you've got Deschuttes Brewery.

According to the Mercer Worldwide Quality Of Living Survey in 2006 (http://www.mercerhr.com/attachment.dyn?idContent=1216315&filePath=/attachments/English/QOL_Survey2006_table.pdf), there are only 5. I have not camped at the main campgrounds - I've only gone to sasquatch once (last year) and camped at Wild Horse. I really liked Wild Horse. It is small and yes it was fairly quiet. The "partying" that went on was more like people hanging out, drinking, smoking, etc, but doing so in a way that was respectful of others who weren't interested or were trying to sleep. The people that ran the place were so nice and IMO made the stay all that much better.

The shuttle is fine. It runs every 30 minutes very early in the day, but once the festival opened, they were pretty much running it back and forth constantly... so however long it takes to make it a mile down the road and back and reload. About 10-15 minutes I'd guess. The only slight wait was at the end of the might after the last set, you might be with 100+ other people who are waiting and have to wait your turn for a couple of bus loads. It probably still takes longer to walk back to the main campgrounds and find your tent if you aren't towards the front of the lot.

Oddly what really stands out in my mind about Wild Horse is the insanely plush soft grass, LOL. When I tell my friends about the campgrounds they look at me like I must have been completely fucked up when I go on about the grass. Keep in mind I normally "camp" in southern or central CA where it's more like camping on dirt and hay. :)

Agree here. I own my own business, and up until recently, my wife was a manager at the same company for 11 years. She got 7 weeks off a year, and I made my own schedule. Our only restraints on taking time off to go somewhere was money.

If my career ever became "my life", I'd be very sad. And if my career involved casting "reality shows", then I would know I took a wrong turn somewhere. Pocket deserves a kick in the cunt for helping to destroy television. (And this is from a guy who is working on editing an infomercial.)

Well my friend use to live in Hollywood and date a prominent actress, and he still works in the business, and he told me that television producers in general are a lower walk of life than car salesmen. I use to think he was just making an inaccurate generalizations.

He said petty criminals usually end up being security guards, because they were never good at being criminals, so they craved that authority in not allowing others to do things they couldn't. He said it is the same with TV producers, they were not interesting enough to be on TV, so they craved that same authority in deciding who can do what they couldn't.

I apologize for suggesting that you make your own thread about how great you are, because you have obviously hijacked this one. Most of us don't want to hear anything else about your job, if they do, they can PM you. Can we get back to talking about Sasquatch again? That would be rad.

I agree about the plushness of the grass, it is similar at the main campground, although I am going to estimate the last 15% of main campground entrees end up camping in the endless field that is "overflow." If you end up being very late, don't expect the plush greens we speak of.

The first couple times I attended the Gorge, I didn't bring a tent. A sleeping bag on the grass was just fine. Then again, you open yourself up to wanderers stepping on you, so a tent is better.

I read a cool article about this venue on Consequence of Sound earlier this week, saying it might be the best music venue in the world. Not that I have been to many great outdoor venues, but I would be interested to hear if anyone disagrees?

Funny, yeah, somewhere in the back of mind, I meant to mention the first couple times I went to the Gorge (without the tent) were in the middle of the summer, when it never rains. It is desert there, so Memorial day weekend is just the beginning of nice weather, and sometimes it is crap. Late June through August is very dry.

The Gorge use to have great shows every other weekend in the summer, like in the late 90s and early aughts. These days, it is Sasquatch, Warped, Dave Mathews Band, Ozzfest, some religious festival, and a couple random big acts (like Tool, Tom Petty, and Rush recently).

no offense, but this could not be further from the truth. Chicago is a much much better city for young people. the social scene (nightclubs, bars, restaurants, art, music venues) in chicago destroys LA. also, everything in LA closes at 1/2am, compared to 4/5am in Chicago, so i really don't know where you are getting your info from. maybe spend more than a week in a place before making such a comment.

That's what I've heard from all my friends who'd camped at main campgrounds (previous years), and also that with heavy rain, it was kind of muddy. Didn't sound like that much fun to me.

Rain is OK for camping as long as you're prepared. Fortunately I was warned. You definitely need ground cover for your tent. I prefer a footprint that matches the tent since tarps sometimes pool up water. Stake your rainfly down really well. Last year there were some pretty sharp gusts hitting my tent and making it wobble but otherwise it held up pretty well. Perfectly dry inside. It was actually pretty nice for sleeping.

I can highly recommend the VIP camping at Sasquatch. I stayed there last year for my 4th Sasquatch and I can definitely recommend the extra expense. The grounds were a nice balance of hedonism and respectful leave us the hell alone. We had a wide expanse of grass to set up on for our small group and we quickly made friends with our neighbors. The showers had minimal lines (15 minutes max at peak) and the shuttle system was a nice perk. It dropped you off at a separate entrance by the food court and there was no line to get in.

I'm curious to see the lineup this year, which will detemine my attendance. I've always had a great time at the Gorge, regardless of the fickle weather situations.

that was a good year. although a lot of the same bands played at Coachella.

Agreed, I have never had trouble finding a good spot to see a band at Sasquatch compared to other festivals. 20K people on an incline will do that, compared to the festivals that have 50K to 75K people on flatter grounds.

Sasquatch 07 was cool, but Sasquatch 06 was fantastic. The lineup was great, and you can't beat a hail storm of that magnitude.

Also glad I get to see Animal Collective at the Roseland instead of the Crystal Ballroom, I am disgusted with that venue lately. Although that is assuming Sasquatch doesn't have a third day on Monday like last year.

The Gorge is pretty far from Seattle. But Sasquatch is definitely worth it, regardless of Seattle.
We worked the show last year (my fiance and I are Stagehands), and set up for the Cure, the Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, and Death Cab For Cutie, among others.
In fact, evidently we were standing right next to "rage patton", but did not realize it until reading some of his past posts today.

Obviously I'm a huge Patton fan, but I gotta say that as awesome as Crudo was, it was the Flaming Lips show that truly blew me the fuck away!
(My fiance and I actually helped build the spaceship that Wayne Coyne came out of.)

Anyhow, I highly suggest being a stagehand to anyone that wants an awesome second job.
The pay isn't great, but the perks can be pretty amazing!
(Who can complain about free shows?)
Try Rhino Staging, which is who we work for. They are in a lot of different states, so there may be one near you. We worked for Rhino in Vegas, San Diego and right now in the Pacific Northwest.
Vegas definitely pays the most, but who the hell wants to live in Vegas?
Rhino Northwest is actively hiring right now, so if your in the Tacoma/Seattle/Portland/Yakima area, you should check it out.

man, sasquatch is my dream festival. i first saw the pictures on pitchfork 07 and i got chillbumps. i love a lot of the bands that play there, and from pictures, the venue is absolutely stunning.

coachella will be my first music fest, and the reason im going to that, probably has to do with sasquatch getting my attention focused on music fests. i really want to go this year, no matter who's playing, but my girlfriend will still be in school. im debating on whether or not to hold off til '10 or go alone if i can get days off.

The only thing bad about Sasquatch is the weather. Sasquatch happens in that weird time period between the rainy spring and the dry mid-Washington summer. It's totally unpredictable. One minute you're in scorching heat, the next you're freezing your ass off because of rain, wind, or freak hail.

Hmmm. Well comedy also suits me fine, so that serves as a nice consolation prize.

So far I am not all that impressed with the Confirmed and Rumored artists, though Sun Kil Moon would be cool and Passion Pit sounds alright.

Bonnaroo got a pretty damn good line-up...one can only hope that Sasquatch is able to come through again this year.

Yea, I am hoping to hear more confirmed groups for Sasquatch too... I'm pretty sure I'm going to suck it up and head to Bonnaroo this year. Could still make it to Sasquatch (the holiday helps, I'd really only have to take a 1/2 day off work) but that's an awful lot of money on festivals...

negatory on the DJ tent. theres the yeti stage (a small stage that was mainly NW bands), the wookie stage (which is the side stage) and the sasquatch stage (which is the main one). there was also a comedy tent that was fenced off as well.

seriously just drive from SF, its not that bad, and with gas prices what they are now it wont be that bad especially if you go up with a friend. plus the tickets are really cheap (compared to other festivals). i think last year i spent around 300 for the entire trip with tickets and gas.

I'm going to Sasquatch 2009 no matter what!!! A large group of friends already planning to go isn't hurting either. The rumored lineup is looking pretty good thus far too--KOL aside.

Any word on headliner rumors? I'm thinking TVOR, YYYs and Franz are really strong possibilities to subhead. And is KOL a Sasquatch headliner?

magmazing
02-04-2009, 12:58 AM
Other than Kings of Leon and Peter Bjorn & John, I haven't heard any of the other bands' music so far out of the confirmed/highly likely list. I also see KOL as more of a solid sub-headliner

Hopefully some more high profile acts start popping up soon for Sasquatch.

boarderwoozel3
02-04-2009, 01:19 AM
Some friends and I are trying to figure out the strongest headliner possibilities. Considering other festival headliners and bands that have or are going to play Seattle recently, I can see:

Coldplay
Pearl Jam
Radiohead
Daft Punk
Muse ???
Oaisis
Blur

But doesn't Sasquatch not trip too much on sharing headliners? Knowing Coachella and Bonnaroo don't like sharing we can eliminate: Macca, The Killers, The Cure, NIN, Beastie Boys, The Boss & Phish. But most of those were already obvious anyway.

wmgaretjax

Travis Hay, a blogger for the PI reports that it will be three days. I have found him to be a pretty trusting source. However, someone has started a rumor on the Sasquatch! message board that it will be four, but I would not consider them a reliable source at this point. I think it will be three based on some touring schedules of confirmed/solidly rumored bands on three separate days May 23rd (Sun Kil Moon), 24th (Avett Brothers) and 25th (Tobacco from Black Moth Super Rainbow).

The weekend before Sasquatch 08 was blistering hot as well, low to mid 90s, but it dropped 10-20 degrees for the festival. It was not as hot as Sasquatch 05, which was upper 90s.

The hail storm of 06, as fun as it was, isn't the norm. I'm not sure a hail storm of that magnitude happens anywhere on the planet in late May.

The wind storm of 07 is more likely. The wind does blow there. Although, I have spent most of the last four festivals in shorts and a tee shirt during the day, and warmer clothes at night. It is a safe bet it will be 38-48 degrees in the middle of the night, but 71 to 83 during the day. Rain is not extremely common that time of year, but it does happen.

The Friday camping is not sold online like the other days, nor is it discounted. You pay $40 per car at the gate when you get there.

I would highly recommend getting there Friday night. First off, you will get a better camping spot closer to the venue, which makes it easier to find your way back in the dark after the show. Second, you will have better access to multiple honey buckets. Third, Friday night is a bigger party since it starts late afternoon and ends early morning. Each other night, the parties don't really get going until after the headliners are finished around midnight. Plus the energy at the "anticipation" party is unreal. Each other night, there are people worn out from spending all day in the sun, or drinking too much.

I paid $442.90 last year for two three day passes, and one three day discounted camp pass. I recall the camp rape charge being at only $3.50 or so, so the tickets were about $169.70 per three day pass. They had three price ranges though, I paid this much the weekend they went on sale. They went up $10 per three day pass after the opening weekend of sales. They went up another $10 approximately two weeks before the festival.

I had friends who bought tickets a month after they went on sale, and they had to pay for each night individually, which added an extra rape charge to each ticket. They ended up paying more than $442.90 for the two three day passes alone, so I basically got the camping pass for free by purchasing the first weekend.

i sorta hope its a good lineup, even though I probably cant go... but it already has Kings of Leon, so how great can it be?

Come on now, we all know that one band can't wreck a festival, especially considering that they're going to have a dance tent at night. I say bring on Kings Of Leon, it means one less conflict I have to deal with.

Wait a second, Casey is a chick? Somehow I found this more fathomable when it was a dude trying to pick up a dude's dude. This is all weird now. Can we go back to talking about the festival?

Hell yeah, If they're going to have a dance tent and bill it as such it can't be too bad. Sounds like they'll get some DJs and dancy bands. I'm game.

I have never been to Sasquatch, but ive been asking the same questions too. Ive ltried ooked into it all, so ill see what i can do. Please someone correct me if im wrong.

There is some campsite called White Horse that people like. I don't know much about that.

yes, your car is right with your tent.

Apparently the campground is really great and everyone is nice and fun. The party is crazy on friday night but slowly winds down as the weekends moves on and people get more tired.

I believe the shows end at 11:30-12 ish

Thought I'd weigh in on this for those that have never been. I can't imagine why anyone would want to camp off site. The campground is fantastic. I went in 2006 and had a nice view of the venue in the distance. The scenery is AMAZING. You can bring beer into the campground and whatever else you want. In fact, security was so lax, my buddy and I ended up bringing about 8 beers through the gates every day. You park your car wherever you want and just set up your tent. Shows typically end around 11:30-midnight, although the weather delay in '06 caused the show to go until almost 2am one night.

I am very fond of Coachella and this will be my fourth year in a row attending. But Sasquatch is a much different festival. At Coachella, I go with a large group and rent a huge house. It's pretty much a week long party and the lineup is always amazing. But if you are into camping (as I am as well), there is no better place than Sasquatch for a music festival, and I think it is an experience that all music fans should have at least once. I'd love to go again this year, but it's always tough to do Sasquatch and Coachella since they are so close together and VERY far from my home (NYC).

If you are up in the air about going to Sasquatch, just say fuck it and go. You will not be disappointed.

There was a discussion about Whitehorse camp ground v. the main campground earlier in this thread with a couple testimonies you might want to check out. Not to continue my never ending quest of "why stay at Whitehorse," but this is how I look at it.

Most of you have been to Coachella, and probably a lot of you have camped there. What if you had two options for camping. Option #1, you camp at the main campground next to the venue, walk to and from the festival, and experience a gigantic party. Option #2, you stay at a similar campground 1/5th of the size a couple miles away in which you need to ride a shuttle bus to and from the venue, and enjoy a much smaller, but possibly equally cool party (depending on your tastes).

To be fair, Wildhorse campground at Sasquatch is cheaper, and the walk from the main campground to the festival is 20 minutes, but to each their own.

As for sneaking beer into the festival, I have read several posts on various boards talking about how easy it is to do this. I know they basically don't search you from the VIP entrance, but the main entrance, they do. I have been to the last four Sasquatch festivals, and I can only recall one entrance in which a pocket full of beers would have gone un-noticed. Sneaking beer in the main entrance is not as easy as people make it out to be. Then again, maybe security is more lax early in the morning. I usually do not enter the venue until 2-4.
