PaulB must be happy about this one. And yes, i read Pitchfork and posted a story. Bite me in advance

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/148294-pauls-boutique-to-get-20th-anniversary-reissue

The Beastie Boys' classic second LP Paul's Boutique is set to get the 20th Anniversary treatment, although details about what exactly that entails are still largely unavailable. A new Paul's set had been rumored for months, and the trio have now confirmed the news on their website, announcing a forthcoming remastered version. Amazon.com has had the album listed as a Janaury 27 release for some time now, promising that it will feature "EXTRA TRACKS"-- and you know they mean it, since it's in all-caps. Alas, our repeated attempts to get information from the Beasties' publicists have come up dry.

That makes sense now, since the group is collecting email addresses and looks set to first announce details to its fans. They're also cleverly drawing people in with a loop of Paul's highlights that frankly makes me a bit depressed about having to listen to a bunch of promos today that will inevitably not be as good as a few chopped-up minutes of decades-old music.

Expect more of these sorts of things-- deluxe anniversary editions, bonus track-loaded reissues like the past, present, or future catalog releases from the Cure, Pavement, Saint Etienne, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, New Order, and many more-- in the next year or so: A lot of artists are wisely realizing they're staring down their last chance to release their catalogs on CD, and so they're going all out to create definitive versions of their work, and get fans to buy their products one last time. (NB: In the cases of the Cure, Pavement, Saint Etienne, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, New Order, and Beastie Boys, we'll happily play/pay along.)

***and now actually reading the story for the first time I pretty much realize that this is probably old news.

Well, for Paulb's sake... lets hope they do they tour in support of this reissue. They never did an actual tour in support of Paul's Boutique.

The album was not a huge success at launch. It took a while for it to build up it's rep.

production on this album is so nuts

paulb

Ya, Capitol Records said Bboys couldnt tour the album until it went platnium..... and the cd didnt go platnium till 1998.... 9 years after it came out. So, PB material is rarely played live, and really deserves to be played in its entirely....preferably in a club, where they would have played back in 89.

ya, and with Obama in Office, they have nothing to bitch about this time.

sbessiso

And they need to keep "The Mix Up" material to a bare minimum if any at all

summerkid
01-07-2009, 05:13 PM
seriously, epic sing a longs that would rival kraftwerk last year (at least for me and my friend).

ya, maybe save those for more Gala shows...or just play Off The Grid.

seriously, epic sing a longs that would rival kraftwerk last year (at least for me and my friend).

if they played more Licensed to Ill/Pauls Boutique they easily could have a compairable set....but if they play too much TT5B/Hello Nasty it wont be as hot.

one of their greatest songs...if only they performed the last verse live...

Bud Luster
01-07-2009, 07:44 PM
hmmm... wonder if they ever cleared the samples and disbursed the royalties???

paulb
01-07-2009, 07:50 PM
of course they didnt....they dont have to.

Trick Loves The Kids

I donno, I think they might feel kind of weird touring an album that's two decades old. A lot of those lyrics are pretty much in direct opposition to a lot of the stuff they stand for now.

That said I'd kill to see them do the whole album live.

And they never cleared the samples because it was before that one court case that made sampling illegal or whatever. Which rules, because there's no way Paul's Boutique could've sounded anywhere near what it sounds like if they had to pay for samples.

So how does that work now as far as the legality of re-releasing something with new songs or whatnot with tons of samples in it. Do they need to get any new clearances?

Bud Luster
01-08-2009, 10:25 AM
of course they didnt....they dont have to.

then perhaps they shouldnt be such cunts about letting people sample them.

shotglass75
01-08-2009, 10:29 AM
where do you get your information?

paulb
01-08-2009, 05:51 PM
then perhaps they shouldnt be such cunts about letting people sample them.

who have bboys been cunts to about sampling? Beck? no. Prodigy? no. Ice Cube? no..... give me names please.

I know the Beasties said no to Burt Reynolds wanting to use 5 Piece Chicken Dinner in his movie....but thats all thats coming to my mind.

A lot of those lyrics are pretty much in direct opposition to a lot of the stuff they stand for now.

For a while the Boys were changing certain lyrics when they performed songs live (stuff about girlies in Lincolns, etc.) but the last couple times I saw them they'd gone back to the original words.

I think they've come to terms with who they were and just want to put on a good show. Their new songs certainly won't include whores, dust and 22's... but the old ones have 'em and shouldn't lose 'em.

I want that 8 foot poster of the cover so bad!

While visiting NYC in 2002 I actually went to the corner, stood in the middle of the street and took a panoramic group of photos. Unfortunately much had changed in the 13 years between the album and my photos so they didn't look the same.
